THE CAUSE OF DEATH FOR TWO MEN WHOSE BODIES WERE FOUND BADLY DECOMPOSED IN A LAYTONVILLE MARIJUANA GREEN HOUSE MONDAY, HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED EVEN THOUGH THE INITIAL AUTOPSY IS COMPLETE.

ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFF/CORONERS OFFICE, THE BODIES ARE SO BADLY DECOMPOSED THAT THEIR IDENTITIES REMAIN UNKNOWN AND THE CAUSE OF DEATH CANT BE DETERMINED WITHOUT THE RESULTS OF TOXICOLOGY TESTS. THOSE TEST RESULTS ARE NOT EXPECTED FOR SEVERAL WEEKS.

WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND IN SONOMA COUNTY (PI) JH 05/16/14

SONOMA COUNTY HAS FOUND ITS FIRST WEST NILE VIRUS INFECTED MOSQUITO THIS YEAR.

ACCORDING TO THE MARIN/SONOMA MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT, THIS IS THE EARLIEST IN THE YEAR THE DISEASE HAS BEEN DETECTED IN SONOMA COUNTY SINCE 2008, AND MAY BE AN INDICATOR OF WHAT IS TO COME THIS YEAR. THE INFECTED MOSQUITO WAS FOUND IN A RURAL AREA OF THE COUNTY, BETWEEN THE CITIES OF SONOMA AND NAPA. SONOMA COUNTY IS THE EIGHTH CALIFORNIA COUNTY, INCLUDING LAKE, THAT HAS DETECTED WEST NILE VIRUS THIS YEAR. THREE DEAD BIRDS TESTED POSITIVE IN LAKE COUNTY LAST MONTH.

A LAYTONVILLE MAN SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AFTER FLIPPING HIS ATV WHILE NOT WEARING A HELMET.

THE TIMES-STANDARD REPORTS, 54-YEAR-OLD GUY MITCHELL WAS RIDING THE ATV ON PRIVATE PROPERTY SOUTH OF STEELE LANE WEDNESDAY, WHEN HE LOST CONTROL AND THE ATV OVERTURNED. MITCHELL WAS FLOWN TO MERCY HOSPITAL IN REDDING. THE ACCIDENT IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION.

WOMAN UNHAPPY WITH KFC ORDER, ARRESTED AFTER BLOCKING DRIVEWAY (LAW) JH 05/16/14

A WILLITS WOMAN WHO WAS UNHAPPY WITH THE FOOD SHE RECEIVED AT KFC, PROTESTED BY BLOCKING THE DRIVEWAY BEFORE BEING ARRESTED FOR DUI.

62-YEAR-OLD WINIFRED WINONA EDMONDS CALLED THE RESTAURANT TO COMPLAIN TO THE OWNER. WHEN TOLD HE WAS NOT AVAILABLE, SHE SAID SHE WOULD BE GOING TO THE LOCATION TO BLOCK THE DRIVEWAY. WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, EDMONDS WAS FOUND TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL FOR DUI.

VERIZON WILL BE PERFORMING UTILITY REPAIRS ON HIGHWAY 271 FROM JUST SOUTH OF THE HUMBOLDT/MENDOCINO COUNTY LINE BEGINNING TODAY. THE WORK WILL BE ONGOING FROM 7 AM TO 4 PM WEEKDAYS.

AND CAL TRANS WILL BE PERFORMING RESTRIPING ON HIGHWAY 1 AT SIMPSON LANE BEGINNING SUNDAY. WORK WILL BE DONE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING FROM 7 PM TO 5 AM DAILY.

STABBING SUSPECT IN CUSTODY (LAW) JH 05/15/14

A UKIAH MAN SUSPECTED OF A STABBING INCIDENT NEAR BIG LOTS ON MONDAY HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

AN UNIDENTIFIED 24-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS WALKING DOWN ORCHARD AVENUE WITH HIS FIANCÉE AND DAUGHTER WHEN HE WAS APPROACHED BY ANOTHER MAN. THE TWO BEGAN ARGUING BEFORE THE SUSPECT PULLED A KNIFE AND CUT THE VICTIM TWICE, NEAR THE RIGHT EYE AND ON THE FOREARM. THE SUSPECT FLED AND THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER. AN INVESTIGATION LED POLICE TO ARREST 24-YEAR-OLD GABRIEL MANUEL HERNANDEZ OF UKIAH ON WEDNESDAY. THE INCIDENT IS BELIEVED TO BE GANG RELATED AND HERNANDEZ WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

SHERIFFS OFFICE IDENTIFIES DEAD INMATE (LAW) JH 05/15/14

AN INMATE WHO DIED IN CUSTODY AT LAKE COUNTYS HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

37-YEAR-OLD JAMES ELLIS SMITH, WHO WAS FACING MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES, WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE IN HIS CELL LAST SATURDAY. SMITH WAS IN CUSTODY ON BURGLARY AND FELONY EVASION CHARGES AFTER RAMMING A SHERIFFS VEHICLE DURING PURSUIT. AUTHORITIES ATTEMPTED CPR ON SMITH BUT WERE UNABLE TO REVIVE HIM. AN AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF DEATH IS STILL PENDING.

WILLITS CITY COUNCIL GETS UPDATE ON EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLY (GOV/EVR) JH 05/15/14

THE WILLITS CITY COUNCIL RECEIVED AN UPDATE ON THE CITYS EMERGENCY WATER PROJECT AT LAST NIGHTS MEETING.

THE NECESSARY $2.2 MILLION NEEDED FOR THE WATER PROJECT IS COMING TOGETHER, AS A $500,000 GRANT IS IN THE WORKS AS WELL AS THE DOUBLING OF THE ORIGINAL $250,000 IN PROP 84 FUNDS THAT THE CITY WAS AWARDED. THE CITY HAS ALSO RECEIVED A FAVORABLE REVIEW FOR ANOTHER GRANT THAT WOULD LIKELY MAKE UP THE REMAINDER OF THE NEEDED FUNDING. A MORE DETAILED UPDATE ON THE CONSTRUCTION PORTION OF THE PROJECT WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE NEXT CITY COUNCIL MEETING.

BURL POACHING SUSPECT ARRESTED (LAW/EVR) JH 05/15/14

A MULTIPLE AGENCY INVESTIGATION INTO THE POACHING OF REDWOOD BURLS FROM NORTH COAST TREES HAS YIELDED ONE ARREST.

THE YEAR LONG INVESTIGATION BY FEDERAL AUTHORITIES CONCLUDED WITH AN ANONYMOUS TIP THAT LED THEM TO A BURL SHOP IN DEL NORTE COUNTY. THE BURLS WERE MATCHED TO CUTS FOUND IN THE REDWOOD CREEK DRAINAGE. DANNY E GARCIA OF ORICK WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE CHARGES. A LAKEPORT MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ROBBING A PHARMACY TO SUPPORT HIS ADDICTION TO PAIN KILLERS.

AUTHORITIES WERE NOTIFIED WEDNESDAY MORNING THAT A MAN WITH A LARGE KNIFE ENTERED THE NORTH LAKE MEDICAL PHARMACY AND HELD THE KNIFE TO THE PHARMACISTS THROAT BEFORE FEEING WITH MULTIPLE BOTTLES OF A PRESCRIPTION PAIN KILLER. 25 YEAR OLD CRAIG ANTHONY LENT WAS LOCATED A SHORT TIME LATER ON TERRACE AVENUE WITH THE PILL BOTTLES IN HIS POSSESSION. LENT WAS BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

SOME PHYSICIANS IN MENDO COUNTY NOT ACCEPTING ACA PATIENTS (PI)

SOME MENDOCINO COUNTY PHYSICIANS ARE NOT ACCEPTING AFFORDABLE CARE ACT INSURANCE COVERAGE.

DUE TO MISCOMMUNICATION BETWEEN ADVENTIST HEALTH AND SEVERAL LOCAL MEDICAL GROUPS, NUMEROUS CLINICS IN THE AREA THAT WERE BELIEVED TO ACCEPT THE SO CALLED OBAMACARE COVERAGE DO NOT HAVE A CONTRACT WITH BLUE CROSS FOR THE COVERED CALIFORNIA PPO PLANS ASSOCIATED WITH THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. HOWEVER, A REPRESENTATIVE FOR ADVENTIST HEALTH HAS SAID THAT THEY ARE STILL SEEING CURRENT PATIENTS AND ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS WHO SIGNED UP FOR THE GOVERNMENT MANDATED COVERAGE. UKIAH TEACHERS REQUEST 10 PERCENT RAISE (ED) JH 05/15/14

UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHERS AND THEIR UNION ARE REQUESTING A TEN PERCENT RAISE IN PAY FOR THE COMING YEAR.

AT THIS WEEKS SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING,

NUMEROUS TEACHERS ATTENDED TO URGE THE DISTRICT TO APPROVE ANOTHER PAY INCREASE, AS THE DISTRICT AND THE TEACHERS UNION ARE CURRENTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF NEGOTIATING A NEW CONTRACT. LAST YEARS NEGOTIATIONS ENDED WITH THE TEACHERS RECEIVING A 5.72 PERCENT INCREASE RETROACTIVE TO 2012. THE DISTRICT HAS OFFERED A 3.25 PERCENT INCREASE FOR THIS YEAR AGAINST THE TEACHERS 10 PERCENT REQUEST, AND AN AGREEMENT HAS YET TO BE REACHED.

WINERIES AND GROWERS ACROSS THE NORTH COAST ARE OPTIMISTIC THANKS TO A SECOND YEAR OF RECORD SETTING HARVESTS AND STRONG CONSUMER DEMAND. A UKIAH MAN WALKING WITH FAMILY WAS STABBED MONDAY AFTERNOON NEAR BIG LOTS.

THE DAILY JOURNAL REPORTS, AN UNIDENTIFIED 24-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS WALKING DOWN ORCHARD AVENUE WITH HIS FIANCÉE AND DAUGHTER WHEN HE WAS APPROACHED BY ANOTHER MAN. TWO BODIES FOUND IN LAYTONVILLE MONDAY, WERE BADLY DECOMPOSED AND IN A GREENHOUSE FILLED WITH MARIJUANA.

DEPUTIES WERE TAKEN TO THE WOODMAN CREEK ROAD HOME BY A PERSON WHO FOUND THE BODIES. TWO DECEASED MALE BODIES WERE LOCATED IN A GREENHOUSE WITH APPROXIMATELY 180 SMALL MARIJUANA PLANTS. THE BODIES WERE IN ADVANCED STAGES OF DECOMPOSITION, AND DETECTIVES WERE UNABLE TO NOTE ANY OBVIOUS SIGNS AS TO THE CAUSE OF DEATH. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION THAT COULD AID DETECTIVES IN THIS INVESTIGATION IS URGED TO CONTACT THE SHERIFFS OFFICE TIP LINE AT 234-2100.

A RECENT SPIKE IN REDWOOD BURL POACHING PROMPTED THREE AGENCIES TO COME TOGETHER TO DEVELOP A REWARD FUND FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AN ARREST.

THE TIMES-STANDARD REPORTS, WHEN A TREES BURL IS CUT OFF, EXPOSURE TO INSECTS OR DISEASE WEAKENS THE TREE, WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO TOPPLE. THE THREE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS ARE OFFERING A $5000 REWARD TO PROTECT THE BURL. 32 YEAR OLD LAWRENCE HIRSCHELL MURRAY OF MIRANDA WAS OBSERVED BY DEPUTIES TUESDAY AT ROBINSON RANCHERIA BINGO AND CASINO, AND DURING A CONVERSATION, ADMITTED TO BEING ON PROBATION WITH A SEARCH CLAUSE. WHEN ASKED TO BE SEARCHED, MURRAY ATTEMPTED TO FLEE, BUT WAS QUICKLY APPREHENDED. MURRAY WAS FOUND TO HAVE 3.8 GRAMS OF COCAINE IN HIS POSSESSION, AND HE WAS BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

BLOWN TIRE ON GREYHOUND BUS SPARKS SEVERAL FIRES (LAW)

A GREYHOUND BUS THAT HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT SPARKED SEVERAL ROADSIDE FIRES ALONG HIGHWAY 101 TUESDAY.

THE NORTHBOUND BUS WAS EMPTY WHEN A DRIVERS SIDE TIRE CAUGHT FIRE. BURNING DEBRIS FROM THE TIRE IGNITED ROADSIDE BRUSH IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS OVER A TWO-MILE STRETCH OF ROAD. THE FIRES WERE SMALL AND EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY WITH MINIMAL DAMAGE. CHP REPORTED NO INJURIES FROM THE INCIDENT.

29-YEAR-OLD DOUGLAS LEE MAGRUDER WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND IN THE LOCH LOMOND AREA WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASON HE WAS UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE IN THE ROAD AND HIT A PINE TREE. MAGRUDER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES, AND HIS PASSENGER, 29 YEAR OLD AMBER NICOLE STOGNER SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES. TWO CATS THAT APPEARED TO BE ABANDONED IN A MOTEL ROOM, LED AUTHORITIES TO FIND A MARIJUANA PACKAGING AND SHIPPING OPERATION.

THE MOTEL MANAGER NOTICED THE CATS IN A WINDOW SEAL THAT APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN ABANDONED, AND CONTACTED ANIMAL CONTROL. WHEN THEY ENTERED THE ROOM, A LARGE AMOUNT OF MARIJUANA WAS OBSERVED AND POLICE WERE SUMMONED. A TOTAL OF 14 POUND OF POT WAS LOCATED PACKAGED AND READY TO SHIP, APPROXIMATELY 646 GRAMS ON CONCENTRATED POT, OVER 32 GRAMS OF COCAINE, A NUMEROUS PACKAGING AND SHIPPING SUPPLIES. THERE WAS ALSO EVIDENCE THAT CHILDREN WERE STAYING IN THE ROOM WHILE THE DRUG PROCESSING WAS TAKING PLACE. AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE IDENTITY OF THE PERSONS BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE IS ONGOING, AND THE CASE IS BEING FORWARDED TO THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE.

THE SERVICE OF TWO SEARCH WARRANTS IN LAKE COUNTY RESULTED IN THE SEIZURE OF SEVERAL THOUSAND MARIJUANA PLANTS AND TWO ARRESTS.

AUTHORITIES SERVED THE WARRANTS AT TWO PROPERTIES ON RIATA ROAD IN LOWER LAKE FRIDAY MORNING. DETECTIVES WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE ANYBODY, BUT DID FIND AND SEIZE A TOTAL OF 3,277 MARIJUANA PLANTS, 2 POUNDS OF PROCESSED POT, TWO FIREARMS AND PROCESSING MATERIALS. JUST PRIOR TO DEPARTING THE LOCATION, DETECTIVES NOTICED A VEHICLE APPROACHING THE PROPERTY, AND A BEER WAS NOTICED BETWEEN THE DRIVERS LEGS. THE TWO OCCUPANTS, 30-YEAR-OLD NESTOR RODRIGUEZ-GONZALEZ AND 25 YEAR OLD MIGUEL ANGEL VARGAS, BOTH OF LOWER LAKE WERE DETAINED. DURING A ROUTINE CELL CHECK SATURDAY MORNING AT THE LAKE COUNTY HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND INMATE WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS CELL.

THE CORRECTIONS OFFICER NOTIFIED MEDICAL STAFF AROUND 9:05 AM, WHO RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY AND BEGAN CPR ON THE INMATE. AFTER ABOUT 25 MINUTES OF CPR, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF LIFE AND CPR WAS DISCONTINUED. THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE ARE CONDUCTING PARALLEL INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE CAUSE OF THE INMATES DEATH. SWAT WAS CALLED AFTER A LAKEPORT MAN BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE A COVELO HOME FOLLOWING HIS ASSAULT OF HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND.

20-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM REEVES WAS AT HIS EX-GIRLFRIENDS RESIDENCE ON BARNES LANE IN COVELO WHEN HE ACCUSED HER OF STEALING HIS DIGITAL MUSIC. DURING THE INCIDENT, REEVES THREW THE VICTIM TO THE GROUND, AND PUNCHED HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AS SHE WAS SPEAKING TO A 911 OPERATOR. WHEN AUTHORITIES ARRIVED AND WERE SPEAKING TO THE VICTIM OUTSIDE, REEVES CAME OUT, THEN FLED BACK INTO THE HOME AND BARRICADED HIMSELF INTO A BEDROOM, TELLING AUTHORITIES HE HAD A GUN. REEVES STARTED A SMALL FIRE IN THE HOME AND TOLD AUTHORITIES THEY WOULD HAVE TO SHOOT HIM. AFTER A 6 HOUR STANDOFF WITH SWAT, REEVES GAVE UP PEACEFULLY AND WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

24-YEAR-OLD KENNETH LEE WILKINSON WITHDREW THE GUILTY PLEA AT FRIDAY MORNINGS SENTENCING HEARING, JUST BEFORE HE WAS TO BE SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON. THE MALE TOLD DEPUTIES THAT NUNEZ BECAME AGITATED, GRABBED A KITCHEN KNIFE AND TRIED TO ASSAULT HIM WITH IT. AFTER AVOIDING ATTACK, NUNEZ PUT THE KNIFE DOWN AND PICKED UP A BBQ FORK AND AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO ASSAULT HER BOYFRIEND. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE REDWOOD COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A DRAFT MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH MENDOCINO COLLEGE TO HAVE THE SCHOOL OFFER CLASSES, PROGRAMS AND SERVICES IN FORT BRAGG.

THE ADVOCATE-NEWS REPORTS, THIS COMES AFTER THE COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS ANNOUNCED IN FEBRUARY THAT OPERATIONS AT THE FORT BRAGG CAMPUS WOULD BE SUSPENDED BEGINNING THIS FALL. MANY COASTAL RESIDENTS HAVE SHOWN SUPPORT FOR TRANSFERRING OPERATIONS TO MENDOCINO COLLEGE.

REDWOOD TREE POACHING IS A RAPID GROWING PROBLEM ON THE NORTH COAST.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THIEVES ARE CUTTING THE BURL FROM THE BASE OF OLD GROWTH REDWOOD TREES IN REDWOOD NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS ALONG THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST. THE BURLS FROM THESE REDWOODS, WHICH ARE NOT ONLY THE TALLEST ON EARTH, BUT MANY ARE ESTIMATED TO BE MORE THAN 2000 YEARS OLD, CAN BE SOLD FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. THEY ARE PRIMARILY TURNED INTO FURNITURE, DECORATIVE BOXES, BOWLS AND VARIOUS OTHER SOUVENIRS. THE THEFT HAS INCREASED DRAMATICALLY OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. ACCORDING TO PARK OFFICIALS, WHEN BURLS ARE CUT, IT DAMAGES SOME OF THE BARK WHICH OPENS THE TREE UP TO EVEN MORE RISK, AS THE BARK IS CRITICAL TO PROTECTING THE REDWOODS FROM INSECT INFESTATION AND FIRE, AS THE BARK IS FLAME-RESISTANT.

THERE ARE SEVERAL ROAD WORK PROJECTS CAUSING TRAFFIC DELAYS AROUND LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES CURRENTLY.

CONSTRUCTION WILL CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY 101 FROM .8 TO 1.5 MILES SOUTH OF THE NORTH WILLITS RAILROAD CROSSING. NIGHTTIME WORK HOURS ARE 5 PM TO 7 AM WEEKDAYS. INTERMITTENT FULL ROAD CLOSURES WILL BE IN EFFECT TO ALLOW TRUCKS TO ENTER AND EXIT THE HIGHWAY. MOTORISTS SHOULD ANTICIPATE 5-MINUTE DELAYS.

SUSPECT IN HUMBOLDT DEPUTY SHOOTING ARRESTED (LAW) JH 05/08/14

A SUSPECT WHO SHOT A HUMBOLDT COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY TUESDAY AFTERNOON WAS ARRESTED OUTSIDE HIS SHELTER COVE HOME.

DEPUTIES ARRIVED AT THE KELLY LANE RESIDENCE OF 55 YEAR OLD WILLIAM LLOYD NELSON AT APPROXIMATELY 2:45 TUESDAY TO SERVE A COURT ORDERED EVICTION, WHEN NELSON SHOT AT THE OFFICERS STRIKING ONE IN THE CHEST. DEPUTIES RETURNED FIRE WHILE FLEEING THE SCENE. THE DEPUTY WAS AIRLIFTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL AND THANKS TO HIS BALLISTIC VEST IS DOING OK. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT DISPATCHED MEMBERS OF THEIR SWAT TEAM AND ARMORED VEHICLE TO ASSIST THE HUMBOLDT SWAT TEAM IN SECURING NELSONS RESIDENCE. NELSON WAS EVENTUALLY LOCATED AT 3:30 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING OUTSIDE OF HIS HOME AND WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

EARLY MORNING FIRE DESTROYS HOME (LAW) JH 05/08/14

AN EARLY MORNING FIRE WEDNESDAY DESTROYED A HOME AND OUTBUILDING AND DAMAGE A THIRD STRUCTURE BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL.

THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED WHEN FIRE FIGHTERS ARRIVED AT THE WEST HIGHWAY 20 HOME SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT YESTERDAY MORNING. THE HOME, WHICH HAD BEEN VACANT FOR SOME TIME, WAS A TOTAL LOSS, AND AN OUTBUILDING WAS ALSO LOST. A GARAGE SUSTAINED ONLY MODERATE DAMAGE, AS THE BLAZE ALSO CONSUMED ABOUT A HALF ACRE OF VEGETATION. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNKNOWN AND UNDER INVESTIGATION.

SEARCH WARRANT LEADS TO POT, METH, MUSHROOMS AND LSD (LAW)

THE SERVICE OF A SEARCH WARRANT LAST WEEK RESULTED IN ONE ARREST AND SEIZURE OF MARIJUANA, METHAMPHETAMINE, PSILOCYBIN MUSHROOMS, AND LSD.

AUTHORITIES SERVED THE WARRANT ON MAY 1ST AT LOWER LAKE HOME ON SPRUCE GROVE ROAD. THE RESIDENT, 43 YEAR OLD PHILIP DONALD MERCELINO, WAS FOUND IN THE BATHROOM SMOKING METH WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED. A SEARCH OF THE RESIDENCE REVEALED OVER 14 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, OVER 46 GRAMS OF POT, 4.5 GRAMS OF PSILOCYBIN MUSHROOMS, 93 DOSES OF LSD, A SCALE, PARAPHERNALIA AND A STUN GUN. MERCELINO WAS BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

A UKIAH MAN WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AFTER BEING STABBED SEVERAL TIMES TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTS, THE UNIDENTIFIED 41-YEAR-OLD VICTIM WAS FOUND AFTER HIS OBSERVATORY NEIGHBORS HEARD HIM YELLING FOR HELP. THE VICTIM HAD MULTIPLE WOUNDS TO HIS CHEST, ARMS AND HANDS, BUT NONE WERE LIFE THREATENING. THE VICTIM WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE AUTHORITIES WITH MUCH INFORMATION REGARDING WHO STABBED HIM AND WHY. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS THIS WEEK DISCUSSED A DRAFT ORDER FROM THE STATE WATER RESOURCE CONTROL BOARD THAT REVOKES A LICENSE THAT ALLOWS THE DIVERSION OF WATER FROM THE RUSSIAN RIVER.

ACCORDING TO THE STATE, THE LICENSE. WHICH OFFICIALLY BELONGS TO MASONITE, HAS NOT BEEN PUT TO USE FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS, AND THEREFORE WILL BE REVOKED. AN OFFICIAL FROM THE MILLVIEW COUNTY WATER DISTRICT ASKED THE BOARD FOR SUPPORT IN TRYING TO KEEP THE LICENSE, WHICH COULD PROVIDE UP TO 200 GALLONS OF WATER A DAY FOR ABOUT 5,800 RESIDENTS. THE WILLITS NEWS REPORTS, THE CONTRACTOR IS CURRENTLY POURING CONCRETE INTO SPECIALIZED STEEL FORMS TO CREATE THE VIADUCT SUPPORT COLUMNS, AS TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT CRIBBING IS GOING UP ALONG THE NEW HIGHWAY ROUTE BETWEEN CENTER VALLEY AND HEARST-WILLITS ROADS. ACCORDING TO CAL TRANS, THIS SEASONS MAIN GOAL IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES, SUPPORTS AND BRIDGES FROM THE SOUTHERN END OF THE BYPASS TO THE MIDDLE OF THE VIADUCT. FORD STARTED OUT AS AN ACCOUNT CLERK I IN THE TREASURER-TAX COLLECTOR OFFICE IN 1976. IN TAKING ACTION TO APPOINT A SUCCESSOR FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE UNEXPIRED TERM, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS COMMENDED FORD FOR HER DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE COUNTY WHILE ALSO RECOGNIZING THE LONGEVITY AND EXPERIENCE OF HER STAFF. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERVISORS VOTED UNANIMOUSLY AT WEDNESDAYS MEETING TO SEND A LETTER TO REQUEST AN EXPLANATION OF WHY THE DIVERSION OF 800 ACRE FEET OF WATER THROUGH THE POTTER VALLEY PROJECT FOR REDWOOD VALLEY WAS DENIED.

A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION DENIED THE REQUEST TO DIVERT THE WATER BECAUSE HE DID NOT BELIEVE THE CURRENT SITUATION QUALIFIES AS AN EMERGENCY. REDWOOD VALLEY RESIDENTS ARE CURRENTLY LIMITED TO 50 GALLONS OF WATER PER DAY WITH WATER FOR ALL AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES CUT OFF. THE LETTER FROM THE BOARD EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT IN THE DECISION TO DENY THE TEMPORARY WATER DIVERSION THAT COULD POTENTIALLY SAVE NUMEROUS CROPS, AND THE LIVELIHOOD OF THE FARMERS AND RANCHERS IN THE VALLEY. THE LETTER ALSO REQUESTS A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF HOW THE FINAL DECISION WAS MADE.

A MODERATE SIZED EARTHQUAKE SHOOK THE GEYSERS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 2:39 PM JUST 3 MILES NORTH WEST OF THE GEYSERS AT A DEPTH OF 1.6 MILES. THE TEMBLOR REGISTERED A 3.3 MAGNITUDE. SHAKE REPORTS CAME IN FROM AROUND THE REGION, BUT NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED.
