A 15 YEAR OLD UKIAH GIRL HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE LAST FRIDAY NIGHT

ALEXIS ANN TORRES WAS LAST SEEN FRIDAY NIGHT SOME TIME AROUND 7:30PM ON MARLENE STREET WITH ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED GIRL. SHE IS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES, 160 POUNDS WITH BLACK CURLY SHOULDER LENGTH HAIR. ALEXIS TAKES MEDICATION FOR DEPRESSION BUT SHE HASNT HAD ANY IN SEVERAL DAYS. ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION ON HER WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT OR THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE.

WINDOW SMASHED AT DIG MUSIC (LAW) JB 6/30/14

THE FRONT WINDOW OF DIG MUSIC IN UKIAH WAS SMASHED WITH A ROCK OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE OWNERS OF THE MUSIC STORE LOCATED ON NORTH STATE STREET RECEIVED A CALL FROM THEIR SECURITY COMPANY SUNDAY MORNING. THEY RUSHED TO THE STORE TO FIND THAT SOMEONE HAD THROWN A ROCK THROUGH THE FRONT WINDOW, POSSIBLY TRYING TO BREAK IN AND STEAL MERCHANDISE. NO ONE WAS HURT AND NO MERCHANDISE HAS BEEN REPORTED MISSING. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS INCIDENT IS ASKED TO CALL THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT.

LAKE COUNTY DEPUTIES SEIZE NEARLY 40,000 PLANTS (LAW) JB 6/30/14

MULTIPLE RAIDS IN LAKE COUNTY LAST WEEK RESULT IN THE ERADICATION OF NEARLY 40,000 MARIJUANA PLANTS.

THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS NARCOTICS TASK FORCE CONDUCTED SEVERAL RAIDS IN LOWER LAKE LAST WEEK IN THE AREAS OF JERUSALEM VALLEY, ROCKY CREEK, MORGAN VALLEY, AND ON SPRUCE GROVE ROAD AND SKY HIGH RIDGE. NEARLY 40,000 MARIJUANA PLANTS, A HONEY OIL LAB, AND MULTIPLE FIREARMS WERE SEIZED DURING THE RAIDS. A MAN WAS QUESTIONED AT ONE OF THE SITES HOWEVER NO ARRESTS WERE MADE AT THE TIME.

RECALL PETITION GIVEN TO HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE PRES (PI) JB 6/3014

THE PRESIDENT OF THE HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS BEEN ISSUED A RECALL PETITION CALLING FOR HIS REMOVAL.

THE PETITION WAS GIVEN TO BOARD PRESIDENT BILL WAITE LAST THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE ASSOCIATIONS MONTHLY BOARD MEETING AND WAS SIGNED BY 225 HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE MEMBER-RESIDENTS. WILL TUTTLE, THE SPOKESPERSON FOR THE PROPERTY OWNERS LISTED THE REASONS FOR WAITES RECALL AS ABUSE OF POWER, FAILURE TO PERFORM FIDUCIARY DUTIES, AND FAILURE TO ACT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE ASSOCIATION. STATE LAW GIVES TUTTLE 20 DAYS TO SET A DATE FOR A GENERAL MEETING WHERE THE COMMUNITY WILL VOTE WHETHER TO PROCEED WITH THE RECALL.

VEHICLE FIRE ON RIDGEWOOD GRADE (LAW) JB 6/30/14

A FAMILY HEADED FOR A CAMPING TRIP TO THE LOST COAST WAS SPARED INJURY WHEN THEIR CAMPER VAN BURNED TO THE GROUND LAST WEEK.

MATT BERARDO OF CAMPBELL AND HIS FAMILY WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE THE VAN AS IT QUICKLY BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES ON THE RIDGEWOOD GRADE ABOUT 10 MILES SOUTH OF WILLITS. THE FIRE COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE VEHICLE AND JUMPED TO THE NEARBY VEGETATION BEFORE IT WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL BY RESPONDING CREWS FROM CAL FIRE, LITTLE LAKE FIRE, AND THE REDWOOD VALLEY FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE FIRE WAS FULLY CONTROLLED IN ABOUT 3 HOURS AND BURNED APPROXIMATELY ONE ACRE.

BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPARTMENT GETS NEW ENGINE (LAW) JB 6/30/14

THE BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS A NEW FIRE ENGINE AT THE STATION AND IT DIDNT COST THEM A DIME.

THE TYPE 3 FIRE ENGINE WAS ACQUIRED BY CAL FIRE THROUGH THE FEDERAL EXCESS PROGRAM AND IT WAS BASED IN REDWOOD VALLEY FOR SOME TIME BEFORE FINDING ITS NEW HOME IN BROOKTRAILS. THE ENGINE IS A MUCH NEEDED ASSET FOR THE BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPARTMENT AS THE SUMMER FIRE SEASON STARTS TO HEAT UP. THE PURCHASE OF SUCH A FIRE ENGINE WOULD HAVE COST THE DEPARTMENT APPROXIMATELY $350,000

CLEARLAKE MAN INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH (LAW) JB 6/30/14

A CLEARLAKE MAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT SATURDAY EVENING.

55 YEAR OLD DAVID PRATT WAS RIDING SOUTHBOUND ON OLD HIGHWAY 53 NORTH OF ALPINE ROAD JUST AFTER 6:00PM SATURDAY WHEN HIS MOTORCYCLE WENT OFF THE WEST EDGE OF THE ROAD AND STRUCK A TREE. CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS AND LAKE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AND TRANSPORTED PRATT TO A LANDING ZONE AT RAYS FOOD PLACE WHERE A CAL STAR HELICOPTER FLEW HIM TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. ANYONE WHO WITNESSED THE CRASH IS ASKED TO CALL OFFICER JOSEPH MYERS AT 994-8251 EXTENSION 501

THE SAFETY OF COYOTE VALLEY RESERVATION POLICE OFFICERS HAS GREATLY IMPROVED THANKS TO A NEW AGREEMENT WITH THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE.

24/7 DISPATCH SERVICES WILL NOW BE PROVIDED TO THE COYOTE VALLEY RESERVATION POLICE DEPARTMENT BY THE SHERIFFS OFFICE, GREATLY INCREASING COMMUNICATION AND OFFICER SAFETY. DISPATCHERS WILL NOW BE ABLE TO PROVIDE OFFICERS WITH INSTANT INFORMATION DURING TRAFFIC STOPS AND OFFICER LOCATIONS WILL BE KNOWN BY DISPATCH AT ALL TIMES. THE CVRPD QUALIFIED FOR A $30,000 FEDERAL GRANT THAT WILL BE USED TO PAY FOR THE DISPATCH SERVICES FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

67 YEAR OLD STEPHEN GRAMMER WAS DRIVING ON LAKESHORE BOULEVARD NORTH OF HILL ROAD AROUND 7:45AM WEDNESDAY MORNING WHEN HIS 1996 CHEVROLET PICKUP DRIFTED OFF THE ROAD, HITTING A SIGN AND KNOCKING DOWN A POWER POLE. COUNTY CREWS FROM THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT PROVIDED TRAFFIC CONTROL FOR MOST OF THE DAY AS AND PG&E ESTIMATED RESTORATION OF POWER TO ALL CUSTOMERS BY 3AM THURSDAY, GRAMMER WAS ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DUI FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT.

UKIAH CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NEW BUDGET (GOV) JB 6/27/14

THE FIRST CITY BUDGET PREPARED BY NEW FINANCE DIRECTOR KAREN SCALABRINI HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL

THE $15.3 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON WITH DIRECTION BEING FOCUSED ON MORE CLARITY AND TRANSPARENCY IN DOCUMENTATION. DEPARTMENTAL SPENDING WILL BE TRACKED BY THE USE OF A COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT, TRACKING THE INCOME AND EXPENSES OF ALL FUNDS AS WELL AS PROVIDING A TEN-YEAR HISTORY OF THEIR PERFORMANCE.

SUPERVISORS DISCUSS MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY POOL (GOV) JB 6/27/14

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MET TUESDAY TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF THE SWIMMING POOL AT MARYMOUNT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY.

THE OPTIONS DISCUSSED FOR THE CURRENTLY UNUSED POOL, LOCATED IN LUCERNE, INCLUDED REOPENING IT FOR PUBLIC USE, TURNING IT INTO A PLANTER BY FILLING IT WITH DIRT, AND COVERING IT WITH A DECK FOR POTENTIAL USE IN THE FUTURE. THE LAKE COUNTY DEPUTY ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER STATED THAT THE COSTS FOR REOPENING THE POOL ARE IN EXCESS OF $250,000 WITH AN ANNUAL MAINTENANCE COST OF AN ADDITIONAL $25,000. THE FATE OF THE POOL WILL BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE BOARD FOR FINAL APPROVAL AFTER FURTHER AESTHETIC OPTIONS ARE RESEARCHED.

UKIAH POLICE ARREST MAN FOR HUFFING SPRAY CAN (LAW) JB 6/27/14

UKIAH POLICE ARREST A MAN OUTSIDE OF RITE AID FOR INHALING FUMES FROM A SPRAY CAN.

36 YEAR OLD JAI CHANDLER KAMKE OF LOS ANGELES WAS FOUND BY UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS BEHIND RITE AID ON SOUTH STATE STREET HOLDING THE SPRAY CAN AND YELLING AT ANOTHER SUBJECT. WHEN INSTRUCTED BY POLICE TO DROP THE CAN, KAMKE REFUSED THEN PLACED THE CAN IN HIS MOUTH AND INHALED. OFFICERS ARRESTED KAMKE, WHO REMAINED AGITATED AND BELLIGERENT, ON MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING VIOLATION OF PROBATION STEMMING FROM A PREVIOUS ARREST FOR USE OF AN INHALANT.

FIREFIGHTERS RAISE $11,000 AT ANNUAL BENEFIT (PI/LAW) JB 6/27/14

A VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT IN LAKE COUNTY IS IN THE RED AFTER A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING EVENT LAST WEEK.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT THE THIRD ANNUAL DINNER AND AUCTION BENEFITING THE SOUTH LAKE COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER ASSOCIATION RAISED APPROXIMATELY $11,000. THE FUNDS RAISED AT THE EVENT WILL GO TOWARDS SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS OFFERED BY THE SOUTH LAKE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT AT BOTH SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE AND MENDOCINO COLLEGE. THE PURCHASE OF MUCH NEEDED EQUIPMENT USED BY THE VOLUNTEER FIRE ASSOCIATION IS ALSO FUNDED BY THE EVENT.

FT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL APPROVES BUDGET (GOV) JB 6/27/14

THE FT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED THE CITYS BUDGET FOR 2014/15 FISCAL YEAR.

THE NEWLY APPROVED BUDGET TOTALS $37.2 MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE YEAR AND IS $12.5 MILLION DOLLARS HIGHER THAN THE BUDGET FOR LAST YEAR. SPENDING ON NEW GRANT-FUNDED CAPITAL PROJECTS, INCLUDING THE NEW COASTAL TRAIL PROJECT, IS THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THE MASSIVE JUMP IN EXPENSES BY THE CITY. THE NEW BUDGET AMOUNT FOR THE CITYS GENERAL FUND, WHICH COVERS POLICE, STREET MAINTENANCE, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, HAS A PROJECTED AMOUNT OF OVER $8.8 MILLION DOLLARS IN EXPENDITURES IN THE COMING YEAR.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER CLAIMING TO SEE A GORILLA (LAW) JB 6/27/14

A UKIAH MAN WHO CLAIMED THERE WERE MONKEYS IN HIS DRIVEWAY WAS ARRESTED BY UKIAH POLICE ON NARCOTICS CHARGES.

OFFICERS FROM THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON THOMAS STREET TO INVESTIGATE THE REPORT OF A MAN CAUSING A DISTURBANCE AND SWINGING A BAR. 64 YEAR OLD JACK CARDIN TOLD POLICE THAT A GORILLA AND SOME MONKEYS HAD JUST BEEN IN HIS DRIVEWAY. CARDIN DISPLAYED SYMPTOMS OF DRUG USE AND WAS FOUND TO HAVE A HYDROCODONE TABLET IN HIS POCKET. OFFICERS ARRESTED CARDIN AND HE IS BEING HELD AT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON $35,000 BAIL.

COMMERCIAL SALMON SEASON OPENS (PI) JB 6/27/14

THE FIRST PORTION OF THE 2014 COMMERCIAL SALMON SEASON OPENED LAST THURSDAY AND FISHING VESSELS FROM AROUND THE REGION HAVE DESCENDED ON THE MENDOCINO COAST.

COMMERCIAL SALMON FISHERMEN HAVE SEEN PROMISING CATCHES DURING THE FIRST SEGMENT OF THE SEASON, WHICH LASTS ONLY 11 DAYS. THE NOYO FISH COMPANY REPORTED THAT THEY BOUGHT ABOUT 5000 POUNDS OF SALMON FROM COMMERCIAL BOATS ALREADY THIS SEASON, WITH INDIVIDUAL FISH WEIGHING UP TO 30 POUNDS. THE FIRST PORTION OF THE SALMON SEASON WILL END ON JUNE 30, REOPENING AGAIN JULY 15. THE SEGMENTED FISHING SEASON WAS PUT IN PLACE BY FISHING REGULATORS AS A WAY TO LIMIT OVERALL CATCH.

REDWOOD VALLEY WOMAN HURT IN HWY 20 CRASH (LAW) JB 6/26/14

AN ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY TUESDAY MORNING SENT A REDWOOD VALLEY WOMAN TO THE HOSPITAL.

63 YEAR OLD KRISTIN JAHN WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20 WEST OF BRUNER DRIVE JUST AFTER 10:00AM WHEN HER 2005 HONDA PILOT DRIFTED OFF THE ROAD AND ONTO THE SHOULDER. THE CAR HIT A POSTED SPEED SIGN BEFORE COLLIDING WITH A DIRT EMBANKMENT AND ROLLED OVER. JAHN SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES IN THE CRASH AND WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. ACCORDING TO CHP REPORTS, ALCOHOL WAS NOT A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN THE CRASH.

POTTER VALLEY MAN ARRESTED ON POT, GUN CHARGES (LAW) JB 6/26/14

THE DISCOVERY OF OVER 4600 MARIJUANA PLANTS AND A STOLEN ASSAULT RIFLE LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A POTTER VALLEY MAN.

THE SERVICE OF A SEARCH WARRANT BY MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AND STATE FISH AND GAME OFFICERS ON A 160 ACRE PARCEL OFF OF OAT GAP ROAD IN POTTER VALLEY LED TO THE ARREST OF 43 YEAR OLD SAUL HERNANDEZ. THE OFFICERS DISCOVERED 4692 MARIJUANA PLANTS AND THAT HERNANDEZ WAS ILLEGALLY DIVERTING WATER TO GROW THEM. AN ASSAULT RIFLE RECOVERED FROM THE GROW SITE WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM A PETALUMA POLICE OFFICER IN 2008. HERNANDEZ IS SCHEDULED FOR A COURT APPEARANCE TODAY.

UKIAH COUNCIL VOTES TO PUT MEASURE S ON BALLOT (GOV) JB 6/26/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY THAT THE RENEWAL OF HALF CENT SALES TAX BENEFITING PUBLIC SAFETY WILL BE ON THE BALLOT THIS NOVEMBER.

ORIGINALLY PASSED NINE YEARS AGO, THE MEASURE S TAX IS DUE TO EXPIRE NEXT YEAR. TO DATE, THE TAX HAS GENERATED APPROXIMATELY $19 MILLION DOLLARS FOR PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES AND IF IT IS NOT RENEWED IT COULD LEAVE POLICE AND FIRE BUDGETS WITH A $2 MILLION DOLLAR ANNUAL CUT. BEFORE APPROVING TO PLACE THE RENEWAL MEASURE ON THE BALLOT, THE COUNCIL ADDED THAT A CITIZENS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE EVALUATE EXPENDITURES OF THE TAX MONEY EVERY TWO YEARS.

FIRE ON TALMAGE ROAD DESTROYS ONE HOME (LAW) JB 6/26/14

AN EARLY MORNING FIRE YESTERDAY ON TALMAGE ROAD LEFT ONE HOME DESTROYED AND ANOTHER SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.

THE UKIAH VALLEY FIRE AUTHORITY REPORTED THAT WHEN THEY ARRIVED THE BLAZE HAD COMPLETELY ENGULFED ONE HOUSE AND WAS THREATENING A SECOND. WITH THE LIMITED RESOURCES ON HAND, FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO SAVE ABOUT ONE THIRD TO ONE HALF OF THE SECOND HOME. AS THE FIRST HOME COLLAPSED, FIREFIGHTERS TORE APART THE ROOF TO FULLY EXTINGUISH ANY SMOLDERING MATERIAL. NEITHER HOME HAD ANY PEOPLE OR ANIMALS INSIDE AT THE TIME AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

FT BRAGG TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO NARCOTICS ARREST (LAW) JB 6/26/14

A TRAFFIC STOP BY FORT BRAGG POLICE LEADS TO MULTIPLE ARRESTS ON NARCOTICS AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

A FORT BRAGG POLICE OFFICER CONDUCTED A TRAFFIC STOP ON HARRISON STREET OF A WHITE PICKUP WITH NO FRONT LICENSE PLATE. THE DRIVER, 51 YEAR OLD JULIA ANN HEWITT, ATTEMPTED TO CONCEAL A GLASS METH PIPE AS THE OFFICER CONTACTED HER. A SEARCH OF HER VEHICLE FOUND 20 GRAMS OF METH PACKAGED FOR SALE, AS WELL AS HEROIN AND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. A SUBSEQUENT SEARCH OF HER RESIDENCE LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF ADDITIONAL DRUGS AND A FIREARM IN POSSESSION OF 59 YEAR OLD RICK WILLIAM HEWITT. BOTH JULIA AND RICK HEWITT WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

COUNTY ANNOUNCES INCREASE IN LANDFILL RATES (GOV) JB 6/26/14

THE COST OF TAKING GARBAGE TO THE DUMP IN LAKE COUNTY IS ABOUT TO RISE.

LAKE COUNTY PUBLIC SERVICES ANNOUNCED THAT LANDFILL FEES AT THE EASTLAKE LANDFILL WILL BE GOING UP STARTING ON JULY 1. THE INCREASE IN TONNAGE AND VOLUME RATES IS TO OFFSET THE COSTS OF LANDFILL OPERATIONS AND COMPLIANCE REGULATIONS. THE MINIMUM GATE FEE WILL STAY AT $5 AND LANDFILL USERS WILL NOT SEE AN INCREASE FOR INDIVIDUAL MATERIALS SUCH AS MATTRESSES AND COUCHES.

COLORADO MAN ARRESTED IN KELSEYVILLE (LAW) JB 6/26/14

A WANTED COLORADO MAN WAS APPREHENDED BY LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES IN KELSEYVILLE.

20 YEAR OLD JOHN DAVID HESTON OF LONGMONT COLORADO WAS DETAINED BY LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES AFTER THEY HAD RECEIVED INFORMATION THAT WAS LIVING IN KELSEYVILLE. HESTON, WHO FALSELY IDENTIFIED HIMSELF TO DEPUTIES, WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF A STOLEN VEHICLE AND WAS BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL. HE IS CURRENTLY AWAITING EXTRADITION BACK TO COLORADO WHERE HE HAS FOUR OUTSTANDING ARREST WARRANTS AND IS FACING 15 TO 25 YEARS OF PRISON TIME.

THE THEFT OF COPPER FITTINGS ASSOCIATED WITH FIRE HYDRANTS WAS REPORTED BY NOR CAL WOOD PRODUCTS OF UKIAH AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE SUSPECT AND HIS VEHICLE WAS PROVIDED BY WITNESSES. A PERSON MATCHING THE DESCRIPTION TURNED IN HYDRANT FITTINGS AT A RECYCLING CENTER IN UKIAH AND DEPUTIES WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE THE IDENTITY OF THE SUSPECT FROM PAPERWORK HE FILLED OUT AT THE CENTER. 39 YEAR OLD RYAN CAMPBELL WAS LOCATED ON TALMAGE ROAD AND ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES AND A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE TURNED UP ADDITIONAL HYDRANT PARTS BELONGING TO THE CITY OF UKIAH AND THE HOPLAND UTILITY DISTRICT.

BUOYS PLACED ON CLEAR LAKE TO MARK SHALLOW WATER (PI) JB 6/25/14

IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP BOATERS SAFE ON CLEAR LAKE, MARKER BUOYS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON THE LAKE MARKING SHALLOW WATER AREAS.

THE LOW WATER LEVEL IN CLEAR LAKE PROMPTED THE PLACEMENT OF THE BUOYS IN ORDER FOR BOATERS TO AVOID PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN HAZARDS. THE BUOYS ARE LOCATED NEAR THE SHORE OF RODMAN SLOUGH BUT ALL BOATERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF TREES, SNAGS, SANDBARS, AND OTHER HAZARDS IN ALL PARTS OF THE LAKE. AREAS OF THE LAKE THAT HAVE BEEN EASILY NAVIGATED IN YEARS PAST COULD BE DANGEROUS THIS YEAR DUE TO LOWER WATER LEVELS.

MARYLAND WOMAN HIT HOPLAND (LAW) JB 6/25/14

AN ELDERLY WOMAN IN HOPLAND WAS STRUCK BY A VEHICLE OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE 83 YEAR OLD MARYLAND RESIDENT WAS ATTEMPTING TO CROSS TO THE EAST SIDE OF HIGHWAY 101 AT CENTER STREET. SHE SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY A 2003 OLDSMOBILE DRIVEN BY A 56 YEAR OLD CLEARLAKE WOMAN. THE VICTIM WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND, ALTHOUGH THE DRIVER WAS NOT ARRESTED, THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

UKIAH MAN ARRESTED ON SEX ABUSE CHARGES (LAW) JB 6/25/14

A UKIAH TRANSIENT WAS ARRAIGNED TUESDAY ON MULTIPLE SEX ABUSE CHARGES.

41 YEAR OLD TIMOTHY SCOTT BUCKWAY WAS ORIGINALLY ARRESTED ON MAY 23 ON SUSPICION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FOR REPORTEDLY STRIKING HIS WIFE IN THE PARKING LOT OF WALMART IN UKIAH. THE FIGHT ALLEGEDLY STARTED WHEN THREE OF BUCKWAYS FOUR DAUGHTERS TOLD THERE MOTHER HE HAD STRUCK THEM WITH A METAL POLE EARLIER. AN EXTENSIVE POLICE INVESTIGATION OF MORE THAN 100 HOURS CULMINATED IN BUCKWAY BEING CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE FELONIES INCLUDING SEXUAL ACTS WITH A MINOR HE IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD IN THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON $1.7 MILLION DOLLARS BAIL.

A GRASS FIRE THAT BROKE OUT SOUTH OF HOPLAND OVER THE WEEKEND WAS LIKELY THE RESULT OF CARELESS CAMPERS.

CAL FIRE, AS WELL AS BOTH THE HOPLAND AND CLOVERDALE FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE ON SUNDAY MORNING NEAR COMMINSKY STATION ROAD ALONG THE RUSSIAN RIVER. ACCORDING TO EVIDENCE FOUND AT THE SCENE, IT WAS LIKELY THE RESULT OF A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT WERE CAMPING NEAR THE RIVER. FT BRAGG POLICE RESPOND TO THE REPORT OF A POSSIBLE ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

OFFICERS RESPONDING TO AN ADDRESS ON MCPHERSON STREET IN FT BRAGG WITNESSED A MALE SUBJECT RUNNING FROM THE SCENE, LATER IDENTIFIED AS 56 YEAR OLD KELLY KIMBER. THE VICTIM, STEVEN REYNOLDS, TOLD POLICE THAT KIMBER AND ANOTHER MALE SUBJECT ENTERED HIS RESIDENCE AND ASSAULTED HIM, TRYING TO GET HIM TO GO TO A BANK AND WITHDRAW MONEY FOR THEM AT GUNPOINT. A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 101 LAST FRIDAY SENT THREE PEOPLE TO AREA HOSPITALS WITH MODERATE INJURIES.

THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL REPORTED THAT THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 9:30AM LAST FRIDAY WHEN A DODGE CARAVAN ATTEMPTED TO ENTER HIGHWAY 101 AT THE PERKINS STREET ON-RAMP. A PICKUP IN THE RIGHT LANE ATTEMPTED TO MOVE OVER TO LEFT BUT A 1998 4RUNNER WAS ALREADY IN THE LEFT LANE. THE DRIVER OF THE 4RUNNER SWERVED, HITTING THE CENTER DIVIDE AND THEN CAREENED TO THE RIGHT AND HIT THE CARAVAN, CAUSING IT TO ROLL. THREE OCCUPANTS OF THE CARAVAN WERE TRANSPORTED TO AREA HOSPITALS WITH MODERATE INJURIES AND THE CAUSE OF THE COLLISION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

SEVERAL SIMULTANEOUS WILDFIRES IN THE CLEARLAKE OAKS AREA WERE CONTAINED QUICKLY BY MULTIPLE RESPONDING AGENCIES.

THREE SEPARATE FIRES WERE REPORTED SATURDAY AFTERNOON NEAR THE AREA OF HIGHWAYS 20 AND 53. AN ELDERLY MAN DROWNED ON CLEAR LAKE OVER THE WEEKEND.

WITNESSES REPORTED SEEING THE 87 YEAR OLD SAN LORENZO MAN LAUNCHING HIS BOAT FROM THE FIFTH STREET BOAT RAMP ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THEN, FOR SOME REASON, THE MAN DOVE INTO THE WATER AND FAILED TO RESURFACE. THE NORTHSHORE FIRE DIVE TEAM, LAKEPORT FIRE, AND POLICE RESPONDED TO THE INCIDENT AND THE MANS BODY WAS DISCOVERED APPROXIMATELY 45 FEET FROM SHORE. THE CAUSE OF THE MANS DEATH IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE CORONERS OFFICE.

THE LAKE HAS DROPPED ALMOST 13,000 ACRE FEET IN THE PAST 3 WEEKS SO PLEASE USE CAUTION ON THE LAKE, AS DROPPING WATER LEVELS WILL EXPOSE SUBMERGED HAZARDS.

A WILLITS MAN INVOLVED IN A CAR CRASH LAST DECEMBER THAT KILLED A KELSEYVILLE RESIDENT HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER.

WAYNE LEROY CALDWELL WAS OFFICIALLY CHARGED BY THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE WITH BOTH VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER AND DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE, BOTH MISDEMEANORS. ON DECEMBER 7, 2013, CALDWELLS PICKUP TRUCK CROSSED THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE ON HIGHWAY 29 AND STRUCK AN ACURA INTEGRA HEAD ON, KILLING 26 YEAR OLD BRANDON HELMER OF KELSEYVILLE. BLOOD TESTS SHOWED THAT CALDWELL WAS NOT IMPAIRED BY ALCOHOL OR ANY SUBSTANCE AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

A MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEO UP A WOMANS SKIRT IN WAL-MART IS BEING SOUGHT BY THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

THE MAN REPORTEDLY CROUCHED DOWN BEHIND THE WOMAN AS SHE REACHED FOR MERCHANDISE ON AN UPPER SHELF AND HE USED STORE MERCHANDISE TO CONCEAL A SMALL CAMERA AIMED UP AT THE WOMAN. A FRIEND OF THE WOMAN NOTICED WHAT THE MAN WAS DOING AND CONFRONTED HIM, PROMPTING THE MAN TO LEAVE WITHOUT BEING IDENTIFIED. THE UKIAH TEACHERS ASSOCIATION VOTED IN FAVOR OF A NEW CONTRACT REACHED WITH UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THE UTAS RESOUNDING ACCEPTANCE OF THE NEW CONTRACT GETS THE TEACHERS ONE STEP CLOSER TO MOVING ON WITH PLANNING FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. MAN REPORTEDLY SHOOTS HIMSELF AT TOWERMART (LAW) JB 6/20/14

A LAKE COUNTY MAN REPORTEDLY SHOT HIMSELF OUTSIDE THE TOWER MART IN LAKEPORT ON WEDNESDAY.

LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO ALTERRA DRIVE IN LAKEPORT WEDNESDAY EVENING AND DISCOVERED THE BODY OF 61 YEAR OLD MICHAEL THEODORE GOSSETT. IT WAS CONFIRMED THURSDAY THAT GOSSETT HAD DIED FROM A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE HEAD, BELIEVED TO BE SELF-INFLICTED. GOSSETT HAD RECENTLY BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND HE HAD JUST BEEN RELEASED FROM JAIL ON MONDAY.

MUSSELS FOUND ON BOAT HEADED TOWARD NAPA (EVR) JB 6/20/14

A BORDER CHECK OF A BOAT BEING TRANSPORTED TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF OVER 1000 QUAGGA MUSSELS.

THE LAKE COUNTY WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT REPORTED THAT BOAT, WHICH HAD BEEN STOPPED FOR INSPECTION AT A BORDER CHECK STATION IN TRUCKEE, WAS PLACED IN QUARANTINE AFTER FOR THAN 1000 OF THE INVASIVE AND HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE MUSSELS WERE DISCOVERED ATTACHED TO THE HULL. THE OWNER OF THE BOAT LIVES ON KNOXVILLE ROAD IN NAPA COUNTY NEAR THE LAKE COUNTY BORDER AND THE WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BELIEVES THE INSPECTION PREVENTED POSSIBLE CONTAMINATION OF BOTH CLEAR LAKE AND LAKE BERRYESSA.

KELSEYVILLE JUVENILE DUI HIT AND RUN (LAW) JB 6/20/14

A REPORT OF A HIT AND RUN DRIVER LED TO THE PURSUIT AND ARREST OF A KELSEYVILLE TEENAGER.

UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD TO INVESTIGATE THE REPORT OF A WHITE IMPALA THAT STRUCK TWO PARKED CARS THEN FLED NORTH. POLICE SPOTTED THE VEHICLE TRAVELING ON TALMAGE ROAD AND ATTEMPTED TO PULL THE DRIVER OVER. THE PURSUIT MOVED TO WAUGH LANE WHEN THE IMPALA STRUCK A SIGN AND WENT THROUGH A FENCE, FINALLY STOPPING. THE DRIVER, A 17 YEAR OLD FEMALE FROM KELSEYVILLE, RAN FROM THE VEHICLE BUT WAS QUICKLY APPREHENDED. SHE WAS BELLIGERENT AND RESISTIVE AND SPIT ON ONE OF THE OFFICERS. THE JUVENILE WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING BATTERY ON A POLICE OFFICER.

FT BRAGG POLICE JOHN NAULTY WINS HEROES CONTEST (LAW) JB 6/20/14

A STATEWIDE HOMETOWN HEROES COMPETITION HOSTED BY TOYOTA/SAVEMART HAS BEEN WON BY FT BRAGG POLICE LIUTENANT JOHN NAULTY.

POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS, MILITARY PERSONNEL, FIRST RESPONDERS, AND TEACHERS FROM AROUND THE STATE WERE NOMINATED FOR THEIR ACTS OF BRAVERY AND SERVICE. LIEUTENANT NAULTY HAD CONFRONTED THE OREGON FUGITIVE WHO SHOT AND KILLED MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTY RICKY DEL FIORENTINO ON MARCH 19 AND NAULTYS DAUGHTER, KAYLYNN, HAD NOMINATED HER DAD FOR HIS BRAVERY IN THAT TRAGIC EVENT. FOR WINNING THE CONTEST, NAULTY WILL WAVE THE STARTING FLAG AT THE TOYOTA/SAVEMART 350 THIS SUNDAY AND HE WILL ENJOY A FULL NASCAR WEEKEND.

DRUNKEN DEATH THREATS IN WILLITS (LAW) JB 6/19/14

A VERBAL ARGUMENT BY TWO PEOPLE IN WILLITS LED TO A MAN MAKING DEATH THREATS.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE DISPATCHED TO AN ADDRESS ON ORIOLE LANE IN WILLITS ON TUESDAY EVENING TO RESPOND TO THE REPORT OF A LOUD VERBAL ARGUMENT. THEY FOUND A WOMAN ON THE GROUND NEXT TO HER WHEELCHAIR CALLING FOR HELP FROM THE BACK PORCH OF THE HOUSE. THE 74 YEAR OLD VICTIM TOLD THE DEPUTIES THAT 71 YEAR OLD JOEL BERKOWITZ HIT HER IN THE FACE AND KICKED HER OUT HER WHEELCHAIR, THEN THREATENED TO KILL HER. BERKOWITZ WAS FOUND LAYING ON THE FLOOR INSIDE THE RESIDENCE HEAVILY INTOXICATED AND HE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

CITY PREPARES WORK LIST FOR PALACE HOTEL (GOV) JB 6/19/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL SETS TWO NEW PROJECT DEADLINES FOR THE PALACE HOTEL.

DURING A RECENT MEETING, THE COUNCIL DISCUSSED TWO IMMEDIATE PROJECTS INVOLVING THE REMODELING PROJECT OF THE PALACE HOTEL IN UKIAH. THE FIRST WAS TO HAVE THE BUILDING SECURE FROM UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY BY JULY 10, DUE TO A NUMBER OF BREAK-INS AND THE RELATED FIRE RISKS WITH POTENTIAL VANDALISM. THE SECOND DEADLINE , SET FOR JULY 25, IS THE SUBMISSION OF A WORK PLAN BY THE HOTELS OWNER TO BOTH CAL/OSHA AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT WITH REGARDS TO THE REMOVAL OF ASBESTOS IN THE BUILDING.

PROBLEMS WITH ANIMAL SHELTER IN UKIAH (GOV/PI) JB 6/19/14

A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS, INCLUDING SEVERE OVERCROWDING AND A RAT INFESTATION, PLAGUE THE MENDOCINO COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER IN UKIAH.

IN A RECENT REPORT BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY GRAND JURY, THE ANIMAL SHELTER WAS TO SHOWN TO SUFFER FROM UNDERFUNDING AND MISMANAGEMENT. THE FACILITY ATTEMPTS TO HOUSE UP TO 150 DOGS AND UP TO 80 CATS PER DAY, YET LACKS THE PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE TO ETHICALLY HANDLE A POPULATION THAT LARGE. THIS LACK OF MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION BEYOND CAPACITY, COMBINED WITH A RAT INFESTATION, HAS LOWERED EMPLOYEE AND VOLUNTEER MORALE AND POSES SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES.

LAKE COUNTY SUPERVISORS DISCUSS BUDGET (GOV) JB 6/19/14

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DISCUSSED THE COUNTY RECOMMENDED BUDGET AT MEETING ON TUESDAY.

THE FOCUS OF THE MEETING WAS TO ADDRESS THE $1.8 MILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALL IN THE COUNTYS GENERAL FUND. THE BOARD AND THE LAKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER DISCUSSED SALARY SAVINGS, PUBLIC SAFETY REALIGNMENT, AND GEOTHERMAL ROYALTIES AS POSSIBLE WAYS TO BRIDGE THE FINANCIAL SHORTFALL. THE POSSIBILITY OF REDUCED HOURS AT THE MUSEUMS, ANIMAL CONTROL, AND LIBRARY DEPARTMENTS WERE ALSO INTRODUCED AS POTENTIAL RESOLUTIONS. A PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING THE BUDGET IS SLATED FOR SEPTEMBER 3.

CITY PAYS RIVER WATCH $60,000 TO END LAWSUIT. (GOV) JB 6/19/14

A SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED IN A LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST THE CITY OF WILLITS BY ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP, CALIFORNIA RIVER WATCH.

THE CITY HAS AGREED TO PAY RIVER WATCH THE SUM OF $60,000 FOR ATTORNEYS FEES AND INVESTIGATIVE COSTS. THE CITY ALSO AGREED TO ASSESS ALL SEWER COLLECTION LINES, FOLLOW ITS OWN SANITARY SEWER MANAGEMENT PLAN, AND PRIORITIZE LEAKS OF SEWERS NEAR WATERWAYS TO INSURE THEIR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT WITHIN TWO YEARS. WHILE THE TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT WERE AGREED UPON BY BOTH PARTIES, THE CITY DENIES EACH AND ALL OF THE CLAIMS MADE IN THE LAWSUIT BY RIVER WATCH.

KELSEYVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR STALKING, DRUGS (LAW) JB 6/19/14

A PEDESTRIAN CHECK BY A LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DETECTIVE RESULTS IN THE ARREST OF A KELSEYVILLE MAN FOR STALKING AND MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES.

47 YEAR OLD KENNETH SCOTT OSTERGAARD WAS CONTACTED BY THE DETECTIVE BECAUSE HE WAS STANDING NEAR THE PROPERTY LINE OF SOMEONE WHO HAD FILED A RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST HIM. A SEARCH OF OSTERGAARDS VEHICLE TURNED UP MARIJUANA, METHAMPHETAMINE, AND A RIFLE SCOPE. A SEARCH WARRANT WAS SECURED FOR OSTERGAARDS RESIDENCE WHERE DETECTIVES DISCOVERED AND ERADICATED 156 MARIJUANA PLANTS. OSTERGAARD WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

TASK FORCE ERADICATES 16,000 PLANTS IN MIDDLETOWN (LAW) JB 6/19/14

THE SHERIFFS NARCOTICS TASK FORCE LOCATE A MASSIVE MARIJUANA GROW SITE IN MIDDLETOWN.

DURING A ROUTINE OVERFLIGHT MISSION, THE TASK FORCE SPOTTED THE GROW SITE IN THE JERUSALEM VALLEY AREA OF MIDDLETOWN. THE PLANTS IN THE OUTDOOR GROW SITE WERE BEING CONCEALED IN A LARGE CORN FIELD ON JERUSALEM GRADE ROAD. DETECTIVES SUCCESSFULLY ERADICATED A TOTAL OF 16,709 PLANTS FROM THE PROPERTY, AS WELL AS CONFISCATING A LOADED .22 CALIBER RIFLE AND A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN AS EVIDENCE. NO ARRESTS WERE MADE AT THE TIME OF THE RAID.
