MCSO DEPUTY IN TRAINING PROGRAM (LAW) JB 6/614

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS REINSTATED THEIR DEPUTY IN TRAINING PROGRAM.

SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN HOPES THAT THE PROGRAM WILL ATTRACT LOCAL CITIZENS WHO ARE ALREADY VESTED IN THE COMMUNITY, TO FILL VACANT POSITIONS ALONG THE MENDOCINO COAST. ONCE CANDIDATES HAVE BEEN SELECTED AND HAVE PASSED A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, THEY WILL BE PAID TO ATTEND THE POLICE ACADEMY BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2015 FOLLOWED BY 3 MONTHS OF FIELD TRAINING. CARP DIE-OFF CAUSE STILL UNKNOWN (EVR) JB 6/6/14

THE CAUSE OF THE DEATHS OF THOUSANDS OF CARP IN LAKE MENDOCINO STILL REMAINS A MYSTERY TO LAKE OFFICIALS.

THE TESTS FOR THE INITIAL SUSPECTED CAUSE, KOI HERPES VIRUS, PERFORMED AT U.C. DAVIS YIELDED INCONCLUSIVE RESULTS AND OTHER TEST RESULTS ARENT EXPECTED FOR SEVERAL MORE WEEKS. THE NUMBER OF DEAD CARP, WHICH BEGAN WASHING UP OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED AT FIVE TO TEN THOUSAND. LAKE OFFICIALS ARE STILL WARNING VISITORS NOT TO SWIM OR FISH NEAR ANY DEAD CARP AND TO KEEP THEIR PETS AT A SAFE DISTANCE FROM THEM UNTIL MORE INFORMATION IS KNOWN AS TO THE CAUSE OF THE DEATHS.

FIVE ACRE FIRE IN LAYTONVILLE (LAW) JB 6/6/14

FIVE ACRES OF TIMBER AND AN OUTBUILDING WERE CONSUMED BY A WILDLAND FIRE IN A RURAL AREA WEST OF LAYTONVILLE.

THE FIRE, THAT STARTED SHORTLY AFTER 7:00PM ON WEDNESDAY, WAS LOCATED IN THE WOODS OFF OF BRANSCOMB ROAD. CAL FIRE AND LAYTONVILLE FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED QUICKLY WITH TANKERS, A HELICOPTER, FOUR ENGINES AND FIRE CREWS, A WATER TENDER, AND A BATTALION CHIEF. ALTHOUGH THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED IN ABOUT FOUR HOURS, THREE ENGINES AND CREWS REMAINED ON SCENE THURSDAY MORNING TO WATCH FOR HOT SPOTS. THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

ABALONE DIVER DIES OFF BIG RIVER BEACH (LAW) JB 6/6/14

AN UPPER LAKE MAN DIED WHILE ABALONE DIVING IN MENDOCINO BAY.

THE MENDOCINO FIRE DEPARTMENT AND MENDOCINO COAST HOSPITAL PARAMEDICS RESPONDED TO A REPORT A DIVER IN TROUBLE OFF OF BIG RIVER BEACH. FIREFIGHTERS AND EMTS TRAVERSED DOWN A STEEP CLIFF WHILE OTHERS RESPONDED ON JET SKIS TO A SWIMMER DRAGGING THE BODY OF THE MOTIONLESS VICTIM. 53 YEAR OLD DAVID ALAN LONGMORE OF UPPER LAKE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF LONGMORES DEATH IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION

UKIAH STUDENTS GET A LESSON IN FINANCIAL EDUCATION FROM THE SAVINGS BANK OF MENDOCINO COUNTY.

EMPLOYEES OF THE SAVINGS BANK RECENTLY TAUGHT 183 STUDENTS OF ST MARY OF THE ANGELS SCHOOL THE BASICS OF THE VALUE OF A DOLLAR AND WISE MONEY USE, INCLUDING SAVING, PRIORITIZING, AND BUDGETING. THE LESSON ARE PART OF THE ABA EDUCATION FOUNDATION TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE PROGRAM. SEVERAL LOCAL SCHOOLS, INCLUDING ST MARYS, OFFER A STUDENT SAVINGS PROGRAM GIVING CHILDREN HANDS-ON MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS BY DEPOSITING MONEY IN THEIR OWN STUDENT SAVINGS ACCOUNT AT THE BANK.

AUTHORITIES LOCATE MISSING NINE YEAR OLD (LAW) 6/6/14

A NINE YEAR OLD CLEARLAKE BOY REPORTED MISSING LAST WEEK HAS BEEN FOUND SAFE IN UTAH.

9 YEAR OLD NATHAN AYERS, WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING LAST WEEK BY HIS FOSTER MOTHER WHEN HE DIDNT RETURN HOME FROM SCHOOL, WAS LOCATED AT A TRUCK STOP ON INTERSTATE 80 IN LAKE POINT, UTAH. THE BOY WAS FOUND WITH 52 YEAR OLD TRACY BARSOLO OF CLEARLAKE, THE KEY SUSPECT IN THE ABDUCTION AND AYERS FORMER GUARDIAN. AUTHORITIES LOCATED THE PAIR BY TRACKING BARSOLOS CELL PHONE TO THE AREA OF THE TRUCK STOP.

IN AN EFFORT TO PROMOTE ECOLOGY AND FITNESS, A 15 YEAR OLD BOY PLANS TO KAYAK THE LENGTH OF CLEARLAKE THIS WEEKEND.

THE TREK FROM RODMAN SLOUGH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO HIGHLANDS PARK IS EXPECTED TO TAKE BETWEEN SIX TO EIGHT HOURS AND OTHER KAYAKERS AND NONMOTERIZED BOATERS AND INVITED TO JOIN IN AT VARIOUS POINTS ALONG THE WAY.

AIRPORT DAY THIS SATURDAY (PI) JB 6/6/14

THE UKIAH REGIONAL AIRPORT WILL HOST THE 6TH ANNUAL UKIAH AIRPORT DAY THIS SATURDAY.

THIS FREE CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS AERONAUTIC IS THE PUBLICS CHANCE SEE EVERYTHING FROM VINTAGE WARBIRDS TO EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT, AS WELL AS PLANES AND HELICOPTERS FROM CALFIRE, CALSTAR, AND THE US COAST GUARD. HELICOPTER AND FIXED WING PLANE RIDES, CALFIRE DEMONSTRATIONS, AND 300 MPH PASSES BY WWII FIGHTER PLANES ARE JUST SOME WAYS THAT THE LOCAL PILOTS GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE AIRPORT AND AVIATION.
