CALTRANS ANNOUNCES ENVIRONMENTAL AGREEMENT (TR) JB 6/16/14

CALTRANS HAS ANNOUNCED AN AGREEMENT ON ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT.

CALTRANS ESTIMATED THAT THE FIRST PHASE OF THE FREEWAY WILL COST $210 MILLION DOLLARS. THE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE FROM THE CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN ALLOCATED A $54 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS. THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME AND THE REGIONAL WATER BOARD HAVE NOW AGREED ON A PLAN AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS WILL BE TOURING THE SITE SOON TO SEE IF CALTRANS IS IN COMPLIANCE WITH THEIR REQUIREMENTS.

BROOKTRAILS BOARD INCREASES DAILY WATER RATION (GOV) JB 6/16/14

THE DAILY WATER RATION FOR BROOKTRAILS RESIDENTS HAS BEEN INCREASED TO 200 GALLONS PER DAY.

THE BROOKTRAILS DISTRICT BOARD VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO INCREASE THE DAILY WATER RATION BY 20 GALLONS PER DAY, RAISING IT TO 200 GALLONS. THE NEW ALLOTMENT WORKS OUT TO APPROXIMATELY 6000 GALLONS PER MONTH ON AVERAGE. BROOKTRAILS HAS ENOUGH WATER TO LAST THROUGH LATE JANUARY OR EARLY FEBRUARY, BASED ON THE PRESENT RATE OF USAGE AND THE LEVEL OF WATER RESERVES.

CRESTVIEW FIRE THREATENED HOME (LAW) JB 6/16/14

THE UKIAH VALLEY FIRE AUTHORITY RESPONDED TO A FIRE ALONG CRESTVIEW DRIVE THAT THREATENED A HOME ON TOP OF THE HILL.

THE FIRE, FIRST REPORTED AROUND 7:20PM LAST THURSDAY, STARTED NEAR THE ROAD AND MADE ITS WAY UP THE EMBANKMENT. UKIAH VALLEY FIREFIGHTERS POSITIONED THEMSELVES BETWEEN THE FIRE AND HOUSE ON TOP OF THE HILL AS THEY EXTINGUISHED THE BLAZE THAT BURNED LESS THAN AN ACRE. THE FIRE IS CONSIDERED SUSPICIOUS AND THE CAUSE IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION.

THREE NEW POLICE OFFICERS TO START IN UKIAH (LAW) JB 6/16/14

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT WELCOMES THREE NEW FACES TO THEIR RANKS.

POLICE ACADEMY GRADUATES JASON CHAPMAN, MATT EDWARDS, AND JOHN-PAUL TAMAYO HAVE BEEN HIRED BY THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT. ALL THREE NEW OFFICERS BELIEVE THAT PATIENCE AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE ARE KEYS TO BEING A GOOD POLICE OFFICER. THE DEPARTMENT CURRENTLY HAS THREE MORE OPEN POSITIONS AND THEY CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR OFFICERS AND VOLUNTEERS. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL NANCY SAWYER AT 467-5708.

UKIAH WANTS TO EXTEND MEASURE S (GOV/LAW) JB 6/16/14

THE CITY OF UKIAH IS LOOKING TO RETAIN ITS FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES BY ASKING VOTERS TO RENEW MEASURE S.

THE PUBLIC SAFETY MEASURE, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY PASSED IN 2005 HAS PROVIDED FUNDING TO BOTH THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE UKIAH VALLEY FIRE AUTHORITY. THE REPLACEMENT OF AGING FIRE EQUIPMENT, AND THE ABILITY TO STAFF 32 POLICE OFFICERS AND 15 FIREFIGHTERS HAVE ALL BEEN FUNDED IN PART BY MEASURE S. THE CURRENT ANNUAL SAFETY BUDGET FOR UKIAH IS APPROXIMATELY $8.6 MILLION DOLLARS WITH $2.4 MILLION DOLLARS BEING GENERATED BY THE MEASURE S SALES TAX.

MENTALLY ILL NOT GETTING HELP IN THE COUNTY (GOV) JB 6/16/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY GRANT JURY HAS STATED THAT CRISIS CARE OF THOSE WITH SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESSES IS LACKING IN THE COUNTY.

THE GRAND JURY POINTED OUT A SERIOUS OVERSIGHT IN THE PREPARATION OF A CONTRACT THAT WAS WRITTEN WHEN THE COUNTY PRIVATIZED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. THEIR REPORT STATED THE CLIENTS MOST IN NEED OF MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE WERE SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED FROM THE LANGUAGE OF THE CONTRACT. THE DRAFTING OF A NEW CONTRACT TO INCLUDE PROVISIONS FOR LEVEL 3 PATIENTS WAS RECOMMENDED AS THE JURY FOUND THE COUNTY WAS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE INTENT OF STATE LAW.

MENDOCINO COUNTY NEEDS DROUGHT INFO (GOV) JB 6/16/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY WATER AGENCY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS ARE ASKING RESIDENTS LIVING IN UNINCORPORATED AREAS OF THE COUNTY TO CALL IN TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DROUGHT HOTLINE IF THEY ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH THEIR WATER SUPPLY.

THESE CALLS HAVE PROVEN TO BE AN INVALUABLE SOURCE TO KNOW WHERE PROBLEMS ARE OCCURRING IN THE COUNTY WITH RESIDENTIAL GROUNDWATER. FOR THOSE RESIDENTS WHO ARE ON A WELL OR DRAW FROM A SPRING, AND WHO ARE ALSO CONCERNED THAT THIS SOURCE OF WATER WILL NOT LAST MUCH LONGER, OR IS ALREADY DRY, YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO CALL THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DROUGHT HOTLINE AT 463-4589. UKIAH MUNICIPAL POOL OPEN FOR THE SUMMER (PI) JB 6/16/14

THE UKIAH MUNICIPAL POOL IS NOW OPEN OFFERING RESIDENTS A GREAT WAY TO GET WET, COOL DOWN, AND ENJOY THE SUMMER.

SWIM LESSONS ARE TAUGHT TO APPROXIMATELY 500-600 PEOPLE EVERY SUMMER AT THE POOL, WITH THAT NUMBER INCREASING EVERY YEAR. ALONG WITH SWIM LESSONS, AQUA AEROBICS, SENIOR WATER EXERCISE, AND LAP SWIMMING ARE AVAILABLE. THE POOL PROGRAM IS OFFERING A TWO FOR ONE SWIM SPECIAL FROM 6 TO 8PM DURING SUNDAYS IN THE PARK CONCERTS. THE POOL IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 1 TO 4PM AND ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 1 TO 5PM WITH AN ADMISSION OF $5 DOLLARS PER PERSON.
