LAKE MENDOCINO SWIMMING BAN LIFTED (PI) JB 7/3/14

THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT SWIMMING IS NO LONGER PROHIBITED AT LAKE MENDOCINO.

THE SWIMMING BAN AT LAKE MENDOCINO WAS PUT IN PLACE FOLLOWING THE CARP DIE-OFF OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. IT WAS IN PLACE UNTIL TESTING OF FISH AND WATER QUALITY SAMPLES COULD BE CONDUCTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE. THE CDFW REPORTED THIS MORNING THAT ALL SAMPLES CAME BACK NEGATIVE FOR VIRUSES, TOXINS, AND PESTICIDES AND THE WATER QUALITY WAS DETERMINED TO BE ACCEPTABLE.

BUTTS FIRE STILL AT 30 PERCENT CONTAINMENT (LAW) JB 7/3/14

THE BUTTS FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN IN NAPA AND LAKE COUNTIES AND HAS NOW BURNED OVER 3800 ACRES.

THE FIRE IS BURNING IN A MIX OF GRASS, BRUSH, OAK, AND PINE TREES IN STEEP, RUGGED TERRAIN. FIREFIGHTERS ARE WORKING IN EXTREME CONDITIONS WITH HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY AND WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR ERRATIC WINDS. TWO HOMES AND SEVEN OUTBUILDINGS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED SO FAR AS THE FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN NORTHEAST INTO LAKE COUNTY TOWARDS SNELL PEAK. FIRE CREWS CONTINUE TO DEFEND STRUCTURES AND STRENGTHEN THE CONTROL LINE AROUND THE FIRE PERIMETER. AS OF 8:45 LAST NIGHT, THE FIRE WAS 30 PERCENT CONTAINED.

ANTI-FRACKING PETITION IN FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT (GOV) JB 7/3/14

A PETITION TO PUT AN ANTI-FRACKING ORDINANCE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT HAS BEEN SUBMITTED BY A LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP.

THE COMMUNITY RIGHTS NETWORK OF MENDOCINO COUNTY TURNED IN THE PETITION, WITH 6,536 SIGNATURES, TO PLACE THE MENDOCINO COUNTY COMMUNITY BILL OF RIGHTS ORDINANCE ON THE BALLOT THIS NOVEMBER. THE ORDINANCE IS DESIGNED TO BAN THE PRACTICE OF FRACKING TO EXTRACT OIL FROM DEEP UNDERGROUND. FRACKING IS A METHOD THAT USES FLUIDS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE TO FRACTURE ROCK DEEP UNDERGROUND ALLOWING MORE OIL TO FLOW INTO A WELL. THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF THE CONTROVERSIAL DRILLING METHOD IS STILL DEBATED.

FT BRAGG COASTAL TRAIL UNDER CONSTRUCTION (PI) JB 7/3/14

THE LONG AWAITED FT BRAGG COASTAL TRAIL IS NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

THE FT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL AWARDED A $4.25 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO GRANITE CONSTRUCTION FOR THE BUILDING OF A 4.5 MILE BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAIL, WITH PARKING, RESTROOMS, INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE AND OTHER FURNISHINGS ON THE CITYS RECENTLY ACQUIRED 92 ACRE OCEANFRONT PARK. THE FT BRAGG COASTAL TRAIL WILL CONNECT TO TRAILS AT POMO BLUFFS PARK, GLASS BEACH, AND MACKERRICHER STATE PARK. THE TRAIL IS PROJECTED TO COMPLETED AND OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN LATE 2015.

ILLEGAL GROW ERADICATED ALONG EAST ROAD (LAW) JB 7/3/14

AN ILLEGAL TRESPASS MARIJUANA GROW ALONG EAST ROAD WAS DISCOVERED YESTERDAY.

ACTING ON A TIP FROM A CONCERNED CITIZEN, DEPUTIES FROM THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE, INCLUDING SEVERAL K-9 TEAMS, SEARCHED A RIVER AREA ALONG EAST ROAD FOR THE REPORTED GROW SITE. THEY DISCOVERED THAT MARIJUANA WAS BEING CULTIVATED ALONG THE RIVER BED, WHICH IS PART OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA RIGHT OF WAY, AND THAT WATER WAS BEING DIVERTED FROM THE RUSSIAN RIVER FOR IRRIGATION. 254 PLANTS WERE ERADICATED FROM THE SITE HOWEVER NO SUSPECTS WERE APPREHENDED.

PUBLIC HELP REQUESTED IN PREVENTING WATER THEFT (LAW) JB 7/3/14

CONTINUING WATER THEFTS IN WILLITS HAS PROMPTED A REQUEST BY POLICE AND WATER OFFICIAL FOR THE PUBLICS HELP.

THE WILLITS NEWS REPORTED THAT POLICE CHIEF GERRY GONZALEZ AND WATER PLANT SUPERVISOR JC ENGLAND HAVE ASKED FOR THE PUBLICS HELP IN SPOTTING WATER TRUCKS STEALING WATER FROM FIRE HYDRANTS IN WILLITS. THE CITY BELIEVES THAT THE THEFTS ARE OCCURRING AT NIGHT AND IN LESS POPULATED AREAS. ONLY FIRE TRUCKS ARE CURRENTLY AUTHORIZED TO REMOVE WATER FROM FIRE HYDRANTS AND THE NEW HOWARD HOSPITAL HAS THE ONLY TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION WATER CONNECTION. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON WATER THEFTS SHOULD CALL THE WILLITS POLICE AT 459-6122.

CAL FIRE URGES ANYONE USING LEGAL FIREWORKS THIS YEAR TO USE EXTREME CAUTION DUE TO THE CURRENT DROUGHT EMERGENCY.

WHILE CALIFORNIA HAS A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR THE SALE AND USE OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS, THERE ARE MANY COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE THAT ALLOW SAFE AND SANE FIREWORKS, INCLUDING THE CITY OF LAKEPORT. FIREWORKS BOOTHS IN LAKEPORT ARE ALREADY BUSY AS PEOPLE PREPARE FOR TOMORROWS 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION. CAL FIRE WANTS EVERYONE USING SAFE FIREWORKS THIS YEAR TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID A FIRE. CAL FIRE HAS ALREADY RESPONDED TO OVER 2500 WILDLAND FIRES THIS YEAR.

KELSEYVILLE MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES (LAW) JB 7/3/14

A VEHICLE STOP IN LAKEPORT LEADS TO THE ARREST OF KELSEYVILLE MAN ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES.

A LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS NARCOTICS TASK FORCE DETECTIVE CONDUCTED THE TRAFFIC STOP OF A BLACK JAGUAR COUPE DRIVEN BY 53 YEAR OLD FREDERICK EDWARD SCHOEFER OF KELSEYVILLE AFTER HE NOTICED HIM DRIVING ERRATICALLY. THE DETECTIVES K-9 WAS DEPLOYED DURING THE STOP ON LAKEPORT BOULEVARD AND THE DOG DETECTED THE PRESENCE OF NARCOTICS SEVERAL TIMES. A SEARCH OF SCHOEFERS CAR RESULTED IN THE DISCOVERY OF 17 BAGGIES OF METHAMPHETAMINE PACKAGED FOR SALE. SCHOEFER WAS ARRESTED AND IS STILL IN CUSTODY WITH HIS BAIL SET AT $35,000.
