R.V. MAN ARRESTED WITH 47 GRAMS OF METH (LAW) JB 7/25/14

THE CHECK OF A SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE BY A LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A REDWOOD VALLEY MAN ON DRUG CHARGES.

A SHERIFFS CANINE UNIT NOTICED THE LEXUS SUV PARKED ON THE SHOULDER OF HIGHWAY 20 JUST EAST OF THE BEACHCOMBER RESORT IN LUCERNE. THE REPORTED OWNER OF THE CAR, 36 YEAR OLD STEPHEN ANTHONY THOMAS OF REDWOOD VALLEY, STATED THAT HE HAD JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE BY THE SHERIFFS CANINE DISCOVERED A CASE NEXT TO THE BATTERY OF THE CAR CONTAINING 47 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE. THOMAS WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN ARRESTED FOR SEX WITH TEEN (LAW) JB 7/25/14

A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN IS IN CUSTODY CHARGED WITH UNLAWFUL SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH 16 YEAR OLD GIRL.

A CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ARRESTED 25 YEAR OLD GAVIN DAVID CUMMINS AT ANDERSON MARSH STATE HISTORIC PARK. CUMMINS REPORTEDLY CONTACTED THE 16 YEAR OLD GIRL EARLIER AT WAL-MART AND THEN MET AT THE PARK LATER TO HAVE SEX. BY LAW, THE 16 YEAR OLD GIRL IS CONSIDERED A MINOR AND LACKS THE LEGAL CAPACITY TO CONSENT TO ANY SEXUAL ACTIVITY. CUMMINS WAS BOOKED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES AND IS DUE IN COURT ON SEPTEMBER 16.

MENDOCINO COLLEGE RECEIVES REACCREDIDATION (ED) JB 7/25/14

MENDOCINO COLLEGE HAS RECEIVED OFFICIAL NOTICE OF REACCREDIDATION FOR THE NEXT SIX YEARS.

THE ACCREDITING COMMISSION FOR COMMUNITY AND JUNIOR COLLEGES NOTIFIED MENDOCINO COLLEGE OF THE NEW SIX YEAR APPROVAL STATUS EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATION FOR THE COLLEGE STATED THAT THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS IS A VOLUNTARY SYSTEM OF SELF-REGULATION AND ASSURES THE PUBLIC THAT MENDOCINO COLLEGE MEETS SPECIFIC STANDARDS. IT ALSO ENSURES THAT THE EDUCATION EARNED AT THE COLLEGE IS OF VALUE TO THE STUDENTS THAT EARNED IT.

EXPERTS DISCUSS INVASIVE PLANTS IN LAKE COUNTY (EVR) JB 7/25/14

THE MAJORITY OF INVASIVE PLANTS TAKE OVER PLOTS OF LAND AND IMPEDE THE GROWTH OF OTHER VEGETATION, CONSUMING MORE WATER THAN THE NATIVE PLANTS IN MOST CASES. THE EXPANDING NATURE OF INVASIVE PLANTS AND LIMITED RESOURCES TO CONTROL THEM MAKES IT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT FOR INDIVIDUALS IN THE COUNTY TO DILIGENTLY MAINTAIN THEIR PROPERTY.

L.C. COUNTERSUING LANDSLIDE HOMEOWNERS (GOV) JB 7/25/14

A GROUP OF HOMEOWNERS WHO BLAME THE COUNTY FOR A DAMAGING LANDSLIDE LAST YEAR HAVE BEEN COUNTERSUED BY LAKE COUNTY OFFICIALS.

THE LAKESIDE HEIGHTS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION IS BEING BLAMED FOR A LANDSLIDE THAT DAMAGED AND DEVALUED HOMES IN THE AREA DUE TO FAILURE OF MAINTAINING THEIR LANDSCAPING, VEGETATION AND IRRIGATION SYSTEM. THE LAWSUIT IS IN RESPONSE TO THE ASSOCIATIONS FILING OF A LAWSUIT LAST YEAR, CLAIMING THAT THE LANDSLIDE WAS CAUSED BY LEAKS IN THE COUNTYS WATER SYSTEM. NEITHER OF THE LAWSUITS NAMES THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGES BEING SOUGHT.

MCRPD APPROVES PRELIMINARY BUDGET (GOV) JB 7/25/14

THE MENDOCINO COAST RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT HAS APPROVED A PRELIMINARY BUDGET FOR THE 2014-15 FISCAL YEAR.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE MCRPD MET LAST WEEK TO APPROVE THE BUDGET. THE FINANCIAL FORECAST LOOKS POSITIVE FOR THE DISTRICT, HOWEVER THE BUDGET REMAINS CONSERVATIVE DUE TO ONGOING EFFORTS BY THE BOARD TO RESOLVE THE DISTRICTS CURRENT CHAPTER 9 BANKRUPTCY STATUS. THE BUDGET SHOWS THE DISTRICT IN THE BLACK FOR A SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR, WITH PROJECTED NET REVENUE OF OVER $28,000.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE LOOKS AT POSSIBLE RATE HIKE (GOV//PI) JB 7/25/14

A WATER AND SEWER RATE STUDY HAS BEEN LAUNCHED BY THE HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE COMMUNITY SERVICES DISTRICT.

THE DISTRICT MET THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS THE HIRING OF AN INDEPENDENT CONSULTING FIRM TO CONDUCT THE RATE STUDY TO ASSESS THE POSSIBILITY OF RATE HIKES DUE TO NEW WATER TREATMENT REQUIREMENTS. A NEW DRINKING WATER STANDARD WENT INTO EFFECT THIS MONTH REGARDING THE AMOUNT OF HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM IN DRINKING WATER. THE POTENTIAL RATE HIKE WOULD BE USED TO OFFSET THE COST OF TREATING THE WATER TO THE NEW STANDARD, POSSIBLY COSTING THE DISTRICT AS MUCH AS $4 MILLION.

FIRE BREAKS OUT IN HOPLAND HOME (LAW) JB 7/25/14

AN EARLY MORNING FIRE IN HOPLAND YESTERDAY DAMAGED A HOME AND PARTIALLY CLOSED HIGHWAY 101 FOR OVER AN HOUR.

MULTIPLE FIRE AGENCIES RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE THAT WAS FIRST REPORTED JUST BEFORE 6:00 AM YESTERDAY MORNING. INITIALLY, THE FIRE WAS THOUGHT TO BE INSIDE THE HOPLAND HARDWARE STORE BUT IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE IN A HOME JUST SOUTH OF THE BUSINESS. A PASSERBY NOTICED THE FLAMES AND WOKE A MAN SLEEPING IN THE COTTAGE NEXT TO THE HOME. THE NORTHBOUND LANE OF HIGHWAY 101 WAS CLOSED FOR WELL OVER AN HOUR YESTERDAY AS FIREFIGHTERS EXTINGUISHED THE BLAZE.
