THE 57-YEAR-OLD RETIRED BUSINESS OWNER SAYS HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN HOW THINGS WORK IN THE CITY COUNCIL. HE STATES THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON LISTENING TO HIS CONSTITUENTS IF ELECTED, ASKING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. JOHNS SAYS HE WOULD ALSO TRY TO WORK ON THE HOMELESS ISSUES IN UKIAH, AS WELL AS IMPROVE CONDITIONS IN THE CITY FOR BICYCLISTS. MIDDLETOWN POOL TO REMAIN CLOSED DUE TO ALGAE (PI) JB 7/18/14

THE CLOSURE OF THE MIDDLETOWN POOL HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO COMPLETE THE REMOVAL OF ALGAE.

THE MIDDLETOWN POOL WILL REMAIN CLOSED FOR WATER MAINTENANCE FROM JULY 18 THROUGH JULY 23. PUBLIC SERVICES STAFF ARE WORKING TO REGAIN WATER CLARITY STANDARDS AND ENSURE THAT CHLORINE LEVELS ARE BACK AT A SAFE LEVEL FOR SWIMMING. HIGH LEVELS OF CHLORINE ARE TEMPORARILY BEING USED TO TREAT THE ALGAE PROBLEM. ONCE THE POOL IS REOPENED, IT WILL GO BACK TO ITS NORMAL HOURS OF 12-5 PM, WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY, THROUGH THE END OF THE POOL SEASON AUGUST 10.

CULVERT WORK STARTED ON BIG RIVER WATERSHED (EVR) JB 7/18/14

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A MULTI-PHASE RESTORATION PROJECT ON THE BIG RIVER WATERSHED BEGAN THIS WEEK.

THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT IS THE REPLACEMENT OF UNDERSIZED CULVERTS TO REDUCE SEDIMENTATION AS WELL AS AID IN THE PASSAGE OF ENDANGERED COHO SALMON. THE MAJORITY OF THE WORK ON THE CULVERTS WILL HAVE MINIMAL IMPACT ON THE PUBLIC AS THE CONSTRUCTION AREA IS APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES UP THE MAIN BIG RIVER HAUL ROAD. ACCESS WILL BE RESTRICTED EAST OF THE ROCK QUARRY DURING TIMES OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT USE. NELSON GULCH WILL BE THE LAST CULVERT REPLACED TO CONCLUDE THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT.

POLICE SEARCH FOR ASSAILANTS IN FT BRAGG (LAW) JB 7/18/14

FT BRAGG POLICE ARE ASKING FOR HELP FROM THE PUBLIC TO FIND A SUSPECT INVOLVED IN AN ATTEMPTED SHOOTING LAST WEEK.

OFFICERS FROM THE FT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE AREA OF MORROW AND CEDAR STREET LAST WEEK TO A REPORT OF POSSIBLE SHOTS FIRED. A WITNESS STATED THAT A MALE SUBJECT WAS CHASED DOWN THE STREET BY SEVERAL OTHER MALE SUBJECTS AND THAT THE VICTIM WAS SHOT AT DURING THE CHASE. OFFICERS LOCATED THE VICTIM AND DETERMINED HE WASNT INJURED. EVIDENCE AT THE SCENE CONFIRMED THAT AT LEAST ONE ROUND HAD BEEN FIRED. SLOW MOVING VEHICLES WITH CAMERAS IN FT BRAGG (PI) JB 7/18/14

A FLEET OF CAMERA EQUIPPED TRUCKS DRIVING AROUND FT BRAGG HAVE ATTRACTED NOTICE BY LOCAL RESIDENTS.

THE SLOW-MOVING WHITE TRUCKS WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE VIDEO CAMERAS MOUNTED ON THEM BELONG TO OSMOSE UTILITIES, A COMPANY CONTRACTED BY PG&E TO SURVEY POWER LINES. THE CAMERAS RECORD INFRARED HEAT SIGNATURES OF THE POWER LINES LOOKING FOR ANY DEFECTS IN THE POWER GRID. THE OSMOSE PACIFIC REGION GENERAL MANAGER STATED THAT THEY ARE SCANNING LINES 20 TO 30 FEET OFF THE GROUND AND THAT THEY DONT SCAN ANYTHING DOWN TOWARDS PEOPLES HOMES.

LOWER FLOWS INTO RUSSIAN RIVER SOUGHT (EVR) JB 7/18/14

A MENDOCINO COUNTY WATER AGENCY IS LOBBYING TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER RELEASED FROM LAKE MENDOCINO.

IN AN EFFORT TO SAVE WHAT LITTLE WATER RESERVES ARE LEFT IN LAKE MENDOCINO, THE RUSSIAN RIVER FLOOD CONTROL AND WATER CONSERVATION IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT IS SEEKING TO REDUCE THE MANDATED FLOW FROM THE LAKE INTO THE RUSSIAN RIVER. THE REQUEST TO THE STATE IS TO CHANGE THE WATER SUPPLY CONDITIONS BACK TO CRITICALLY DRY YEAR, REDUCING THE FLOW FROM 75 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND DOWN TO 25 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND. THE LAKE CURRENTLY IS AT LESS THAN 38 PERCENT CAPACITY.

UKIAH WALMART ROBBED BY MAN WITH GUN (LAW) JB 7/16/14

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ON THE HUNT FOR MAN WHO ROBBED WALMART WITH A GUN OVER THE WEEKEND.

UPD OFFICERS RESPONDED TO WALMART JUST BEFORE 8:00PM LAST FRIDAY TO INVESTIGATE THE REPORT OF AN ARMED ROBBERY. THE SUSPECT ALLEGEDLY WAITED IN THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE, THEN DISPLAYED A GUN AND DEMANDED MONEY. HE FLED ON FOOT WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF CASH AND WITNESSES SAY HE LEFT IN A BEIGE OR TAN 1990S 4-DOOR NISSAN SENTRA. THE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE OR HISPANIC MALE IN HIS MID 30S WEARING A LONG SLEEVED SHIRT, PANTS, DARK SHOES, AND DARK COLORED GLOVES. BICYCLIST INJURED IN WEEKEND CRASH WITH VEHICLE (LAW) JB 7/16/14

A LAKE COUNTY BICYCLIST WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A CRASH WITH A VEHICLE ON SATURDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL, THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 9:15PM ON THE NICE-LUCERNE CUTOFF WEST OF STOKES AVENUE. WILLIAM GUTTORMSEN OF NICE WAS RIDING HIS BICYCLE WHEN HE COLLIDED A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 65 YEAR OLD NACY DOUGLAS OF KELSEYVILLE. REPORTS INDICATED THAT GUTTORMSEN HAD HIT THE VEHICLES WINDSHIELD IN THE ACCIDENT AND HIS BICYCLE HAD DAMAGE ON THE REAR. GUTTORMSEN SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT AND WAS FLOWN BY REACH 1 TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.

NEW COUNTY POLICY RECOGNIZES MENDOCINOS STYLE (GOV) JB 7/16/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION IS WORKING ON A NEW POLICY PROHIBITING CHAIN RETAILER BUSINESSES IN THE TOWN OF MENDOCINO.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND THE PLANNING COMMISSION ARE LOOKING TO REVISE THE 2014 MENDOCINO TOWN PLAN TO PRESERVE THE CHARACTER OF THE HISTORIC TOWN. THE CHIEF PLANNER SAID THAT BUSINESSES THAT SHARE THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS AND HAVE 10 OR MORE ESTABLISHMENTS WITHIN A COMPANY SUCH AS MCDONALDS AND CVS WOULD QUALIFY AS A FORMULA BUSINESS AND, IN A HISTORICAL DISTRICT, THOSE WOULD BE PROHIBITED IN TOWN. THE PLANNING COMMISSION MEETS AGAIN TOMORROW TO FURTHER DISCUSS THE TOWN PLAN.

OIL FILTER GRANT ENCOURAGES COUNTY RECYCLING (EVR) JB 7/16/14

THE MENDOCINO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY HAS RECEIVED A GRANT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF USED OIL FILTERS.

THE GRANT, JUST OVER $132,000, WAS AWARDED TO THE WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY BY CALRECYCLE IN AN EFFORT TO BETTER EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON OIL POLLUTION. ACCORDING TO CALRECYCLE, THE FUNDS CAN BE SPENT FOR USED OIL AND FILTER COLLECTION, RECYCLING OF USED OIL, AND REDUCING THE POLLUTION OF STORM WATER FROM USED OIL. AS PART OF THE EFFORT, PEOPLE CAN BRING THEIR USED OIL FILTERS TO OREILLYS AUTO PARTS FOR A FREE REPLACEMENT DURING THE MONTH OF JULY.

LC PUBLIC WORKS STARTS BRUSH ABATEMENT (EVR) JB 7/16/14

THE LAKE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL BEGIN ITS SUMMER ROADSIDE BRUSH ABATEMENT PROGRAM.

THE FOCUS OF THE PROGRAM IS THE REMOVAL OF POISON OAK, PUNCTURE VINE, AND BLACKBERRY BUSHES THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF HERBICIDES ALONG SEVERAL COUNTY-MAINTAINED ROADS. RESIDENTS OR PROPERTY OWNERS ALONG THE SELECTED ROADS MAY OPT OUT OF THE BRUSH ABATEMENT SPRAYING PROGRAM BY CONTACTING THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS PRIOR TO JULY 23. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOGGS MOUNTAIN CLEANUP (EVR) JB 7/16/14

VOLUNTEERS ARE BEING REQUESTED FOR A CLEANUP OF THE POPULAR BOGGS MOUNTAIN SHOOTING AREA IN MIDDLETOWN.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE HAS ANNOUNCED ITS CONTRIBUTION OF $10,000 TO REDWOOD CHILDRENS SERVICE. THE CONTRIBUTION WILL ALLOW A SPECIAL SCHOOL PROGRAM TARGETING FIFTH GRADERS WITH ANTI-GANG EDUCATION TO CONTINUE ITS WORK AROUND THE COUNTY. FIRE NEAR MASONITE PROPERTY ON SUNDAY (LAW) JB 7/16/14

A FIRE ALONG HIGHWAY 101 NEAR UKIAH BROKE OUT IN THE AREA OF THE FORMER MASONITE PROPERTY.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM UKIAH, REDWOOD VALLEY, POTTER VALLEY, AND CAL FIRE ALL RESPONDED TO BLAZE THAT WAS FIRST REPORTED AROUND 1:43 SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE THREE-ACRE FIRE ONLY BURNED THE VEGETATION ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY NEAR THE NORTH STATE STREET OFF-RAMP. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDETERMINED AT THIS TIME. FIRE CREWS HAD THEIR HANDS FULL THE ENTIRE WEEKEND AS THIS WAS THE FOURTH FIRE THAT COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS HAD RESPONDED TO IN UKIAH VALLEY AREA IN TWO DAYS.

DEPT OF HEALTH WARNS ABOUT FRAUD PHONE CALLS (PI/GOV) JB 7/15/14

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HAS ISSUED A WARNING TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT A NEW PHONE SCAM BY CALLERS TRYING TO OBTAIN PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION.

THE CDPH HAS RECEIVED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT CALLERS WHO ARE CLAIMING TO BE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION INQUIRING ABOUT MEDICAL PROCEDURES WITH THE INTENT OF OBTAINING SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION. THE CALLERS HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO BE MOSTLY MALE WITH HEAVY FOREIGN ACCENTS AND HAVE BEEN TRYING TO OBTAIN BANK ACCOUNT AND MEDICAL HISTORY INFORMATION BY HINTING AT SOME FORM OF COMPENSATION. ACCORDING TO A REP FROM THE AGENCY, THE CDPH DOES NOT MAKE SUCH CALLS.

ABALONE SEASON ON SUMMER BREAK (EVR) JB 7/15/14

THE 2014 ABALONE SEASON ON THE MENDOCINO COAST IS ON SUMMER VACATION FOR A COUPLE MORE WEEKS.

THE RECREATIONAL ABALONE SEASON IS CLOSED FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, REOPENING AGAIN ON AUGUST 1. THE BREAK IN THE SEASON, IN CONJUNCTION WITH SEVERAL NEW RULES REGARDING THE TAKING OF ABALONE, HAS PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN PROTECTING THE PRIZED MOLLUSK FROM OVER FISHING. DIVERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE ABALONE BEFORE 8:00AM, WHICH ELIMINATES ABOUT A QUARTER OF THE LOW AND MINUS TIDES. STATE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE WARDENS HAVE NOTED A REDUCTION IN THE OVERALL CATCHES BY APPROXIMATELY 30 PERCENT.

K9 TEAM APPREHENDS WANTED PAROLEE (LAW) JB 7/15/14

A PAROLEE WITH AN OUTSTANDING ARREST WARRANT WAS APPREHENDED BY A CLEARLAKE POLICE K9 TEAM.

22 YEAR OLD TONY KETCHUM OF CLEARLAKE WAS OBSERVED BY CLEARLAKE POLICE ON PEARL AVENUE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. KETCHUM, WHO HAD A PAROLE WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST, IMMEDIATELY RAN FROM THE OFFICER AND DISAPPEARED. CLEARLAKE K9 OFFICER DEX LOCATED THE PAROLEE HIDING IN THE BACKYARD OF A RESIDENCE AND APPREHENDED HIM. KETCHUM WAS ARRESTED AND TRANSPORTED TO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL, AFTER INJURIES HE SUSTAINED IN THE ARREST WERE TREATED.

CLEARLAKE K9 FINDS DRUGS IN SECRET COMPARTMENT (LAW) JB 7/15/14

A TRAFFIC STOP BY A NEW CLEARLAKE POLICE K9 TEAM LEADS TO THE DUOS FIRST NARCOTICS BUST.

AFTER ONLY TWO WEEKS SINCE GRADUATING FROM K-9 TRAINING, CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICER TRAVIS LENZ AND HIS K-9 PARTNER DEX CONDUCTED THEIR FIRST SUCCESSFUL NARCOTICS ARREST. LENZ HAD CONDUCTED A TRAFFIC STOP OF JERRY JONES OF CLEARLAKE LAST THURSDAY AND DETERMINED JONES WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE BY DEX UNCOVERED A SECRET COMPARTMENT IN THE VEHICLE CONTAINING MORE THAN 3.5 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE. JONES WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

LAKE COUNTY FIRE NEW COBB MOUNTAIN STATION (LAW) JB 7/15/14

FIREFIGHTERS ON COBB MOUNTAIN SHOWED THE PUBLIC THEIR NEW FACILITY DURING AN OPEN HOUSE OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE THREE-BEDROOM FACILITY HAS BEEN IN USE BY THE SOUTH LAKE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW BUT THE EVENT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE STATION HAS BEEN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THE ORIGINAL CRAMPED LIVING QUARTERS, CONSTRUCTED IN 1925, HAVE BEEN CONVERTED INTO AN OPERATIONAL OFFICE. THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW FACILITY WAS TRIMMED BY ABOUT $35,000 AS SOME OF THE WOOD USED IN THE BUILDING WAS OBTAINED FROM THE LAKE COUNTY CONSERVATION CAMP.

CL MAN BUSTED FOR FIRING A GUN DURING ARGUMENT (LAW) JB 7/15/14

CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS ARREST A MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY FIRED A HANDGUN DURING A VERBAL ARGUMENT ON SUNDAY.

OFFICERS FROM THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON SYCAMORE STREET TO A REPORT OF GUNFIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. A PERSON AT THE SCENE TOLD POLICE THAT 35 YEAR OLD JOE MACARIO GARCIA HAD BEEN IN A VERBAL ARGUMENT WITH THE MANS SON. GARCIA THEN FIRED A HANDGUN, STRIKING A NEARBY INHABITED RESIDENCE, AND FIRED SEVERAL MORE SHOTS IN THE AIR BEFORE FLEEING. GARCIA WAS LOCATED BY POLICE AND ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES AND IS DUE IN COURT TODAY.

A NEW WORKERS COMPENSATION COST CONTROL PROGRAM IS BEING INTRODUCED IN LAKE COUNTY.

THE NEW PROGRAM, NAMED OUR SYSTEM, IS DESIGNED TO RETURN WORKERS WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED ON THE JOB, BACK TO WORK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WORKERS COMPENSATION COSTS WOULD BE REDUCED BY RETURNING EMPLOYEES BACK TO WORK WITH TRANSITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS, REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF TIME THE WORKER WOULD BE ON TRADITIONAL COMPENSATION. THE COST OF IMPLEMENTING THE SYSTEM IS ESTIMATED AT LESS THAN $38,000 WHILE THE PREDICTED SAVINGS IN THE FIRST YEAR ALONE IS ESTIMATED AT $200,000.

A SECOND FIRE WAS REPORTED JUST ACROSS THE OVERPASS FROM THE FIRST FIRE NORTH OF ORR SPRINGS ROAD. THE GRASSY HILLSIDE AND A TREE WENT UP IN FLAMES RIGHT BEHIND UKIAH AUTO DISMANTLERS BUT THE BUSINESS WAS SPARED FROM ANY DAMAGE. THE CAUSE OF BOTH FIRES IS STILL UNDETERMINED.

AN EARLY MORNING ROLLOVER ACCIDENT ON SUNDAY LEADS TO THE ARREST OF THE DRIVER FOR DUI.

26 YEAR OLD JUAN BARNABE WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND ON LAKESHORE DRIVE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS 1995 HONDA CIVIC EX. THE CAR WENT OFF THE ROAD AT EMORY AVENUE, HITTING A CONCRETE POLE AND ROLLING OVER, FINALLY COMING TO REST NEAR HOWARDS GROTTO RESTAURANT. BARNABE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF MINOR INJURIES AND THEN ARRESTED FOR DUI BY CLEARLAKE POLICE.

THE LONG AWAITED HAEHL CREEK TRAIL IN WILLITS IS NOW OFFICIALLY OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

OFFICIALS SAY THAT A 27 YEAR OLD MAN WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY AT AN ILLEGAL MARIJUANA PLOT IS SUSPECTED OF STARTING A WILDFIRE THAT HAS BURNED MORE THAN 4-1/2 SQUARE MILES OF FORESTED LAND IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

CALFIRE STATED THAT FREDDIE ALEXANDER SMOKE III WAS ARRESTED ON SATURDAY AND ACCUSED OF RECKLESSLY CAUSING A FIRE AND MARIJUANA CULTIVATION. THE AGENCY SAYS HE WAS DELIVERING MATERIALS TO THE GROW SITE IN SHASTA COUNTY WHEN THE EXHAUST FROM HIS TRUCK IGNITED DRY GRASS. OFFICIALS STATE THAT THE SO-CALLED BULLY FIRE HAS GROWN TO NEARLY 3000 ACRES AND MORE THAN 1000 FIRE PERSONNEL ARE INVOLVED IN FIGHTING THE BLAZE THAT IS JUST 10 PERCENT CONTAINED AS OF SATURDAY NIGHT.

A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN KELSEYVILLE OVER THE WEEKEND SENT ONE PERSON TO THE HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES AND CAUSED A POWER OUTAGE AND ROAD CLOSURE.

THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL REPORTED THAT AN SUV STRUCK A POWER POLE ON GADDY LANE NEAR LOASA ROAD JUST AFTER 12:30PM ON FRIDAY. THE POLE WAS FOUND SEVERED AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPORTED TO BE ON ITS SIDE IN A DITCH. ONE PERSON IN THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE CRASH AND WAS FLOWN TO AN OUT OF COUNTY HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. THE INTERSECTION OF SHERWOOD ROAD AND NORTH MAIN STREET IN WILLITS HAS SUFFERED FROM TRAFFIC BOTTLENECKS DUE TO THE AWKWARD ANGLE OF THE TURN AND THE LACK OF AN ADEQUATE TURN LANE. AN IMPROVEMENT PROJECT, SLATED FOR CONSTRUCTION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE OPENING OF THE WILLITS BYPASS, WOULD ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC DELAYS BY ADDING A LOOP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. CODY MASON, A RECENT GRADUATE OF THE SANTA ROSA POLICE ACADEMY, WAS SWORN IN AS A WILLITS POLICE OFFICER ON MONDAY. MASONS TUITION AND EXPENSES TO ATTEND THE ACADEMY WERE PAID BY A LOAN FROM THE MENDOCINO PUBLIC SAFETY FOUNDATION. THE LOAN WILL BE FORGIVEN UPON MASONS COMPLETION OF THREE YEARS OF SERVICE WITH WILLITS PD OR ANOTHER COUNTY POLICE AGENCY. AN EARLY MORNING FIRE YESTERDAY DESTROYED A GROUP HOME FOR CHILDREN IN KELSEYVILLE.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM THREE DIFFERENT AGENCIES RESPONDED TO THE FIRE AT A HOME ON SUNRISE DRIVE JUST AFTER 12:30 AM. THE RESIDENCE HOUSES CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND ALL FIVE OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THE HOME WERE SAFELY EVACUATED. AFTER THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL AND CLEAN UP BEGAN, THE KELSEYVILLE FIRE CAPTAIN STATED THE HOUSE WAS GOING TO BE A TOTAL LOSS AND THAT THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE WOULD BE INVESTIGATED.

A MAN WHO ROBBED THE HOPLAND SUBWAY SHOP AT GUNPOINT OVER THE WEEKEND WAS APPREHENDED IN RIVERSIDE.

A COORDINATED EFFORT BY THE HUMBOLDT, MENDOCINO, AND RIVERSIDE COUNTIES SHERIFFS DEPARTMENTS LED TO THE ARREST OF THE ARMED ROBBER. 32-YEAR-OLD JUSTIN GREGORY WAS BEING SOUGHT BY HUMBOLDT COUNTY SHERIFFS AFTER HE DISAPPEARED FROM HIS PARENTS HOME IN MCKINLEYVILLE OVER THE WEEKEND. USING A PHOTOGRAPHIC LINEUP, HIS PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION WAS MATCHED TO THAT OF THE MAN THAT ROBBED THE HOPLAND SUBWAY. HE WAS ARRESTED AT A RELATIVES HOME IN WILDOMAR BY THE RIVERSIDE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE AND IS BEING HELD ON $175,000 BAIL.

LAKE COUNTY PUTS GROW INITIATIVE ON BALLOT (GOV) JB 7/10/14

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS PLACED A NEW INITIATIVE REGARDING MARIJUANA CULTIVATION ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.

THE LAKE COUNTY COUNSEL STATED THAT THE INITIATIVE AIMS TO EXEMPT ALL LAKE COUNTY RESIDENTS RESIDING WITHIN THE UNINCORPORATED AREAS OF THE COUNTY FROM ANY ORDINANCES THAT WOULD LIMIT AN INDIVIDUALS OUTSIDE AND/OR GREENHOUSE HOME GARDENING EFFORTS. DISTRICT 5 SUPERVISOR ROB BROWN WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF TIME BEING WASTED BY THE BOARD AND ITS STAFF ON THE DISCUSSION OF THE TOPIC. THE BOARD APPROVED PUTTING THE INITIATIVE ON THE BALLOT WITH A 3-2 VOTE, WITH THE SUPERVISORS FROM BOTH DISTRICT 1 AND DISTRICT 5 DISSENTING.

FIRE BURNING EAST OF HIGHWAY 101 NEAR WILLITS (LAW) JB 7/10/14

FIREFIGHTERS FROM MULTIPLE AGENCIES WERE DISPATCHED TO A GRASS AND TIMBER FIRE NEAR WILLITS.

THE FIRE WAS FIRST REPORTED AT AROUND 4:30 LAST NIGHT ALONG HIGHWAY 101 NEAR SHIMMINS RIDGE AND HAD BURNED APPROXIMATELY 15 ACRES. FIREFIGHTERS FROM LITTLE LAKE FIRE AND CALFIRE WERE ON SCENE BATTLING THE BLAZE, AS WELL AS UKIAH AND SONOMA AIR TANKERS. AS OF 8 PM, THE FIRE WAS LISTED AT 50 PERCENT CONTAINED AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE HAD NOT BEEN DETERMINED.

MO MULHEREN RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL (GOV) JB 7/9/14

LOCAL RESIDENT MAUREEN MULHEREN HAS EXPRESSED HER INTEREST IN RUNNING FOR ONE OF THREE VACANT CITY COUNCIL SEATS IN THE CITY OF UKIAH.

AN INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENT, MULHEREN HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN LOCAL POLITICS AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION SINCE SHE WAS A TEENAGER. SHE’S HAD INTENTIONS TO RUN FOR LOCAL POLITICS FROM AN EARLY AGE AND DECIDED TO LEAP WHEN THIS OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF. SHE HAS STATED THAT HER FOCUS WILL BE ON SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS, MAKING SURE THAT POLICE AND FIRE HAVE THEIR NEEDS MET TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY AND WORKING TOWARDS A TAX SHARING AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE COUNTY.

APPARENT SUICIDE IN LOW GAP PARK (LAW) JB 7/9/14

TWO MEN PLAYING DISC GOLF DISCOVERED THE BODY OF AN APPARENT SUICIDE VICTIM IN LOW GAP PARK YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE MEN WERE PLAYING DISC GOLF ON THE COURSE AT LOW GAP PARK WHEN THEY CAME ACROSS THE BODY OF AN ELDERLY MAN HANGING FROM ONE OF THE DISC CATCHERS ON THE COURSE. UKIAH POLICE INITIALLY RESPONDED TO THE SCENE JUST AFTER 8:30 YESTERDAY MORNING AND THE CASE WAS EVENTUALLY TURNED OVER TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE FOR THE CORONER AND MEDICAL EXAMINER TO COMPLETE THE INVESTIGATION. THE MANS IDENTITY HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET.

SUPERVISORS APPROVE STYROFOAM BAN ORDINANCE (GOV) JB 7/9/14

AN ORDINANCE BANNING THE USE OF POLYSTYRENE FOAM CONTAINERS BY FOOD RETAILERS WAS APPROVED YESTERDAY BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

AFTER APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR OF DEBATE DURING YESTERDAYS MEETING, THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS PASSED THE ORDINANCE WITH A 3-1 VOTE. 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR JOHN PINCHES CAST A NO VOTE ON THE ORDINANCE, STATING THAT THERE WASNT ENOUGH TIME TO LOOK AT THE HARDSHIP ISSUES BUSINESSES WOULD FACE WITH THE NEW ORDINANCE. PINCHES STATED THAT ALTHOUGH HE DOES SUPPORT GETTING RID OF THE CONTAINERS, THERE WASNT ENOUGH TIME TO REVIEW ALL UNDERLYING ISSUES. THE ORDINANCE WILL GO INTO EFFECT ON MARCH 1, 2015.

HOPLAND SUBWAY ROBBED AT GUNPOINT (LAW) JB 7/9/14

AN UNIDENTIFIED MAN ROBBED THE SUBWAY SANDWICH SHOP IN HOPLAND AT GUNPOINT OVER THE 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND.

DEPUTIES FROM THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE RESPONDED TO THE HOPLAND SUBWAY AROUND 2:30PM ON JULY 4. AN EMPLOYEE OF THE SHOP STATED THAT MAN HAD ORDERED A SANDWICH AND WAITED FOR ALL THE OTHER CUSTOMERS TO LEAVE. THE SUSPECT THEN DISPLAYED A HANDGUN AND ORDERED THE EMPLOYEE TO GIVE HIM THE MONEY FROM THE REGISTER. AFTER TAKING AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF MONEY, THE SUSPECT, WHO IS DESCRIBED AS APPROXIMATELY 30 YEARS OLD WITH A DARK COMPLEXION, 63, AND OVER 200 POUNDS, FLED THE SCENE IN A DARK COLORED SUV. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS CASE IS ASKED TO CALL THE SHERIFFS TIP LINE AT 234-2100.

WILLITS WOMAN SUFFERS MAJOR INJURIES IN ATV CRASH (LAW) JB 7/9/14

A WILLITS WOMAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON A MENDOCINO COUNTY BEACH YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO CHP REPORTS, 28 YEAR OLD CECILE MACIAS WAS RIDING A 2002 HONDA SPORTRAX ATV ON BLUES BEACH SOUTH OF WESTPORT YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. SHE WAS RIDING IN FOGGY CONDITIONS WHEN HER ATV CRASHED INTO A ROCK, SENDING MACIAS OVER THE HANDLEBARS. MACIAS SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES HER HEAD STRUCK A ROCK CLIFF AND SHE WAS FLOWN BY CALSTAR TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHERE SHE IS LISTED IN FAIR CONDITION.

KELSEYVILLE WOMAN INJURED IN SOLO CAR ACCIDENT (LAW) JB 7/9/14

A SOLO VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON ORCHARD DRIVE IN THE BUCKINGHAM AREA SENT A KELSEYVILLE WOMAN TO THE HOSPITAL.

CHP REPORTS STATE THAT 81 YEAR OLD JANICE ELAINE SMITH WAS DRIVING HER 2011 FORD EASTBOUND ON ORCHARD DRIVE. AFTER PASSING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION WITH EASTLAKE DRIVE, SMITHS CAR DROVE ONTO THE DIRT SHOULDER, THROUGH A WOODEN FENCE, AND ONTO A RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY WHERE IT STRUCK THREE TREES. SMITH SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT AND HAD TO BE EXTRICATED FROM HER CAR BY RESPONDERS. SHE WAS FLOWN BY REACH 1 TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT.

TWO HOMES LOST IN TUESDAY CLEARLAKE FIRE (LAW) JB 7/9/14

A FIRE THAT BROKE OUT AT A CLEARLAKE TRAILER PARK YESTERDAY BURNED TWO HOMES AND THREATENED SEVERAL MORE.

A ROLLING-TYPE WEEDEATER WITH AN ILLEGAL SPARK ARRESTER AND MUFFLER ON IT IS LISTED AS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE THAT STARTED JUST AFTER 1:00 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE ARTS TRAILER PARK ON TULI LANE IN CLEARLAKE. MULTIPLE ENGINES FROM LAKE COUNTY FIRE AND CAL FIRE RESPONDED TO THE SCENE AND HAD THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL AROUND 1:30PM AND FIREFIGHTERS SPENT THE NEXT TWO HOURS MOPPING UP THE SCENE. THE FIRE BURNED TWO RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES, INCLUDING A TRAILER AND A SMALL CABIN BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS COULD CONTAIN THE BLAZE.

FUGITIVE FROM OKLAHOMA ARRESTED IN COVELO (LAW) JB 7/9/14

A FUGITIVE FROM THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA WAS APPREHENDED IN COVELO OVER THE WEEKEND.

DEPUTIES FROM THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE WERE PATROLLING THE COVELO AREA WHEN THE ENCOUNTERED 48-YEAR-OLD MARIO PALACIO RIDING A BICYCLE ON HOWARD STREET NEAR HIGHWAY 162. HE WAS KNOWN BY THE DEPUTIES FOR BEING A FUGITIVE FROM OKLAHOMA AND HAVING A FELONY WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST. WHEN QUESTIONED AND SEARCHED, THE DEPUTIES DISCOVERED A COMMERCIAL QUANTITY OF METHAMPHETAMINE PACKAGED FOR SALE. PALACIO WAS ARRESTED AND IS CURRENTLY HELD ON $50,000 BAIL.

LAKE COUNTY FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN SAN FRANCISCO (LAW) JB 7/8/14

AN ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT WANTED IN LAKE COUNTY SINCE JUNE OF LAST YEAR WAS APPREHENDED IN SAN FRANCISCO.

29 YEAR OLD GREGORY PIERRE ELARMS WAS ARRESTED BY LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE PERSONNEL IN SAN FRANCISCO AFTER BEING THE SUBJECT OF A MANHUNT FOR OVER A YEAR. ELARMS FACES MORE THAN 10 FELONY COUNTS INCLUDING THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF CLEARLAKE POLICE LIEUTENANT TIM CELLI DURING A HOME ROBBERY ON JUNE 29, 2013. FOUR OTHER SUSPECTS IN THE ROBBERY WERE APPREHENDED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT. ELARMS IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT ON JULY 22.

EXPLOSION AND FIRE IN NICE (LAW) JB 7/8/14

AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE DAMAGED MULTIPLE STRUCTURES IN NICE YESTERDAY.

A WITNESS WHO CALLED FIRE AUTHORITIES REPORTED HEARING A LOUD EXPLOSION AND SEEING SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM A TRAILER LOCATED ON CRUMP AVENUE. THREE STRUCTURES AT THE LOCATION WERE REPORTEDLY INVOLVED IN THE FIRE BUT IT IS UNCLEAR AS TO WHETHER THEY WERE INHABITED OR NOT. NO INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE INCIDENT AND THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL JUST AFTER NOON YESTERDAY.

KONOCTI COUNTY WATER DISTRICT WATER SHORTAGE (EVR) JB 7/8/14

THE KONOCTI COUNTY WATER DISTRICT EXPECTS TO DECLARE A WATER SHORTAGE EMERGENCY AS EARLY AS THIS WEEK.

THE AGENCY, LOCATED AT THE SOUTHERN END OF CLEAR LAKE, STATED THAT THE SHORTAGE ISNT FROM LOW WATER LEVELS BUT FROM AN ELEVATED ALGAE LEVEL IN THE LAKE. THE PURIFICATION EQUIPMENT USED BY THE WATER AGENCY IS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME TREATING THE TURBID WATER DUE TO THE HIGH LEVELS OF ALKALINE CAUSED BY THE ALGAE. THE KONOCTI COUNTY WATER DISTRICT CAN ONLY TREAT ABOUT 500,000 GALLONS PER DAY DUE TO THE INCREASE IN ALGAE. USAGE SPIKES HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED OF UP TO 690,000 GALLONS OF WATER PER DAY.

BUTTS FIRE NEARLY EXTINGUISHED (LAW) JB 7/8/14

BURNING FOR OVER A WEEK NOW, THE BUTTS FIRE IS NEARING FULL CONTAINMENT BY FIREFIGHTERS.

CAL FIRE ANNOUNCED THAT THE FIRE WAS NEARING 95 PERCENT CONTAINMENT, AFTER BURNING ROUGHLY 4300 ACRES IN NAPA AND LAKE COUNTIES. A MAJORITY OF THE FIRE CREWS HANDLING THE BUTTS FIRE WERE RELOCATED TO THE MONTICELLO FIRE IN YOLO COUNTY THAT STARTED FRIDAY NIGHT AND HAS ALREADY BURNED 6500 ACRES. THE EXTREME HIGH TEMPERATURES AND WINDS DURING THE DAYS HAVE MADE BATTLING BOTH OF THESE FIRES EVEN MORE DIFFICULT FOR FIRE CREWS AND AT LEAST FOUR FIREFIGHTERS HAVE REPORTED MINOR INJURIES.

A SERIES OF RAIDS CONDUCTED IN UPPER LAKE AND LAKEPORT YIELD MARIJUANA PLANTS AND A LARGE NUMBER OF FIREARMS.

THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE NARCOTICS TASK FORCE SERVED SEARCH WARRANTS ON MULTIPLE HOMES ON ELK MOUNTAIN ROAD IN UPPER LAKE, AS WELL AS HOMES ON EICKOFF ROAD AND LAKESHORE BOULEVARD IN LAKEPORT. 33 YEAR OLD JUSTIN JONES, OF UPPER LAKE WAS DETAINED AT ONE OF THE UPPER LAKE PROPERTIES AS 122 MARIJUANA PLANTS WERE ERADICATED. DURING A SEARCH AT THE HOME OF JONESS GRANDMOTHER, PATRICIA MCIVOR, DETECTIVES REPORTEDLY SEIZED 50 ASSAULT STYLE WEAPONS ALL BELONGING TO JONES, INCLUDING FOUR .50 CALIBER BMG RIFLES. JONES AND SEVERAL OTHER SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES.

NEW WATER REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR LOGGERS (EVR) JB 7/8/14

CALIFORNIA REGULATORS HAVE EXPANDED WATER REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR LOGGING COMPANIES IN RESPONSE TO THE STATES ONGOING DROUGHT.

THE CALIFORNIA BOARD OF FORESTRY NOW REQUIRES THE COMPANIES TO DISCLOSE HOW MUCH WATER THEY EXTRACT FROM ANY STREAM IN THE STATE FOR DUST CONTROL. THE REQUIREMENT PREVIOUSLY APPLIED ONLY TO STREAMS WHERE SALMON OR STEELHEAD WERE PRESENT. THE AMOUNT OF WATER TAKEN OUT OF RIVERS LIKE THE RUSSIAN AND EEL AS WELL AS SMALLER STREAMS WILL NOW BE MONITORED MORE CLOSELY AS THEIR LEVELS CONTINUE TO DROP FROM THE CURRENT DROUGHT CONDITIONS.

CALTRANS SUSPENDS WORK ON WILLITS BYPASS TODAY (GOV/TR) 7/8/14

CALTRANS SUSPENDS WORK ON THE WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT UNTIL THE ARMY CORPS PERMIT SUSPENSION IS LIFTED.

ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY CALTRANS, THEY HAVE NOTIFIED THEIR CONTRACTORS THAT WORK WILL BE SUSPENDED EFFECTIVE AT THE END OF THE DAY TODAY. LAST WEEK 45 TRADE WORKERS WERE LAID OFF BY CALTRANS AND ANOTHER 55 WORKERS WILL BE LAID OFF DUE TO THE SUSPENSION OF WORK. THE COSTS TO KEEP CONTRACTOR CREWS ON STANDBY AND OTHER DELAY COSTS HAVE ADDED AN ESTIMATED $800,000 TO THE PROJECT. CALTRANS STATES THAT THEY ARE WORKING WITH THE ARMY CORPS TO GET THE SUSPENSION LIFTED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

FIRE AT HAPPINESS ISLAND TRAILER PARK (LAW) JB 7/7/14

AN EARLY MORNING FIRE OVER THE WEEKEND DESTROYED A MOBILE HOME IN UKIAH.

UKIAH VALLEY FIRE AUTHORITY AND CAL FIRE RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AT THE HAPPINESS ISLAND MOBILE HOME PARK ON LAKE MENDOCINO DRIVE. THE PROXIMITY OF THE BUILDINGS TO EACH OTHER MADE THE FIRE PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO BATTLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO ANY RESIDENTS HOWEVER ONE MOBILE HOME WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND ANOTHER SUSTAINED FIRE EXPOSURE ON AN OUTSIDE WALL. FIRE OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE, AS THERE WAS NO INDICATION AS TO WHAT STARTED THE FIRE.

MENDO SUPERVISORS WANT TO BAN STYROFOAM (GOV) JB 7/7/14

JUST LIKE PLASTIC BAGS, STYROFOAM FOOD AND DRINK CONTAINERS SOON MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL MEET TOMORROW TO INTRODUCE A NEW ORDINANCE THAT WOULD PROHIBIT THE DISTRIBUTION OF STYROFOAM CONTAINERS BY RETAIL FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS. GROCERY STORES AND RESTAURANTS WOULD NO LONGER BE ABLE TO USE STYROFOAM CUPS, BOWLS, PLATES, OR FOOD CARRIERS. IF PASSED, THE ORDINANCE WOULD GO INTO EFFECT 180 DAYS AFTER THE FINAL ADOPTION. THE SUPERVISORS MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW AT 9:00AM.

LAYTONVILLE RESIDENT INJURED IN ROLLOVER (LAW) JB 7/7/14

A LAYTONVILLE MAN WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT NORTH OF SPY ROCK ROAD.

29 YEAR OLD SAMUEL BANNON EDER WAS DRIVING HIS 2002 JEEP CHEROKEE ON WILDWOOD ROAD WHEN HE STRUCK A DIRT EMBANKMENT AND ROLLED OVER. CHP REPORTS STATE THAT EDER SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT AND HE WAS FLOWN TO ENLOE HOSPITAL IN CHICO BY AIR AMBULANCE. THE GARBERVILLE CHP OFFICE IS CONTINUING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES IN CALIFORNIA (ECN) JB 7/7/14

THE MINIMUM WAGE IN CALIFORNIA HAS BEEN INCREASED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SIX AN A HALF YEARS.

AB10, SIGNED BY GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN LAST SEPTEMBER, WENT INTO EFFECT THIS MONTH, RAISING THE MINIMUM EMPLOYMENT WAGE TO NINE DOLLARS AN HOUR. A STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STATED THAT A LIVING WAGE IN LAKE COUNTY IS $13.84 FOR TWO ADULTS AND $23.21 PER HOUR FOR ONE ADULT AND TWO CHILDREN. THE MINIMUM WAGE WILL INCREASE AGAIN ON JANUARY 1, 2016 TO TEN DOLLARS AN HOUR.

HE HAS ALSO STATED THE IMPORTANCE OF POLICE AND FIRE SERVICES IN THE COUNTY AND, IF ELECTED, PLANS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE PROPERLY FUNDED. CANDIDATES INTERESTED IN RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL HAVE BETWEEN JULY 14 TO AUGUST 8 TO FILE WITH THE MENDOCINO COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICE.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGER IN CLEARLAKE (LAW) JB 7/7/14

A KELSEYVILLE MAN IS BEHIND BARS ON SUSPICION OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL IN CLEARLAKE.

CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO ST. HELENA HOSPITAL TO INVESTIGATE THE REPORTED SEXUAL ASSAULT. DETECTIVES FROM THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT TOOK OVER THE INVESTIGATION AND DETERMINED THAT 19 YEAR OLD ALEX STORKSON OF KELSEYVILLE WAS THE LEAD SUSPECT IN THE CASE. STORKSON, A FRIEND OF A MEMBER OF THE VICTIMS FAMILY WAS ARRESTED AT HIS FAMILY HOME AND WAS BOOKED INTO THE HILL ROAD CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

ROAD WORK IN UKIAH THIS WEEK (TR) JB 7/7/14

THERE ARE SEVERAL ROAD WORK PROJECTS ON THE UKIAH CITY STREETS THIS WEEK.

THE CITY OF UKIAH STREET MAINTENANCE DIVISION WILL CLOSE THOMPSON STREET FROM WEST CLAY TO WEST PERKINS STREETS TO THROUGH TRAFFIC TODAY. ON WEDNESDAY JULY 9, AND THURSDAY JULY 10, THOMPSON STREET WILL BE CLOSED FROM WEST CLAY TO WEST PERKINS STREETS TO ALL TRAFFIC FOR PAVING. WORK ON THIS STREET WILL BE PERFORMED FROM 7:30AM TO 4:30PM. PLEASE USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE DURING THESE HOURS OF CLOSURE.

COUNCIL MULLS WORDING FOR MEASURE S RENEWAL (GOV) JB 7/7/14

THE WORDING OF THE ATTEMPTED RENEWAL OF THE MEASURE S TAX INITIATIVE WAS DISCUSSED BY THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL LAST WEEK.

THE CITY COUNCIL AND MAYOR PHIL BALDWIN REVIEWED THE WAY THE RENEWAL OF MEASURE S IS TO BE WORDED ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT. THE MAYOR DID NOT AGREE WITH THE USE OF THE WORDS HOMELESS, GANGS, AND DRUGS IN THE DOCUMENT, EVEN THOUGH THOSE WORDS CAME DIRECTLY FROM UKIAH POLICE CHIEF CHRIS DEWEY DESCRIBING THE PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY THAT MEASURE S FUNDING WOULD BE USED TO HELP SOLVE. THE HALF CENT SALES TAX MEASURE PROVIDES THE CITYS POLICE AND FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES WITH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN MUCH NEEDED FUNDING EACH YEAR.
