LODGE COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE (LAW) JB 8/1/14

A SERIES OF FIRES CAUSED BY LIGHTNING CONTINUES TO BURN IN THE WILDERNESS LODGE AREA OF MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE LODGE COMPLEX FIRE INCIDENT HAS NOW BURNED A TOTAL OF 550 ACRES. THE FIRE IS BURNING IN HEAVY TIMBER WITH STEEP, RUGGED TERRAIN MAKING ACCESS DIFFICULT FOR FIREFIGHTERS. DRY FUEL CONDITIONS, ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES, AND LOW DAYTIME RELATIVE HUMIDITY WILL CONTINUE TO BE A CHALLENGE IN BATTLING THE FIRES. OVER 450 FIREFIGHTERS ARE CURRENTLY BATTLING THE LODGE COMPLEX THAT CURRENTLY STANDS AT ONLY 5% CONTAINMENT.

CAR CRASHES ON HIGHWAY 20, CATCHES FIRE (LAW) JB 8/1/14

A CAR BURST INTO FLAMES AFTER CRASHING ON HIGHWAY 20 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO CHP REPORTS, THE FOUR-DOOR BLACK LEXUS SEDAN WAS TRAVELING EAST ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR POTTER VALLEY WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE CAR SUDDENLY LEFT THE ROAD ABOUT A MILE WEST OF THE LAKE COUNTY LINE, STRIKING A MAILBOX AND THEN COLLIDING WITH A TREE. WHEN OFFICERS AND FIRE AGENCIES RESPONDED, THE DRIVER HAD LEFT THE SCENE AND THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES BUT FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE BEFORE IT COULD SPREAD TO THE NEARBY VEGETATION.

REACH BASE OPENING WILLITS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (LAW) JB 8/1/14

AFTER THREE YEARS OF DISCUSSIONS, REACH WILL OPEN A NEW HELICOPTER BASE AT THE WILLITS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT.

AS PART OF ITS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA EMERGENCY HELICOPTER SERVICE, REDWOOD EMPIRE AIR CARE HELICOPTER WILL OPEN A NEW BASE AT THE WILLITS AIRPORT IN NOVEMBER. THE NEW BASE WILL RESULT IN FASTER RESPONSE TIMES TO AREAS LIKE FT BRAGG AND COVELO SINCE THE NEXT NEAREST REACH BASES ARE IN LAKE COUNTY AND SANTA ROSA. THE BASE WILL BE STAFFED BY NURSES, PARAMEDICS, PILOTS 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, AND 365 DAYS A YEAR.

BROOKTRAILS TESTING SEWERS WITH SMOKE FOR LEAKS (PI) JB 8/1/14

THE SEWERS IN SOME AREAS OF BROOKTRAILS WILL BE TESTED FOR LEAKS THIS MONTH

WORK CREWS IN THE BROOKTRAILS AREA WILL BE TESTING SEWER LINES ALONG BUCKEYE DRIVE, PONDEROSA DRIVE, PRIMROSE DRIVE, TULIP DRIVE AND CAMELLIA DRIVE DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST. A NON-TOXIC SMOKE WILL BE PUMPED INTO THE PRESSURIZED SEWER LINE TO SEARCH FOR ANY LEAKS IN THE SYSTEM. LEAKS IN THE SEWER LINE LET RAINWATER IN DURING THE RAINY SEASON, DECREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SEWAGE TREATMENT. A NOTICE WILL GO OUT TO RESIDENTS 24 HOURS PRIOR TO TESTING IN AFFECTED AREAS.

WETLANDS NEAR UKIAH COSTCO SITE MAY BE PROTECTED (EVR) JB 8/1/14

A TWO ACRE AREA OF WETLANDS NEAR THE PROPOSED COSTCO BUILDING SITE MAY SOON BE DESIGNATED AS PROTECTED OPEN SPACE.

THE 2.47 ACRE SITE WAS ORIGINALLY DUG IN THE SEVENTIES AS A STORMWATER MANAGEMENT DEVICE AND HAS SINCE GROWN INTO WETLANDS. THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORTED PROTECTING THE AREA BY RECOMMENDING THAT IT BE REZONED FROM LIGHT MANUFACTURING/MIXED USE TO OPEN SPACE. MONITORING AND MAINTENANCE OF THE AREA WOULD BE MORE THAN LIKELY A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS. THE COMMISSION WILL NOW RECOMMEND AN ORDINANCE TO THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL DESIGNATING THE PROPERTY AS PROTECTED OPEN SPACE.

CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON TO HOST CONCUSSION TALK (GOV) JB 8/1/14

A COMMUNITY DISCUSSION ON CONCUSSION IDENTIFICATION AND PREVENTION WILL BE HELD IN KELSEYVILLE AND HOSTED BY CONGRESSMAN MIKE THOMPSON.

MORE THAN 3.8 MILLION SPORTS AND RECREATION-RELATED CONCUSSIONS OCCUR IN THE U.S. EACH YEAR AND CONCUSSIONS AND HEAD INJURIES ARE HAPPENING WITH GREATER FREQUENCY ACROSS ALL SPORTS. CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON, FORMER PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, AND SPORTS INJURY SPECIALISTS WILL SPEAK WITH ATHLETES, PARENTS, AND COACHES ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE, TREAT, AND PREVENT CONCUSSIONS AND HEAD INJURIES. THE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6 FROM 5:00-6:30 PM AT THE KELSEYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CENTER.

NEW WELL FOR MOUNT HANNAH ALMOST COMPLETED (PI) JB 8/1/14

A NEW WELL FOR THE MOUNT HANNAH WATER SYSTEM IS NEARING COMPLETION AND SHOULD BE OPERATIONAL WITHIN DAYS.

AFTER IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE WATER LEVEL IN THE STORAGE TANK SERVICING THE MT HANNAH AREA WAS DROPPING FASTER THAN IT COULD BE REPLENISHED, THE DECISION WAS MADE TO DRILL THE NEW WELL. WORK ON THE NEW WATER SOURCE IS NEARING COMPLETION AS DRILLERS HAVE REACHED 180 FEET OF THE PLANNED 200 FOOT WELL. FUNDING FOR THE NEW WELL IS BEING PROVIDED BY A GRANT FROM CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH.

FT BRAGG POLICE JOINS IN CRIME PREVENTION EVENT (LAW) JB 8/1/14

THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT IS JOINING THOUSANDS OF COMMUNITIES FOR A NATIONWIDE CRIME PREVENTION EVENT.

ON SATURDAY, FROM 5-7 PM, THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ENCOURAGING RESIDENTS IN NEIGHBORHOODS AND BUSINESSES TO LOCK THEIR DOORS, TURN ON OUTSIDE LIGHTS AND SPEND THE EVENING OUTSIDE WITH NEIGHBORS AND POLICE. THE 31ST ANNUAL NATIONAL NIGHT OUT CRIME AND PREVENTION EVENT WILL INVOLVE OVER 16,000 COMMUNITIES FROM ALL 50 STATES IN THE U.S. THE EVENT IS DESIGNED TO HEIGHTEN CRIME PREVENTION AWARENESS AND STRENGTHEN NEIGHBORHOOD SPIRIT AND POLICE-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.
