COUNTY BUDGET MEETINGS SCHEDULED IN AUGUST (GOV) JB 8/4/14

FIVE PUBLIC COUNTY BUDGET PRESENTATIONS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF AUGUST HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY EXECUTIVE OFFICE.

ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE BY COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO, THE PRESENTATIONS WILL INCLUDE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COUNTYS 2014/15 RECOMMENDED BUDGET, A STATE OF THE COUNTY UPDATE AND OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST. THE INTENT OF THESE PRESENTATIONS IS TO INFORM THE AUDIENCE OF THE WORKINGS OF COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND TO PROVIDE A HIGH LEVEL OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY TO ALL MENDOCINO COUNTY RESIDENTS. THE MEETINGS WILL BE HELD IN FT BRAGG, CALPELLA, UKIAH, WILLITS, AND GUALALA.

TRUCK GOES OFF CLIFF NEAR BODEGA BAY. (LAW) JB 8/4/14

TWO MEN ESCAPED SERIOUS INJURY AFTER THEY DROVE THEIR TRUCK OFF A CLIFF NORTH OF BODEGA BAY OVER THE WEEKEND.

ACCORDING TO CHP, 24-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN ZAPIEN WAS DRIVING HIS 2003 CHEVROLET PICKUP ON HIGHWAY 1 AROUND 10:00 PM WHEN IT WENT OFF THE ROAD AND OVER A CLIFF. THE TRUCK FELL ABOUT 50 FEET BEFORE LANDING ON ITS PASSENGER SIDE ON SALMON CREEK BEACH. ZAPIEN AND HIS PASSENGER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND ZAPIEN WAS ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DUI. THIS IS THE SAME STRETCH OF HIGHWAY WHERE ANOTHER DRIVER ROLLED HIS LEXUS DOWN AN 80-FOOT CLIFF LAST WEEK.

STATEWIDE WATER REGULATIONS GO INTO EFFECT. (EVR/GOV) JB 8/4/14

STATEWIDE WATER REGULATIONS FOCUSED ON REDUCING OUTDOOR URBAN WATER USE HAVE BEGUN, AND WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR 270 DAYS.

THE NEW REGULATIONS ISSUED BY THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD INCLUDE STOPPING ALL WASHING DOWN OF DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS, WATERING OUTDOOR LANDSCAPES THAT CAN CAUSE EXCESS RUNOFF, AND USING A HOSE TO WASH A MOTOR VEHICLE UNLESS USING POTABLE WATER. THE STATE WATER BOARD CAN EXTEND THE DURATION OF THE REGULATIONS IN THE EVENT OF ONGOING DROUGHT CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS CONSIDER OTHER MEASURES TO ENHANCE CONSERVATION EFFORTS.

LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE (LAW/EVR) JB 8/4/14

THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE INCIDENT CONTINUES TO BURN NEAR LAYTONVILLE.

CAL FIRE REPORTED THAT AS OF 7:30 PM LAST NIGHT, THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX HAS BURNED 2,700 ACRES. DUE TO THE SEVERE DROUGHT CONDITIONS AND ACCESSIBILITY CHALLENGES, THE FIRE CONTINUES TO GROW. FIRE CREWS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REMOVING DRIED AND DEAD VEGETATION AROUND RESIDENCES IN THE HORSESHOE BEND AREA. CURRENTLY, OVER 900 FIREFIGHTERS FROM AROUND THE STATE ARE BATTLING THE BLAZE THAT STANDS AT ONLY 10% CONTAINMENT.

HAY TRUCK CRASHES ON SR 162, KILLING THE DRIVER (LAW) JB 8/4/14

A MAN DRIVING A FULLY LOADED TRACTOR-TRAILER WAS KILLED WHEN HIS TRUCK VEERED OFF OF HIGHWAY 162 NEAR COVELO LAST WEEK.

60 YEAR OLD TRUCK DRIVER, JOHN AMANN, WAS DRIVING HIS BIG RIG LOADED WITH HAY ON HIGHWAY 162 ABOUT 10 MILES WEST OF COVELO WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE TRUCK PLUNGED OFF THE HIGHWAY, OVERTURNING DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND CRUSHING THE TRUCKS CAB. AMANN WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT AND HE HAD TO BE EXTRACTED FROM THE CAB BY THE LITTLE LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT USING THE JAWS OF LIFE. SADLY, AMANN WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT.

FOUR STRUCTURE FIRES IN LAKE COUNTY LAST WEEK (LAW) JB 8/4/14

LAKE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS WERE KEPT BUSY LAST WEEK AS FOUR DIFFERENT STRUCTURE FIRES DAMAGED HOMES ACROSS THE COUNTY.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM ACROSS LAKE COUNTY RESPONDED TO THE FIRES IN NICE, CLEARLAKE, LAKEPORT, AND HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE. PG&E FIRST RESPONDERS WERE DISPATCHED TO TWO OF THE FIRES TO HANDLE DOWNED AND ARCING POWER LINES AT THE SCENES. SEVERAL OF THE FIRES HAVE DISPLACED THE OCCUPANTS OF THE HOMES INVOLVED, ALTHOUGH NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED IN ANY OF THE INCIDENTS. A TOTAL ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE HAS NOT BEEN CALCULATED YET, BUT THE PROPERTY LOSS AND DAMAGE TO THE HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE HOME WAS ESTIMATED AT APPROXIMATELY $220,000.

KONOCTI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCHES AP (ED) JB 8/4/14

LAKE COUNTYS LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF A NEW MOBILE APP.

THE KONOCTI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF THE APP, GIVING PARENTS OF STUDENTS INSTANT ACCESS TO THEIR CHILDS ACADEMIC INFORMATION. PARENTS WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW THEIR STUDENTS GRADES, ASSIGNMENTS, ATTENDANCE HISTORY, AND ACCOUNT BALANCES. THE APP WILL ALLOW PARENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO REACT AT THE RIGHT TIME AS IT ALSO PROVIDES INSTANT NOTIFICATION IF A STUDENTS GRADE DROPS BELOW A CERTAIN POINT, OR IF THE STUDENT RECEIVES A GRADE ON AN ASSIGNMENT BELOW A PREDEFINED LEVEL.

MENDO COLLEGE COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE IN FT BRAGG (ED) JB 8/4/14

MENDOCINO COLLEGE WILL HOST AN OPEN HOUSE TODAY AT THE COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS IN FORT BRAGG.

ADMISSIONS STAFF AND A COUNSELOR FROM MENDOCINO COLLEGE WILL BE AT THE FT BRAGG CAMPUS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AVAILABLE AND TO HELP STUDENTS APPLY AND REGISTER FOR THE FALL. THE CLASS SCHEDULE FOR THE MENDOCINO COAST CENTER IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE, AND WILL ALSO BE OFFERED IN PRINT AT TODAYS EVENT. THE OPEN HOUSE WILL RUN FROM 10:00AM TO 3:00 PM TODAY AT THE COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS FACILITY ON DEL MAR DRIVE.
