LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE (LAW) JB 8/7/14

THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE IS NOW THREATENING OVER 40 STRUCTURES AS IT CONTINUES TO BURN IN NORTHERN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE FIRE HAS SPREAD EAST ALONG THE EEL RIVER CANYON AND HAS MOVED WITHIN 1 MILE OF THE BIG BEND LODGE AREA, ALONG LOW GAP CREEK. FIREFIGHTING PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT ARE ACTIVELY WORKING TO CONSTRUCT FIRELINES ACROSS THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE FIRE. THE NUMBER OF FIRE PERSONNEL HAS NOW CLIMBED TO 1570 PEOPLE ACTIVELY FIGHTING THE BLAZE THAT HAS NOW BURNED 4,300 ACRES AND STANDS AT 20% CONTAINMENT.

VAN CRASHES INTO UKIAH RESTAURANT (LAW) JB 8/7/14

A VAN CRASHED THROUGH THE FRONT OF A RESTAURANT ON SOUTH STATE STREET IN UKIAH YESTERDAY.

WORKERS AT THE EL MOJLCAJETE RESTAURANT ON SOUTH STATE STREET IN UKIAH WERE STARTLED WHEN A VAN DROVE THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 4:20 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AS THE DRIVER OF THE VAN WAS REPORTEDLY TRYING TO PARK IN A HANDICAPPED SPACE AND HIT THE GAS PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL WERE NOT CONSIDERED A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT AND THE DRIVER WAS NOT ARRESTED. NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE ON WHEN THE RESTAURANT WILL REOPEN FOR BUSINESS.

LAKE COUNTY BOS PUT LAKE SALES TAX ON BALLOT (GOV) JB 8/7/14

A SPECIFIC TAX TO BENEFIT CLEAR LAKE HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE BALLOT FOR A THIRD TIME BY THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

THE INCLUSION OF THE HALF-PERCENT SALES TAX MEASURE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT MARKS THE THIRD TIME THAT MEASURE TO BENEFIT THE WATER QUALITY OF CLEAR LAKE HAS BEEN INTRODUCED. THE NEW MEASURE IS SIMILAR TO MEASURE L, WHICH FAILED BY JUST 225 VOTES IN THE ELECTION LAST JUNE. THE MEASURE IS ESTIMATED TO GENERATE APPROXIMATELY $2.4 MILLION ANNUALLY TO BENEFIT THE WATER QUALITY OF CLEAR LAKE AND HELP FIGHT THE INFLUX OF INVASIVE SPECIES INTO THE LAKE.

RAIN BELIEVED TO HAVE CAUSED TWO ACCIDENTS (LAW) JB 8/7/14

DRIVERS WHO HAVENT SEEN RAIN IN A LONG TIME MISJUDGED THE WET ROAD CONDITIONS IN TWO SEPARATE ACCIDENTS IN LAKE COUNTY.

THREE PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN A COLLISION IN NORTH LAKEPORT WHEN A CAR SLID OUT ON A TURN ON LAKEPORT BOULEVARD AND STRUCK AN ONCOMING VEHICLE HEAD ON. BOTH DRIVERS WERE TRANSPORTED TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. A SECOND ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN AN SUV, TRAVELING FROM NICE TO LAKEPORT, HYDROPLANED THROUGH A LEFT TURN AND ROLLED OVER. THE DRIVER OF THE SUV WAS WEARING A SEATBELT AT THE TIME AND WAS UNINJURED IN THE CRASH.

MARIJUANA AND METH SEIZED DURING SEARCH (LAW) JB 8/7/14

THE SERVICE OF A SEARCH WARRANT IN CLEARLAKE OAKS RESULTS IN ONE ARREST AND THE SEIZURE OF MARIJUANA AND METHAMPHETAMINE.

NARCOTICS DETECTIVES FROM THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE SERVED THE SEARCH WARRANT AT AN ADDRESS ON WIDGEON WAY IN CLEARLAKE OAKS. 58-YEAR-OLD DAVID WAYNE CHRISTIANSEN WAS DETAINED DURING A SEARCH OF THE RESIDENCE AS DETECTIVES FOUND 102 MARIJUANA PLANTS BEING CULTIVATED IN THE BACKYARD AND ON THE ROOF. METHAMPHETAMINE WAS ALSO DISCOVERED AT THE RESIDENCE AND CHRISTENSEN WAS ARRESTED ON CHARGES RANGING FROM CULTIVATION TO POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE.

MIRANDA MOTT JOINS RACE FOR UKIAH CITY COUNCIL (GOV) JB 8/7/14

UKIAH RESIDENT AND ENVIRONMENTALIST, MIRANDA MOTT, HAS JOINED THE RACE FOR ONE OF THE OPEN SEATS ON THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL.

MOTT IS THE 6TH PERSON TO ENTER THE RACE FOR ONE OF THREE OPEN SEATS ON THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL. MOTT HAS STATED THAT SOME OF THE MOST IMMEDIATE CONCERNS THE CITY NEEDS TO ADDRESS ARE ITS HOMELESS RESIDENTS AND THE ONGOING DROUGHT. SHE HAS ALSO POINTED OUT THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CITY OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS. MOTT HOPES TO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO BECOME INVOLVED IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

CLEARLAKE MAN ARRESTED AGAIN FOR BURGLARY (LAW) JB 8/7/14

A CLEARLAKE OAKS MAN ARRESTED EARLIER THIS YEAR FOR A SERIES OF HOME THEFTS HAS BEEN ARRESTED AGAIN IN A SIMILAR CASE.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT 32 YEAR OLD RICHARD WILLIAM OKEEFE WAS APPREHENDED ON MONDAY AFTERNOON. OKEEFE APPARENTLY ENTERED A WOMANS HOME ON A RUSE AND STOLE PROPERTY FROM THE WOMANS PURSE WHEN SHE WENT TO GET HIM A DRINK OF WATER. HE USED THE SAME METHOD TO COMMIT A SERIES OF ROBBERIES IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR. OKEEFE WAS BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL WITH HIS BAIL SET AT $35,000.

TOY GUN BILL CLEARS ASSEMBLY PANEL (GOV) JB 8/7/14

A NEW BILL TO BAN IMITATION FIREARMS IN CALIFORNIA PASSED ANOTHER CRUCIAL TEST YESTERDAY.

SB199, A BILL THAT WOULD BAN MOCK FIREARMS LIKE THE ONE THAT 13 YEAR OLD ANDY LOPEZ HAD WHEN HE WAS FATALLY SHOT BY A SONOMA COUNTY SHERIFF, ADVANCED THROUGH THE STATE ASSEMBLY APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE. THE BILL PREVIOUSLY CLEARED THE STATE SENATE AND NOW HEADS TO A VOTE ON THE ASSEMBLY FLOOR AS EARLY AS NEXT WEEK. THE BILL WOULD REQUIRE REALISTIC AIRSOFT GUNS TO BE EITHER BRIGHTLY COLORED OR TRANSLUCENT TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM REAL FIREARMS. THE BILL WAS AMENDED TO EXCLUDE TRADITIONAL BB GUNS AND PAINTBALL GUNS.
