COUNTY SURVEY ON IMPACTS OF COMM OUTAGE (BB) JB 8/8/14

A NEW ONLINE SURVEY SEEKS INPUT FROM COUNTY RESIDENTS ON THE IMPACTS OF THE RECENT COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGE.

IN COORDINATION WITH THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY, THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE OFFICE IS ASKING COUNTY RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN A QUICK ONLINE SURVEY. THE PURPOSE OF THIS SURVEY IS TO GATHER DATA ON WHAT TYPES OF IMPACTS WERE FELT BY THE INTERNET AND PHONE SERVICE OUTAGES THAT WERE EXPERIENCED BEGINNING LAST SUNDAY. DATA GATHERED FROM THE QUICK SURVEY WILL ASSIST THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO AND ELECTED COUNTY LEADERS IN RESOLVING THESE CONNECTIVITY ISSUES AND PREVENTING CRITICAL SERVICES FROM BEING INTERRUPTED IN THE FUTURE. EL NINO FORECAST DROPS 20% FOR NORTHERN CAL (EVR) JB 8/8/14

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS DOWNGRADED THE POSSIBILITY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA EXPERIENCING A STRONG EL NINO WINTER.

THE MONTHLY REPORT ON THE LIKELIHOOD OF AN EL NINO WAS RECENTLY RELEASED BY THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER AT IT SHOWED THE POSSIBILITY HAD DROPPED FROM 85 PERCENT TO 65 PERCENT. EL NINO TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN THE JET STREAM IS PUSHED SOUTH, RESULTING IN HEAVIER WINTER RAINS AND STRONGER STORMS. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOES STILL EXPECT THAT NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WILL EXPERIENCE EL NINO CONDITIONS LATER IN THE YEAR, ALTHOUGH THE INTENSITY OF THE EVENTS MAY NOT BE AS STRONG AS EARLIER PREDICTED.

TWO DEATHS FROM WEST NILE VIRUS IN CALIFORNIA (PI) JB 8/8/14

TWO DEATHS DUE TO THE WEST NILE VIRUS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN CALIFORNIA THIS YEAR.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH HAS CONFIRMED THAT TWO PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN CALIFORNIA FROM WEST NILE VIRUS, ONE IN SHASTA COUNTY AND ONE IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. THE POTENTIALLY FATAL DISEASE IS TRANSMITTED TO HUMANS THROUGH MOSQUITO BITES AFTER THE MOSQUITOES BECOME INFECTED BY FEEDING ON INFECTED BIRDS. LESS THAN ONE PERCENT OF HUMAN INFECTIONS PROVE SEVERE, ALTHOUGH SENIORS AND INDIVIDUALS WITH WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEMS HAVE A GREATER RISK OF SEVERE COMPLICATIONS FROM THE VIRUS.

LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE (EVR) JB 8/8/14

EFFORTS TO BATTLE THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE ARE SHOWING SOME GAINS FOR FIREFIGHTERS.

FIRE ACTIVITY INCREASED YESTERDAY AS THE EASTERN FLANK OF THE FIRE PUSHED TO THE SOUTH. THE FIRE CROSSED THE EEL RIVER IN TWO AREAS AND CONTINUES TO GROW. STRUCTURE DEFENSE PREPARATION CONTINUES IN TAN OAK PARK AND AROUND TEN MILE CREEK. FIREFIGHTING PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT ARE ACTIVELY WORKING TO CONSTRUCT A FIRE LINE ACROSS THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE BLAZE. 1,734 TOTAL FIREFIGHTING PERSONNEL ARE NOW ENGAGED IN FIGHTING THE FIRE THAT HAS BURNED 4,800 ACRES AND STANDS AT 25 PERCENT CONTAINMENT.

AIR QUALITY ADVISORY ISSUED DUE TO SMOKE (EVR) JB 8/8/14

AN AIR QUALITY ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED IN THE COUNTY DUE TO THE SMOKE FROM SEVERAL ACTIVE WILDFIRES.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT ISSUED THE ADVISORY BECAUSE OF SMOKE, HAZE, AND DEGRADED AIR QUALITY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. REGIONAL WEATHER PATTERNS SUGGEST CONTINUED SMOKE IMPACTS FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS, WITH RELIEF POSSIBLE BY WEEKS END AS A WEST/SOUTHWEST WIND PATTERN DEVELOPS. DURING THE ADVISORY, INDIVIDUALS WITH CARDIAC OR RESPIRATORY DISEASE, THE ELDERLY, AND THOSE WHO ARE SENSITIVE TO AIR POLLUTION SHOULD AVOID ANY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

ZONE A DEER SEASON OPENS TOMORROW (PI) JB 8/8/14

THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED ZONE A DEER RIFLE SEASON OPENS TOMORROW HOWEVER HUNTERS WILL BE GREETED WITH LESS THAN PERFECT HUNTING CONDITIONS.

HUNTERS HEADED OUT FOR THE OPENING DAY OF THE ZONE A DEER RIFLE SEASON CAN EXPECT HOT WEATHER AND DEGRADED HUNTING PROSPECTS AS A RESULT OF THE CURRENT DROUGHT CONDITIONS. ZONE A, STRETCHING FROM WILLITS TO VENTURA COUNTY, IS THE LARGEST DEER HUNTING ZONE IN CALIFORNIA, HOWEVER THE ENTIRE ZONE AND ITS DEER POPULATION HAVE BEEN AFFECTED DROUGHT, AS WELL AS LOSS OF HABITAT, PREDATORS, AND INCREASED HUMAN POPULATION. THE SEASON RUNS THROUGH SEPTEMBER 21 WITH A LIMIT OF TWO BUCKS FORKED HORN OR BETTER.

UKIAH COUNCIL GIVES PALACE OWNER MORE TIME (GOV) JB 8/814

ONCE AGAIN, THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL VOTED TO GIVE THE OWNER OF THE PALACE HOTEL MORE TIME TO REHABILITATE THE VACANT BUILDING.

THE COUNCIL VOTED 3-1 ON WEDNESDAY TO AGAIN ALLOW ELADIA LAINES, THE OWNER OF THE PALACE HOTEL, MORE TIME TO COMPLETE REHABILITATION PROJECTS ON THE BUILDING. COUNCIL MEMBER BENJ THOMAS CAST THE SOLE NO VOTE AND, ACCORDING TO MAYOR PHIL BALDWIN, THE DECISION TO ALLOW MORE TIME FOR THE HOTEL PROJECT GOES AGAINST STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS. THE COUNCIL DID AMEND THE BUILDING WORK SCHEDULE TO REQUIRE SEVERAL ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT BE COMPLETED WITHIN FOUR WEEKS, INCLUDING CONTACTING CAL/OSHA TO HAVE RED TAGS REMOVED.

MENDOCINO BOS PUTS FRACKING ON BALLOT (GOV/EVR) JB 8/8/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED TO PUT A BILL BANNING FRACKING ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.

THE INITIATIVE MEASURE REGARDING FRACKING WAS APPROVED FOR THE UPCOMING NOVEMBER BALLOT ON TUESDAY BY THE BOARD. THE ORDINANCE SEEKS TO BAN INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH UNCONVENTIONAL EXTRACTION METHODS OF FOSSIL FUEL, BECAUSE THESE ACTIVITIES VIOLATE THE CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE OF THE COUNTY BY THREATENING THE HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENT, AND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF MENDOCINO COUNTY. FRACKING IS A METHOD OF OIL DRILLING THAT USES HIGH PRESSURE WATER TO CRACK THE SUBSTRUCTURE OF THE EARTH, ALLOWING ACCESS TO UNDERGROUND OIL DEPOSITS.
