STEADY PROGRESS IS BEING MADE IN THE EFFORTS TO CONTAIN THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE, INCLUDING VENTURA, SAN DIEGO, AND CONTRA COSTA COUNTIES, ARE MAKING STRONG HEADWAY AGAINST THE LODGE FIRE THAT HAS NOW BEEN BURNING FOR TWO WEEKS. COOLER WEATHER AND AN INCREASE IN THE RELATIVE HUMIDITY ASSISTED FIREFIGHTERS IN COMPLETING THEIR LINE IN THE AREA OF THE EEL RIVER. HEAVY SMOKE WILL CONTINUE TO BE PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE UKIAH VALLEY AS INTERIOR PORTIONS OF THE FIRE CONTINUE TO BURN. ALL MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS IN THE AREA HAVE BEEN DOWNGRADED TO EVACUATION WARNINGS. THE LODGE FIRE NOW STANDS AT 60 PERCENT CONTAINED AND HAS BURNED 12,336 ACRES.

UVMC UNVEILS $41 MILLION EXPANSION PROJECT (PI) JB 8/15/14

THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER HAS UNVEILED THE DETAILS FOR ITS NEW $41 MILLION EXPANSION PROJECT.

OVER THE NEXT YEAR AND A HALF, THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WILL SEE THE ADDITION OF 19 NEW ER ROOMS, AN EIGHT-BED INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, AND TWO NEW TRAUMA BAYS. THE HELIPAD, USED BY AIR AMBULANCES SUCH AS CALSTAR AND REACH, WILL BE MOVED TO THE ROOF OF THE HOSPITAL TO ALLOW FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ADDITIONAL PARKING LOT. THE EXPANSION PROJECT WILL AID UVMC STAFF IN ATTENDING TO THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF THE ESTIMATED 25,500 ER VISITS, 4,000 ADMITTED PATIENTS, AND 800 BABIES DELIVERED AT THE HOSPITAL ANNUALLY.

N. STATE STREET CRASH KNOCKS OUT POWER (LAW) JB 8/15/14

A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON NORTH STATE STREET NEAR MCDONALDS KNOCKED OUT POWER TO PARTS OF UKIAH YESTERDAY.

ACCORDING TO CHP REPORTS, THE DRIVER OF A 1988 DODGE DAKOTA WAS TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON NORTH STATE STREET JUST NORTH OF EMPIRE DRIVE WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE DRIVER, 65 YEAR OLD JERRY WILKEN OF POTTER VALLEY, TRAVELED OFF THE ROAD AND TRAVERSED THE SIDEWALK AND LANDSCAPING IN FRONT OF MCDONALDS, STRIKING A UTILITY POLE. THE POLE SHEARED OFF AND FELL INTO THE INTERSECTION, DOWNING SEVERAL POWER LINES. ALTHOUGH WILKEN CLAIMED TO CHP TO BE HAVING A MEDICAL EPISODE, HE WAS ARRESTED FOR SUSPICION OF DUI.

LAKEPORT UNIFIED SOLAR ARRAY TO POWER SCHOOLS (ED) JB 8/15/14

STUDENTS AT TERRANCE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN LAKEPORT WILL SEE A NOTICEABLE CHANGE TO THE CAMPUS THIS YEAR.

THE LAKEPORT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS ADDED A 2,400 PANEL SOLAR ARRAY NEXT TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS TO HELP SUPPLY POWER TO THREE SCHOOLS AND THE DISTRICT OFFICE. THE DISTRICT SIGNED A POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT WITH SOLAR CITY, SAVING THE DISTRICT THE COST OF PURCHASING THE ARRAYS. THE DISTRICT IS EXPECTED TO SAVE AN ESTIMATED $60,000 PER YEAR, AS THE POWER GENERATED BY THE NEW SOLAR ARRAY WILL CUT THE DISTRICTS ANNUAL ELECTRIC BILL BY 33 PERCENT.

REMOTE WILDLAND FIRE REPORTED EAST OF CLEARLAKE (LAW) JB 8/15/14

LAKE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO THE REPORT OF A WILDLAND FIRE BURNING IN A REMOTE AREA EAST OF CLEARLAKE.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT THE FIRE WAS FIRST CALLED IN AT ABOUT 1:15 YESTERDAY MORNING. LAKE COUNTY FIRE ORIGINALLY RESPONDED AND THEN REQUESTED A FULL WILDLAND RESPONSE OF SEVERAL ENGINES AND A DOZER FROM CAL FIRE. THE AREA OF THE FIRE WAS SO REMOTE, THE DOZER WAS BEING UTILIZED TO CUT A ROAD SO FIREFIGHTERS COULD GAIN ACCESS TO THE BLAZE. OFFICIALS AT THE SCENE REPORTED THAT THE FIRE WAS FIVE TO SIX ACRES IN SIZE, BURNING WITH A SLOW RATE OF SPREAD.

GOV BROWN SIGNS BILL TO PUT WATER BOND ON BALLOT (GOV) JB 8/15/14

GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN SIGNED NEW LEGISLATION ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT TO INCLUDE A COMPREHENSIVE NEW WATER BOND ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.

BROWN STATED THAT WATER IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF ANY CIVILIZATION AND FOR CALIFORNIA ITS THE PRECONDITION OF HEALTHY RIVERS, VALLEYS, FARMS AND A STRONG ECONOMY. WITH THIS BOND, LEGISLATORS FROM BOTH PARTIES HAVE AFFIRMED THEIR FAITH IN CALIFORNIAS FUTURE. THE $7.5 BILLION BOND PROVIDES FOR WATER USE EFFICIENCY AND RECYCLING AND ADDITIONAL WATER STORAGE. IT ALSO INVESTS IN SAFE DRINKING WATER AND THE RESTORATION OF WATERSHEDS AND INCREASED FLOWS IN SEVERAL RIVERS AND STREAMS ACROSS THE STATE.

BUDDHIST SCHOOL PLAN APPROVED BY PLANNING COMM (ED) JB 8/15/14

IN A UNANIMOUS VOTE ON WEDNESDAY, THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION APPROVED THE PLAN FOR A NEW BUDDHIST SCHOOL IN UKIAH.

THE COMMISSION APPROVED THE PLAN PROPOSED BY THE DHARMA REALM BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY TO OPEN A NEW EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS ON THE FORMER TRINITY SCHOOL SITE ON THE WEST SIDE OF UKIAH. THE UNIVERSITY WANTS TO EXPAND THEIR CLASSES INTO THE EIGHT BUILDINGS ON THE NEAR 5-ACRE SITE. SOME DISCUSSION WAS RAISED BY COMMISSION MEMBERS ABOUT INCREASED NOISE IN THE AREA AND UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS SAID THEY SHARED THE SAME CONCERNS BECAUSE BOTH FACULTY AND STUDENTS WOULD BE RESIDING ON THE NEW CAMPUS. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS SAID THEY WOULD KEEP THE NEW CAMPUS AS QUIET AND DARK AS POSSIBLE.

CHASE ENDS WITH DRUG BUST IN CLEARLAKE (LAW) JB 8/15/14

A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN CLEARLAKE ENDS WITH THE SEIZURE OF A LARGE AMOUNT OF NARCOTICS.

CLEARLAKE POLICE REPORTED THAT A HIGH SPEED CHASE ENSUED AFTER THE DRIVER OF A WHITE CHEVROLET SEDAN FAILED TO PULL OVER AFTER RUNNING A STOP SIGN ON 34TH AVENUE IN CLEARLAKE. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS FINALLY STOPPED, THE DRIVER, 31-YEAR-OLD JAMES REGALIA OF SAN PABLO, ADMITTED TO HAVING MARIJUANA IN THE CAR. A CANINE SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE TURNED UP 44 DIAZEPAM AND 119 HYDROCODONE PILLS, OVER 74 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, A SCALE AND PACKAGING MATERIAL, AND OVER $3,800 IN CASH. REGALIA WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.
