LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE UPDATE (LAW/EVR) JB 8/18/14

THE FINAL DAYS OF THE LODGE LIGHTNING COMPLEX FIRE ARE CLOSE AT HAND.

FIRE CREWS ARE NOW PATROLLING AREAS FOR SPOT FIRES WITHIN THE CONTINGENCY LINES. THE EVACUATION WARNING HAS BEEN LIFTED FOR THE AREAS SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 101, WEST OF CUMMINGS ROAD TO LEGGETT. MANY OF THE FIRE RESOURCES CONTINUE TO BE RELEASED FROM THE FIRE TO OTHER INCIDENTS OR BACK TO THEIR HOME UNITS. CAL FIRE AND COOPERATING AGENCIES WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR THEIR OVERWHELMING SUPPORT AND HOSPITALITY. THE LODGE FIRE HAS BURNED 12,346 ACRES AND NOW STANDS AT 80 PERCENT CONTAINED.

UKIAH CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS CHIPOTLE RESTAURANT (GOV) JB 8/18/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL DISCUSS WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT A CHIPOTLE RESTAURANT TO COME TO TOWN.

THE COUNCIL WILL MEET ON WEDNESDAY TO CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY OF THE CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL RESTAURANT CHAIN TO BUILD AN EATERY AT THE CORNER OF EAST PERKINS AND ORCHARD AVENUE. ONE OF THE POINTS OF DISCUSSION WILL BE WHETHER CHIPOTLE IS CONSIDERED A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. UKIAHS DOWNTOWN DESIGN RULES STATE THAT NO FAST FOOD RESTAURANT WOULD BE ALLOWED IN THAT LOCATION. CITY STAFF HAS SAID THAT, UNDER THE CITYS DEFINITION, CHIPOTLE IS NOT A FAST FOOD ESTABLISHMENT AND WILL RECOMMEND THE CITY COUNCIL TO ALLOW THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE RESTAURANT TO MOVE FORWARD.

CRASH CLOSES HIGHWAY 175 NEAR COBB, KELSEYVILLE (LAW) JB 8/18/14

AN ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 175 OVER THE WEEKEND TEMPORARILY CLOSED THE ROADWAY.

THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED BETWEEN COBB AND KELSEYVILLE ON HIGHWAY 175 AND WAS FIRST REPORTED AT 12:50 PM ON SATURDAY. A BMW WITH THREE OCCUPANTS IN IT HAD CRASHED THROUGH A UTILITY POLE AND FLIPPED ONTO ITS ROOF, STOPPING ABOUT 30 FEET OFF THE ROADWAY. THE HIGHWAY WAS CLOSED FOR THE SCENE TO BE CLEARED AND THE DOWNED PHONE AND CABLE LINES TO BE REPAIRED. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE INJURED IN THE CRASH IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME ALTHOUGH ONE AIR AMBULANCE WAS REQUESTED TO RESPOND TO THE SCENE.

MYSTERY LAKEPORT GIRL REUNITED WITH HER MOTHER (LAW) JB 8/18/14

A YOUNG GIRL FOUND AT A DOWNTOWN LAKEPORT BUS STOP WAS REUNITED WITH HER MOTHER.

THE LAKEPORT POLICE REPORTED FINDING THE GIRL, BELIEVED TO BE 12 OR 13 YEARS OLD, AT THE BUS STOP AT THIRD AND MAIN AROUND 12:30 AM. SHE WAS NOT PROVIDING ACCURATE INFORMATION REGARDING HER NAME OR FAMILY INFORMATION, AND AUTHORITIES BELIEVED SHE MIGHT HAVE SOME DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. AFTER NEARLY TEN HOURS, POLICE REPORTED THAT THE GIRLS MOTHER HAD BEEN LOCATED AND A LAKEPORT POLICE OFFICER TOOK HER TO MEET WITH CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES TO REUNITE HER WITH HER DAUGHTER.

WATER THIEF BUSTED IN WILLITS (LAW) JB 8/18/14

A MAN STEALING WATER IN BROOKTRAILS WAS CAUGHT IN THE ACT LAST WEEK.

DEPUTIES FROM THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE OBSERVED A LARGE COMMERCIAL WATER TRUCK TRAVELING WEST BOUND ON GOOSE LANE IN BROOKTRAILS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THEY LOCATED THE WATER TRUCK AT THE END OF DOGWOOD TERRACE, ALONG WITH THE DRIVER, 39-YEAR-OLD KEVIN BOUTHILLIER OF WILLITS. AT THE TIME DEPUTIES ARRIVED, BOUTHILLIER WAS ACTIVELY TAKING WATER FROM THE FIRE HYDRANT ON DOGWOOD TERRACE. THE INVESTIGATION SHOWED BOUTHILLIER WAS ILLEGALLY TAKING WATER FROM THE BROOKTRAILS TOWNSHIP AND HE WAS ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF UTILITIES.

PG&E TO RELEASE WATER INTO UPPER EEL RIVER (EVR) JB 8/18/14

PG&E WILL RELEASE WATER INTO THE EEL RIVER TO HELP OUT STEELHEAD THAT CALL THE RIVER HOME.

AT THE REQUEST OF BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES, PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC WILL RELEASE APPROXIMATELY 2,000 ACRE-FEET OF WATER FROM LAKE PILLSBURY IN TO THE UPPER EEL RIVER. THE WATER RELEASE IS DESIGNED TO CREATE A STABLE HABITAT FOR ENDANGERED STEELHEAD IN THE RIVER. THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE AND THE CDFW MADE THE REQUEST FOR THE WATER RELEASE TO PROTECT JUVENILE STEELHEAD FROM HIGH STRESS LEVELS CAUSED BY THE LOW, WARM WATER TO AVOID A POSSIBLE DIE OFF. THE RELEASE WILL ALSO ALLOW THE FISH TO ACCESS MANY OF THE RIVERS TRIBUTARIES DURING THE SPAWNING RUN.

ALLEGED DUI CRASH NEAR WILLITS LEAVES BOY DEAD (LAW) JB 8/18/14

A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON EASTSIDE ROAD NEAR WILLITS CLAIMED THE LIFE OF AN 18 YEAR OLD BOY.

ACCORDING TO CHP AND MENDOCINO SHERIFFS REPORTS, THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED NEAR WILLITS ON EASTSIDE ROAD WHEN 19 YEAR OLD SPARROW BROWN-STEELE LOST CONTROL OF HER TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND STRUCK A TREE, ROLLING THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. AN 18 YEAR OLD CALPELLA BOY WAS KILLED IN THE ACCIDENT AFTER HE WAS EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. BROWN-STEELE WAS ARRESTED ON SEVERAL FELONY CHARGES, INCLUDING GROSS VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER WHILE INTOXICATED AND SHE IS BEING HELD IN THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL WITH HER BAIL SET AT $200,000.

CLIMATE CHANGE STUDY LOOKS AT IMPACTS TO ROADS (TR) JB 8/18/14

A CLIMATE CHANGE STUDY IS BEING CONDUCTED TO LOOK AT IMPACTS TO ROADWAYS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND LOCAL TRANSPORTATION AGENCIES ARE CONDUCTING THE STUDY OF CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS ON THE ROADS IN COUNTIES ACROSS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, INCLUDING LAKE AND MENDOCINO. THE STUDY IS DESIGNED TO DETERMINE THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF RISING SEA LEVELS, INCREASING COASTAL EROSION FROM FLOODING, AND INCREASING LANDSLIDES AND WILDFIRES BY USING CURRENT CLIMATE CHANGE MODELING. A PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE STUDY IS PLANNED FOR AUGUST 28 AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IN FT BRAGG.
