DROUGHT WILL COST STATE $2.2 BILLION IN LOSSES (EVR/ECN) JB 8/20/14

ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS, THE DROUGHT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GREATEST ABSOLUTE REDUCTION TO WATER AVAILABILITY FOR AGRICULTURE EVER SEEN. CALIFORNIA FARMERS WILL EXPERIENCE A 6.6 MILLION ACRE-FOOT REDUCTION IN SURFACE WATER AVAILABLE FOR AGRICULTURE, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF JUST OVER 17,000 SEASONAL AND PART-TIME AGRICULTURAL JOBS. EVEN IF CALIFORNIA EXPERIENCES THE PREDICTED EL NINO WEATHER PATTERNS LATER IN THE YEAR, THE DROUGHT IS LIKELY TO CONTINUE THROUGH 2015.

OPPONENTS TARGET DIRT FOR WILLITS BYPASS (EVR/TR) JB 8/20/14

ONCE AGAIN, ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE LOOKING TO LEGALLY BLOCK PROGRESS ON CONSTRUCTION OF THE WILLITS BYPASS.

A RESTRAINING ORDER REQUEST, FILED ON TUESDAY, IS AIMING TO PREVENT MENDOCINO FOREST PRODUCTS FROM REMOVING NEARLY 900,000 CUBIC YARDS OF SOIL FROM A SITE THEY OWN TO BE SOLD TO CALTRANS AS FILL FOR THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. THE REQUEST, SCHEDULED TO BE HEARD TODAY, WAS FILED BY THE WILLITS ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER AND KEEP THE CODE. A PENDING LAWSUIT BY THE GROUP OVER THE FILL DIRT ALLEGES THAT MENDOCINO FOREST PRODUCTS AND COUNTY OFFICIALS FAILED TO CONDUCT ADEQUATE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES ON THE DIRTS REMOVAL.

CITY TO OFFER RECYCLED WATER PERMITS (EVR) JB 8/20/14

THE CITY OF UKIAH WILL SOON BE OFFERING PERMITS FOR THE NEW RECYCLED WATER TRUCK PROGRAM.

CUSTOMERS WITH TRUCKS INTERESTED IN GETTING RECYCLED WATER MAY APPLY FOR A RECYCLED WATER TRUCK PROGRAM PERMIT STARTING TOMORROW. THE RECYCLED WATER IS GENERATED FROM THE CITY OF UKIAHS WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT THROUGH AN ADVANCED TREATMENT PROCESS THAT INCLUDES FILTRATION AND DISINFECTION. THE USE OF RECYCLED WATER IS RESTRICTION TO SOIL COMPACTION, DUST CONTROL, AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES. ANYONE WITH QUESTIONS REGARDING THE PROGRAM SHOULD CALL JAROD THIELE AT 463-6755.

PETALUMA HUNTER ACCIDENTALLY SHOT DIES (LAW) JB 8/20/14

THE HUNTER THAT WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT OVER THE WEEKEND NEAR UPPER LAKE HAS DIED FROM HIS INJURIES.

52 YEAR OLD ABEL GARCIA OF PETALUMA WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT AND KILLED DURING A HUNTING TRIP IN THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST WHEN HE WAS MISTAKEN FOR A DEER HIS PARTY WAS TRACKING. THE VICTIMS FAMILY HAD CELL PHONES, BUT THE SIGNAL WERENT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE GPS SYSTEMS TO BE UTILIZED BY RESCUERS AND THEY HAD DIFFICULTY COMMUNICATING BECAUSE THEY ONLY SPOKE SPANISH. THE NORTHSHORE DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF STATED THAT THIS WAS THE DEPARTMENTS FIFTH EMERGENCY CALL INVOLVING A HUNTER IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS.

REP. HUFFMAN DISCUSSES INTERNET OUTAGE (GOV/BB) JB 8/20/14

CONGRESSMAN JARED HUFFMAN HELD AN INFORMAL DISCUSSION WITH COUNTY RESIDENTS ABOUT THE RECENT INTERNET OUTAGE ON THE COAST.

THE OPEN FORUM WAS HELD AT MENDOCINO COLLEGE ON MONDAY AND FORT BRAGG MAYOR DAVE TURNER WAS IN ATTENDANCE TO RAISE CONCERNS ABOUT THE RECENT CRIPPLING BROADBAND OUTAGE. HUFFMAN STATED THAT WHEN THE OUTAGE OCCURRED, IT HIGHLIGHTED WE HAVE A VERY FRAGILE SYSTEM AND THAT IT DOESNT EVEN COME NEAR TO MEETING THE BROADBAND STANDARDS WE NEED ON THE COAST. THE CONGRESSMAN MENTIONED THE POSSIBILITY OF AVAILABLE FEDERAL FUNDING OR FEDERAL PRESSURE IN ORDER TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.

UNDERGROUND TANKS PROHIBITED ABOVE GROUND (LAW) JB 8/20/14

UNDERGROUND FUEL STORAGE TANKS USED FOR ABOVE GROUND FUEL STORAGE IS NOW PROHIBITED.

CAL FIRE WANTS TO ADVISE THE PUBLIC THAT THE USE OF CONVERTED STEEL UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS AS ABOVE GROUND TANKS STORING FLAMMABLE OR COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS IS NOW PROHIBITED IN THE STATE. AN ABOVE GROUND TANK IS DEFINED AS A STORAGE TANK THAT IS INSTALLED ABOVE GRADE, AT GRADE, OR BELOW GRADE WITHOUT BACKFILL. CAL FIRE STATES THAT, BECAUSE OF DESIGN DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO TYPES OF TANKS, IT IS DIFFICULT, DANGEROUS AND COSTLY TON CONVERT AND UNDERGROUND TANK FOR ABOVE GROUND USE.

JEFFERSON TO TAKE FIRST LEGISLATIVE MOVE (GOV) JB 8/20/14

THE PROPOSED STATE OF JEFFERSON WILL MAKE ITS FIRST LEGAL MOVE TOWARDS SEPARATION NEXT WEEK.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT, ON AUGUST 28, THE STATE OF JEFFERSON MOVEMENT WILL MARK A MILESTONE IN ITS EFFORTS AS IT TAKES THE FIRST LEGAL STEP TO SEPARATE FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. MEMBERS OF THE MOVEMENT WILL TRAVEL TO SACRAMENTO AND FILE TWO COUNTIES DECLARATIONS OF WITHDRAWAL FROM THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, AS WELL AS HOLD A DEMONSTRATION ON THE STATE CAPITALS SOUTH LAWN. WHILE CONVERSATIONS IN THE LEGISLATURE ARE A START, THE MOVEMENTS GOAL IS ULTIMATELY AND EXPLICITLY A STATE SPLIT.

CDFW TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS ON STREAM CLOSURES (EVR) JB 8/20/14

FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICIALS WILL HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS AND GET THE PUBLICS INPUT ON PROPOSED REGULATION CHANGES FOR MENDOCINO STREAMS.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE WILL HOLD TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS A PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE STREAM GAUGE THAT CONTROLS THE LOW FLOW CLOSURE STATUS OF MENDOCINO COAST STREAMS. A CDFW REPRESENTATIVE WILL DETAIL THE PROPOSED REGULATION CHANGES AND INTERESTED PARTIES CAN COMMENT AND PROVIDE INPUT THAT WILL HELP SHAPE THE FINAL RECOMMENDATION TO THE FISH AND GAME COMMISSION. THE MEETINGS ARE TONIGHT FROM 79 PM AT THE ALEX RORABAUGH CENTER IN UKIAH AND ON SEPTEMBER 3 AT THE FT BRAGG TOWN HALL.
