MENDO COUNTY HAS FUNDING FOR NEW HOMEBUYERS (ECN/PI) JB 8/22/14

A NEW FUNDING PROGRAM TO AID FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS HA BEEN INTRODUCED IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

FIRST TIME, LOW TO MODERATE INCOME HOMEBUYERS IN THE COUNTY MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING HELP UNDER THE HOMEOWNERSHIP ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE COUNTY. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION ANNOUNCED THAT THE COUNTY HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR OVER $500,000 FROM THE STATE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM. THE NEW PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP BUYERS FILL THE GAP BETWEEN WHAT THEY CAN AFFORD FOR THEIR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS AND THE PRICE OF THE HOMES THEY WISH TO PURCHASE.

UKIAH CITY COUNCIL AGREES CHIPOTLE NOT FAST FOOD (GOV) JB 8/22/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL HAD NO OBJECTIONS TO BRINGING A CHIPOTLE RESTAURANT TO TOWN.

IN A 3-0 VOTE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL VOTED THAT THE CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL WAS NOT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT, OPENING THE DOOR FOR THE EATERY TO SUBMIT A PERMIT TO BUILD AN ESTABLISHMENT AT THE CORNER OF EAST PERKINS AND ORCHARD AVENUE. CITY PLANNER CHARLIE STUMP CITED OPINIONS BY CITY STAFF THAT CHIPOTLE WAS NOT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT AND THEREFORE NOT PROHIBITED UNDER THE CITYS DOWNTOWN ZONING LAW. CHIPOTLE WILL NOW GO THROUGH THE PERMIT APPLICATION PROCESS, HOPING TO OPEN THE NEW RESTAURANT IN AUGUST OF NEXT YEAR.

JUDGE ISSUES RESTRAINING ORDER ON WILLITS BYPASS (TR) JB 8/22/14

A NEW TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT.

IN AN UNEXPECTED MOVE ON WEDNESDAY, MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE CINDEE MAYFIELD GRANTED THE RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST THE MENDOCINO FOREST PRODUCTS COMPANY. THE ORDER PREVENTS THE COMPANY FROM CONDUCTING ANY EXCAVATION OF NEARLY 900,000 CUBIC YARDS OF SOIL TO BE USED AS FILL FOR THE BYPASS PROJECT. THE TIMING OF THE ORDER COULD DELAY THE PROJECT UP TO A YEAR AND COST ANOTHER $8-12 MILLION IN DELAY COSTS. THE ORDER WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL THE PARTIES MEET ON SEPTEMBER 8, TO TRY AND RESOLVE A PENDING LAWSUIT.

REDWOOD VALLEY HOME ROBBED AT GUNPOINT (LAW) JB 8/22/14

RESIDENTS OF A HOME IN REDWOOD VALLEY WERE ROBBED AT GUNPOINT YESTERDAY.

ACCORDING TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE, TWO MEN BROKE INTO A REDWOOD VALLEY HOME EARLY THURSDAY MORNING AND ROBBED THE RESIDENTS AT GUNPOINT. THE SHERIFFS OFFICE CONFIRMED THAT THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE IN THE AREA OF ROAD E AND COLONY DRIVE, HOWEVER THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THE SUSPECTS ARE STILL IN THE AREA. THE SUSPECTS ARE DESCRIBED AS BEING POSSIBLY HISPANIC OR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS INCIDENT IS URGED TO CALL THE TIPLINE AT 234-2100 OR 463-4086.

COUNCIL MEETS WITH MAYBERRY, RUFFING (GOV/LAW) JB 8/22/14

A SPECIAL MEETING WAS HELD BY THE FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF CITY MANAGER LINDA RUFFING.

THE CLOSED SESSION MEETING WAS HELD ON TUESDAY EVENING AND ALL COUNCIL MEMBERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE, AS WELL AS THE CITY ATTORNEY. PUBLIC COMMENT BEFORE THE MEETING WAS TAKEN AND NONE OF THE THREE SPEAKERS HAD ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT CITY POLICY. THE MEETING WAS CALLED IN RESPONSE TO THE RECENT ABRUPT DEPARTURE OF FORMER POLICE CHIEF SCOTT MAYBERRY. IN RESPONSE TO CHIEF MAYBERRYS CONCERNS WITH REGARDS ABOUT THE CITY MANAGERS PERFORMANCE, THE CITY COUNCIL HAS FORMED AN AD HOC COMMITTEE TO RECOMMEND POLICIES TO IMPROVE DEPARTMENTAL AND HUMAN RESOURCE INTERACTIONS.

WATER TEST FOR LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE INCONCLUSIVE (PI) JB 8/22/14

WATER TESTS IN CONNECTION WITH A RECENT LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE INCIDENT IN UKIAH HAVE COME BACK INCONCLUSIVE.

ACCORDING TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY, WATER SAMPLES TAKEN FROM THE UKIAH DISCOVERY INN HAVE COME BACK INCONCLUSIVE TO THE PRESENCE OF LEGIONELLA BACTERIA. THREE PEOPLE WERE HOSPITALIZED IN AUGUST WITH CONFIRMED CASES OF THE ILLNESS AFTER STAYING AT THE DISCOVERY INN BETWEEN JUNE AND AUGUST. THE OWNER OF THE DISCOVERY INN HAS HIRED A COMPANY SPECIALIZING IN REGULATING WATER SYSTEM SAFETY TO DISINFECT WATER LINES AND FOUNTAINS AS A PRECAUTION.

CLEARLAKE FELON ARRESTED ON POT, GUN CHARGES (LAW) JB 8/22/14

A MEDICAL MARIJUANA COMPLIANCE CHECK IN CLEARLAKE LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A CONVICTED FELON ON MARIJUANA AND GUN CHARGES.

CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A RESIDENCE ON 5TH STREET IN CLEARLAKE PARK AFTER RECEIVING AN ANONYMOUS CALL ABOUT A POSSIBLE ILLEGAL GROW. WHEN THE OFFICERS ARRIVED, THEY CONTACTED 36 YEAR OLD RUBEN CEJA GONZALEZ, A CONVICTED FELON OUT OF NEVADA AND LEARNED THAT HE LIVED AT THE RESIDENCE. OFFICERS COULD SEE MARIJUANA GROWING ON THE PROPERTY AND GONZALEZ ADMITTED NOT HAVING A PERMIT TO GROW, PROMPTING THEM TO ARREST HIM FOR CULTIVATION. A FURTHER SEARCH OF THE RESIDENCE TURNED UP TWO FIREARMS AND 37 LARGE MARIJUANA PLANTS. GONZALEZ WAS BOOKED ON CULTIVATION AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

KUSD OPENS ENROLLMENT FOR NEW HIGH SCHOOL (ED) JB 8/22/14

LAKE COUNTYS LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCED IT WILL BE OPENING THE FIRST NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN THE COUNTY IN OVER HALF A CENTURY.

THE KONOCTI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL OPEN THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR, THANKS TO A $1.2 MILLION GRANT THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA CAREER PARTNERSHIPS TRUST. THE FOCUS OF THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL IS ON HEALTH OCCUPATIONS; HOWEVER, STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN ANY COLLEGE OR CAREER PATH. BEGINNING IN FALL OF 2015, ONLY INCOMING NINTH GRADERS WILL BE ABLE TO ENROLL AS THIS IS A COMPREHENSIVE 4-YEAR PROGRAM.
