OUTFLOW FROM LAKE MENDOCINO REDUCED (EVR) JB 8/27/14

A COMBINED EFFORT BY TWO WATER AGENCIES HAS SUCCEEDED IN REDUCING THE FLOW OF WATER BEING RELEASED FROM LAKE MENDOCINO.

THANKS TO A JOINT LOBBYING EFFORT BY THE RUSSIAN RIVER FLOOD CONTROL &WATER CONSERVATION IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT AND THE SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY, THE OUTFLOW FROM LAKE MENDOCINO HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM 75 TO 50 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT SUCH A TEMPORARY URGENCY CHANGE OF PERMIT PETITION HAS BEEN GRANTED BY THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD. THE RRFCD IS HOSTING A PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE CURRENT WATER SITUATION ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 AT 6 PM AT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY FARM BUREAU.

UKIAH BOY REPORTED MISSING AFTER WEEKEND PARTY (LAW) JB 8/27/14

AUTHORITIES ARE SEARCHING FOR A MISSING UKIAH BOY WHO DISAPPEARED AFTER A PARTY OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A UKIAH BOY WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING SUNDAY MORNING. ALWOOD MICHAEL DEJESUS SMITH, WHO GOES BY THE NICKNAME TURTLE, WAS LAST SEEN AT A LARGE PARTY HELD UNDER PIONEER BRIDGE ON THE EEL RIVER IN POTTER VALLEY AROUND 2 AM SUNDAY MORNING. ALWOOD IS DESCRIBED AS 5-9, WITH BROWN EYES AND SHORT BLACK HAIR, WEARING A RED NORCAL SHIRT AND BLACK PANTS. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON ALWOODS WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL 463-6262.

USACE INSPECTS DAMS FOLLOWING NAPA QUAKE (EVR) JB 8/27/14

FOLLOWING THE 6.0 EARTHQUAKE IN NAPA, SEVERAL DAMS ACROSS CALIFORNIA WERE INSPECTED BY THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS.

WATERSHED DAMS OWNED BY THE ARMY CORPS, INCLUDING THE COYOTE DAM IN UKIAH, WERE THOROUGHLY INSPECTED AND FOUND TO BE UNDAMAGED FROM THE QUAKE. INSPECTED CORPS DAMS INCLUDE COYOTE VALLEY AND WARM SPRINGS, THE NEAREST TO THE QUAKES EPICENTER, AND NEW HOGAN AND FARMINGTON DAMS EAST OF STOCKTON. INSPECTIONS OF FLOOD RISK REDUCTION PROJECTS IN NAPA, INCLUDING A FLOOD WALL AND LEVEE ON THE NAPA RIVER, ARE STILL ONGOING. NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE DAMS HAS BEEN REPORTED BY THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS.

CHP WANTS DRIVERS TO STAY SAFE OVER LABOR DAY (LAW) JB 8/27/14

THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL IS ASKING FOR THE PUBLICS HELP IN ENSURING A SAFE LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

IN ANTICIPATION OF THE HOLIDAY, THE CHP IS PREPARING FOR ITS ANNUAL LABOR DAY MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD, WHICH BEGINS ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 AND CONTINUES THROUGH MIDNIGHT ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2. LAST YEAR DURING THE LABOR DAY MEP, 49 PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN COLLISIONS ON CALIFORNIA ROADWAYS, A 40 PERCENT INCREASE FROM THE SAME PERIOD IN 2012. IF YOUR LABOR DAY CELEBRATION INVOLVES ALCOHOL, ENSURE THOSE PLANS ALSO INCLUDE A DESIGNATED DRIVER.

POWER OUTAGE CAUSES SCHOOL CLOSURE IN LUCERNE (ED) JB 8/27/14

A WEEKEND POWER OUTAGE IN LAKE COUNTY FORCED CLASSES AT LUCERNE ELEMENTARY TO BE CANCELLED ON MONDAY.

A PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC TRANSFORMER WAS TRIGGERING BROWNOUTS IN THE AREA, WHICH LED TO THE POWER OUTAGE OVER THE WEEKEND. THE POWER LOSS AT THE LUCERNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFFECTED THE PHONE SYSTEM AND STUDENT DATABASE, AND CAUSED FOOD IN THE SCHOOL KITCHENS REFRIGERATOR TO SPOIL. PG&E HAD THE PROBLEM RESOLVED ON SUNDAY, BUT THE NEED TO REPLACE ALL THE SPOILED FOOD AND REPAIR THE STUDENT DATABASE CALLED FOR THE CLASSES TO BE CANCELLED.

STUDENT PRIVACY BILL APPROVED BY STATE ASSEMBLY (ED) JB 8/27/14

CALIFORNIAS ASSEMBLY APPROVED A FIRST-IN-THE-NATION ONLINE PRIVACY MEASURE WHICH PROHIBITS THE USE OF STUDENT PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR PROFIT.

SENATE BILL 1177, THE STUDENT ONLINE PERSONAL INFORMATION PROTECTION ACT, PASSED UNANIMOUSLY AND NOW HEADS BACK TO THE SENATE. COMPANIES PROVIDING ONLINE SERVICES TO AIDE IN THE CLASSROOM OFTEN REQUIRE STUDENTS TO CREATE ACCOUNTS THAT CAPTURE DATA AND PERSONAL INFORMATION. THE NEW BILL WOULD NOW PROHIBIT COMPANIES FROM MINING DATA BEYOND THE NEEDS OF THE CLASSROOM AND SELLING THE DATA FOR PROFIT. THE BILL WOULD ALSO BLOCK TARGETED ADVERTISING ON K-12 WEBSITES, SERVICES, AND APPLICATIONS.

LAKE, MENDOCINO HOSPITALS FUND NURSING EDUCATION (ED) JB 8/27/14

THREE LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTY HOSPITALS ARE SHOWING THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE ART OF NURSING.

FRANK R. HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL, AND THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER GENUINELY BELIEVE IN THE EDUCATION OF HIGHLY SKILLED NURSES. THE THREE HOSPITALS UNITED TO PROVIDE $80,000 TO THE NURSING PROGRAM AT MENDOCINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN 2014 ALONE. THE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE HOSPITALS ENABLE THE NURSING PROGRAM TO PROVIDE TOP CALIBER PROGRAMMING TO THEIR STUDENTS. TO DATE, ALL THREE AREA HOSPITALS HAVE CONTRIBUTED A TOTAL OF $502,000 IN SUPPORT OF THE NURSING PROGRAM AT MENDOCINO COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST OFFERS JOB ASSISTANCE (EMP) JB 8/27/14

THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST WILL BE OFFERING JOB ASSISTANCE TO THOSE INTERESTED IN WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING POSITIONS.

THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST PLANS TO FILL AT LEAST 10 OPEN FIREFIGHTING POSITIONS ACROSS THE FOREST, WITH FOUR POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN WILLOWS, ONE IN UPPER LAKE, AND FIVE IN COVELO. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF CURRENT AVAILABILITIES, ADDITIONAL VACANCIES MAY COME OPEN AND BE FILLED DURING THE PROCESS. FOREST OFFICIALS WILL BE OFFERING ASSISTANCE TO FEDERAL JOB APPLICANTS ON THURSDAY FROM 9 AM TO 2:30 PM AT THE WILLITS COMMUNITY CENTER.
