COAST MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH BURGLARY (LAW) JB 8/28/14

A GUALALA MAN WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH A BURGLARY AT A MANCHESTER STORE.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES CONDUCTED A TRAFFIC STOP IN GUALALA LAST WEEK OF A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 26 YEAR OLD AARON RUDD. RUDD, A CONVICTED FELON WITH AN ACTIVE OUT OF STATE WARRANT, WAS WANTED IN AS THE SUSPECT IN A BURGLARY AT THE S&B MARKET IN MANCHESTER LAST MONTH. A SEARCH OF RUDDS VEHICLE DISCOVERED A LOADED .40 CALIBER HANDGUN UNDER THE SEAT. BRASS KNUCKLES, AND EVIDENCE LINKING HIM TO THE S&B BURGLARY. RUDD WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

TWO INJURED IN HEAD-ON NEAR MENDOCINO COAST (LAW) JB 8/28/14

A HEAD-ON COLLISION ON THE MENDOCINO COAST SENT ONE MAN TO HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES.

THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL REPORTED THAT TWO MEN WERE INJURED WHEN THEIR TRUCKS COLLIDED HEAD-ON ON HIGHWAY 128 NEAR THE MENDOCINO COAST ON TUESDAY. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN 54-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM JOHNSON OF MENDOCINO LET HIS DODGE 1500 CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE IN A TURN. JOHNSON COLLIDED WITH A FORD F450 TRUCK DRIVEN BY 48-YEAR-OLD AURENS GILMORE OF HOPLAND. JOHNSON HAD TO BE EXTRICATED FROM HIS TRUCK BY FIRST RESPONDERS AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. GILMORE SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND WAS TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT.

NAPA SAYS QUAKE PRIVATE STRUCTURE LOSS TOPS $300M (PI) JB 8/28/14

CITY OFFICIALS IN NAPA RELEASED A PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF $300 MILLION IN DAMAGE TO PRIVATE STRUCTURES FROM THE RECENT EARTHQUAKE.

THE ASSESSMENT STEMMED FROM THE FIRST ROUND OF INSPECTIONS OF HOMES AND PRIVATELY OWNED BUILDINGS FOLLOWING SUNDAYS 6.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE. THE DAMAGE FIGURE DOESNT INCLUDE ANY GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, PUBLIC STRUCTURES OR PERSONAL BELONGINGS. WATER ISSUES CONTINUE TO BE THE MAJOR PROBLEM WITH 600 PROPERTIES AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH WATER SERVICE. THE NUMBER OF RED-TAGGED BUILDINGS HAS RISEN TO 114, WITH 58 HOMES AND 56 COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS DEEMED TOO DANGEROUS TO ENTER.

SUPERVISORS RESPOND TO GRAND JURY REPORTS (GOV) JB 8/28/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS REVIEWED AND APPROVED RESPONSES TO THE 2013/14 GRAND JURY REPORTS.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE GRAND JURY HAD REQUESTED RESPONSES FROM THE SUPERVISORS ON EIGHT DIFFERENT REPORTS. THE SUPERVISORS CONCLUDED THAT MOST OF THE FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE GRAND JURY WERE NOT WARRANTED AND SOME OF THE SUPERVISORS SPOKE IN GENERAL ABOUT THE ACCURACY OF THE REPORTS, WHICH HAS BEEN A FREQUENT CRITICISM BY MANY COUNTY OFFICIALS. IT WAS STATED AT TUESDAYS MEETING THAT SOME OF THE REPORTS HAVE PERSONALIZED CHARACTERIZATIONS IN THEM, AND NOT JUST FACTS.

CLEAR LAKE APPROACHES ZERO ON RUMSEY GAUGE (EVR) JB 8/28/14

THE WATER LEVEL IN CLEAR LAKE CONTINUES TO DROP TO ITS LOWEST LEVEL IN MANY YEARS.

PUBLIC BOAT RAMPS AROUND CLEAR LAKE HAVE BEEN CLOSING AT AN ALARMING RATE AS THE WATER LEVEL IN THE LAKE CONTINUES TO RECEDE. THE CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK CLOSED ITS RAMPS EARLIER THIS WEEK DUE TO THE LOW WATER LEVEL. THREE OF THE SIX RAMPS AT REDBUD PARK IN CLEARLAKE ARE CLOSED, WITH THREE STILL OPEN TO BOATS ON TRAILERS. RAMPS ARE STILL OPEN AT CLEARLAKE OAKS AND THIRD AND FIFTH STREET IN LIBRARY PARK. THE LAKE LEVEL IS CURRENTLY AT .06 FEET ON THE RUMSEY GAUGE.

RUSSIAN RIVER CLEAN UP COULD IMPACT SEPTIC SYSTEMS (PI) JB 8/28/14

NEW EFFORTS TO CLEAN UP THE RUSSIAN RIVER COULD IMPACT RURAL SEPTIC SYSTEMS.

NORTH COAST WATER QUALITY OFFICIALS ARE SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT TO REDUCE CONTAMINATION OF THE RUSSIAN RIVER WATERSHED THROUGH A PLAN THATS LIKELY TO HAVE BROAD IMPACTS ON RURAL RESIDENTS DEPENDENT ON SEPTIC SYSTEMS FOR WASTE DISPOSAL. OLDER, ON-SITE SEPTIC SYSTEMS MAY BE PERMITTING UNTREATED WASTE TO REACH LOCAL WATERWAYS. AMONG THOSE LIKELY TO HAVE A STAKE IN THE DISCUSSION ARE RURAL SEPTIC SYSTEM OWNERS IN SONOMA AND MENDOCINO COUNTY. THE WATER QUALITY BOARD IS DEVELOPING AN ACTION PLAN TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM THAT IT EXPECTS TO COMPLETE NEXT YEAR.

JELLYSTONE PARK COSTUMES STOLEN FROM PARK (PI/LAW) JB 8/28/14

SEVERAL COSTUME PIECES WERE STOLEN FROM THE JELLYSTONE RV PARK AND CAMP RESORT AT COBB MOUNTAIN.

AN OFFICIAL FROM THE JELLYSTONE PARK AT COBB MOUNTAIN STATED THAT SOMEONE BROKE INTO THE COSTUME STORAGE FACILITY AT THE PARK AND MADE OFF WITH SEVERAL EXPENSIVE COSTUME PIECES, INCLUDING THE HEAD OF YOGI THE BEAR. THE PARK IS ONE OF 75 CAMPS NATIONWIDE THAT FEATURES THE WARNER BROTHERS CARTOON CHARACTERS TO ENTERTAIN THE CHILDREN ATTENDING THE CAMP. THE PARK MANAGER STATED THAT THE COSTUME PIECES ARE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE, WITH THE YOGI HEAD BEING VALUED AT SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THE MISSING COSTUME PIECES IS ASKED TO CALL THE PARK AT 928-4322.

RESOURCE FAIR HELPING LAKE AND MENDOCINO VETERANS (PI) JB 8/28/14

A RESOURCE FAIR PROVIDING SERVICES FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES IS COMING TO LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES.

THE INAUGURAL STAND DOWN/HOMELESS VETERANS RESOURCES FAIR FOR LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED FOR NEXT MONTH. THE TWO-DAY EVENT WILL PROVIDE SERVICES TO VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES INCLUDING FOOD, SHELTER. CLOTHING, HEALTH SCREENINGS, VA AND SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS COUNSELING. REFERRALS TO OTHER SERVICES SUCH AS HEALTH CARE AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE IS ALSO PROVIDED. THE STAND DOWN WILL SERVE VETERANS, ACTIVE DUTY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES AND IS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 10 AND 11 AT THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 437 IN CLEARLAKE.
