PACIFIC HURRICANE WEAKENS AS IT NEARS CALIFORNIA (EVR) JB 8/29/14

A PACIFIC HURRICANE HEADED FOR THE WEST COAST IS WEAKENING AND WILL BRING LITTLE OR NO RAIN TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

HURRICANE MARIE WAS DOWNGRADED TO A TROPICAL STORM YESTERDAY MORNING AND IS EXPECTED TO BRING INCREASED WAVE HEIGHTS AND RIP CURRENTS TO THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST. THE STORM WONT LIKELY HAVE MUCH OF AN IMPACT ON THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE STATE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME INCREASED CLOUDS. MENDOCINO COUNTY MIGHT EXPERIENCE A LIGHT RAIN OR SPRINKLE FROM MID TO UPPER LEVEL MOISTURE FROM THE STORM.

PAUL DOLAN, MENDOCINO WINE SETTLE LAWSUIT (PI) JB 8/29/14

A SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED BETWEEN WINE ENTREPRENEUR PAUL DOLAN AND THE MENDOCINO WINE COMPANY.

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT REPORTED THAT WINE EXECUTIVE PAUL DOLAN AND HIS FORMER PARTNERS AT MENDOCINO WINE COMPANY HAVE AGREED TO DROP THEIR DUELING LAWSUITS AGAINST EACH OTHER, ENDING A MORE THAN TWO-YEAR BITTER LEGAL BATTLE. DOLAN AND THE MENDOCINO WINE COMPANY HAD FILED LAWSUITS AGAINST EACH OTHER FOLLOWING DOLANS FIRING AS PRESIDENT OF THE UKIAH WINERY IN JANUARY 2012. AS PART OF THE SETTLEMENT, BOTH PARTIES WILL DROP THEIR RESPECTIVE SUITS HOWEVER NO FINANCIAL AGREEMENT WAS REACHED BETWEEN THE PARTIES.

STATE SENATE PASSES NEW RULES FOR AIRSOFT GUNS (GOV) JB 8/29/14

THE STATE SENATE APPROVED A NEW BILL IN REGARDS TO THE LOOKS OF AIRSOFT GUNS.

LAST YEARS FATAL SHOOTING OF 13 YEAR OLD ANDY LOPEZ WHILE CARRYING A REALISTIC LOOKING AIRSOFT GUN PROMPTED LAWMAKERS TO APPROVE A BILL THURSDAY NIGHT REQUIRING BRIGHT MARKINGS ON CERTAIN AIR GUNS. SB199 WOULD APPLY TO REALISTIC LOOKING AIRSOFT GUNS AND WOULD REQUIRE THEM TO HAVE BRIGHTLY COLORED SURFACES OR PROMINENT FLUORESCENT STRIPS. ACCORDING TO PROPONENTS OF THE BILL, SEEING A BRIGHTLY COLORED GUN WOULD HELP OFFICERS MAKE A SPLIT SECOND DECISION ON WHETHER TO FIRE OR NOT.

BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPT PLANS MEASURE K MONEY (LAW) JB 8/29/14

THE BROOKTRAILS FIRE DEPARTMENT IS LAYING OUT PLANS FOR NEW EQUIPMENT TO BE PURCHASED WITH FUNDS FROM MEASURE K.

ALTHOUGH THE MONEY FROM TAX INITIATIVE, PASSED LAST NOVEMBER, WONT ARRIVE UNTIL THE BEGINNING OF NEXT YEAR, THE DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW AND UPGRADED GEAR. BREATHING APPARATUS AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING FOR FIREFIGHTERS ARE ON THE TOP OF THE LIST, AS WELL AS A TYPE VI RESCUE SQUAD VEHICLE, A SMALLER VEHICLE THAT OPERATES AS A QUICK ATTACK TO GET INTO SMALLER FIRES BEFORE THEY HAVE A CHANCE TO GROW. MUCH OF THE MONEY WILL BE USED TO REPLACE WORN OUT EQUIPMENT AND ENGINES USED BY THE DEPARTMENT.

SECOND FATAL ATV CRASH THIS WEEK (LAW) JB 8/29/14

A SECOND FATAL ATV CRASH IN THE COUNTY THIS WEEK CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A NORTH CAROLINA MAN.

THE SECOND CRASH OF AN ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE OCCURRED WHEN 35-YEAR-OLD TRAVIS EDWIN LEE WAS DRIVING ON CAHTO PEAK ROAD IN LAYTONVILLE. LEE WAS DRIVING A MODIFIED RACING YAMAHA BANSHEE ON A PRIVATE DRIVE ASPHALT DRIVEWAY WHEN HE ATTEMPTED A RIGHT HAND CURVE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, LOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND STRIKING A BOULDER. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO FRANK R. HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, BUT DIED FROM THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURIES. LEE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

CONCRETE AND MITIGATION WORK ON BYPASS CONTINUE (TR) JB 8/29/14

WORK CONTINUES ON MUCH OF THE WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT WITH THE FOCUS ON POURING A CONCRETE VIADUCT.

THE WILLITS NEWS REPORTED THAT THE HIGHWAY 101 WILLITS BYPASS PROJECT HAD ITS FIRST VIADUCT CONCRETE POUR, INVOLVING AROUND-THE-CLOCK OPERATIONS WITH 148 TRUCKS BRINGING IN MORE THAN 1,400 CUBIC YARDS OF CONCRETE. THE DESIGN OF THE VIADUCT REQUIRES CONCRETE FOR EACH SECTION TO BE POURED IN ONE CONTINUOUS OPERATION. CONCRETE WILL BE POURED FOR THE BRIDGE ABUTMENTS IN THE SOUTH, BUT MUCH OF THE FINAL CONCRETE WORK IN THE SOUTH HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED INTO 2015.

R.V. SCHOOL HELPS MAKE STUDENTS FEEL WELCOME (ED) JB 8/29/14

A NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM AT EAGLE PEAK MIDDLE SCHOOL IS DESIGNED TO MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR INCOMING FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS.

THE WEB PROGRAM, OR WHERE EVERYTHING BELONGS, IS A TRANSITION PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT WELCOMES STUDENTS AND MAKES THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE THROUGHOUT THEIR FIRST YEAR OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. THE PROGRAM HAS SHOWN SUCCESS IN REDUCING BULLYING AND DISCIPLINE ISSUES, AS WELL AS INCREASING STUDENT SAFETY AND CONNECTION TO THE SCHOOL AS A WHOLE. NEW STUDENTS ARE MENTORED BY SELECT EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THEIR ENTIRE FIRST YEAR, ACTING AS POSITIVE ROLE MODELS AND MOTIVATORS FOR THEIR YOUNGER COUNTERPARTS.

CHRISTIAN LUIZ RUNS FOR UKIAH CITY COUNCIL SEAT (GOV) JB 8/29/14

UKIAH RESIDENT CHRISTIAN LUIZ IS HOPING TO MAKE DIFFERENCE FOR THE CITY AS HE JOINS THE RACE FOR A SEAT ON THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL.

50 YEAR OLD CHRISTIAN LUIZ, AN VETERAN OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE, MOVED TO UKIAH IN 1987 AND REMEMBERS WHEN UKIAH WAS NAMED THE BEST SMALL TOWN IN CALIFORNIA IN 1993. LUIZ WORKS AS THE NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE NORTHERN CIRCLE INDIAN HOUSING AUTHORITY AND WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON CREATING AFFORDABLE HOUSING, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND ECO-FRIENDLY JOBS IN THE CITY. HE STATES THAT HE WANTS TO HEAR WHAT THE PUBLIC HAS TO SAY AND WHAT THEY WANT AND, IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY, HE WONT LET THEM DOWN.
