CLEARLAKE WOMAN DIES IN EARLY SATURDAY WRECK (LAW) JB 9/1/14

A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR NICE CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A CLEARLAKE WOMAN.

CHP REPORTS STATE THAT THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 3:38 AM SATURDAY MORNING ON HIGHWAY 20 EAST OF BARTLETT SPRINGS ROAD. THE 46 YEAR OLD DRIVER, WHOS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET, WAS DRIVING HER 1993 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA WESTBOUND WHEN SHE VEERED OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH, CRASHING INTO AN EMBANKMENT. CHP INDICATED THAT THE WOMAN WAS NOT WEARING HER SEATBELT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT AND SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

THE RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF UKIAH ARE DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS.

THE CUTBACK ON WATER USAGE BY UKIAH CITY RESIDENTS IS BEING HAILED AS VERY RESPONSIBLE AND IMPRESSIVE BY CITY OFFICIALS. ON AVERAGE, THE CITY IS USING OVER 2 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER PER DAY LESS THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS, WITH ONLY ONE MILLION GALLONS BEING TAKEN FROM THE RIVER INSTEAD OF 4 MILLION DURING A NORMAL SUMMER. THE CITY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR NOTED THAT THE SIGNIFICANT THING ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY IS THAT THEYRE DOING THIS WITHOUT ANYBODY ASKING THEM TO.

CALIFORNIA BAG BAN HEADS TO SENATE (GOV/EVR) JB 9/1/14

A NEW SENATE BILL BANNING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS IN THE STATE WAS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY AND NOW HEADS FOR THE SENATE.

IF SB720 PASSES THROUGH THE SENATE, CALIFORNIA WOULD BE THE FIRST STATE IN THE NATION TO ENACT SUCH LEGISLATION. STORES AROUND THE STATE WHO UTILIZE THE SINGLE-USE BAGS WOULD HAVE UNTIL SOMETIME IN 2015 BEFORE THE BAN WOULD TAKE EFFECT. SEVERAL COUNTIES AROUND THE STATE, INCLUDING MENDOCINO COUNTY, CURRENTLY HAVE BAG RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE ALREADY.

BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED IN STOLEN CAR (LAW) JB 9/1/14

A SAN FRANCISCO WOMAN WAS ARRESTED LAST WEEK WHILE ALLEGEDLY DRIVING A STOLEN CAR FULL OF BURGLARY TOOLS, STOLEN LAPTOPS AND MARIJUANA.

ACCORDING TO UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORTS, AN OFFICER SPOTTED A 1998 GOLD TOYOTA COROLLA THAT HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN TWO DAYS EARLIER DRIVING ON EAST PERKINS ROAD. THE OFFICER PERFORMED A HIGH-RISK STOP OF THE VEHICLE ON PLUM DRIVE AND IDENTIFIED THE DRIVER, 38-YEAR-OLD DONESHA HATTER, AS HAVING TWO FELONY WARRANTS FOR HER ARREST. A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE UNCOVERED BURGLARY TOOLS AND STOLEN LAPTOPS, TOOL BOXES, AND CELL PHONES. A POUND OF MARIJUANA WAS ALSO DISCOVERED IN THE SEARCH.

WILLITS MAYOR SEEKS COUNTY 3RD DISTRICT SUPER SPOT (GOV) JB 9/1/14

WILLITS MAYOR HOLLY MADRIGAL BELIEVES SHES READY TO TAKE THE OPEN SEAT FOR MENDOCINO COUNTY 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE NOVEMBER ELECTION WILL FEATURE A SHOWDOWN BETWEEN MADRIGAL AN OPPONENT TOM WOODHOUSE, AS BOTH BATTLE FOR THE POSITION BEING LEFT BY RETIRING SUPERVISOR JOHN PINCHES. MADRIGAL CITES HER EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE WILLITS CITY GOVERNMENT, WERE SHE HAS BEEN ON THE CITY COUNCIL, AND THE FACT THAT SHE IS ON HER THIRD TERM AS MAYOR AS ENOUGH BACKGROUND TO LAND THE JOB. THE 37 YEAR OLD FEELS ISSUES RELATING TO WATER, RECOGNIZING THE RURAL PART OF THE COMMUNITY, MARIJUANA AND THE COUNTY BUDGET WILL BE THE BIGGEST ITEMS FACING THE INCOMING 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR.

UKIAH MAN ARRESTED IN HUMBOLDT POT BUST (LAW) JB 9/1/14

A HUGE MARIJUANA BUST IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY RESULTED IN THE ARREST OF A UKIAH MAN.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY DEPUTIES, ALONG WITH CAMP AGENTS, SERVED TWO SUPERIOR COURT SEARCH WARRANTS IN THE BLOCKSBERG AREA OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY. THREE SUSPECTS WEE DETAINED AT THE GROW SITE, INCLUDING UKRAINIAN NATIONALS AND 47 YEAR OLD STEVEN ERIC ANDERSON OF UKIAH. 4,412 MARIJUANA PLANTS WERE ERADICATED FROM THE SITE. CALIFORNIA FISH AND WILDLIFE AGENTS WERE CONTACTED REGARDING THE EXTENSIVE AMOUNT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE AT THE SITE, INCLUDING TIMBER CONVERSION, ILLEGAL ROADS, AND CHEMICALS FOUND AT THE SITE.

STATE REPORT RELEASED ON RISKS OF FRACKING (EVR) JB 9/1/14

A NEW STATE REPORT ON THE RISKS OF FRACKING WITHIN CALIFORNIA WAS RELEASED LAST WEEK.

THE CALIFORNIA COUNCIL ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RELEASED A FEDERALLY COMMISSIONED REPORT DETAILING THE RISKS OF THE CONTROVERSIAL OIL DRILLING METHOD. A CONCLUSION WAS MADE IN THE 400 PAGE REPORT THAT WATER QUALITY COULD POTENTIALLY BE AFFECTED DUE TO THE SHALLOW DEPTHS OF THE DRILLING PROJECTS. THE REPORT STATED THE POTENTIAL FOR HYDRAULIC FRACTURES TO INTERCEPT GROUNDWATER WARRANTS MORE INVESTIGATION AND MONITORING. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVED A FRACKING ORDINANCE FOR THE NOVEMBER BALLOT THAT WOULD BAN THE PROCESS WITHIN THE COUNTY.

THE FIGHT AGAINST INVASIVE QUAGGA MUSSELS IS COMING SOON TO LAKE SONOMA AND LAKE MENDOCINO.

A GROUP OF GOVERNMENT AGENCIES WITH A STAKE IN THE HEATH OF LAKE SONOMA AND LAKE MENDOCINO ARE PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON A NEW MANDATORY BOAT INSPECTION STRATEGY. OFFICIALS SAY THAT THE NEW PLAN SHOULD BE UP AND RUNNING BY NEXT SPRING AND WILL REQUIRE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND PATIENCE ON THE PART OF RECREATIONAL BOATERS. AT LEAST AT THE START, ITS LIKELY TO RESULT IN NARROWER DAYTIME LAUNCH WINDOWS, PROHIBITIONS ON LIVE BAIT KEPT IN WATER, AND WAIT TIMES DURING PEAK HOURS.
