FEDERAL LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST LAKE COUNTY COPS (LAW) JB 9/3/14

A FEDERAL LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN LAKE COUNTY IN VIOLATION OF MEASURE N.

THE LAWSUIT WAS FILED FRIDAY IN THE U.S. DISTRICT COURT IN SAN JOSE AND ALLEGES THAT RESIDENTS IN LAKE COUNTY WERE SUBJECT TO WARRANTLESS SEARCHES AND UNLAWFUL ABATEMENT PROCEDURES BY THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE. THE SUIT REPORTEDLY IS ASKING FOR A TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER, TEMPORARY INJUNCTION AND A PERMANENT INJUNCTION AGAINST SEARCHES WITHOUT WARRANTS. THE LAWSUIT DOES NOT CHALLENGE THE LEGALITY OF MEASURE N. RATHER, IT CLAIMS THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE MEASURE HAS BEEN CONDUCTED BY AUTHORITIES IN AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL WAY.

LAKE/MENDO AIR QUALITY AFFECTED BY NORTHERN FIRE (EVR) JB 9/3/14

INCREASED SMOKE IN THE AIR AROUND LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTY IS BEING CAUSED BY YET ANOTHER MASSIVE WILDFIRE IN CALIFORNIA.

THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER FOR THE MENDOCINO COUNTY AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT STATED THAT THE HIGH LEVEL OF SMOKE IN THE AIR IS DUE TO THE HAPPY CAMP FIRE BURNING IN THE KLAMATH NATIONAL FOREST. SMOKE FROM THE FIRE HAS BLANKETED MUCH OF LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES AS WELL AS THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY. THE MASSIVE BLAZE HAS BURNED A TOTAL OF 66,335 ACRES AND IS ONLY 15 PERCENT CONTAINED.

HAY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR HORSES IN THE COUNTY (PI) JB 9/3/14

A NEW HAY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM IS BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO COUNTY HORSE OWNERS AFFECTED BY THE CURRENT DROUGHT.

SAFER NORTH COUNTIES HORSE RESCUE, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO FINDING HOMES FOR DISPLACED HORSES AND EDUCATING THE PUBLIC CONCERNING HORSE WELFARE, MANAGES A HAY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM IN LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES. THE DROUGHT HAS LEFT PASTURES BARE AND THE COST OF HAY CONTINUES TO CLIMB. THE PROGRAM OFFERS TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE TO HORSE OWNERS WHO FIND THEMSELVES IN A FINANCIAL CRISIS, UNABLE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE FEED FOR THEIR HORSES. CHILI COOK-OFF BENEFIT READY FOR THIS FRIDAY (PI) JB 9/3/14

THE ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF BENEFITING THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF UKIAH IS SET FOR THIS FRIDAY AND IS SHAPING UP TO BE THE BIGGEST YET.

GRANITE CONSTRUCTIONS 16TH ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF, SCHEDULED FOR THIS FRIDAY, HAS RECEIVED NEARLY TWICE AS MANY ENTRIES THIS YEAR. PROCEEDS FROM THE POPULAR EVENT GO TO SUPPORT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF UKIAH AND HAS RAISED OVER $200,000 FOR THE GROUP TO DATE. THE CLUB IS HOPING THE EVENT THIS YEAR WILL GENERATE BETWEEN $10,000 TO $20,000. JUDGES THIS YEAR INCLUDES SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN AND PLANNING COMMISSIONER KEVIN DOBLE. THE COMPETITION STARTS AT 6 PM THIS FRIDAY AT ALEX THOMAS PLAZA.

CLEARLAKE CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED BY AUTHORITIES (LAW) JB 9/3/14

THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS RELEASED THE IDENTITY OF A CLEARLAKE WOMAN WHO WAS KILLED IN A SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT OVER THE WEEKEND.

ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFFS OFFICE, 46-YEAR-OLD PATRICIA ANN MOORE WAS THE VICTIM OF THE FATAL CRASH. MOORE HAS DRIVING WESTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20 EAST OF BARTLETT SPRINGS ROAD WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. HER VEHICLE WENT OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A DITCH, COLLIDING WITH AN EMBANKMENT. CHP REPORTS FROM THE ACCIDENT STATE THAT MOORE WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AND WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

LUCERNE WATER RATES SPIKE AGAIN (ECN) JB 9/3/14

AFTER NEARLY TWO YEARS OF REVIEW BY STATE OFFICIALS, NEW WATER RATE INCREASES TOOK EFFECT IN LUCERNE LAST WEEK.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT THE RATE INCREASES FACED OPPOSITION FROM RESIDENTS OF LUCERNE AND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, WHO BELIEVE RESIDENTS WERE ALREADY STRUGGLING WITH HIGH WATER RATES BEFORE THE SPIKE. A NEWS RELEASE FROM THE CALIFORNIA WATER SERVICE COMPANY DETAILED THE CHANGES TO THE WATER RATES, SHOWING THAT A TYPICAL RESIDENT CUSTOMER CAN EXPECT TO SEE AN INCREASE OF OVER 10 PERCENT IN THEIR WATER RATES. RATES WILL ALSO INCREASE BY UNSPECIFIED AMOUNTS IN 2015 AND 2016 WITH SMALLER, INFLATIONARY-TYPE INCREASES.

CLEARLAKE TO GET 31 NEW STREETLIGHTS FREE OF CHARGE (PI) JB 9/3/14

THE CITY OF CLEARLAKE WILL BE GETTING 31 NEW STREETLIGHTS FREE OF CHARGE.

31 STREETLIGHTS LINING LAKESHORE BETWEEN OLYMPIC DRIVE AND OLD HIGHWAY 53 ARE SET TO REPLACED WITH NEW, HIGHER OUTPUT ONES AT NO COST TO THE CITY. THE CURRENT STREETLIGHTS ARE OWNED BY PG&E, AND THEY WILL BE REPLACING THE EXISTING WOODEN LIGHT POLES WITH MODERN ONES TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF THE POLES ROTTING. THE NEW LIGHTS WILL ALSO FEATURE EASIER GRAFFITI REMOVAL AND NON-YELLOWING GLASS FIXTURES.

NONPROFIT GROUPS RAISE FUNDS WITH HUNTING TAGS (ECN) JB 9/3/14

NONPROFIT GROUPS ACROSS THE STATE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP WILDLIFE WHILE RAISING MONEY FOR THEIR ORGANIZATIONS.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE INVITES NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP WILDLIFE BY AUCTIONING BIG GAME HUNTING LICENSE TAGS FOR THE 2015-16 SEASON. THERE WILL BE 12 OR 13 OF THESE SPECIAL FUNDRAISING TAGS AVAILABLE FOR NONPROFIT GROUPS TO SELL. THE POSSIBILITY OF WINNING SUCH A RARE PRIZE ATTRACTS BIDDERS TO THE GROUPS FUNDRAISING EVENTS, WHICH HELPS THEM RAISE MONEY FOR THEIR ORGANIZATIONS. IN LAST YEARS AUCTIONS, MORE THAN $338,000 WAS RAISED FOR THE RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT OF SEVERAL WILDLIFE SPECIES IN CALIFORNIA.
