PHONE SCAM INVOLVING UKIAH UTILITY SERVICES (LAW) JB 10/2/14

UKIAH POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A NEW PHONE SCAM INVOLVING CITY OF UKIAH UTILITY SERVICES.

THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A REPORT THAT PHONE SCAMMERS CALLED A LOCAL BUSINESS CLAIMING TO BE THE CITY OF UKIAH UTILITY BILLING DEPARTMENT. THE CALLER TOLD THE BUSINESS THAT THEIR UTILITY BILL IS OVERDUE AND THEIR ELECTRICITY WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISCONNECTED IF THEY DIDNT PAY THEY OUTSTANDING BALANCE USING A CREDIT CARD OVER THE PHONE. POLICE WARN RESIDENTS NEVER TO MAKE ANY PAYMENTS OR GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THE CITY OF UKIAH OVER THE PHONE WITHOUT FIRST VERIFYING YOUR BILLING STATUS.

BOIL WATER NOTICE FOR 30 HOMES IN LAKEPORT (PI) JB 10/2/14

A WATER MAIN BREAK LED TO THE ISSUANCE OF A BOIL WATER NOTICE FOR SEVERAL HOMES IN LAKEPORT.

THE LAKEPORT PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ISSUED THE BOIL WATER NOTICE TO 30 HOMES ON THIRD AND FOURTH STREET ON TUESDAY. CREWS WERE INVESTIGATING THE BREAK IN THE MAIN AND HAD TO DEPRESSURIZE THE SYSTEM TO REPAIR A VALVE AND FITTING. AS A RESULT, THE RESIDENTS WHO RECEIVED THE NOTICES WERE BEING URGED TO BOIL ALL TAP WATER USED FOR DRINKING OR COOKING AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION AGAINST STOMACH OR INTESTINAL ILLNESS. WATER QUALITY TEST RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TODAY AND THE ORDER WILL BE LIFTED IF THE RESULTS COME BACK CLEAR.

THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $63,232 FOR LC HOUSING (GOV) JB 10/2/14

THE LAKE COUNTY HOUSING COMMISSION HAS BEEN AWARDED A SERIES OF GRANTS TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO THE COUNTY.

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE MIKE THOMPSON ANNOUNCED THAT MORE THAN $63,000 IN U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT GRANTS HAS BEEN AWARDED TO THE LAKE COUNTY HOUSING COMMISSION. THE FUNDS COME FROM HUDS FAMILY SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM AND ALLOW PUBLIC HOUSING AGENCIES TO WORK WITH SOCIAL SERVICE GROUPS, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND BUSINESSES TO HELP PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS. THEIR WORK INCLUDES HELPING RESIDENTS INCREASE THEIR EDUCATION OR GAIN MARKETABLE SKILLS THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT OR ADVANCE IN THEIR CURRENT WORK.

SUP JOHN PINCHES BACKS LOSAK SALARY INCREASE (GOV) JB 10/2/14

MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERVISOR JOHN PINCHES HAS AGREED WITH THE PROPOSED SALARY INCREASE FOR COUNTY ATTORNEY DOUG LOSAK.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT MENDOCINO COUNTY 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR AND CHAIRMAN JOHN PINCHES HAS BACKED THE BOARDS RECOMMENDATION TO INCREASE THE SALARY OF COUNTY ATTORNEY DOUG LOSAK. IF THE RECOMMENDATION IS UPHELD, LOSAKS SALARY WOULD INCREASE FROM $107,390 PER YEAR TO $143,291 ANNUALLY AND HIS TITLE WOULD CHANGE FROM ACTING COUNTY COUNSEL TO INTERIM COUNTY COUNSEL. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETS NEXT ON OCTOBER 7, WITH THE DECISION OF LOSAKS SALARY BEING PLACED ON THE CONSENT CALENDER.

EARLY MORNING FIRE DESTROYS KELSEYVILLE HOME (LAW) JB 10/2/14

A FIRE EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING DESTROYED A HOME NEAR KELSEYVILLE.

THE FIRE WAS FIRST REPORTED JUST BEFORE 1:00 AM YESTERDAY MORNING AT THE BAYVIEW TERRACE MOBILE HOME PARK ON SODA BAY ROAD. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, THE DOUBLEWIDE MANUFACTURED HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AS ALL 5 OF THE HOMES OCCUPANTS, INCLUDING AND INFANT, WERE ABLE TO GET OUT SAFELY. THE HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS AND THE RED CROSS RESPONDED TO ASSIST WITH FINDING TEMPORARY HOUSING FOR THE HOMES OCCUPANTS.

FT BRAGG MAN SHOOTS WOMAN WITH BB GUN (LAW) JB 10/2/14

A FORT BRAGG MAN WAS ARRESTED TUESDAY AFTER ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING A WOMAN WITH A BB GUN.

FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON NORTH LINCOLN STREET ON SUNDAY TO A REPORT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. WHEN OFFICERS ARRIVED, THEY FOUND A WOMAN SITTING ON THE SIDEWALK AND THE SUSPECT, IDENTIFIED AS 46 YEAR OLD JEFFREY KOSTICK, PACING BEHIND HER. OFFICERS LEARNED THAT KOSTICK HAD SHOT THE WOMAN IN THE BUTTOCKS WITH A BB GUN. KOSTICK, WHO HAD AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT, WAS ARRESTED ON SEVERAL CHARGES INCLUDING SUSPICION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND DISCHARGING A WEAPON IN A GROSSLY NEGLIGENT MANNER.

MCOE RECEIVES TWO GRANTS FOR TRAINING (ED) JB 10/2/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION HAS BEEN AWARDED TWO GRANTS TOTALING $1.7 MILLION FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND TRAINING.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT A TWO-YEAR PROJECT AWARE GRANT CLOSE TO $100,000 WAS PRESENTED TO THE MCOE FROM THE FEDERAL SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION. THE SECOND, A $1.6 MILLION SCHOOL CLIMATE TRANSFORMATION GRANT, WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE SAFE AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES NATIONAL PROGRAMS, AND WILL BE DISTRIBUTED OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD. THE GRANTS WILL BE USED TO PROVIDE TRAINING IN MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND TO STRENGTHEN THE MENTAL WELLNESS FRAMEWORK IN SCHOOLS.

KIOSKS REPLACING LUCERNE VISITOR CENTER (GOV/ECN) JB 10/2/14

THE LUCERNE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER IS BEING REPLACED WITH INFORMATIONAL KIOSKS IN LAKE COUNTY.

AFTER BEING IN OPERATION FOR 11 YEARS, THE LUCERNE VISITOR INFORMATION IS PREPARING TO CLOSE AS INTERACTIVE VISITOR KIOSKS ARE BEING INTRODUCED TO VARIOUS PUBLIC LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTY. THE COUNTYS TOURISM ADVISORY BOARD DETERMINED THAT 8.5 PERCENT OF THE COUNTYS MARKETING BUDGET SHOULD BE SPENT ON VISITOR SERVICES. HOWEVER, THE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER HAS AN ANNUAL COST OF JUST UNDER $175,000, 46.5 PERCENT OF THE MARKETING BUDGET. THE NEW INFORMATION KIOSKS WILL BE LOCATED AT BUSINESSES AND LIBRARIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.
