CAL FIRE AIRTANKER CRASHES IN YOSEMITE (LAW) JB 10/8/14

A CAL FIRE AIRTANKER ASSISTING WITH THE DOG ROCK FIRE HAS CRASHED NEAR YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK.

CAL FIRE AND PARK OFFICIALS CONFIRMED THAT AN S-2T AIRTANKER CRASHED NEAR THE 130 ACRE FIRE AT APPROXIMATELY 4:30 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WITHIN A MILE FROM THE PARKS WEST ENTRANCE. RESCUE CREWS WERE WORKING THEIR WAY THROUGH DIFFICULT TERRAIN TO REACH THE DOWNED PLANE AND THE CONDITION OF THE PILOT HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. IT WAS UNCLEAR IF THE PILOT WAS FLYING TO OR FROM THE FIRE OR WAS IN THE PROCESS OF DROPPING FIRE RETARDANT.

CITY OF UKIAH PROJECT INSPECTIONS QUESTIONED (GOV) JB 10/8/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL REVIEW CITY PROJECT INSPECTION PROCEDURES AFTER QUESTIONS WERE RAISED.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE COUNCIL WILL LOOK INTO CERTAIN CITY PROCEDURES AFTER CONCERNS WERE BROUGHT UP RECENTLY ABOUT HOW A WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT WAS HANDLED. AT THE COUNCILS LAST MEETING ON OCTOBER 1, COUNCIL MEMBER DOUG CRANE SAID SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD EXPRESSED CONCERNS ABOUT HOW THE PROJECT TO REPLACE THE WATER MAIN AT CALVERT DRIVE AND WILLOW AVENUE HAD BEEN COMPLETED. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE WERE DIFFERENCES IN THE WORK IN PLACE AND THE PLAN DRAWINGS, THE COUNCIL VOTED 4-0 TO DECLARE THE PROJECT COMPLETE.

KONOCTI UNIFIED BOARD MAY MOVE 8TH GRADERS (ED) JB 10/8/14

THE KONOCTI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT IS HOLDING A WORKSHOP TO LOOK HOW TO HANDLE THEIR LACK OF AVAILABLE CLASSROOMS.

FACED WITH A CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF CLASSROOM SPACE, THE KONOCTI UNIFIED BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL MEET THIS WEEK TO DISCUSS BEST WAY TO UTILIZE SCHOOL FACILITIES. ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION BEING DISCUSSED AT THE WORKSHOP IS TO MOVE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS TO THE LOWER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS STARTING NEXT YEAR. THE WORKSHOP, PLANNED FOR TODAY AT 4:30, IS FOR DISCUSSION ONLY WITH NO ACTION TAKING PLACE. ANY PROGRAM OR FINANCING CHANGES THE BOARD AGREES TO PURSUE WOULD BE PLACED ON A FUTURE AGENDA.

UKIAH, OTHER CITIES DOING WELL IN SAVING WATER (EVR) JB 108/14

UKIAH RESIDENTS, ALONG WITH THE REST OF CALIFORNIA, ARE EXCELLING IN THEIR WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS.

THE CITY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR REPORTED THAT, AS OF LAST WEEK, UKIAH RESIDENTS WERE USING 1.9 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER A DAY. HE STATED THAT THE CURRENT WATER USE DURING THIS EXTENDED DROUGHT IS EVEN LESS THAN THE CITYS NORMAL WINTER USE. THE RECENT RAINS HELPED THE WATER LEVEL IN LAKE MENDOCINO SPIKE UP A BIT BUT, AS OF MONDAY, THE LAKE LEVEL WAS REPORTED AT JUST UNDER 30,000 ACRE FEET. THE STATE WATER BOARD STATED THAT EVERY GALLON SAVED TODAY POSTPONES THE NEED FOR MORE DRASTIC, DIFFICULT AND EXPENSIVE ACTION SHOULD THE DROUGHT CONTINUE INTO NEXT YEAR.

THREE NEW PROJECTS BEFORE DESIGN REVIEW BOARD (GOV) JB 10/8/14

AT LEAST THREE NEW PROJECTS WILL BE REVIEWED BY UKIAHS DESIGN REVIEW BOARD THIS WEEK.

ACCORDING TO THE AGENDA FOR THE BOARDS MEETING ON THURSDAY, THREE NEW ITEMS OF BUSINESS WILL BE CONSIDERED INCLUDING A MIXED USE PROJECT ON SOUTH ORCHARD AVENUE AND A RENOVATION PROJECT OF THE BURGER KING RESTAURANT ON EAST PERKINS STREET. THE THIRD ITEM WILL BE A SITE DEVELOPMENT PERMIT FOR A RACEWAY FOR RADIO CONTROLLED CARS AT THE REAR OF THE PARCEL AT 1147 NORTH STATE STREET, WHICH IS THE UKIAH SMOKE SHOP. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULE FOR THURSDAY AT 3 PM AT THE UKIAH CIVIC CENTER.

LEDAC TO HEAR DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT PLANS (GOV) JB 10/8/14

THE LAKEPORT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE WILL DISCUSS IMPROVEMENTS TO THE DOWNTOWN AREA THIS WEEK.

AT A MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY, LAKEPORTS CURRENT SPECIAL PROJECTS COORDINATOR WILL PRESENT AN UPDATE ON PHASE TWO OF THE LAKEPORT DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. THE PLAN, AS IT IS CURRENTLY LAID OUT, WILL INCLUDE RELOCATING STREETLIGHTS AND WIDENING SIDEWALKS, INSTALLING NEW GRATES AND TREES, AND THE RECONSTRUCTION AND REPAVING OF MAIN STREET INCLUDING THE INSTALLATION OF SOME STREET FURNITURE. THE LAKEPORT CITY COUNCIL IS SET TO CONSIDER AN AGREEMENT FOR ENGINEERING SERVICES AND CONSTRUCTION PLANS TO MOVE PHASE TWO FORWARD.

EARTHQUAKE IN COVELO MONDAY NIGHT (EVR) JB 10/8/14

SEVERAL EARTHQUAKES WERE REPORTED AROUND THE AREA IN THE PAST FEW DAYS.

ACCORDING TO THE US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, A 3.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE WAS REPORTED NEAR COVELO MONDAY EVENING. THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 9:03 PM AND WAS CENTERED 24 MILES NORTH OF COVELO AT A DEPTH OF 22.9 MILES. MONDAYS QUAKE FOLLOWS THE 3.9 MAGNITUDE TREMOR THAT OCCURRED AT 8:45 AM ON SATURDAY 9 MILES SOUTHWEST OF WILLITS AT A DEPTH OF ONLY 2.4 MILES.

CAL FIRE IS JOINING FORCES WITH FIREFIGHTERS AND SAFETY ADVOCATES NATIONWIDE DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK TO REMIND CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING WORKING SMOKE ALARMS IN THE HOME AND TESTING THEM MONTHLY. ACCORDING TO THE LATEST NATIONAL RESEARCH, WORKING SMOKE ALARMS CUT THE CHANCE OF DYING IN A FIRE IN HALF.
