DOOR TO DOOR SCAMMER IN UKIAH (LAW) JB 10/13/14

UKIAH RESIDENTS SHOULD BE AWARE OF A SCAMMER GOING DOOR TO DOOR CLAIMING TO BE WITH THE CITY OF UKIAH.

CITY OF UKIAH ELECTRIC CUSTOMER HAS REPORTED THAT A YOUNG MAN CLAIMING TO BE WITH THE CITY OF UKIAH WAS KNOCKING ON DOORS AND OFFERING ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTS BULBS. HE WANTED TO COME INSIDE TO COUNT HOW MANY BULBS THE RESIDENT NEEDED AND SAID HE WOULD RETURN WITH THE FREE BULBS. THE MAN WAS NOT WEARING ANY IDENTIFICATION OR A CITY OF UKIAH UNIFORM. THE CITY IS NOT CONTACTING CUSTOMERS DOOR TO DOOR AND RESIDENTS SHOULD BE SUSPICIOUS OF THIS TYPE OF ACTIVITY AND CONTACT THE POLICE AT 463-6262 IF CONTACTED BY SUCH A PERSON.

WILLITS MAN SENT TO STATE PRISON FOR EXPLOSION (LAW) JB 10/13/14

A WILLITS MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON FOR CAUSING AN EXPLOSION EARLIER THIS YEAR.

39-YEAR DAVID MADRIGAL WAS SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS IN STATE PRISON FOR CAUSING A DRUG-RELATED EXPLOSION IN MARCH THAT COMPLETELY DESTROYED A HOLLY STREET RENTAL PROPERTY. HE WAS CONVICTED OF FELONIOUSLY AND RECKLESSLY CAUSING A FIRE OF A STRUCTURE WHEN HIS HONEY OIL LAB EXPLODED, COMPLETELY ENGULFING THE HOME IN FLAMES. MADRIGAL ADMITTED TO OPERATING THE LAB JUST BEFORE THE EXPLOSION AT THE SAME RESIDENCE WHERE HE AND HIS FAMILY LIVED, AND THAT HE WAS SELLING THE FINISHED DRUG TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

ALLEGATIONS OF POLICE MISCONDUCT DURING RAIDS (LAW) JB 10/13/14

ALLEGATIONS OF POLICE MISCONDUCT IN LOCAL MARIJUANA RAIDS HAS SPARKED LEGAL ACTION.

AN ATTORNEY REPRESENTING A GROUP OF LOCAL MARIJUANA GROWERS HAS FILED A REQUEST FOR PUBLIC RECORDS WITH THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE. THE GROUP IS SEEKING DOCUMENTS RELATING TO RAIDS CONDUCTED BY THE COUNTY OF MENDOCINO MARIJUANA ERADICATION TASKFORCE AND THE MENDOCINO MAJOR CRIMES TASK FORCE, CLAIMING THAT SEVERAL OF THE RAIDS WERE ABUSIVE OR ILLEGAL. THE REQUEST FOR DOCUMENTS STATES THAT MENDOCINO COUNTY RESIDENTS HAVE COMPLAINED THAT THE MCSO, COMMET AND THE MAJOR CRIMES TASK FORCE HAVE CONDUCTED ILLEGAL RAIDS ON MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENTS.

MENDO NURSING CLASS ALL PASS BOARDS ON 1ST TRY (ED) JB 10/13/14

THE ENTIRE MENDOCINO COLLEGE NURSING CLASS PASSED THE STATE LICENSING EXAM ON THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT.

18 STUDENTS WHO HAD RECENTLY COMPLETED THE NURSING PROGRAM AND MENDOCINO COLLEGE SUCCESSFULLY PASSED THE NATIONAL COUNCIL LICENSURE EXAMINATION ON THEIR FIRST TRY. MENDOCINO COLLEGE HAS BEEN ABLE TO BOAST A STATE BOARD EXAMINATION PASS RATE OF 96 PERCENT IN THE PAST, WELL ABOVE THE STATEWIDE AVERAGE OF 86 PERCENT. THE NCLEX-RN EXAMINATION MEASURES THE COMPETENCIES NEEDED TO PERFORM SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY AS AN ENTRY-LEVEL NURSE AND MUST BE PASSED BEFORE A NURSE RECEIVES THEIR LICENSING.

SIX-FIGURE JUDGMENT AGAINST TRESPASS GROWER (LAW) JB 10/13/14

A MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE HAS IMPOSED A SIX FIGURE DAMAGES AWARD AGAINST A MAN WHO TRESPASSED ON HIS NEIGHBORS PROPERTY TO GROW MARIJUANA.

JUDGE JEANINE NADEL ISSUED A DECISION ON OCTOBER 6 AWARDING PLAINTIFFS MARIA AND ERNESTO SALAZAR OF COVELO A TOTAL OF $242,000 IN DAMAGES AGAINST DEFENDANT ROSS MATEJCEK. THE SALAZARS SUED MATEJCEK FOR TRESPASSING ON THEIR PROPERTY, TAKING LAND, WATER, AND TREES TO FACILITATE HIS MARIJUANA GROW. THE COURT FOUND THAT MATECJEK HAD CONSTRUCTED A ROAD AND REMOVED 225 TREES ON THE SALAZARS PROPERTY AND THAT HE WAS STEALING WATER FROM THEM TO FILL LARGE TANKS ON HIS GROW SITE.

NEW CALIFORNIA LAW HELPS INSURE MORE DRIVERS (GOV) JB 10/13/14

A NEW LAW WILL HELP MORE LOW-INCOME CALIFORNIANS PURCHASE AFFORDABLE AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE.

SENATE BILL 1273, SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOVERNOR BROWN LAST MONTH, EXPANDS AND ENHANCES CALIFORNIAS LOW-COST AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE PROGRAM TO INCLUDE NON-CITIZEN INDIVIDUALS. THE NEW LAW MAKES NECESSARY REFORMS AND ENHANCEMENTS TO THE CLCA TO ENSURE THAT ALL OF CALIFORNIAS LOW-INCOME DRIVERS HAVE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE AUTO INSURANCE OPTIONS. THE SIGNING OF THE BILL NOW ALLOWS A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A LOW-COST INSURANCE OPTION THAT WOULD BE OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE.

AUTOPSY CONDUCTED ON DEAD COUNTY JAIL INMATE (LAW) JB 10/13/14

AN AUTOPSY WAS COMPLETED ON FRIDAY OF AN INMATE WHO DIED OF A SUSPECTED SUICIDE LAST WEEK AT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

36-YEAR-OLD SHANE MURPHY WAS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS ON THE FLOOR OF HIS CELL LAST WEDNESDAY. INMATES AND JAIL STAFF WERE UNSUCCESSFUL IN THEIR ATTEMPTS TO REVIVE MURPHY AND MEDICAL STAFF AT THE JAIL PRONOUNCED HIM DEAD AT THE SCENE. THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF MURPHYS DEATH IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME, PENDING THE RESULTS OF A TOXICOLOGY ANALYSIS THAT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE 4-6 WEEKS.

ROAD WORK PROJECT THIS WEEK IN UKIAH (TR) JB 10/13/14

THERE IS AN ONGOING ROAD WORK PROJECT IN UKIAH THIS WEEK THAT DRIVERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF.

SIERRA NEVADA CONSTRUCTION WILL BE PLACING SLURRY SEAL ON SEVERAL ROADS IN UKIAH FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS. NO CARS WILL BE PERMITTED ON THE ROADS BEING TREATED DURING WORK HOURS OF 7AM TO 6PM. ROADS BEING TREATED TODAY ARE DONNER LANE FROM INCLINE DRIVE TO HOMEWOOD, WIYATT DRIVE FROM POMO TO WASHO DRIVE, SOUTH BARNES STREET FROM BETTY ST TO CLAY, BETTY ST FROM MCPEAK TO OAK PARK, AND ALBRIGHT PLACE FROM OBSERVATORY TO THE END OF THE COURT
