TWO YEAR OLD BOY FOUND WALKING ALONE IN UKIAH (LAW) JB 10/14/14

A TWO-YEAR OLD BOY WAS FOUND LAST WEEK WALKING ALONE ON A UKIAH STREET.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO AN AREA OF JEFFERSON STREET NEAR THE GRACE HUDSON SCHOOL LAST THURSDAY TO A REPORT OF A YOUNG CHILD WANDERING THE STREETS. WORKING WITH MENDOCINO COUNTY CHILDRENS SERVICES, DEPUTIES WERE ABLE TO LOCATE THE CHILDS HOME ON ADAMS LANE. THE CHILDS FATHER, 24 YEAR OLD ARMANDO ALVAREZ, HAD FALLEN ASLEEP WHEN THE CHILD DISAPPEARED FROM THE HOME. ALVAREZ WAS ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF FELONY CHILD ENDANGERMENT AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

ABALONE DIVER DIES OFF MENDOCINO COAST. (LAW) JB 10/14/14

AN AUBURN MAN DIVING FOR ABALONE DIED OFF THE MENDOCINO COAST OVER THE WEEKEND.

MENDOCINO COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED SATURDAY TO A DIVER IN DISTRESS CALL SOUTH OF RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK. FAMILY MEMBERS OF 46-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL LIPSMEYER WERE ATTEMPTING CPR ON THE MAN AFTER HE SUFFERED A POSSIBLE MEDICAL PROBLEM AND STOPPED BREATHING. THE SITUATION TURNED INTO AN OCEAN RESCUE WHEN A STRONG WAVE WASHED THE DIVER BACK INTO THE OCEAN. LIPSMEYERS BODY WAS RECOVERED BY FIREFIGHTERS ON JET SKIS AND BROUGHT INTO SHORE. THIS IS AT LEAST THE FOURTH ABALONE-RELATED DEATH SINCE JUNE IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

SUNDAY FIRE DESTROYS CLEARLAKE MOBILE HOME (LAW) JB 10/14/14

A FIRE DESTROYED A MOBILE HOME IN THE CITY OF CLEARLAKE SUNDAY NIGHT.

FIREFIGHTERS FROM LAKE COUNTY FIRE, NORTHSHORE FIRE, AND CAL FIRE RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE THAT WAS FIRST REPORTED JUST AFTER 8 PM AT A HOME ON MULLEN AVENUE NEAR AUSTIN ROAD. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED, THE MOBILE HOME WAS FULLY INVOLVED AND IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO COMPLETELY EXTINGUISH THE BLAZE. THE INITIAL STRUCTURE WAS A TOTAL LOSS, AND A SECOND TRAILER NEXT DOOR ALSO SUSTAINED DAMAGE IN THE FIRE. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

CAL FIRE LIFTS AIRTANKER SAFETY STAND DOWN (LAW) JB 10/14/14

THE SAFETY STAND DOWN OF CAL FIRES GRUMMAN S-2T AIRTANKERS WAS LIFTED OVER THE WEEKEND.

THE TEMPORARY SAFETY STAND DOWN OF CAL FIRES FLEET OF 22 S-2T AIRTANKERS FOLLOWING LAST WEEKS FATAL PLANE CRASH, WAS LIFTED BY CAL FIRE OFFICIALS ON FRIDAY. FOLLOWING THE CRASH THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF CAL FIRE PILOT, GEOFFREY HUNT, AN EVALUATION OF THE PLANES AND THEIR PILOTS WAS ORDERED. THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD FOUND THAT NO STRUCTURAL FAILURES OR AGING AIRCRAFT ISSUES WERE INVOLVED IN THE CRASH AND AIRBASE PERSONNEL WERE PERMITTED TO RESUME NORMAL FLIGHT ACTIVITIES.

KELSEYVILLE MAN KILLED IN HUMBOLDT CRASH (LAW) JB 10/14/14

A SOLO-VEHICLE CRASH LAST WEEK IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A YOUNG KELSEYVILLE MAN.

18-YEAR-OLD JOEL SANCHEZ SOSA WAS DRIVING A 2007 HUMMER H3 ALPHA SOUTHBOUND ON 101 SOUTH OF THE STAFFORD ROAD UNDERCROSSING WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. SOSA LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WENT OFF THE ROADWAY AND DOWN A STEEP EMBANKMENT, HITTING A MILE MARKER AND THEN TWO TREES. SOSA, WHO WAS WEARING HIS SEAT BELT, SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH. TWO JUVENILE PASSENGERS ION THE VEHICLE WERE IN INJURED IN THE CRASH AND WERE TRANSPORTED TO REDWOOD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT.

EARLY SUNDAY FIRE DESTROYS TRAILER (LAW) JB 10/14/14

NEIGHBORS ARE BEING CREDITED WITH PREVENTING AN EARLY SUNDAY MORNING TRAILER FIRE FROM GETTING TO WILDLAND OR DAMAGING OTHER NEARBY TRAILERS.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT THE FIRE THAT OCCURRED AT LE TRANION RESORT NEAR BLUE LAKES STARTED JUST AFTER 2:30 SUNDAY MORNING. THE TRAVEL TRAILER THAT BURNED, WHICH WAS ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 28 FEET, WAS PARKED AT THE RESORT IN A LONG-TERM CAPACITY. SEVERAL NEIGHBORS TOOK FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND HOSES AND KEPT THE BLAZE CONTROLLED TO THE TRAILER UNTIL FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. ALTHOUGH THE TRAILER ITSELF WAS DESTROYED, THE ATTENTIVE NEIGHBORS WERE CREDITED BY FIRE OFFICIALS FOR THEIR QUICK ACTION.

SIMPLE FUELS TO PURCHASE YOKAYO BIOFUELS (PI/ECN) JB 10/14/14

BIODIESEL WILL REMAIN AVAILABLE LOCALLY WITH THE PENDING PURCHASE OF YOKAYO BIOFUELS.

THE CEO OF RECENTLY CLOSED YOKAYO BIOFUELS HAS ANNOUNCED THAT STEPS ARE UNDERWAY TO SELL THE ASSETS OF THE COMPANY, INCLUDING COLLECTED DEEP FRYER OIL AND EQUIPMENT, TO SIMPLE FUELS OF CHILCOOT, CALIFORNIA. SIMPLE FUELS WILL CONTINUE THE DELIVERY OF BIODIESEL TO CUSTOMERS AS WELL AS SUPPLYING FUEL TO THE RETAIL PUMPS LOCATED OFF TALMAGE ROAD, AT THE SOLAR LIVING CENTER, AND IN LAYTONVILLE. YOKAYOS PRODUCTION PLANT ON ORR SPRINGS ROAD WILL NOT BE USED FOR PROCESSING THE FUEL, AS THE NEW COMPANY WILL PRODUCE BIODIESEL FUEL AT THEIR PLANT BASED IN THE SIERRAS.

NEW CLEARLAKE PLANNING COMMISSIONER NAMED (GOV) JB 10/14/14

THE CLEARLAKE CITY COUNCIL HAS APPOINTED A NEW COMMISSIONER TO THE CLEARLAKE PLANNING COMMISSION.

THE RECORD BE REPORTED THAT, WITH A 4-0 VOTE LAST THURSDAY, MICHAEL VANDIVER WAS CHOSEN FROM A FIELD OF FIVE APPLICANTS TO FILL THE BOARDS VACANT POSITION, WHICH WAS OPENED AFTER COMMISSIONER AL BERNAL RESIGNED ON AUGUST 14. VANDIVER HAS BEEN A BOARD MEMBER OF LAKE COUNTY YOUTH SERVICES FOR TWO YEARS, AS WELL AS SERVING ON THE MEASURE H AND R COMMITTEES. HE WAS A FIREFIGHTER FOR 26 YEARS, SERVING FOR THREE YEARS ON THE BOARD OF FIREFIGHTERS AT THE PACIFIC BURN INSTITUTE. HIS TERM AS COMMISSIONER WILL EXPIRE ON MARCH 11.
