MENDO COUNTY PREPARES FOR TUESDAYS ELECTION (GOV) JB 11/3/14

THIS YEARS GENERAL ELECTION COMMENCES TOMORROW AND VOTERS ACROSS MENDOCINO COUNTY ARE PREPARING TO CAST THEIR VOTES.

ALTHOUGH THE ELECTION OFFICIALLY STARTS TOMORROW MORNING, VOTERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTY HAVE BEEN SUBMITTING MAIL-IN BALLOTS FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW. SO FAR, 9,929 MAIL-IN BALLOTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED BY THE COUNTY OFFICE AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY CLERK STATED THAT AT LEAST 72 PERCENT OF VOTERS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY CAST THEIR VOTES BY MAIL. THE NUMBER OF VOTERS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN THE COUNTY IS JUST OVER 64,000, HOWEVER, ONLY 47,164 OF THE THOSE ELIGIBLE ARE ACTUALLY REGISTERED TO VOTE.

ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGED IN CAR CRASH (LAW) JB 11/3/14

A WOMAN WHO DROVE HER CAR OFF A CLIFF IN OCTOBER HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF HER TWO CHILDREN.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE SUMMONED TO THE SCENE OF A POSSIBLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 1 IN WESTPORT ON OCTOBER 3 AT THE REQUEST OF THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL. DEPUTIES LEARNED THAT A RESPONDING CHP OFFICER HAD CONTACTED THE DRIVER, 35 YEAR OLD ATHENA RENEE DOYLE, AND RECEIVED INFORMATION THAT SHE HAD INTENTIONALLY DRIVEN HER CAR OFF THE ROAD AND DOWN A 300 FEET CLIFF. DOYLE AND HER TWO CHILDREN, AGES 2 AND 4 SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE CRASH. A FELONY WARRANT WAS ISSUED FOR DOYLE LAST WEEK AND SHE WAS ARRESTED IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY ON TWO COUNTS OF ATTEMPTED MURDER.

CITY COUNCIL GETS UPDATE ON COURTHOUSE PROJECT (GOV) JB 11/3/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL RECEIVED AN UPDATE ON THE PROPOSED NEW MENDOCINO COUNTY COURTHOUSE PROJECT.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THOUGH THE STATES ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE COURTS HAS NOT OFFICIALLY PURCHASED THE PROPERTY, THE LIKELY SITE FOR THE $100 MILLION-PLUS BUILDING IS ABOUT 4 ACRES NEAR THE UKIAH RAILROAD DEPOT AND THE INTERSECTION OF HOSPITAL DRIVE AND PERKINS STREET. THE CITY WANTS TO ENSURE THAT THE PLANS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH TRAIL BEING CONSTRUCTED NEAR THE RAILROAD TRACKS BETWEEN GOBBI STREET AND CLARA AVENUE. IF THE PROJECT MOVES FORWARD AS PLANNED, CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEW COURTHOUSE MAY BEGIN IN 2017.

CHRISTMAS TREE PERMITS NOW AVAILABLE. (PI) JB 11/3/14

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST CHRISTMAS TREE PERMITS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE 2014 HOLIDAY SEASON.

THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY THAT PERMITS FOR CUTTING CHRISTMAS TREES IN THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE. PERMITS ARE $10 PER TREE AND THERE IS A LIMIT OF ONE PERMIT PER HOUSEHOLD. PERMIT HOLDERS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT STATE AND FEDERAL QUARANTINES TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF SUDDEN OAK DEATH ARE IN EFFECT IN LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES AND TREES MAY ONLY BE TRANSPORTED INTO OTHER S.O.D QUARANTINE AREAS. PERMIT HOLDERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO CUT AND REMOVE THEIR TREES ANY DAY OF THE WEEK ONLY IN AUTHORIZED AREAS OF THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST.

WINTER HOMELESS SHELTER PROPOSED IN UKIAH (GOV) JB 11/3/14

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL IS SCHEDULED TO CONSIDER A REQUEST TO PROVIDE HALF THE FUNDING NEEDED TO OPERATE A WINTER HOMELESS SHELTER BEGINNING IN DECEMBER.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE FORD STREET PROJECT IS PROPOSING TO OPERATE AN EMERGENCY HOMELESS SHELTER FOR THE UPCOMING COLD AND WET MONTHS AT A COST OF $52,400 FOR FOUR MONTHS. THE COUNTY HAS REPORTEDLY AGREED TO CONSIDER HALF OF THE NECESSARY FUNDS IF THE CITY PROVIDES THE OTHER HALF. ACCORDING TO THE SHELTER PROPOSAL PREPARED BY THE FORD STREET PROJECT, THE SHELTER WOULD OPERATE FOR FOUR MONTHS BEGINNING DECEMBER 1, AND WOULD PROVIDE BEDS FOR 50 CLIENTS.

COVELO MAN INVOLVED IN HIGH SPEED PURSUIT (LAW) JB 11/3/14

A HIGH SPEED PURSUIT OF A COVELO MAN LEADS TO HIS ARREST ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE PATROLLING AN AREA OF HIGHWAY 162 IN COVELO LAST WEEK WHEN THEY WITNESSED A VEHICLE WITH A BROKEN WINDSHIELD DRIVING RECKLESSLY. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP FOR DEPUTIES AND LED THE DEPUTIES IN A HIGH SPEED PURSUIT THROUGH THE STREETS OF COVELO REACHING SPEEDS OF 70 MILES AN HOUR. THE PURSUIT ENDED WHEN THE DRIVER, 19 YEAR OLD HARLAN WILLIAMS OF COVELO, CRASHED THE VEHICLE THROUGH A FENCE LEADING TO AN OPEN FIELD ON AIRPORT ROAD. AFTER TRYING TO FLEE ON FOOT, WILLIAMS WAS APPREHENDED BY DEPUTIES AND FOUND TO BE ON FELONY PROBATION WITH A WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST. WILLIAMS WAS BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE MAN DISAPPEARS (LAW) JB 11/3/14

LAKE COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE MAN REPORTED MISSING LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT FROM HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE ASSOCIATION OFFICIALS, GUILLERMO FIGEROA WAS FIRST REPORTED MISSING A WEEK AGO SUNDAY. FIGEROA HAD BEEN VISITING A FRIEND IN CLEARLAKE AND TELEPHONED HIS WIFE THAT HE WAS COMING HOME BUT HE NEVER ARRIVED. CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS FOUND AN ABANDONED CAR REGISTERED TO FIGEROA IN THE VICINITY OF BURNS VALLEY ROAD. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT FIGEROA OR HIS WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 994-8251.

PARKS ASSOCIATION RECEIVES FIELD TRIP GRANT (ED) JB 1/3/14

THE MENDOCINO AREA PARKS ASSOCIATION WAS AWARDED A GRANT TO PROVIDE SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS TO THE STANDISH-HICKEY STATE RECREATION AREA.

THE GRANT OF $5,000 WAS AWARDED TO THE MENDOCINO AREA PARKS ASSOCIATION BY SAN FRANCISCO BASED SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE AS PART OF AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT WAS CREATED IN 2000 TO HELP PROVIDE REDWOOD FOREST EDUCATION. SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE, THIS YEAR, HAS AWARDED OVER $106,000 IN GRANT MONEY AS PART OF THE PROGRAM, INCLUDING A TOTAL OF SEVEN GRANTS TO HUMBOLDT AND SONOMA COUNTIES FOR FIELD TRIPS, INTERNSHIPS AND OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS.
