LENGTHY HELLS ANGELS TRIAL EXPECTED (LAW) JB 11/12/14

THE MORE THAN THREE YEAR OLD HELLS ANGELS CASE IN LAKEPORT IS MOVING ALONG WITH JURY SELECTION.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT, DURING LAST WEEKS JURY SELECTION PROCESS, JUDGE MICHAEL LUNAS EXCUSED ALL JURY CANDIDATES WHO ASKED FOR A HARDSHIP BECAUSE OF HIS CONCERN OVER THE ANTICIPATED LENGTH OF THE TRIAL. ACCORDING TO A SCHEDULE RELEASED BY THE DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY, THE TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST THREE MONTHS. BEFORE ANY ARGUMENTS CAN BE HEARD, JUDGE LUNAS NEEDS TO RULE ON SEVERAL MOTIONS BEFORE HIM IN THE CASE, INCLUDING WHETHER THE BIG VALLEY GAMING COMMISSION HAS SOVEREIGN IMMUNITY FROM PARTICIPATION IN THE CASE.

NEW HOMES ON FORD STREET DISCUSSED AGAIN (GOV) JB 11/12/14

A PLAN TO BUILD FOUR MORE HOMES ON FORD STREET WILL ONCE AGAIN BE CONSIDERED IN A DISCUSSION BY THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION.

THE ORR CREEK HOMES PROJECT, MADE UP OF FOUR SINGLE FAMILY HOMES ON FOUR VACANT LOTS NEXT TO THE BUDDY ELLER CENTER WILL BE ON THE TABLE AT TONIGHTS MEETING. AN ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENT DETAILING THE LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROJECT WAS REQUESTED LAST MONTH, AS CONCERN WAS RAISED ABOUT SEVERAL ISSUES INCLUDING THE PROTECTION OF ORR CREEK. THE FINAL APPROVAL OF THE PROJECT IS A MATTER FOR THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL AND PLANNING STAFF IS MAKING THE RECOMMENDATION TO THE COMMISSION TO APPROVE THE PROJECT.

RACETRACK FOR RADIO-CONTROLLED CARS IN UKIAH (GOV) JB 11/12/14

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL ALSO REVIEW A PROPOSAL TO ALLOW A RACETRACK FOR RADIO-CONTROLLED CARS NEAR THE FAIRGROUNDS.

ACCORDING TO A STAFF REPORT, THE PROPOSED PROJECT LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE PARCEL AT 1147 NORTH STATE STREET WOULD INCLUDE A DRIVERS STAND, SCORING BOOTH, NEW BIKE RACKS, HANDICAPPED PORTA-POTTY, AND 22 OFF-SITE PARKING PLACES, IN ADDITION TO THE TRACK ITSELF. A NOISE LEVEL EXHIBIT WITH NOISE MEASUREMENTS EXPECTED AT THE TRACK WAS PREPARED AND PRESENTED TO THE COMMISSION FOR REVIEW. STAFF IS RECOMMENDING APPROVAL OF THE PROJECT, NOTING THAT THERE WILL BE NO SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS AS FAR AS TRAFFIC, NOISE, AIR QUALITY OR WATER QUALITY.

DRY CREEK TRIBE PLANS LAKE SONOMA SOLAR ARRAY (EVR) JB 11/12/14

THE DRY CREEK TRIBE HAS PLANS IN THE WORKS FOR A LARGE SOLAR POWER PROJECT NEAR LAKE SONOMA.

A HUGE SOLAR ARRAY COULD BE IN PLACE BY NEXT SPRING IN THE HILLS OVERLOOKING LAKE SONOMA UNDER A COOPERATIVE VENTURE ANNOUNCED MONDAY BETWEEN THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND THE DRY CREEK BAND OF POMO INDIANS. ACCORDING TO DETAILS RELEASED BY THE TRIBE AND THE ARMY CORPS, THE SOLAR PANELS WOULD GENERATE ELECTRICITY FOR THE FISH HATCHERY, VISITORS CENTER AND OTHER BUILDINGS AT THE BASE OF WARM SPRINGS DAM, AS WELL AS THE TRIBES RIVER ROCK CASINO AND ITS OTHER FACILITIES NEAR GEYSERVILLE. THE APPROXIMATELY $21 MILLION PROJECT WILL BE FUNDED BY PRIVATE INVESTORS AT ZERO COST TO THE TRIBE AND THE ARMY CORPS.

4 YEAR INVESTIGATION CONTINUES IN UKIAH DEATH (LAW) JB 11/12/14

AFTER FOUR YEARS, THE WAIT CONTINUES FOR ACTION BY LAW ENFORCEMENT ON THE DEATH OF A UKIAH WOMAN.

FOUR YEARS AFTER SUSAN KEEGANS HUSBAND REPORTED FINDING HER DEAD IN THEIR UKIAH HOME, HER FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE CONCLUSION OF THE INVESTIGATION BY AUTHORITIES. THE CAUSE OF KEEGANS DEATH IN 2010 WAS MODIFIED FROM BEING INCONCLUSIVE TO BEING RULED A HOMICIDE MORE THAN TWO YEARS AGO BUT THERE HAVE BEEN NO ARRESTS MADE, NOR SUSPECTS NAMED. LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS HAVE RELEASED LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CASE AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED BY THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY IS WHETHER THERE IS ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO SUCCESSFULLY PROCEED WITH PROSECUTION OF THE CASE

MENDOCINO BOS TO REVISIT LAURAS LAW (GOV) JB 11/12/14

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL REVISIT LAURAS LAW.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT IT HAS BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE THE MENDOCINO COUNTY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY AND THE PUBLIC DEFENDERS OFFICE MADE A PRESENTATION OF LAURAS LAW TO THE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. KNOWN LEGISLATIVELY AS AB1421, LAURAS LAW WAS INITIATED IN CALIFORNIA IN 2003 TO CREATE AN ASSISTED OUTPATIENT TREATMENT PROGRAM TO PROVIDE SPECIALIZED TREATMENT FOR THOSE WHO CANT VOLUNTARILY ACCESS COMMUNITY PROVIDED SERVICES DUE TO THEIR MENTAL ILLNESS. THE LAW WAS ESTABLISHED AFTER A MENTALLY ILL MAN SHOT AND KILLED LAURA WILCOX AT THE HEALTH EDUCATION AND WELFARE BUILDING IN NEVADA COUNTY IN 2001.

SPECIAL DISTRICTS RECEIVE $2.6 MILLION FOR PROJECTS (GOV) JB 11/12/14

LAKE COUNTY SPECIAL DISTRICTS HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR STATE FUNDS TOTALING $2.6 MILLION TO COMPLETE SEVERAL LOCAL WATER PROJECTS.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES ANNOUNCED THAT $14 MILLION IN DROUGHT RELIEF GRANTS HAVE BEEN AWARDED TO THE SACRAMENTO AREA REGION, WHICH INCLUDES LAKE COUNTY, AND A TOTAL OF $200 MILLION IN GRANTS AWARDED STATEWIDE. THE GRANT FUNDING INCLUDES $270,000 FOR WATER LOSS MINIMIZATION PROJECT ON THE MT. HANNAH WATER PIPELINE, $960,000 FOR A SIMILAR PROJECT FOR THE SPRING VALLEY WATER PIPELINE, AND $1,378,000 LINKING THE PARADISE VALLEY WATER SYSTEM TO THE CLEARLAKE OAKS COUNTY WATER DISTRICT.

CLEARLAKE COUNCIL DISCUSSES VETERAN HOUSING (GOV) JB 11/12/14

THE CLEARLAKE CITY COUNCIL WILL DISCUSS A PROPOSAL FOR A VETERANS HOUSING PROJECT AT ITS MEETING THIS WEEK.

THE COUNCIL MEMBERS WILL DISCUSS AND CONSIDER CONCEPTUAL APPROVAL OF DEVELOPING A COUNTY-OWNED PROPERTY ON 18TH AVENUE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF A HOUSING PROJECT FOR VETERANS. THE COUNTY IS INTERESTED IN DONATING THE PROPERTY TO THE NONPROFIT VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER OF AMERICA TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE VETERANS HOUSING, WITH FUNDING FOR THE PROJECT ANTICIPATED TO COME FROM PROPOSITION 41, WHICH VOTERS PASSED IN JUNE TO PROVIDE FOR VETERANS HOUSING. THE MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR 6:00PM THURSDAY AT CLEARLAKE CITY HALL.
