WILLITS FIRE DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT OVER $600K (LAW) JB 11/26/14

THE DAMAGE ESTIMATE TO THREE BUSINESSES INVOLVED IN A SUSPECTED ARSON IN WILLITS HAS TOPPED $600,000.

FIRE OFFICIALS STATED ON MONDAY THAT THE DAMAGE ESTIMATE TO THE BUILDING THAT HOUSED JOHNS PLACE, A DAYCARE CENTER, AND A SMALL MARKET HAS CLIMBED TO MORE THAN $600,000. IN ADDITION TO THE FIRE, SMOKE AND WATER DAMAGE TO THE BUSINESSES AND THEIR CONTENTS, THE HEAT FROM THE FIRE CAUSED ABOUT $6,500 IN DAMAGE TO A WILLITS POLICE PATROL CAR. PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS STATED THAT DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING WAS WORSE THAN IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BECAUSE ARSON SUSPECT LACIE ROSS FORCED FIREFIGHTERS TO RETREAT BY BRANDISHING WHAT TURNED OUT TO BE A FAKE GUN.

STASH OF STOLEN BICYCLES FOUND IN UKIAH (LAW) JB 11/26/14

A PROBATION SEARCH LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A UKIAH MAN WITH A STASH OF STOLEN BICYCLES.

UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON WAUGH LANE TO PERFORM A PROBATION SEARCH AT THE RESIDENCE AND WITNESSED SEVERAL PEOPLE TRYING TO FLEE AS THEY APPROACHED. 31-YEAR-OLD NOEY JOHNSON JR WAS FOUND HIDING UNDER A BED IN THE RESIDENCE AND WAS DETAINED. WHEN OFFICERS ENTERED THE RESIDENCE, THEY FOUND NUMEROUS BICYCLES, MANY IN VARYING STATES OF ASSEMBLY AND SOME OF WHICH HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT JOHNSON HAD BEEN DISMANTLING STOLEN BICYCLES AND HE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

UKIAH WINTER SHELTER OPENING DELAYED (PI) JB 11/26/14

THE OPENING OF A WINTER SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS IN UKIAH HAS BEEN DELAYED.

THE DIRECTOR OF THE FORD STREET PROJECT STATED THAT THE EXPECTED TWO-WEEK DELAY IS DUE TO THE SHELTERS BATHROOMS NEEDING TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE THE FACILITY CAN BEGIN HOUSING PEOPLE. THE FUNDING IS IN PLACE TO COMPLETE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS BUT SEVERAL DELAYS AND SCHEDULING CONFLICTS WITH CONTRACTORS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE LATE OPENING OF THE SHELTER. BARRING ANY OTHER DELAYS, THE SHELTER SHOULD BE OPEN AND IN BUSINESS BY MID DECEMBER.

STATE OF JEFFERSON PRESENTATION NEXT WEEK (GOV) JB 11/26/14

PROPONENTS OF A PLAN TO CREATE A 51ST STATE WILL MAKE A PRESENTATION TO THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS NEXT WEEK.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE PRESENTATION IS TO FULLY INFORM THE BOARD AS TO THE PURPOSE OF THE JEFFERSON MOVEMENT, TO EXPLAIN TO HOW THE PEOPLE OF LAKE COUNTY WOULD BENEFIT, AND TO ALLOW TIME TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS. THE STATE OF JEFFERSON, AS CURRENTLY ENVISIONED, WOULD INCLUDE 20 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNTIES, INCLUDING LAKE AND MENDOCINO, AS WELL AS SEVERAL NORTHERN OREGON COUNTIES. THE PRESENTATION IS SCHEDULED FOR 9:30 AM, TUESDAY DECEMBER 2 IN THE BOARD CHAMBERS OF THE LAKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE.

GUALALA REDWOODS INC HAS PUT ITS 30,000 ACRE PROPERTY UP FOR SALE.

NEARLY 30,000 ACRES OF TIMBERLAND STRADDLING THE BORDERS OF MENDOCINO AND SONOMA COUNTIES AND STRETCHING ACROSS THE MOUTH OF THE GUALALA RIVER HAVE BEEN OFFERED UP FOR SALE, CREATING WHAT CONSERVATIONISTS ARE CALLING A PRIME OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A PROTECTED AREA LARGER THAT THE POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE. GUALALA REDWOODS INC. HAS PUT THE PROPERTY UP SALE, INCLUDING NEARLY 20 MILES OF RIVER FRONTAGE. THE OUTCOME OF ANY SALE WONT BE KNOWN FOR MONTHS HOWEVER, AS OFFERS ON THE PROPERTY ARENT DUE UNTIL EARLY NEXT YEAR.

CLEARLAKE PD INVESTIGATES INDECENT EXPOSURE (LAW) JB 11/26/14

THE CLEARLAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING AT LEAST TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS OF INDECENT EXPOSURE IN THE CITY.

DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS ARE ASKING FOR THE PUBLICS HELP IN GATHERING MORE INFORMATION OF THE TWO INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED AT REDBUD PARK AND AUSTIN PARK THIS MONTH. WITNESSES REPORTED SEEING A MALE SUBJECT EXPOSING HIMSELF IN HIS VEHICLE IN PLAIN VIEW OF OTHERS. HE IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE IN HIS EARLY TO MID 40S, BETWEEN 63 AND 67 INCHES TALL, 280 TO 320 POUNDS AND DRIVING A NEWER WHITE TOYOTA SEDAN. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION OR WHO MAY HAVE WITNESSED THE INCIDENTS IS ASKED TO CALL THE CLEARLAKE POLICE AT 994-8251.

WILDLIFE LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST MENDOCINO (LAW/EVR) JB 11/26/14

A NEW LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST MENDOCINO COUNTY OVER A CONTRACT WITH WILDLIFE SERVICES FEDERAL PREDATOR CONTROL PROGRAM.

A COALITION OF ANIMAL PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION GROUPS AND A LOCAL MENDOCINO RESIDENT FILED A LAWSUIT IN CALIFORNIA SUPERIOR COURT AGAINST MENDOCINO COUNTY FOR VIOLATING THE CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENT QUALITY ACT. THE LAWSUIT CHALLENGES THE COUNTYS FAILURE TO CONDUCT A LEGALLY REQUIRED ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF ITS CONTRACT WITH THE USDAS WILDLIFE SERVICES. THE SUIT CLAIMS THE CONTRACT AUTHORIZES WILDLIFE SERVICES DEPREDATION RIGHTS WITHOUT ASSESSING ECOLOGICAL IMPACT. THE PROGRAMS PREDATOR CONTROL ACTIVITIES ARE CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE USDAS OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL.

CAL FIRE ENCOURAGES HOLIDAY COOKING SAFETY (LAW/PI) JB 11/26/14

WITH THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY AT HAND, CAL FIRE REMINDS RESIDENTS ABOUT THE DANGERS THAT HOME FIRES POSE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

THANKSGIVING IS A TIME OF FOOD, FUN AND FESTIVITIES, BUT THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ALSO A TIME TO BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS AS THOUSANDS OF HOME FIRES ACROSS THE NATION ARE CAUSED FROM HOLIDAY COOKING. WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY VISITING, ITS IMPORTANT NOT TO GET DISTRACTED AND TO BE AWARE OF ALL RELATED COOKING ACTIVITIES. THE CALIFORNIA STATE FIRE MARSHAL NOTED THAT THE HOLIDAYS BRING INHERENT FIRE DANGER THAT CAN QUICKLY LEAD TO TRAGEDY IF PEOPLE DONT TAKE JUST A FEW EASY STEPS TO PREVENT A FIRE. REMEMBER TO KEEP AN EYE ON WHAT YOU FRY AND ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY.
