UKIAH MOVES PROPOSED WELL SITE (GOV/EVR) JB 12/1/14

CONTAMINATION FROM A BOLT PLANT IS FORCING THE CITY OF UKIAH TO CONSIDER A NEW SITE FOR ITS PLANNED NEW WELL NEAR BRUSH STREET.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT AT THE LAST MEETING OF THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL, THE PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR SAID TESTS REVEALED WATER QUALITY ISSUES AT THE PREVIOUS PLANNED SITE, WHICH WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE BUDDY ELLER CENTER AND THE ORR STREET BRIDGE. TEST RESULTS, THAT HAD BEEN DELAYED SINCE AUGUST ULTIMATELY REVEALED THE PROPOSED LOCATION WOULD HAVE TOO MUCH CONTAMINATION, AND THE NEW WELL, CALLED WELL NO. 9, WOULD NEED TO BE MOVED ABOUT 1,000 FEET WHICH SHOULD RESOLVE THE CONTAMINATION ISSUE. BECAUSE THE SITE HAS BEEN MOVED, WELL NO. 9 IS NOW BACK IN THE DESIGN PROCESS.

HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN CLEARLAKE (LAW) JB 12/1/14

POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE DISCOVERY OF HUMAN REMAINS IN CLEARLAKE.

CLEARLAKE POLICE DETECTIVES ARE INVESTIGATING THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE DEATH OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE REMAINS WERE FOUND IN AN ISOLATED AND HEAVILY WOODED AREA OF THE CITY. A RESIDENT ON OLEANDER STREET CALLED POLICE ON FRIDAY SAYING HE HAD DISCOVERED A HUMAN SKULL IN HIS YARD. A SEARCH EFFORT BY SEVERAL AGENCIES INCLUDING THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES, K-9 CORPS AND TWO CANINE FROM THE CALIFORNIA RESCUE DOG ASSOCIATION LOCATED THE PARTIAL REMAINS OF A DECEASED PERSON ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM THE RESIDENCE. AN AUTOPSY IS SCHEDULED TO DETERMINE THE IDENTITY AND CAUSE OF DEATH OF THE INDIVIDUAL.

CHP 911 CENTER GETS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION (LAW) JB 12/1/14

THE 911 CALL CENTERS OF THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL HAVE RECEIVED NATIONAL ACCREDITATION.

THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROLS COMMUNICATIONS CENTERS, WHICH ANSWER APPROXIMATELY 7 MILLION 911 CALLS PER YEAR, HAVE BEEN FORMALLY ACCREDITED BY THE COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. TO MEET ACCREDITATION STANDARDS, THE CHP IMPLEMENTED A STATEWIDE QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM FOR ITS 25 COMMUNICATIONS CENTERS. SUPERVISORS REVIEW AUDIO TAPES OF 911 CALLS AND ANALYZE PERFORMANCE OF THE DISPATCHER AND ACCURACY OF THE INFORMATION. TO MAINTAIN ACCREDITATION, CHP MUST UNDERGO A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT EVERY THREE YEARS.

NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS TO BE SWORN IN WEDNESDAY (GOV) JB 12/1/14

THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL BE SWORN IN WEDNESDAY AS WE SAY GOODBYE TO THE OUTGOING MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS.

THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO ATTEND A RECEPTION FOR EXITING MAYOR PHIL BALDWIN AND COUNCIL MEMBERS MARY ANNE LANDIS AND BENJ THOMAS BEFORE THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED MEETING WEDNESDAY EVENING. LANDIS AND THOMAS HAD CHOSEN NOT TO RUN FOR COUNCIL AGAIN, AND BALDWIN WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN HIS RUN FOR A 5TH TERM ON THE COUNCIL. THE COUNCIL MEETING WILL BEGIN WITH NEW MEMBERS MAUREEN MO MULHEREN, JIM BROWN, AND KEVIN DOBLE BEING SWORN IN TO JOIN DOUG CRANE AND STEVE SCALAMINI ON THE COUNCIL THE RECEPTION STARTS AT 5 PM WEDNESDAY, WITH THE NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS FIRST MEETING ST START AT 6.

WILLITS JURY DUTY WARRANT PHONE SCAM (LAW) JB 12/1/14

A NEW JURY DUTY WARRANT PHONE SCAM HAS BEEN REPORTED IN THE CITY OF WILLITS.

THE WILLITS POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED CALLS FROM SEVERAL CITIZENS THAT AN INDIVIDUAL IS CALLING IDENTIFYING HIMSELF AS LIEUTENANT FOR THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT WHO STATES THEY HAVE MISSED JURY DUTY AND THAT A WARRANT FOR THEIR ARREST HAS BEEN ISSUED. THE CALLER CLAIMS THE ISSUE CAN BE CLEARED UP BY PAYING $5,600 IN CASH OR GREEN PACKS WHICH ARE TO BE PURCHASED AT A LOCAL RITE AID TO A PAUL CLEMONS WHO WILL ARRANGE TO MEET THEM LATER AT THE COURT HOUSE. POLICE WARN THAT THESE CALLS ARE FRAUDULENT AND THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A VARIANT OF A SCAM THAT HAS BEEN CIRCULATING AROUND THE STATE. NO COURT OR LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEE WILL EVER CONTACT A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC AND REQUEST PAYMENT IN ANY FORM IN LIEU OF ATTENDING JURY DUTY OR TO MAKE UP FOR FAILURE TO ATTEND JURY DUTY. IF YOU RECEIVE SUCH A CALL, DO NOT COMPLY TO THE CALLER DEMANDS AND CONTACT YOUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT TO REPORT THE INCIDENT.

NEW TOOL TRACKS CHANGES IN OCEAN ACIDITY (EVR) JB 12/1/14

SCIENTISTS ON THE WEST COAST HAVE A NEW RESEARCH TOOL TO TRACK CHANGES TO OUR OCEAN.

A NEW RESEARCH TOOL LAUNCHED LAST WEEK BY THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION IS ALLOWING SCIENTISTS TO BETTER TRACK CHANGES TO OCEAN CHEMISTRY ALONG THE U.S. WEST COAST. THE TOOL PROVIDES REAL-TIME OCEAN ACIDIFICATION DATA ALONG THE COAST AND IN SOME PROTECTED BAYS. SEVERAL DOZEN SENSORS INSTALLED AT SHELLFISH FARMS AND HATCHERIES MONITOR AND ACT AS AN EARLY WARNING SYSTEM FOR OCEAN ACIDIFICATION CAUSED WHEN THE OCEAN ABSORBS CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS, MOSTLY FROM THE ATMOSPHERE. THE NEW SENSOR SYSTEM WILL BE UTILIZED BY FEDERAL, TRIBAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS, PRIVATE COMPANIES AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE ALL COMBINED FORCES TO MONITOR THE HEALTH OF OUR OCEANS.

LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTY CAN EXPECT ANOTHER WEEK OF WET WEATHER AND POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS.

AFTER A RAINY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS PREDICTED CONTINUED RAIN AND THE POSSIBILITY OF THUNDERSTORMS FOR LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES. THE CURRENT WEATHER FORECAST IS FOR WET WEATHER ALL THE WAY THROUGH FRIDAY, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AREA ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. LAKE COUNTY COULD SEE AS MUCH AS AN INCH OF RAIN ON TUESDAY AND THE UKIAH AREA COULD SEE OVER AN INCH AND A HALF BETWEEN TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.
