MASKED ROBBER, TEEN ACCOMPLICE ARRESTED (LAW) JB 12/2/14

TWO SUSPECTED THIEVES, AGES 18 AND 17, INVOLVED IN TWO ARMED ROBBERIES IN MENDOCINO COUNTY OVER THE WEEKEND WERE IN CUSTODY MONDAY.

ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF, THE TWO SUSPECTS, BOTH REDWOOD VALLEY RESIDENTS, WERE SUSPECTED OF HOLDING UP MARKETS IN ALBION AND REDWOOD VALLEY. EMPLOYEES OF THE MARKETS STATED THAT THE ROBBER ENTERED WEARING A BLACK MASK, BEANIE, GLOVES, AND SUNGLASSES TO HIDE THEIR FACE. DURING SATURDAYS ROBBERY AT THE LITTLE BAKERS MARKET ON EAST ROAD, THE SUSPECT BRANDISHED A KNIFE AS HE DEMANDED CASH. AFTER GETTING MONEY, HE FLED THE STORE IN A HONDA SEDAN DRIVEN BY AN ACCOMPLICE. DURING SUNDAYS ROBBERY AT THE ALBION STORE, THE ROBBER KEPT HIS HAND CONCEALED IN A BAG ON HIS HIP, ACTING AS IF HE HAD A GUN. HE FLED THE SCENE WITH ABOUT $500, AGAIN IN THE HONDA SEDAN, BUT WAS SPOTTED SPEEDING ON COMPTCHE-UKIAH ROAD AND DEPUTIES STOPPED THE CAR NEAR FLYNN CREEK ROAD. DEPUTIES ARRESTED 18 YEAR OLD TRISTAN MENDEZ AND THE 17 YEAR OLD DRIVER AFTER FINDING EVIDENCE IN THE CAR LINKING THEM TO BOTH ROBBERIES.

STATE WATER OFFICIALS OPTIMISTIC FOR 2015 (EVR) JB 12/2/14

FOLLOWING THREE DROUGHT YEARS, STATE WATER OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE ENTERING CALIFORNIAS WET SEASON WITH A GLIMMER OF OPTIMISM.

THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES ANNOUNCED MONDAY THAT IT PLANS TO PROVIDE 10 PERCENT OF NORMAL WATER SUPPLIES TO FARMERS AND CITIES IN 2015 FROM THE STATES LARGE SYSTEM OF RESERVOIRS AND CANALS. THE PLANNED RELEASE IS UP FROM THE RECORD LOW 5 PERCENT RELEASED THIS YEAR. OFFICIALS SAY IMPROVED RAIN AND SNOW FORECASTS FOR 2015 IS PROVIDING SOME HOPE, BUT THE AMOUNT OF WATER ACTUALLY RELEASED MAY DROP IF THE RAINY SEASON THROUGH FEBRUARY FAILS TO PRODUCE. THE DIRECTOR OF THE WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT STATED THAT CALIFORNIA NEEDS A WET YEAR WITH 150 PERCENT OF NORMAL RAIN AND SNOW TO REPLENISH ITS RESERVOIRS AND RECOVER FROM DROUGHT.

MENDOCINO ARTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2014 CHAMPIONS (PI) JB 12/2/14

THE ARTS COUNCIL OF MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS ANNOUNCED THE 2014 ART CHAMPION AWARDS.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE ARTS COUNCIL OF MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS MADE THEIR SELECTIONS FOR THE 12TH ANNUAL MENDOCINO COUNTY ART CHAMPION AWARD RECIPIENTS. EACH YEAR, NOMINATIONS FOR ART CHAMPION AWARDS ARE RECEIVED FROM THE COMMUNITY. THE WINNERS ARE SELECTED BY THE ARTS COUNCIL AND RECOGNIZED BY THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. THIS YEARS WINNERS INCLUDE THE ARENA THEATER IN THE CATEGORY OF BUSINESS, SPENCER BREWER IN THE CATEGORY OF INDIVIDUAL, JUDY GEER LINNEY IN THE ARTIST CATEGORY, AND LECH SLOCINSKI IN THE EDUCATION CATEGORY.

CALTRANS SEEKS $64 MILLION MORE FOR WILLITS BYPASS (TR) JB 12/2/14

CAL TRANS IS SEEKING ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION OF THE WILLITS BYPASS.

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT REPORTED THAT CALTRANS IS SEEKING AN ADDITIONAL $64 MILLION TO COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION ON THE HIGHWAY BYPASS AROUND WILLITS, A PROJECT THAT HAS BEEN BESET BY NUMEROUS DELAYS AND LEGAL CHALLENGES FROM OPPONENTS WHO THINK THE ROAD IS UNNECESSARY AND TOO ENVIRONMENTALLY DAMAGING. CALTRANS OFFICIALS HAVE SAID THAT THE DELAYS, INCLUDING RUNNING AFOUL OF ENVIRONMENTAL PERMITS NEEDED TO BUILD IN SENSITIVE WETLAND AREAS, WOULD LEAD TO COST OVERRUNS. IN A REPORT FOR THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONS DECEMBER 10 MEETING, THE AGENCY ACKNOWLEDGED FOR THE FIRST TIME THE EXTENT OF THE OVERRUN. THE COMMISSION WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO APPROVE THE COST INCREASE, WHICH WOULD ADD NEARLY 45 PERCENT TO THE PROJECTS CURRENT BUDGET OF $144 MILLION. WORK ON THE BYPASS IS 55 PERCENT COMPLETE AND IT IS EXPECTED TO OPEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2017, TWO YEARS BEHIND SCHEDULE.

RECREATION DISTRICT CONSIDERS OFF-ROAD PARK (GOV/EVR) JB 12/2/14

THE MENDOCINO COAST RECREATION DISTRICT IS CONSIDERING A PLAN FOR AN OFF-ROAD VEHICLE PARK ON THE COAST.

THE MENDOCINO COAST RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAVE EXPRESSED SIGNIFICANT INTEREST IN FORMING A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CALIFORNIA RECREATION ALLIANCE IN THE CREATION OF A YOUTH-ORIENTED OFF-ROAD VEHICLE PARK. A PROPOSAL WAS MADE DURING THE BOARDS MEETING LAST MONTH TO DEVELOP A DISTRICT-OWNED 586 ACRE PROPERTY ON HIGHWAY 20 AT SUMMERS LANE INTO AN OFF-ROAD VEHICLE TRAINING FACILITY FOR YOUTH. BOARD MEMBERS ACKNOWLEDGED THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO THE DISTRICT, INCLUDING A SOLUTION TO THE DISTRICTS BANKRUPTCY FILING AND AN ECONOMIC BENEFIT TO THE AREA.

DODD, MCGUIRE SWORN INTO OFFICE ON MONDAY (GOV) JB 12/2/14

TWO NEW REPRESENTATIVES IN THE CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE FROM LAKE COUNTY WERE SWORN INTO OFFICE ON MONDAY.

FOURTH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE, BILL DODD, AND SENATE SECOND DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE, MIKE MCGUIRE, TOOK THEIR OATHS OF OFFICE DURING A CEREMONY AT THE STATE CAPITOL MONDAY AFTERNOON. DODD PREVIOUSLY SERVED AS A MEMBER OF THE NAPA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, AND MCGUIRE HELD THE POSITION OF A SUPERVISOR IN SONOMA COUNTY. DODD WILL REPRESENT ALL OF LAKE AND NAPA COUNTIES, AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF YOLO, COLUSA, SOLANO, AND SONOMA WITH MCGUIRE SPEAKING FOR SEVEN DIFFERENT COUNTIES INCLUDING LAKE AND MENDOCINO.
