REDWOOD VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WONT OPEN (ED) JB 12/15/14

THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS DECIDED NOT TO RE-OPEN THE REDWOOD VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT VOTED UNANIMOUSLY THURSDAY NOT TO RE-OPEN THE SCHOOL AFTER LEARNING THAT THE ESTIMATED COST TO DO SO WOULD BE BETWEEN $1.5 AND $2.6 MILLION DOLLARS. K THROUGH 4TH GRADE STUDENTS WILL STAY AT CALPELLA ELEMENTARY AND GRADES 5 THROUGH 8 WILL ATTEND EAGLE PEAK. THE BOARD HAS APPROVED THE HIRING OF A CONSULTANT TO FURTHER EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING A MAGNET SCHOOL FOR ARTS AND SCIENCES, POSSIBLY AT THE REDWOOD VALLEY ELEMENTARY LOCATION.

CAR HITS BEDROOM IN REDWOOD VALLEY. (LAW) JB 12/15/14

A CAR SIDESWIPED A HOUSE FRIDAY IN REDWOOD VALLEY, HITTING THE WALL OF A BEDROOM WHERE A WOMAN AND HER CHILD WERE RESTING.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 1:30 PM ON FRIDAY WHEN THE DRIVER OF A TOYOTA COROLLA HEADED WESTBOUND ON ROAD I LEFT THE ROADWAY NEAR MADRONE LANE AND STRUCK A POWER POLE. THE CAR THEN KNOCKED DOWN A FEW FEET OF FENCE AND AT LEAST ONE TREE BEFORE STRIKING THE CORNER OF THE HOUSE AND STOPPING. THE WOMAN AND HER CHILD IN THE HOME WERE SHAKEN, BUT NEITHER WERE INJURED FROM THE CRASH. THE CAUSE OF THE COLLISION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY CHP, BUT ALCOHOL IS NOT SUSPECTED.

LAKE MENDOCINO GAINING WATER (EVR) JB 12/15/14

THE WATER LEVEL IN LAKE MENDOCINO HAS RISEN STEADILY SINCE LAST THURSDAYS DOWNPOUR.

ACCORDING TO DATA FROM THE CALIFORNIA DATA EXCHANGE CENTER, LAKE MENDOCINO HAS GAINED MORE THAN 10,000 ACRE-FEET OF MUCH-NEEDED WATER IN THE LAST 5 DAYS. AS OF 3 AM THIS MORNING, THE LAKE LEVEL WAS MEASURED AT 45,573 ACRE FEET COMPARED TO THURSDAY MORNINGS LEVEL OF 33,950 ACRE-FEET. A SINGLE ACRE-FOOT CONTAINS 325,851 GALLONS OF WATER. AFTER MONTHS OF THE WATER LINE BEING OVER 100 YARDS AWAY FROM THE SOUTH BOAT RAMP, THE LAKE LEVEL REACHED THE RAMP OVER THE WEEKEND.

WILLITS BYPASS POSSIBLY NAMED TO HONOR NAVY SEAL (TR) JB 12/15/14

A SECTION OF THE WILLITS BYPASS MAY POSSIBLY BE RENAMED TO HONOR FALLEN NAVY SEAL, JESSE PITTMAN.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL HEAR A RESOLUTION AT TUESDAYS MEETING INTRODUCED BY 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR JOHN PINCHES THAT WOULD ADOPT A SECTION OF THE WILLITS BYPASS AS A MEMORIAL BRIDGE TO HONOR LOCAL HERO AND FALLEN NAVY SEAL, JESSE PITTMAN. IN 2011, 27-YEAR-OLD PITTMAN WAS ONE OF 31 MILITARY PERSONNEL KILLED IN A HELICOPTER CRASH IN AFGHANISTAN. THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS RECEIVED NUMEROUS LETTERS OF SUPPORT AND SIGNATURES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH JESSE PITTMAN MEMORIAL BRIDGE.

HUMAN REMAINS FOUND ON NOYO BEACH (LAW) JB 12/15/14

THE REMAINS OF A DEAD BODY WERE FOUND EARLY SUNDAY MORNING NEAR THE SURF ON NOYO BEACH IN FORT BRAGG.

MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICIALS STATED THAT THE REMAINS OF AN ADULT MALE, ESTIMATED AT BETWEEN 510 AND 6 AND WEIGHING 130 TO 160 POUNDS, APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN IN THE WATER FOR SOME TIME. THE DEAD MAN WAS WEARING BLUE SWEATPANTS, GRAY SOCKS, AND BROWN HIKING BOOTS, WITH A TATTOO OF WHAT APPEARED TO BE THE LETTER S ON THE BACK OF HIS LEFT HAND. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN IDENTIFYING THE MAN SHOULD CONTACT THE SHERIFFS TIP LINE AT 234-2100.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE IN UPPER LAKE. (LAW) JB 12/15/14

A LUCERNE PEDESTRIAN SUFFERED MAJOR HEAD TRAUMA AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN UPPER LAKE.

CHP OFFICERS AND NORTHSHORE FIRE PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE ACCIDENT THAT OCCURRED JUST BEFORE 6 PM SATURDAY ON HIGHWAY 20 EAST OF MAIN STREET. THE 50 YEAR OLD LUCERNE MAN WAS CROSSING HIGHWAY 20 ON FOOT WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A TOYOTA RAV4 AT 40-45 MILES AN HOUR, DRIVEN BY 66 YEAR OLD ARTHUR TAKAO. THE INJURED LUCERNE MAN WAS TRANSPORTED TO SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL, THEN FLOWN BY REACH AIR AMBULANCE TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL FOR TREATMENT. THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BUT CHP HAS STATED THAT THE DRIVER WAS NOT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL.

BUTANE EXPLOSION DAMAGES WILLITS MOTEL ROOM (LAW) JB 12/15/14

A ROOM IN A WILLITS MOTEL WAS DAMAGED AFTER A BUTANE EXPLOSION LAST WEEK.

WILLITS POLICE OFFICERS AND THE LITTLE LAKE FIRE PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE PINE CONE MOTEL ON SOUTH MAIN STREET IN WILLITS WEDNESDAY EVENING TO THE REPORT OF THE EXPLOSION. A RELEASE OF BUTANE FROM REPORTEDLY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY INSIDE ONE OF THE ROOMS IGNITED AND THE CONCUSSIVE EXPLOSION ACTUALLY LIFTED THE CEILING OF THE ROOM. THE EVENT WAS QUALIFIED AS A MINOR EXPLOSION THAT DID NOT CAUSE ANY SIGNIFICANT FIRE BUT RESULTED IN A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF SMOKE. ONE UNNAMED SUSPECT WAS QUESTIONED AT THE SCENE BY WILLITS POLICE OFFICERS.

WINE AUCTION RAISES $96,500 FOR LAKE COUNTY (ED) JB 12/15/14

23 EDUCATIONAL AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WERE THE RECIPIENTS OF OVER $96,000 RAISED FROM THIS YEARS LAKE COUNTY WINE AUCTION.

THE WINE ALLIANCE, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION OF WINERIES AND WINE RELATED BUSINESSES AND SUPPORTERS ORGANIZED THE ANNUAL LAKE COUNTY WINE AUCTION. FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS, FIVE YOUTH-ORIENTED PROGRAMS AND 13 OTHER NONPROFIT GROUPS WERE PRESENTED WITH $96,500 RAISED AT THE 15TH ANNUAL EVENT, HELD IN SEPTEMBER. SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 2000, THE WINE ALLIANCE HAS RAISED NEARLY $1.2 MILLION TO FOSTER THE ARTS, BENEFIT HEALTH SERVICES AND OTHERWISE SUPPORT THE COMMUNITIES OF LAKE COUNTY.
