FIFTH DAY FOR SOCIAL SERVICES SOUGHT IN MENDO (GOV) JB 12/16/14

A FIVE DAY WORK WEEK FOR SOCIAL SERVICES IN MENDOCINO COUNTY IS BEING REQUESTED BY A SPECIAL ADVOCACY GROUP.

THE COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES, KNOWN AS CASA, HAS ASKED THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO INCREASE THE HOURS OF THE COUNTYS SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT FROM FOUR TO FIVE DAYS A WEEK. THE GROUP CONTENDS THE SHORT WEEK OF SOCIAL SERVICES AVAILABILITY HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT TO NEGLECTED AND ABUSED CHILDREN OF THE COURT SYSTEM. COUNTY STAFF ARE RECOMMENDING TO THE BOARD TO DENY THE REQUEST FOR THE LONGER WORK WEEK, SAYING IT IS NOT IN THE INTEREST OF THE DEPARTMENTS EMPLOYEES OR CLIENTS.

LAKE COUNTY BOS APPROVES WASTE CONTRACTS (GOV) JB 12/16/14

TWO WASTE HAULER CONTRACT EXTENSIONS WERE APPROVED BY THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS LAST WEEK.

AT ITS REGULAR MEETING ON TUESDAY, THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVED CONTRACT EXTENSIONS WITH FRANCHISE HAULERS SOUTHLAKE REFUSE AND LAKE COUNTY WASTE SOLUTIONS. THE NEW 20-YEAR CONTRACTS, WITH AN OPTION FOR TWO ADDITIONAL FIVE-YEAR EXTENSIONS, INCLUDE A PILOT PROGRAM FOR UNIVERSAL SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY GROWTH AREAS. THE PROGRAM FOCUSES ON SINGLE FAMILY AND MULTI FAMILY RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES AND REQUIRES PROPERTY OWNERS, TENANTS, OR MANAGERS, TO SUBSCRIBE TO WEEKLY WASTE REMOVAL SERVICES TO HELP REDUCE ILLEGAL DUMPING AND TO INCREASE REVENUE FROM REFUSE DISPOSAL.

WREATHS BEING MADE TO BENEFIT HUMANE SOCIETY (PI) JB 12/16/14

A GROUP OF ELVES ARE CURRENTLY PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS AT THE REDWOOD VALLEY HUMANE SOCIETY FOR INLAND MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE HUMANE SOCIETY, WHICH IS MAINLY RUN BY VOLUNTEERS, HAS SET UP A PROJECT WORKSHOP OF SORTS WHERE THE GROUP CREATES HANDMADE WREATHS, SWAGS AND TABLE DECORATIONS, WITH SALES USED TO BENEFIT THE SOCIETY. BECAUSE OF THE TIRELESS NUMBER OF HOURS BEING DEDICATED TO THE PROJECT, PARTICIPANTS THINK OF THEMSELVES AS CHRISTMAS ELVES. DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, THE HUMANE SOCIETY TYPICALLY BRINGS IN BETWEEN $6,000 TO $7,000 FROM THE SALES OF THE WREATHS.

HOLIDAY PARADE OF LIGHTS SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY (PI) JB 12/16/14

DESPITE A DISMAL NUMBER OF ENTRANTS, THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARADE OF LIGHTS WILL GO ON IN UKIAH.

THE UKIAH MAIN STREET PROGRAM RECENTLY HAD THE DIFFICULT TASK OF DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO PROCEED WITH THE HOLIDAY PARADE OF LIGHTS DUE TO A LACK OF PARTICIPANTS. THE RESPONSE TO THE PROGRAMS REPEATED REQUESTS FOR PARADE ENTRANTS HAS BEEN VERY LOW, ONLY YIELDING NINE ENTRIES, NEARLY CANCELING THIS YEARS PARADE. HOWEVER, THANKS TO THE DESIRE BY THOSE NINE ENTRIES, INCLUDING A GROUP OF 20 GIRL SCOUTS WHO WORKED HARD ON CREATING THEIR LIGHTED COSTUMES, THE MAIN STREET PROGRAM MADE THE DECISION TO GO ON WITH THE SHOW. THE HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE STARTS AT 5 PM THIS THURSDAY WITH THE PARADE OF LIGHTS STARTING PROMPTLY AT 6:30 ON SCHOOL STREET BETWEEN MILL AND HENRY STREETS.

POINT ARENA MAN DIES IN HOUSE FIRE (LAW) JB 12/16/14

A HOME FIRE IN POINT ARENA ON FRIDAY RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF A MENDOCINO COUNTY MAN.

REDWOOD COAST-POINT ARENA FIRE PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE THAT WAS FIRST REPORTED BY A NEIGHBOR JUST BEFORE 1:15 AM FRIDAY AT AN ADDRESS ON PINE REEF STREET. THE VICTIMS CAR WAS PARKED OUTSIDE THE HOME, A TRAILER WITH AN ATTACHED WOODEN STRUCTURE, AND THE NEIGHBOR THOUGHT THE VICTIM WAS HOME AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE. ONCE FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE BLAZE KNOCKED DOWN, IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE VICTIM HAD DIED INSIDE THE HOME. THE NAME OF THE VICTIM HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED YET.

SHOTS FIRED AT LUCERNE MOTEL SUNDAY EVENING (LAW) JB 12/16/14

LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES RESPONDED SUNDAY EVENING TO SHOTS BEING FIRED AT A LUCERNE MOTEL.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE RIVIERA MOTEL ON HIGHWAY 20 IN LUCERNE JUST BEFORE 7 PM SUNDAY EVENING TO A REPORT OF MULTIPLE SUBJECTS ARGUING AND SHOTS BEING FIRED. AS DEPUTIES ARRIVED, THEY WITNESSED 20 YEAR OLD MARCUS RAY GREGORY WITH A HANDGUN AS HE RAN INTO ONE OF THE MOTEL ROOMS. GREGORY ATTEMPTED TO ESCAPE FROM A REAR WINDOW BUT WAS APPREHENDED QUICKLY. WITNESSES STATED THAT GREGORY WAS INVOLVED IN A DOMESTIC DISPUTE WITH A FEMALE VICTIM AND, AFTER A WITNESS PULLED GREGORY OFF THE VICTIM, THE SUSPECT RETRIEVED A HANDGUN FROM HIS ROOM, THREATENING EVERYONE OUTSIDE, INCLUDING CHILDREN. GREGORY BEGAN FIRING AS PEOPLE RAN FOR COVER AND REPORTS STATE THAT HE FIRED HIS HANDGUN 5-7 TIMES. HE WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING ATTEMPTED MURDER.

CLEARLAKE LEVEL UP, BOAT RAMPS REOPEN (EVR) JB 12/16/14

THANKS TO THE RECENT STORMS, THE WATER LEVEL IN CLEAR LAKE IS ON THE RISE AND SEVERAL BOAT RAMPS HAVE REOPENED.

THE WATER LEVEL IN CLEAR LAKE HAS RISEN BY MORE THAN A FOOT ON THE RUMSEY GAUGE IN THE LAST WEEK AND PREDICTIONS ARE THAT THE LAKE WILL HIT THE TWO FOOT MARK EARLY THIS WEEK. STREAMS FLOWING INTO THE LAKE WERE REPORTED TO BE RUNNING FROM BANK TO BANK. THE BOAT RAMPS AT LAKESIDE COUNTY PARK AND AT CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK HAVE BOTH REOPENED AND BOATERS ARE BEING URGED TO USE CAUTION DUE TO DEBRIS BEING WASHED INTO THE LAKE INCLUDING TREES, LOGS, BARRELS, AND DOCK PARTS.
