CONCERNS GROWING OVER PALACE HOTEL (GOV/PI) JB 1/5/15

ON WEDNESDAY, THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL IS EXPECTED TO GET AN UPDATE ON THE PROGRESS, OR LACK THERE OF, ON THE PALACE HOTEL RENOVATION PROJECT.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT AS OF DECEMBER 29, THE CITY PLANNING DIRECTOR SAID THE PERMITS REQUIRED FOR THE WORK HAD STILL NOT BEEN APPLIED FOR, AND THAT HE HAD NO FURTHER CONTACT WITH BUILDING OWNER, ELADIA LAINES, OR BLUEWATER ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, THE FIRM SHE SUPPOSEDLY HIRED TO REMOVE ASBESTOS FROM THE BUILDING. THE BUILDING IS STILL NOT PROTECTED FROM RAIN OR ILLEGAL ENTRY AND ADHERENCE BY THE OWNER TO THE COMPLIANCE SCHEDULE APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL IN AUGUST HAS BEEN MARGINAL.

THREE INJURED IN CRASH NORTH OF UKIAH (LAW) JB 1/5/15

THREE PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN A VEHICLE CRASH ON FRIDAY JUST OUTSIDE UKIAH.

THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN FRONT OF THE SUNSET VIEW ESTATES MOBILE HOME PARK ON NORTH STATE STREET WHEN A DOGE NEON WAS STRUCK AT FULL SPEED BY A LINCOLN TOWNCAR. THE DRIVER OF THE NEON WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN WHEN IT WAS STRUCK BY THE TOWNCAR, INJURING TWO ADULTS AND A CHILD. ALL INJURIES WERE REPORTED AS NON-LIFE THREATENING AND THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS BEING INVESTIGATED.

LAKEPORT GARAGE DAMAGED BY FRIDAY FIRE (LAW) JB 1/5/15

A GARAGE IN LAKEPORT WAS DAMAGED DURING A FIRE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

LAKEPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE BLAZE THAT WAS FIRST REPORTED AT AN ADDRESS ON POLK STREET JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT FRIDAY MORNING. A PILE OF OBJECTS JUST INSIDE THE GARAGE WAS BURNING WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AND BLAZE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL WITHIN 30 MINUTES. THE GARAGE ITSELF SUFFERED MINIMAL DAMAGE FROM THE BLAZE HOWEVER SMOKE FROM THE FIRE REPORTEDLY DAMAGED A NEARBY HOME. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY FIRE AUTHORITIES.

COVERED CALIFORNIA ENROLLMENT OPEN NOW (PI) JB 1/5/15

COVERED CALIFORNIA INSURANCE OPEN ENROLLMENT HAS BEGUN ACROSS THE STATE.

FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE, NOW IS THE TIME TO SIGN UP FOR COVERED CALIFORNIA, ALSO KNOWN AS THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, WITH OPEN ENROLLMENT BEING MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH FEBRUARY 15. AFTER FEBRUARY 15, THOSE WITHOUT INSURANCE MUST HAVE A QUALIFYING EVENT, SUCH AS PREGNANCY, TO SIGN UP FOR COVERED CALIFORNIA COVERAGE. UNINSURED CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPEN ENROLLMENT AS THE GOVERNMENT WILL BEGIN ASSESSING FINES TO THOSE WITHOUT HEALTH CARE COVERAGE IN 2015.

CLAIM FILED OVER MENDOCINO INMATE DEATH (LAW) JB 1/5/15

A CLAIM HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST MENDOCINO COUNTY IN THE DEATH OF A COUNTY INMATE IN JUNE

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE FAMILY OF FORMER MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL INMATE, STEVEN KELLOG NEUROTH, WHO DIED IN CUSTODY ON JUNE 11, HAS FILED A CLAIM AGAINST THE COUNTY ALLEGING WRONGFUL DEATH BY ASPHYXIATION AND OTHER CONTRIBUTING INJURIES. THE CLAIM ALSO REPORTEDLY STATES THAT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE ATTEMPTED TO COVER UP THE INCIDENT. AN ATTORNEY FOR THE FAMILY IS SEEKING PUNITIVE DAMAGES AS WELL AS A DEMAND FOR PRESERVATION OF EVIDENCE, WITH A REQUEST FOR ALL RECORDS, PHOTOGRAPHS, STATEMENTS, AND OTHER REPORTS RELATED TO THE INMATES DEATH TO BE TURNED OVER. THE CLAIM IS ON THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS SCHEDULE FOR THIS TUESDAY.

YUBA COLLEGE DAMAGED WITH GRAFFITI (LAW) JB 1/5/15

YUBA COLLEGES CLEAR LAKE CAMPUS WAS DAMAGED BY GRAFFITI AT THE SAME TIME SIMILAR VANDALISM OCCURRED AT THE CLEARLAKE COURTHOUSE.

ON THE SAME NIGHT THAT THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF THE CLEARLAKE COURTHOUSE WAS TAGGED, A SIMILAR INCIDENT OCCURRED AT THE CLEAR LAKE CAMPUS OF YUBA COLLEGE WITH GRAFFITI DAMAGE REPORTED ON A SECTION OF THE LIBRARY WALL AND A NEARBY STAIRCASE. THE DAMAGE TO THE COLLEGE WAS REPORTED TO THE YUBA COLLEGE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND REPAIRS WERE MADE THE SAME DAY IT WAS DISCOVERED. OFFICIALS HAVE NOT REPORTED IF THEY BELIEVE THE TWO INCIDENTS ARE CONNECTED.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOMELESS COUNT (PI) JB 1/5/15

AS PART OF A PROGRAM TO RECEIVE FEDERAL FUNDING, VOLUNTEERS ARE BEING REQUESTED TO COUNT THE HOMELESS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

A COUNTY WIDE EFFORT TO COUNT THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY WILL TAKE PLACE ON JANUARY 22 AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY. THE COUNT IS PART OF A FEDERAL HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AIMED AT SETTING FEDERAL FUNDING TO SUPPORT THE NEEDS OF THE AREA HOMELESS. TEAMS WILL START IN WILLITS, UKIAH AND FORT BRAGG. THOSE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE SURVEY SHOULD CALL 463-5462 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

ELECTED OFFICIALS TO BE SWORN IN TUESDAY (GOV) JB 1/5/15

THE NEWLY AND RE-ELECTED OFFICIALS OF MENDOCINO COUNTY WILL BE OFFICIALLY SWORN IN THIS WEEK.

TUESDAYS MEETING OF THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL BEGIN WITH THE SWEARING IN OF NEW 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR TOM WOODHOUSE, AS WELL AS RE-ELECTED 5TH DISTRICT SUPERVISOR DAN HAMBURG. OTHER COUNTY OFFICIALS RETURNING TO THEIR POSITIONS FOR NEW TERMS INCLUDE SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN, DISTRICT ATTORNEY DAVID EYSTER, AND TREASURER AND TAX COLLECTOR SHARI SHAPMIRE. NEWLY-ELECTED WARREN GALLETTI WILL TAKE HIS PLACE AS THE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.
