GOV BROWN TOUGHENS CLIMATE CHANGE GOALS (GOV/EVR) JB 1/6/15

GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN IS SET TOUGHEN THE STATES GOALS TO REDUCE CLIMATE CHANGE IN CALIFORNIA.

AS HE WAS SWORN IN FOR A RECORD FOURTH TERM, GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN CHARTED AN AMBITIOUS NEW GOAL ON MONDAY FOR CALIFORNIA IN ITS FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE, CHALLENGING THE NATIONS MOST POPULOUS STATE TO INCREASE RENEWABLE ENERGY USE TO 50 PERCENT IN THE NEXT 15 YEARS. THE GOVERNOR SPECIFICALLY CALLED FOR THE STATE TO INCREASE RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY SOURCES, REDUCE PETROLEUM USE IN VEHICLES, DOUBLE THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF BUILDINGS AND MAKE HEATING FUELS CLEANER BY 2030. THE CURRENT STATE GOAL CALLS FOR 33 PERCENT OF ENERGY USE TO COME FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES BY THE YEAR 2020.

STOLEN BIKE SPOTTED BY LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF-ELECT (LAW) JB 1/6/15

A LAKEPORT TRANSIENT WAS APPREHENDED AFTER SHERIFF-ELECT BRIAN MARTIN SPOTTED HIM RIDING A STOLEN BICYCLE.

LAKEPORT POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO THE REGENCY INN MOTEL IN LAKEPORT ON SATURDAY TO THE REPORT BY MARTIN THAT HE HAD SEEN 41 YEAR OLD EUGENE HARDING WITH A $5,600 SPECIALIZED RACING BIKE THAT HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN EARLIER IN THE DAY. OFFICERS LOCATED HARDING IN ONE OF THE MOTEL ROOMS AND HE ADMITTED TO STEALING THE BICYCLE FROM IN FRONT OF MAIN STREET BICYCLES. DURING A SEARCH, OFFICERS ALSO LOCATED METHAMPHETAMINE AND HARDING WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

CLEAR LAKE KAYAKER STILL MISSING (LAW) JB 1/6/15

A MISSING PERSONS REPORT HAS BEEN FILED FOR A MISSING LUCERNE MAN WHO FAILED TO RETURN FROM KAYAKING ON CLEAR LAKE LAST WEEK.

68-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL BELHUMEUR, AN EXPERIENCED KAYAKER, WAS ORIGINALLY REPORTED MISSING LAST TUESDAY AFTER LEAVING FOR HIS DAILY KAYAK TRIP ON CLEAR LAKE NEAR SANDY BEACH TRAILER PARK IN ROUGH WINDY CONDITIONS. A SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM RECOVERED BELHUMEURS KAYAK, PADDLE AND LIFE JACKET ON WEDNESDAY NEAR THE BEACH AT CEAGO WINERY. SEARCH EFFORTS CONTINUE AND ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT BELHUMEUR SHOULD CALL THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE AT 262-4200.

CALIFORNIA FLU SEASON SPORADIC SO FAR (PI) JB 1/6/15

DESPITE PREDICTIONS OF A POTENTIALLY SEVERE FLU SEASON IN CALIFORNIA, ONLY SPORADIC FLU ACTIVITY HAS BEEN REPORTED ACROSS THE STATE SO FAR.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT A PHYSICIAN AT THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER STATED THAT HE HAS SEEN ONLY A FEW CASES OF FLU THIS SEASON, WITH MOST OF THE CASES REPORTED IN MID-JANUARY IN THE UKIAH AREA. EVEN THOUGH THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION RECOMMEND GETTING THE FLU VACCINATION AS EARLY AS OCTOBER, IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO GET THE ANNUAL VACCINE. EXPECTATIONS SHOULD BE TEMPERED THOUGH SINCE IT CAN TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS FOR THE VACCINE TO TAKE EFFECT.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE CLOSING FOR 52 HOURS (TR) JB 1/6/15

A LONG-AWAITED PROJECT AIMED TO MAKE THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE SAFER IS SET TO CLOSE THE ICONIC SPAN FOR 52 HOURS.

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT REPORTED THAT THIS WEEKENDS CLOSURE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A MOVEABLE MEDIAN BARRIER IS THE LONGEST CLOSURE IN THE BRIDGES 77 YEAR HISTORY AND COULD CAUSE HEADACHES FOR THE NEARLY 110,000 DAILY DRIVERS THAT NORMALLY USE THE BRIDGE TO TRAVEL TO SAN FRANCISCO. THE BRIDGE WILL CLOSE JUST PAST MIDNIGHT ON SATURDAY AS CREWS WILL WORK AROUND THE CLOCK TO INSTALL 3,200 STEEL AND CONCRETE BARRIER SEGMENTS. THE BRIDGE IS EXPECTED TO REOPEN AT 4 AM ON MONDAY, JANUARY 12.

ONE DEAD IN CLEARLAKE OAKS MOTEL FIRE (LAW) JB 1/6/15

ONE PERSON DIED AND DOZENS OF OTHERS WERE DISPLACED AFTER A SUNDAY AFTERNOON FIRE AT A CLEARLAKE OAKS MOTEL.

NORTHSHORE, LAKEPORT, KELSEYVILLE, SOUTH LAKE, AND CAL FIRE PERSONNEL ALL RESPONDED TO THE FIRE AT THE LAKE HAVEN MOTEL AROUND 1:30 PM SUNDAY. FIREFIGHTERS DISCOVERED ONE BODY DURING THEIR EFFORTS TO PUT OUT THE BLAZE, BUT IT IS UNKNOWN IF THE VICTIM DIED AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE FIRE. FIRE OFFICIALS ESTIMATED THAT, WITH THE BUILDING BEING SHUT DOWN, APPROXIMATELY 30 PEOPLE HAD BEEN DISPLACED BY THE BLAZE AND RED CROSS PERSONNEL WERE ON SCENE TO ASSIST WITH HELPING TO PROVIDE TEMPORARY HOUSING.

CANCER DEATHS DROPPING ACROSS THE NATION (PI) JB 1/6/15

MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION CANCER DEATHS HAVE BEEN AVERTED DURING TWO DECADES OF DROPPING MORTALITY FROM THE DISEASE.

THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS RELEASED ITS LATEST REPORT OF CANCER STATISTICS IN THE NATION. THE REPORT FINDS THAT A 22 PERCENT DROP IN CANCER DEATHS OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES HAS LED TO THE AVOIDANCE OF MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION CANCER DEATHS THAT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF PEAK RATES HAD CONTINUED. THE STEADY DECLINE SINCE THE EARLY 90S IS ATTRIBUTED TO FEWER PEOPLE SMOKING AS WELL AS ADVANCES IN CANCER PREVENTION, EARLY DETECTION AND TREATMENT.

PIETA CREEK AREA CONTROL BURN SCHEDULED (LAW) JB 1/6/15

THERE IS A CONTROL BURN SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN THE PIETA CREEK AREA IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

AT NOON TODAY, CAL FIRE MENDOCINO UNIT WILL BE CONDUCTING A VEGETATION MANAGEMENT CONTROL BURN ON PRIVATELY-OWNED LAND IN THE PIETA CREEK WATERSHED IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF MENDOCINO COUNTY. THE GOAL OF THE BURN IS IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITATS AND REDUCE FUEL LOADING IN THE AREA TO DECREASE THE CHANCE OF CATASTROPHIC WILDFIRES IN THE FUTURE. THIS PROJECT BURN WILL BE CONDUCTED UNDER STRICTLY CONTROLLED WEATHER AND FUEL CONDITIONS.
