UUSD DISCOVERS $90K EMBEZZLED FROM ADULT SCHOOL (ED) JB 1/13/15

THE UKIAH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS DISCOVERED THAT $90,000 WAS EMBEZZLED FROM THE UKIAH ADULT SCHOOL PROGRAM.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED MONDAY THAT AN EMPLOYEE OF THE DISTRICT EMBEZZLED $30,000 A YEAR FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. THE SUSPECT EMPLOYEE IS NOT BEING NAMED, NOR WILL THEY BE PROSECUTED, DUE TO A LACK OF EVIDENCE TO MAKE THE EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES STICK. THE PROBLEM STEMMED FROM THE ADULT SCHOOLS ACCEPTANCE OF CASH PAYMENTS FOR TUITION AND THE LACK OF A DOUBLE-COUNTING SYSTEM TO CHECK EMPLOYEE BOOKKEEPING RECORDS. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL DISCUSS THE INVESTIGATION AT ITS MEETING THIS THURSDAY.

TODDLER FOUND WANDERING UKIAH STREET (LAW) JB 1/13/15

A TODDLER WAS FOUND WANDERING A UKIAH STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT EARLIER THIS MONTH.

UKIAH POLICE RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON EAST GOBBI STREET FOR A FOUND JUVENILE. OFFICERS LEARNED THE CALLER SAW A 2 TO 3 YEAR OLD CHILD WEARING PAJAMAS AND NO SHOES STANDING IN THE STREET NEAR WAUGH LANE AND GOBBI STREET. THE CALLER WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE CHILDS PARENTS AND CALLED THE POLICE. OFFICERS WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CHILDS RESIDENCE AND RELEASED THE CHILD TO THE CARE OF CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES. AT ABOUT 7:30 AM UKIAH POLICE WERE CONTACTED REGARDING A MISSING CHILD, AND DETERMINED THE CHILD HAD USED A CHAIR TO STAND ON AND UNLOCK THE DEADBOLT AND WALKED OUT OF THE RESIDENCE SHORTLY BEFORE BEING LOCATED IN THE STREET.

CLEARLAKE POLICE INVESTIGATE MINI-BIKE CRASH (LAW) JB 1/13/15

A CRASH IN CLEARLAKE BETWEEN A CAR AND A MINI-BIKE SENT ONE MAN TO A TRAUMA CENTER WITH MAJOR INJURIES.

CLEARLAKE POLICE AND LAKE COUNTY FIRE RESPONDED ON SUNDAY TO THE INTERSECTION OF MORGAN AND MANAKEE AVENUES TO THE REPORT OF A TRAFFIC COLLISION. THE DRIVER OF THE OFF-ROAD MINI-BIKE COLLIDED WITH A MERCEDES BENZ AFTER PULLING OUT OF A VACANT LOT INTO THE STREET, THROWING THE DRIVER INTO THE WINDSHIELD OF THE MERCEDES. THE MINI-BIKE DRIVER SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN THE CRASH TO HIS HEAD AND LEG AND WAS FLOWN BY REACH AIR AMBULANCE TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

CHINA STOPS BUYING CALIFORNIA WALNUTS (AG/ECN) JB 1/13/15

CHINA HAS STOPPED BUYING CALIFORNIA WALNUTS RECENTLY, BUT LOCAL GROWERS DONT SEEM TOO CONCERNED.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT IN RECENT MONTHS, CHINA HALTED PURCHASES OF CALIFORNIA WALNUTS, OPTING TO USE THEIR OWN CROPS WHICH WERE APPARENTLY PLENTIFUL THIS YEAR. IN THE PAST, CHINA HAS PLAYED A LARGE ROLE IN CALIFORNIA WALNUT SALES. LOCAL GROWERS ARE SHOWING LITTLE CONCERN OVER THE MARKET SHIFT, HOWEVER, CITING THAT BOTH JAPAN AND KOREA INCREASED THEIR PURCHASES OF CALIFORNIA-GROWN WALNUTS. ONE LAKE COUNTY WALNUT GROWER NOTED THAT BECAUSE HE SELLS TO DIAMOND FOODS, MARKET CHANGES SUCH AS THIS NEVER DIRECTLY AFFECT HIS CROP.

KAYAKER RESCUED OUTSIDE OF BODEGA BAY (LAW) JB 1/13/15

THE U.S. COAST GUARD RESCUED A KAYAKER IN DISTRESS MONDAY AFTERNOON JUST OUTSIDE OF BODEGA BAY.

ACCORDING TO COAST GUARD REPORTS, THE 60 YEAR OLD MAN WAS FISHING FOR CRAB APPROXIMATELY 100 YARDS OUTSIDE THE JETTY. HE BECAME FATIGUED AS HE ATTEMPTED TO RETURN TO SHORE, PADDLING AGAINST A 23 MILE AN HOUR HEADWIND AND WITNESSES COULD SEE THAT HE NEEDED HELP. A 47-FOOT COAST GUARD VESSEL WAS DISPATCHED TO RESCUE THE MAN AND HE WAS SUCCESSFULLY RETURNED TO SHORE. BOATERS ARE REMINDED TO ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER AND SWELL CONDITIONS BEFORE TAKING TO THE OCEAN WATERS.

CLEARLAKE OFFICERS RESPOND TO BURGLARY (LAW) JB 1/13/15

CLEARLAKE POLICE AND A K-9 OFFICER APPREHEND A SUSPECT DURING A RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY IN CLEARLAKE.

CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON YOLO ALLEY TO THE REPORT OF A POSSIBLE BURGLARY IN PROCESS. THE PROPERTY OWNER, WHO WAS AWAY AT THE TIME, NOTIFIED THE POLICE OF A BREAK IN BY A KNOWN FAMILY MEMBER AFTER BEING TIPPED BY A NEIGHBOR. CPD OFFICER TRAVIS LENZ AND HIS K-9 PARTNER DEX WERE FIRST ON THE SCENE AND CONTACTED THE SUSPECT, 28 YEAR OLD TRANSIENT STEVEN MICHAEL FULLER, TO EXIT THE HOME OR DEX WOULD BE DEPLOYED. FULLER FAILED TO RESPOND AND DEX WAS DEPLOYED, LOCATING FULLER HIDING IN A CLOSET. AFTER STRUGGLING WITH DEX AND OTHER OFFICERS, FULLER WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

POSTAL SERVICE STANDARDS SLOW FIRST CLASS MAIL (PI) JB 1/13/15

NEW U.S. POSTAL SERVICE STANDARDS TOOK EFFECT LAST WEEK THAT HAVE ADDED TIME TO DELIVERY SERVICE FOR FIRST-CLASS MAIL.

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT REPORTED THAT THE MOVE, WHICH NOW MAKES A FIRST-CLASS LETTER DELIVERY TAKE AN AVERAGE OF 2.1 DAYS INSTEAD OF 1.8 DAYS TO REACH ITS DESTINATION, COMES AS THE POSTAL SERVICE PLANS TO ELIMINATE 82 MAIL PROCESSING CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE NATION TO SAVE MONEY. WITH THE CLOSURE OF LOCAL PROCESSING CENTERS IN PETALUMA AND EUREKA, LOCAL FIRST-CLASS MAILINGS WILL BE ROUTED TO SAN FRANCISCO TO BE SORTED, THEN SENT BACK WHERE A LOCAL POSTAL WORKER ROUTES IT TO A LETTER CARRIER FOR DELIVERY. IN THE PAST, THAT LETTER WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN DELIVERED THE NEXT DAY.

BATHROOMS COMPLETED AT HOMELESS SHELTER (PI) JB 1/13/15

THE BATHROOM RENOVATION PROJECT AT THE BUDDY ELLER CENTER IS NOW COMPLETE AND THE CENTER IS READY TO GO.

THE RENOVATION PROJECT OF THE BATHROOMS AT THE WINTER SHELTER AT THE BUDDY ELLER CENTER WAS COMPLETED LAST FRIDAY, ALLOWING THE CENTER TO ACCOMMODATE ITS FULL CAPACITY OF 50 PEOPLE. PRIOR TO THAT, THE CENTER COULD ONLY ACCEPT UP TO 30 PEOPLE A NIGHT. THE BATHROOMS AT THE CENTER WERE IN NEED OF REPAIR FROM YEARS OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODING, MOLD AND GENERAL ABUSE. THE WINTER SHELTER WILL BE OPEN UNTIL APRIL 10.
