BOARD DOES NOT APPROVE TICHININ RAISE (GOV) JB 1/14/15

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION RECENTLY VOTED NOT TO APPROVE A RAISE FOR RETIRED SUPERINTENDENT PAUL TICHININ.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION ON MONDAY VOTED AGAINST GIVING RETIRED SUPERINTENDENT PAUL TICHININ ANOTHER ADDITION TO HIS ALREADY SUBSTANTIAL SALARY. TICHININ CURRENTLY MAKES MORE THAN $130,000, NOT INCLUDING BENEFITS, WHICH IS MORE THAN THE BASE SALARIES OF BOTH SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY DAVID EYSTER. ONE BOARD MEMBER WONDERED IF IT WERE ETHICAL TO APPROVE A RETROACTIVE RAISE SO MUCH HIGHER THAN THE RAISES APPROVED FOR THE TEACHERS, WIDENING THE GAP BETWEEN WHAT TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS GET PAID.

SONOMA COUNTY INMATE STILL AT LARGE (LAW) JB 1/14/15

AN INMATE FROM THE SONOMA COUNTY JAIL IS STILL ON THE RUN AFTER ESCAPING FROM A WORK CREW MONDAY MORNING.

38 YEAR OLD SONOMA COUNTY JAIL INMATE, MICHAEL BRANDON GENTUSO, FLED FROM A WORK CREW AROUND 8 AM MONDAY MORNING, JUMPING OUT OF VAN ON STEELE LANE NEAR CLEVELAND AVENUE. GENTUSO DITCHED HIS JAIL ISSUED DENIM JACKET AND ORANGE SAFETY VEST, WHICH WERE LOCATED BY AUTHORITIES. HE WAS LAST SEEN WEARING BLUE DENIM JAIL CLOTHING MARKED WITH NCDF ON THE BACK. GENTUSO, BELIEVED TO BE A SANTA ROSA TRANSIENT, WAS SERVING A 90-DAY SENTENCE FOR POSSESSION AND WAS SCHEDULED TO BE RELEASED ON APRIL 30.

CAL TRANS INCREASES ACCOUNTABILITY REFORMS (TR) JB 1/14/15

CAL TRANS HAS TAKEN BROAD MEASURES TO INCREASE ACCOUNTABILITY OF ITS EMPLOYEES ACROSS THE BOARD.

AS PART OF ITS ONGOING REFORM EFFORTS, INCLUDING INCREASED STATEWIDE ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY, CAL TRANS HAS PUBLISHED NEW MANAGER AND EMPLOYEE HANDBOOKS AND LAUNCHED A 24-HOUR ETHICS HOTLINE FOR ALL EMPLOYEES. THE NEW DEPARTMENT POLICIES COVER ISSUES SUCH AS HEALTH AND SAFETY, ETHICS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND OVERTIME. THE DEPARTMENT ALSO RELEASED AN UPDATED HIRING GUIDE INCLUDING MANDATORY PROCEDURES FOR CHECKING REFERENCES AND PERSONNEL DOCUMENTS DURING THE VETTING PROCESS.

YOSEMITE CLIMBERS NEARING THE TOP (PI) JB 1/14/15

TWO ROCK CLIMBERS IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK ARE NEARING THE TOP OF THEIR HISTORIC GOAL.

THE TWO CLIMBERS ATTEMPTING TO BE THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO FREE CLIMB ONE OF YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARKS SHEER GRANITE FACES ARE ALMOST AT THE SUMMIT. 30 YEAR OLD KEVIN JORGESON OF SANTA ROSA AND 36 YEAR OLD COLORADO RESIDENT TOMMY CALDWELL WILL MOST LIKELY COMPLETE THE REMAINING PITCH UP THE DAWN WALL ON EL CAPITAN WEDNESDAY EVENING. THE MEN HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO FREE CLIMB THE 3,000 SUMMIT WITHOUT ADDITIONAL CLIMBING AIDES FOR THE PAST 17 DAYS.

FT BRAGG GREEN ALLEYS PROJECT MEETING SCHEDULED (EVR) JB 1/14/15

A PUBLIC MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR FORT BRAGGS GREEN ALLEYS PROJECT.

THE CITY OF FORT BRAGG AND THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD WILL BE HOLDING AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON THE CITYS GREEN ALLEYS LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT. THE CITY RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD FOR THE GREEN ALLEYS PROJECT TO DEMONSTRATE THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF LOW IMPACT DEVELOPMENT ON STORM WATER QUALITY WHILE REDUCING THE COSTS OF CONVENTIONAL STORM WATER INFRASTRUCTURE SUCH AS CURBS AND GUTTERS. THE PUBLIC MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 22, AT 11 AM AT FORT BRAGG CITY HALL.

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR IN UKIAH NEAR BE-BOPS (LAW) JB 1/14/15

A PEDESTRIAN IN THE CROSSWALK WAS STRUCK BY A CAR ON TUESDAY NEAR BE-BOPS DINER.

UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS AND UKIAH VALLEY FIRE AUTHORITY PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH STATE STREET AND WASHINGTON AVENUE TUESDAY AFTERNOON TO THE REPORT OF THE ACCIDENT. A WITNESS AT THE SCENE STATED THAT THE VICTIM, WHO WAS IN THE CROSSWALK AT THE TIME, WAS STRUCK BY SILVER DODGE HATCHBACK AND THEN LANDED ON THE ROAD ON HIS HEAD. THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE AND THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY AUTHORITIES.

MORE INMATES RELEASED UNDER PROPOSITION 47 (LAW) JB 1/14/15

SINCE THE PASSING OF PROPOSITION 47 LAST NOVEMBER, AT LEAST 65 INMATES FROM THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL HAVE BEEN RELEASED.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT SINCE THE MEASURE WAS PROPOSED, LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE OFFICIALS ACROSS THE STATE WARNED OF THE LAWS IMPLICATIONS. OPPONENTS CLAIM THE LAWS TITLE AS THE SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD AND SCHOOLS ACT WAS MISLEADING AS THE LAW GRANTS THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF CRIMINALS IN SOME CASES AND DOES NOT MANDATE A CRIMINAL ATTEND ANY REHABILITATION PROGRAMS OR BE SUPERVISED UNDER PROBATION AFTER THEIR RELEASE. SUSPECTS OF THEFT FROM OPEN BUSINESSES AND OF POSSESSION OF NARCOTICS ARE NOW CITED INSTEAD OF ARRESTED.

DECEMBER STORM AS LITTLE EFFECT ON WELLS (EVR) JB 1/14/15

DESPITE THE SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF RAIN RECEIVED IN DECEMBER, IT HAS SHOWN LITTLE OR NO EFFECT TO WELL LEVELS IN LAKE COUNTY.

LAKE COUNTY SPECIAL DISTRICTS REPORTED THAT A MAJORITY OF THEIR WATER SYSTEMS ARE STILL UNDER MANDATORY OR VOLUNTARY CONSERVATION ORDERS DUE TO THE THREE YEARS OF DROUGHT AND DRY WEATHER BEFORE DECEMBERS HEAVY RAINS. ONLY 2 OF THE 10 SYSTEMS MANAGED BY LAKE COUNTY SPECIAL DISTRICTS HAVE SHOWN A DECREASE IN THEIR WATER URGENCY LEVEL. WHILE THE AREA DID RECEIVE HIGHER THAN AVERAGE RAINFALL TOTALS, MOST OF THE WATER RAN OFF AND HAD NO EFFECT ON THE WATER TABLES.
