BOMB THREAT AT CLEAR LAKE HIGH SCHOOL (LAW) JB 1/16/15

SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES AND A THREAT TO SHOOT UP AND BOMB CLEAR LAKE HIGH SCHOOL LEAD TO THE ARREST OF TWO LAKE COUNTY TEENS.

LAKEPORT POLICE WERE DISPATCHED TO CLEAR LAKE HIGH SCHOOL WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON TO INVESTIGATE TWO CALLS FROM A CALLER THREATENING TO COME TO THE SCHOOL WITH AN UZI FIREARM AND DROP CHEMICALS AND BOMBS ON THE SCHOOL. INVESTIGATORS FOUND THE PHONE NUMBER TO BE A SKYPE DEFAULT NUMBER WITH NO ATTACHED USER. POLICE WERE AGAIN DISPATCHED TO THE HIGH SCHOOL LATER IN THE EVENING WHEN A SUBJECT WAS SEEN ACTING SUSPICIOUSLY AROUND THE MARGE ALAKSZY CENTER. THREE BOXES SUSPICIOUSLY WRAPPED WITH PLASTIC AND DUCT TAPE WERE LOCATED AND THE CAMPUS WAS CLEARED AS POLICE WAITED FOR THE BOMB SQUAD. THE PACKAGES WERE DETERMINED TO BE INERT AND EVIDENCE INSIDE THE BOXES IDENTIFIED A LAKEPORT MALE JUVENILE AS THE SUSPECT. AFTER OBTAINING A SEARCH WARRANT, TWO 17-YEAR-OLD BROTHERS FROM LAKEPORT WERE ARRESTED WHEN EVIDENCE LINKING THEM TO THE PACKAGES AND CALLS WAS FOUND AT THEIR RESIDENCE. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT THREE OR MORE SCHOOLS IN CALIFORNIA AND WASHINGTON RECEIVED BOMB THREAT CALLS FROM THE SAME SKYPE NUMBER ON THE SAME DAY AND THE INCIDENTS ARE CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY HAS RELEASED ITS ANNUAL REPORT FOR TOXIC RELEASES IN THE COUNTRY.

THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY ON WEDNESDAY RELEASED ITS ANNUAL TOXIC RELEASES INVENTORY, OR TRI, REPORT FOR 2013. THE REPORT SHOWS THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE CHEMICALS DEEMED TOXIC THAT IS MANAGED AT INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES IN THE COUNTRY WERE NOT RELEASED INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. ACROSS THE NATION IN 2013, 26 BILLION POUNDS OF TOXIC CHEMICALS WERE REPORTED WITH 84 PERCENT OF THEM BEING MANAGED THROUGH PROCEDURES SUCH AS RECYCLING. IN MENDOCINO COUNTY, ONLY 15 POUNDS WERE RELEASED INTO THE ENVIRONMENT.

FORT BRAGG COUNCIL APPROVES HOMELESS CENTER (GOV) JB 1/16/15

THE FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED THE CONVERSION OF A FORMER HOTEL INTO A NEW HOMELESS CENTER.

THE FORT BRAGG ADVOCATE REPORTED THAT THE FORT BRAGG CITY COUNCIL MADE A CONTROVERSIAL DECISION THIS WEEK TO ALLOCATE FUNDS FOR THE USE OF THE FORMER OLD COAST HOTEL BUILDING AS A TRANSITIONAL HOUSING AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS. THE RESOLUTION APPROVING THE USE OF A $1.2 MILLION COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT FOR THE PURCHASE AND REFURBISHING OF THE BUILDING WAS ADOPTED IN FRONT OF A PACKED HOUSE WITH DIFFERING OPINIONS ON THE MATTER. THE RESOLUTION PASSED WITH THREE OF THE FIVE COUNCIL MEMBERS VOTING FAVOR.

ESCAPED JAIL INMATE FOUND AT HOMELESS CAMP (LAW) JB 1/16/15

A SONOMA COUNTY JAIL INMATE WHO ESCAPED A WORK CREW ON MONDAY HAS BEEN LOCATED AND RETURNED TO JAIL.

38 YEAR OLD MICHAEL GENTUSO, WHO FLED A VAN CARRYING A JAIL WORK CREW, WAS LOCATED LATE WEDNESDAY AT A HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT NEAR ROHNERT PARK. THE MINIMUM-SECURITY INMATE WAS SERVING A 90-DAY SENTENCE AFTER BEING ARRESTED IN LATE DECEMBER ON A DRUG POSSESSION CHARGE. IT HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED HOW MUCH ADDITIONAL JAIL TIME GENTUSO WILL RECEIVE FOR HIS ESCAPE.

ELLIES MUTT HUT WANTS TO REMOVE PARKING SPOT (PI) JB 1/16/15

A POPULAR EATERY IN UKIAH IS LOOKING TO REMOVE A PARKING SPACE TO EXPAND ITS OUTDOOR DINING AREA.

THE OWNER OF ELLIES MUTT HUT HAS MADE A REQUEST TO THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL THAT A SECTION OF CURB IN FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT BE DECLARED AS A NO PARKING ZONE FOR A PROPOSED EXPANSION TO THEIR OUTDOOR DINING PATIO. IF THE CURB WERE DESIGNATED AS A NO-PARKING ZONE, IT WOULD REMOVE 23 FEET OF PARKING SPACES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE TO CUSTOMERS. THE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING COMMITTEE HAS ALREADY REVIEWED AND APPROVED THE REQUEST AND THE CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER THE REQUEST AT ITS NEXT MEETING ON JANUARY 21.

MIDDLETOWN ARCHERY LOOKING FOR ASSISTANCE (PI) JB 1/16/15

A LAKE COUNTY NON-PROFIT ARCHERY RANGE IS LOOKING FOR SOME ASSISTANCE TO MAKE NEEDED REPAIRS.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT MID-DECEMBERS STORMS TOOK AIM AT THREE OF MIDDLETOWN ARCHERY RANGES MAIN TARGETS AND DONATIONS OF TIME AND SUPPLIES ARE BEING SOUGHT BY THE NON-PROFIT TO BRING THE FIELD BACK UP TO PROPER CONDITION. RANGE OWNER STEVE LEONARDI, WHO OPERATES THE RANGE COMPLETELY ON A DONATION BASIS, SAID HE NEEDS THE MAN AND WOMAN POWER TO HELP WITH TEARING DOWN THE OLD TARGETS AND BEGINNING CONSTRUCTION ON NEW ONES, AS WELL AS DONATIONS OF HAY BALES, 2 BY 4S AND SCREWS TO BUILD THE TARGETS. FIVE NEW DEPUTIES SWORN IN FOR LAKE COUNTY (LAW) JB 1/16/15

FIVE NEW LAKE COUNTY DEPUTIES WERE SWORN IN FOR DUTY THIS WEEK.

LAKE COUNTYS NEW SHERIFF, BRIAN MARTIN, INTRODUCED FIVE NEW DEPUTIES TO COUNTY AT A SWEARING-IN CEREMONY TUESDAY MORNING. THE CEREMONIAL OCCASION INCLUDED NEW DEPUTIES JASON KORAN, JASON PISARO, VICTOR RICO, SHAMUS STAFFORD AND STEPHEN TONG TAKING THEIR OATHS. SHERIFF MARTIN APPLAUDED THE EFFORTS OF EACH OF THE MEN TO BECOME DEPUTIES, POINTING OUT THE ASPECTS THAT CHALLENGE AN INDIVIDUAL TO SUCCESSFULLY MAKE IT INTO LAW ENFORCEMENT.
