PREP WORK STARTING AT PALACE HOTEL (PI) JB 1/21/15

WORKERS BEGAN PREPARING THE PALACE HOTEL FOR ASBESTOS REMOVAL ON THE EVE OF A VOTE BY THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL ON THE FATE OF THE BUILDING.

WORKERS FROM BLUEWATER ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES WERE SEEN DOING SITE PREPARATION AT THE PALACE HOTEL YESTERDAY, READYING THE BUILDING FOR LONG AWAITED ASBESTOS REMOVAL. NO PERMITS HAVE BEEN FILED FOR THE REMOVAL AS OF YET AND THE OWNER OF THE BUILDING HAS STILL SHOWN NO PROOF TO THE CITY COUNCIL THAT SHE CAN PAY BLUEWATER FOR THE PROPOSED WORK, DESPITE REPEATED REQUESTS FOR BOTH. THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL VOTE TONIGHT AS TO WHETHER CONTROL OF THE RENOVATION PROJECT WILL BE TURNED OVER TO A RECEIVER.

HOME INVASION SUSPECTS APPEAR IN COURT (LAW) 1/21/15

THREE MEN SUSPECTED OF COMMITTING A HOME INVASION ROBBERY IN REDWOOD VALLEY WERE DUE TO APPEAR IN COURT THIS WEEK.

21-YEAR-OLD MARK PAPILLION, 19 YEAR OLD NATHAN ZINGARELLI AND 19 YEAR OLD CALVIN BAUSLEY WERE SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT YESTERDAY FOR THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN A SEPTEMBER HOME INVASION ROBBERY ON EAST ROAD. ATTORNEYS FOR THE THREE MEN MADE A REQUEST FOR A CONTINUANCE, STATING THAT THEY WERENT ADEQUATELY PREPARED TO BEGIN BECAUSE OF THE LARGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION INVOLVED IN THE CASE. THE JUDGE GRANTED THE CONTINUANCE AND THE THREE MEN ARE DUE BACK IN COURT ON FEBRUARY 2.

SCHOOL BUS HITS HOME AND PROPANE TANK (LAW) JB 1/21/15

A SCHOOL BUS LOST CONTROL YESTERDAY MORNING, STRIKING A HOME AND A RESIDENTIAL PROPANE TANK.

ACCORDING TO CHP REPORTS, THE SCHOOL BUS WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND ON EASTSIDE CALPELLA ROAD YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN THE DRIVER FAILED TO SAFELY NEGOTIATE A LEFT CURVE IN THE ROAD, SENDING THE BUS INTO A DRAINAGE DITCH. THE DRIVER OVER-CORRECTED, CROSSING BOTH LANES AND CRASHING THROUGH A FENCE OF A HOME. THE BUS STRUCK THE HOME AND KNOCKED OVER THE RESIDENTS PROPANE TANK, CAUSING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS GAS LEAK. THE DRIVER AND HER 10 YEAR OLD PASSENGER EXITED THE BUS SAFELY AND SEEMINGLY UNHURT BUT WERE TRANSPORTED TO UVMC AS A PRECAUTION.

WARM WEATHER CLOSES TWO CALIFORNIA SKI RESORTS (EVR) JB 1/21/15

TWO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SKI RESORTS HAVE SHUT DOWN MID SEASON DUE TO A LACK OF FRESH SNOW FALL ON THEIR SLOPES.

DESPITE A SPIKE IN RAIN AND SNOWFALL IN DECEMBER, THE FAILURE OF CONTINUED PRECIPITATION HAS FORCED THE CLOSURE OF BOTH DODGE RIDGE AND BADGER PASS SKI RESORTS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SKI SEASON. OPERATORS OF THE RESORTS STATE THAT THEY WILL REOPEN AFTER THE NEXT BIG SNOWSTORM HITS. FORECASTERS SAY WET WEATHER MAY COME EARLY NEXT WEEK, BUT WARM TEMPERATURES MAY ONLY SEND SNOW FALLING AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS ABOVE 9,500 FEET.

MENDOCINO BOS APPROVES MARIJUANA COMMITTEE (GOV) JB 1/21/15

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS MOVED AHEAD WITH THE CREATION OF A MARIJUANA COMMITTEE.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE CREATION OF A MARIJUANA AD HOC COMMITTEE ON TUESDAY. THE BOARD STRESSED THE TWO APPOINTED SUPERVISORS, 2ND DISTRICT SUPERVISOR JOHN MCCOWAN AND 3RD DISTRICT SUPERVISOR TOM WOODHOUSE WILL ONLY BE ENGAGED IN POTENTIAL ECONOMIC IMPACTS TO THE COUNTY AND NOT IN CREATING ANY LEGISLATION. THE GOAL OF THE COMMITTEE IS TO RESEARCH SUCH ECONOMIC IMPACTS WITH THE COUNTY IN MIND AND REPORT THEIR FINDINGS BACK TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

FORT BRAGG CONSIDERS NEW SHOPPING CENTER IMPACT (ECN) JB 1/21/15

THE FORT BRAGG PLANNING COMMISSION WILL DISCUSS THE IMPACTS OF A PROPOSED NEW SHOPPING OUTLET IN THE CITY.

THE PLANNING COMMISSION WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING TO REVIEW THE IMPACTS OF THE PLANNED HARE CREEK CENTER SHOPPING OUTLET, A NEARLY 30,000 SQUARE-FOOT PROPOSED SHOPPING CENTER LOCATED ON DEL MAR DRIVE AT TODD POINT. THE NEW CENTER WOULD HOUSE A GROCERY OUTLET STORE, FOUR OTHER RETAILERS AND A RESTAURANT, ALONG WITH A 99 SPACE PARKING LOT AND RAIN WATER STORAGE TANKS CAPABLE OF HOLDING 60,000 GALLONS TO BE USED FOR LANDSCAPE IRRIGATION. THE PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PLAN WILL BE HELD JANUARY 28 AT 6 PM AT THE JOHN DIEDERICH CENTER.

NEW EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO FIND A BUYER FOR THE KONOCTI HARBOR RESORT AND SPA.

A SIZEABLE PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN IS NOW UNDERWAY TO PROMOTE THE ONCE FLOURISHING DESTINATION RESORT BY KW COMMERCIAL, THE LARGEST REAL ESTATE FRANCHISE COMPANY IN NORTH AMERICA. AFTER CLOSING IN 2009, SEVERAL PREVIOUS EFFORTS TO SELL THE PROPERTY HAVE FALLEN THROUGH. THE 90-ACRE PROPERTY INCLUDES ITS 5,000 SEAT OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATER AND 1,000 SEAT SHOWROOM, AS WELL AS TWO OLYMPIC SIZED SWIMMING POOLS, NIGHTCLUB, AND CONVENTION FACILITIES.

THE CLEAR LAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCES NEW PRESIDENT HAS LAID OUT HIS GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE COMING YEAR.

NEW CHAMBER PRESIDENT PETE LOUSTALOT MET WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AT ITS FIRST MEETING OF 2015 LAST TUESDAY TO OUTLINE WHAT HE EXPECTS FOR THE NEW YEAR. THE NEW CHAMBER LEADER IS LOOKING FOR INCREASED MEMBERSHIP AND PARTICIPATION IN THE CHAMBER, NOTING THAT THERE ARE 458 BUSINESS LICENSE HOLDERS IN CLEARLAKE BUT ONLY 160 CHAMBER MEMBERS. THE CHAMBER WILL LOOK AT HIRING A NEW MANAGER TO AIDE IN INCREASING MEMBERSHIP AND A NEW PERMANENT HOME FOR THE CHAMBER ON LAKESHORE DRIVE IS ALSO IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
