INJURED SERVICE DOG IN NEED OF MEDICAL CARE (PI) JB 1/29/15

A HEROIC SERVICE DOG BELONGING TO A REDWOOD VALLEY MAN IS NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION AFTER BEING INJURED RESCUING HIS OWNER.

THE DOGS OWNER, TIM MILLER, SAID THAT HIS ROTTWEILER SPIKE SAVED HIS LIFE AFTER MILLER WAS ATTACKED AT HIS HOME ABOUT A MONTH AGO. MILLER SUFFERED A BROKEN LEG AFTER BEING RUN OVER BY A CAR IN THE ATTACK AND SPIKE, INJURED AS WELL, DRAGGED HIS OWNER OVER TO HIS HOUSE WHERE HE WAS ABLE TO CALL FOR HELP. MILLER SAID THAT HE CANT AFFORD THE MRI AND SURGERY SPIKE NEEDS, POSSIBLY COSTING UPWARDS OF $7,500. ANYONE WISHING TO HELP CAN DONATE TO FOR THE LOVE OF SPIKE AT THE ALEXANDER VALLEY HEALTH CENTER.

UKIAH BREWING COMPANY BEING REPLACED (PI) JB 1/29/15

THE UKIAH BREWING COMPANY HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS, SOON TO BE REPLACED WITH A NEW RESTAURANT.

THE WINDOWS ARE COVERED AND THE SIGN OVER THE DOOR IS GONE AT WHAT WAS THE UKIAH BREWING COMPANY, BUT THE BUILDING OWNER SAID THE NEW EATERY OPENING NEXT WEEK SHOULD BLOW PEOPLE AWAY. THE NEW RESTAURANT WILL SERVE AN ECLECTIC MENU THAT WILL CHANGE SEASONALLY WITH A FARM TO TABLE ATTITUDE, SOURCING FROM LOCAL FARMERS, RANCHERS AND FISHERMAN AND CRAFT BEER WILL CONTINUE TO BE BREWED ON-SITE. THE OPENING OF THE NEW EATERY IS PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY 5.

OBSERVATORY TELESCOPE RETURNS TO UKIAH (PI) JB 1/29/15

AFTER THREE DECADES, THE OBSERVATORY IN UKIAH NOW HAS ITS TELESCOPE BACK.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL, MORE THAN 30 YEARS AFTER IT WAS CONSIDERED OBSOLETE AND MOVED TO THE EAST COAST, A 116 YEAR OLD TELESCOPE MADE FOR THE UKIAH INTERNATIONAL LATITUDE OBSERVATORY RETURNED TO UKIAH THIS WEEK. THE TELESCOPE WAS BUILT IN 1899 AS ONE OF SIX CREATED FOR THE POLAR MOTION OBSERVATORIES LOCATED IN THE UNITED STATES, ITALY, UZBEKISTAN AND JAPAN. THE 280 POUND TELESCOPE IS ON LOAN TO UKIAH FOR ONE YEAR AND WILL BE THE FOCUS OF A SPECIAL EXHIBIT AT THE OBSERVATORY ON FEBRUARY 28 AND THEN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC EVERY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY STARTING MARCH 6.

MODERATE EARTHQUAKE HITS OF EUREKA COAST (EVR) JB 1/29/15

A MODERATE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK OFF THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE 5.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE WAS REPORTED AT 1:08 PM WEDNESDAY OFFSHORE APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES SOUTHWEST OF EUREKA. SHAKE REPORTS WERE CALLED IN FROM AS FAR AWAY AS RED BLUFF, 159 MILES TO THE EAST. THE HUMBOLDT COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE STATED THAT NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES WERE IMMEDIATELY REPORTED FOLLOWING THE TREMOR.

MACEDO APPROVED AS LAKE COUNTY UNDERSHERIFF (LAW) JB 1/29/15

THE LAKE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS APPROVED SHERIFF BRIAN MARTINS SELECTION FOR A PERMANENT UNDERSHERIFF.

THE BOARD GAVE ITS UNANIMOUS SUPPORT ON TUESDAY TO APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT OF CAPTAIN CHRIS MACEDO TO THE POSITION OF UNDERSHERIFF. THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION OFFICE HAD RECEIVED A HIRING WAIVER AND THE SUPPORT OF THE HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF CAPTAIN MACEDO. THE UNDERSHERIFF HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE GO-TO PERSON FOR COUNTY ADMINISTRATION PERSONNEL WHEN DEALING WITH THE SHERIFFS OFFICE DURING DIFFICULT SITUATIONS.

2014 LAKE COUNTY HOME PRICES INCREASE OVER 2013 (ECN) JB 1/29/15

A NEW REAL ESTATE REPORT SHOWS HOME SALE PRICES IN LAKE COUNTY INCREASED IN 2014.

THE LAKE COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS RECENTLY REPORTED OVER A TEN PERCENT INCREASE IN MEDIAN HOME SALES PRICES IN 2014 AS COMPARED TO TWO YEARS AGO. MEDIAN SALES PRICES IN LAKE COUNTY ROSE FROM $149,000 IN 2013 TO $169,000 IN 2014, AN INCREASE OF 13.4 PERCENT. FORECLOSURE SALES DROPPED FROM 40.5 PERCENT IN 2013 TO 26.4 PERCENT LAST YEAR. WHILE THE FORECLOSURE DROP IS SIGNIFICANT, IT IS STILL HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE OF 9.5 PERCENT.

WATER CURTAILMENTS LIKELY AS DROUGHT CONTINUES (EVR) JB 1/29/15

WITH THE LACK OF CONTINUED PRECIPITATION IN THE STATE, WATER CURTAILMENTS IN LAKE COUNTY ARE LIKELY AS THE DROUGHT CONTINUES.

THE RECORD BEE REPORTED THAT WITH AN EARLY SPRING SEASON PEEKING THROUGH GENERALLY SPARSE CLOUDS, IT APPEARS THE MID-DECEMBER DOWNPOUR IS NEARLY ALL LAKE COUNTYS RAINY SEASON COULD MUSTER. LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER DRY YEAR, THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD HAS ALREADY SENT A NOTICE TO WATER RIGHT HOLDERS EXPLAINING CURTAILMENTS COULD BE BROADER THIS YEAR. THE NOTICE URGES WATER RIGHT HOLDERS TO LOOK INTO ADDITIONAL CONSERVATION MEASURES AND ADDITIONAL WATER SUPPLIES AND PLANTING AND PLANNING DECISIONS SHOULD BE MADE IN LIGHT OF POSSIBLE CURTAILMENTS.

STATE CRAB TASK FORCE MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS (EVR) JB 1/29/15

CALIFORNIAS ADVISORY PANEL ON CRAB FISHING HAS RECOMMENDED A NUMBER OF CHANGES TO THE FISHERY IN A REPORT TO THE STATE LEGISLATURE.

FORMED ACCORDING TO A LAW IN 2008, THE CRAB ADVISORY PANEL IS DESIGNED TO HELP ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE FISHERIES IN CALIFORNIA. THE TASK FORCE IS RECOMMENDING A REVIEW OF THE TRAP LIMITS SET ON COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN THAT BEGAN IN 2010 TO REPORT ON ITS EFFECTIVENESS. THE GROUP WILL ALSO REVIEW WHETHER NEARLY 120 INACTIVE CRAB FISHING PERMITS SHOULD BE REACTIVATED. THE INACTIVE PERMITS MAKE UP APPROXIMATELY ONE FIFTH OF THE TOTAL COMMERCIAL CRAB FISHING PERMITS ALLOWED IN THE STATE.
