FOUNDATION TO RAISE MONEY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT (LAW) JB 2/3/15

A NEW FOUNDATION HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO RAISE PRIVATE DONATIONS TO SUPPORT MENDOCINO LAW ENFORCEMENT.

A DIVERSE GROUP OF MENDOCINO COUNTY RESIDENTS HAS INCORPORATED A NON-PROFIT CHARITABLE FOUNDATION TO RAISE FUNDS TO SUPPORT LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT. THE MENDOCINO PUBLIC SAFETY FOUNDATION PLANS TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE SHERIFF AND CITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS TO GET THE MOST IMPACT FROM PRIVATE ASSISTANCE. DONATIONS WILL BE PASSED ON AS GRANTS TO THE SHERIFF AND THE THREE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENTS TO PAY FOR CRITICAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES. SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN STATED THAT IT IS EXCITING TO KNOW THAT 100% OF ALL CONTRIBUTIONS WILL STAY RIGHT HERE IN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

VEHICLE VANDALIZED IN UKIAH LAST WEEK (LAW) JB 2/3/15

THREE AREA TEENS WERE ARRESTED TO VANDALIZING A CAR IN UKIAH LAST WEEK.

UKIAH POLICE OFFICERS RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON OBSERVATORY AVENUE AT ABOUT 1 AM AND FOUND THE VICTIM DETAINING A JUVENILE SUBJECT ON THE GROUND WITH TWO CHP OFFICERS HAVING DETAINED TWO OTHER JUVENILE SUSPECTS. OFFICERS DETERMINED THAT THE VICTIM WAS IN HIS RESIDENCE WHEN HE HEARD THE SUSPECTS KICKING AND HITTING HIS VEHICLE. THE VICTIM FOLLOWED THE GROUP IN ANOTHER VEHICLE DOWN OBSERVATORY AVENUE AND THE GROUP THEN SURROUNDED THAT VEHICLE, KICKING AND THROWING ROCKS AT IT. OFFICERS DETERMINED THAT BOTH VEHICLES SUSTAINED OVER $2,000 IN DAMAGE. ARRESTED AT THE SCENE WERE A 17 YEAR OLD UKIAH GIRL, AND TWO 15 YEAR OLD BOYS FROM HOPLAND AND REDWOOD VALLEY.

CLEARLAKE LOOKING TO BAN MARIJUANA GROWING (GOV) JB 2/3/15

THE CITY OF CLEARLAKE IS MOVING FORWARD TOWARD AN ALL-OUT BAN ON THE CULTIVATION OF MARIJUANA, MEDICINAL OR OTHERWISE.

ACCORDING TO THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS, THE CITY COUNCIL DIRECTED LEGAL STAFF TO DRAFT AN ORDINANCE THAT WOULD PROHIBIT THE GROWING OF ALL MARIJUANA WITHIN CITY LIMITS AND PROVIDE ABATEMENT OF CULTIVATION ACTIVITIES. THE CITY FINANCE DIRECTOR PROVIDED THE COUNCIL WITH A REPORT ON COSTS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT RELATED TO MARIJUANA ACTIVITIES. DURING A SEVEN MONTH PERIOD, IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT THE CITY SPENT $113,000 ON POLICE RESPONSE, INVESTIGATION, ADMINISTRATIVE AND COURT EXPENSES ON MARIJUANA RELATED CASES.

SONOMA STATE ROLLS OUT BAN ON ALL TOBACCO (ED) JB 2/3/15

SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS ROLLED OUT A BAN ON ALL TOBACCO PRODUCTS ON CAMPUS.

IN A MOVE THAT WILL MOST LIKELY BE FOLLOWED BY OTHER SCHOOLS AROUND THE STATE, SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS BECOME THE SECOND CAMPUS IN THE CSU SYSTEM TO ENFORCE A BAN ON SMOKING AND TOBACCO RELATED PRODUCTS. THE BAN INCLUDES THE USE OF SMOKELESS TOBACCO AND E-CIGARETTES AS WELL AS TRADITIONAL CIGARETTES. ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN NONSMOKERS RIGHTS FOUNDATION, MORE THAN 1,500 UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES HAVE SMOKE-FREE POLICIES ON CAMPUS, INCLUDING 27 SCHOOLS IN CALIFORNIA. THE COMPLETE BAN ON SMOKING AT SONOMA STATE WILL TAKE EFFECT ON JULY 1.

CLEARLAKE PARK HOME DESTROYED IN FIRE (LAW) JB 2/3/15

A FIRE MONDAY MORNING DESTROYED A HOME IN CLEARLAKE PARK.

LAKE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT PERSONNEL, AS WELL AS NORTHSHORE FIRE PROTECTION AND CAL FIRE ALL RESPONDED TO AN ADDRESS ON SECOND STREET IN CLEARLAKE PARK TO THE REPORT OF THE FIRE. THE DOUBLEWIDE MOBILE WAS FULLY INVOLVED WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE AND IT WAS APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS HAD THE BLAZE EXTINGUISHED. THE RESIDENTS OF THE HOME WERE SAFELY EVACUATED, HOWEVER THE STRUCTURE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED IN THE FIRE.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER THREATENING CHILD WITH KNIFE (LAW) JB 2/3/15

A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER THREATENING TO KILL AN 8 YEAR OLD CHILD WITH A KNIFE.

UKIAH POLICE RESPONDED TO THE SUNRISE INN LAST WEEK TO THE REPORT OF AN ASSAULT WITH A KNIFE. OFFICERS LEARNED THAT THE VICTIM WAS MOVING HIS 8 AND 12 YEAR OLD CHILDREN INTO A ROOM, A MAN IDENTIFIED AS 42 YEAR OLD BILLY JOE RICKMAN BEGAN CONVERSING WITH THEM. DURING THE MOVE, THE VICTIM REALIZED HIS CELL PHONE HAD BEEN STOLEN AND HE CONFRONTED RICKMAN ABOUT IT. WHEN THE VICTIMS 8 YEAR OLD SON YELLED AT RICKMAN TO RETURN THE PHONE, RICKMAN BECAME ENRAGED AND BRANDISHED A KNIFE, SLASHING THE TIRE ON THE VICTIMS VEHICLE AND THREATENING TO KILL THE CHILD. RICKMAN HAD FLED BEFORE POLICE ARRIVED BUT WAS SPOTTED SEVERAL DAYS LATER AND WAS APPREHENDED AT THE YOKAYO CENTER ON SOUTH STATE STREET. RICKMAN WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF SEVERAL KNIVES, SYRINGES AND METHAMPHETAMINE AND WAS ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES AND BOOKED WITH HIS BAIL SET AT $100,000.

ACCORDING TO A NEW REPORT, THE CHANCES OF DYING IN A CRASH IN A NEWER VEHICLE HAVE DROPPED BY MORE THAN 33 PERCENT IN 3 YEARS.

THE LATEST STUDY PUBLISHED BY THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY SHOWED THAT AMONG 2011 MODELS OF CARS, A RECORD NINE MODELS OF VEHICLES HAVE DRIVER MORTALITY RATES OF ZERO. TWO THIRDS OF THE TOP MODELS ARE SUVS, WHICH HAS CHANGED DRASTICALLY COMPARED TO A DECADE AGO WHEN SUVS HAD ONE OF THE HIGHEST MORTALITY RATES DUE TO ROLLOVER. NEW TECHNOLOGY AND THE ADVENT OF ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL HAS ALLOWED VEHICLES SUCH AS THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND THE LEXUS RX 350 TO BE LISTED AS SOME OF THE SAFEST CARS AVAILABLE.
