DUI SUSPECT ARRAIGNED ON 5 COUNTS OF ASSAULT (LAW) JB 2/5/15

THE UKIAH TEEN WHO RAN DOWN A GROUP OF CYCLISTS WITH HIS CAR WAS ARRAIGNED IN COURT ON WEDNESDAY.

18 YEAR OLD GABRIEL RAY APPEARED IN COURT YESTERDAY AND WAS ARRAIGNED ON FIVE COUNTS OF ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON, ONE FOR EACH VICTIM HE STRUCK, AND ONE COUNT OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE CAUSING GREAT BODILY INJURY. A DISTRICT ATTORNEY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT RAY DID NOT ENTER A PLEA TO THE NEW CHARGES AND HIS FAMILY WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO OR NOT TO HIRE A PRIVATE ATTORNEY AT HIS NEXT HEARING ON MONDAY. RAYS BAIL IN THE CASE HAS BEEN INCREASED FROM $30,000 TO $300,000.

REDWOOD VALLEY BOY STILL IN COMA AFTER CRASH (LAW) JB 2/5/15

THE REDWOOD VALLEY KINDERGARTNER INJURED IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT LAST MONTH IS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE CRASH.

THE 6 YEAR OLD CALPELLA STUDENT SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES WHEN THE CAR HE WAS RIDING IN STRUCK A BRIDGE ABUTMENT ON EASTSIDE CALPELLA ROAD NEAR HIGHWAY 20 ON JANUARY 15. THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE STATED THAT SHE HAD TO SWERVE OUT OF THE WAY OF A DARK COLORED CHEVY SUBURBAN THAT ENTERED HER LANE, CAUSING HER TO LOSE CONTROL OF HER VEHICLE. THE BOY WAS AIRLIFTED TO UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT WHERE HE IS REPORTEDLY STILL HOSPITALIZED IN A COMA.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL, THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY IS PLANNING A DISCUSSION AT FRIDAYS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING REGARDING RECENT ACTIVITY RELATED TO NEW INTERNET SPEED PROPOSALS BY THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION. LAST MONTH, THE FCC CHAIRMAN PROPOSED RAISING THE STANDARD FOR BROADBAND SPEEDS OFFERED BY INTERNET PROVIDERS FROM 4 MEGABITS PER SECOND TO 25 MEGABITS PER SECOND FOR DOWNLOADS AND FROM 1 TO 3 MEGABITS FOR UPLOADS. IF PASSED, THE PROPOSAL WOULD HELP PUSH INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS TO MAKE NEEDED REPAIRS TO RURAL COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS.

AMERICORPS NCCC TEAM WORKING IN MENDO COUNTY (EVR) JB 2/5/15

A TEAM OF YOUNG VOLUNTEERS HAS ARRIVED IN MENDOCINO COUNTY TO AIDE IN MAKING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE COUNTY.

A TEAM OF EIGHT AMERI-CORPS NATIONAL CIVILIAN CORPS MEMBERS ARE IN MENDOCINO COUNTY TO BEGIN WORK WITH THE CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS AND JUG HANDLE CREEK FARM AND NATURE CENTER. THE NCCC MEMBERS WILL COMPLETE A VARIETY OF TASKS INCLUDING INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL, TRANSPLANT OF NATIVE PLANTS, TRAIL WORK AND INFRASTRUCTURE REHABILITATION AND CONSTRUCTION. THE PLANNED WORK WILL NOT ONLY HELP THE PARKS ENVIRONMENTALLY, BUT RECREATIONALLY AS WELL, ALLOWING THEM TO THRIVE. THE GROUP WILL BE WORKING IN THE COUNTY UNTIL MARCH 19.

BEAR KILL CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST SHERIFFS WIFE (LAW) JB 2/5/15

A COURT CASE AGAINST THE WIFE OF A MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFF FOR KILLING BEARS OUTSIDE HER HOME HAS ENDED WITH THE CHARGES BEING DROPPED.

JENNIFER VAN WORMER WAS CHARGED WITH A MISDEMEANOR FOR A VIOLATING A FISH AND WILDLIFE CODE REGARDING THE KILLING OF FEMALE BEARS ACCOMPANIED BY CUBS. SHE ALLEGEDLY HAD SHOT TWO BEARS OUTSIDE HER RURAL FORT BRAGG HOME THAT WERE SHE CLAIMED WERE BECOMING INCREASINGLY AGGRESSIVE. DURING THE TRIAL, THE EVIDENCE PROVED INCONCLUSIVE THAT ONE OF THE BEARS WAS INDEED A CUB. THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY STATED THAT THE DISMISSAL OF THE CHARGES HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THE DEFENDANT IS MARRIED TO A DEPUTY SHERIFF.

CLEARLAKE HOME DAMAGED IN TUESDAY FIRE (LAW) JB 2/5/15

A CLEARLAKE HOME WAS SAVED FROM DESTRUCTION IN A FIRE WITH A QUICK RESPONSE FROM FIREFIGHTERS.

LAKE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO A MOBILE HOME ON EIGHTH STREET IN CLEARLAKE JUST BEFORE 2 PM ON TUESDAY. THE FIRE, WHICH HAD BEEN REPORTED IMMEDIATELY, WAS STOPPED WITHIN MINUTES OF THE FIREFIGHTERS QUICK ARRIVAL. THE MOBILE HOME WAS OCCUPIED AT THE TIME OF THE BLAZE, HOWEVER THE FAMILY WAS ABLE TO EVACUATE THE HOME WITHOUT INJURY AND DAMAGE TO THE HOME WAS CONTAINED TO A BACK BEDROOM. THIS IS THE SECOND HOME FIRE IN AS MANY DAYS IN THE AREA.

SICK SEA LIONS SHOWING UP ALL ALONG THE COAST (EVR) JB 2/5/15

A SURGE IN SICK SEA LIONS SHOWING UP ALONG THE CALIFORNIA COAST HAS ANIMAL RESCUE STAFF WORKING OVERTIME.

WORKERS AT THE MARINE MAMMAL CENTER IN THE MARIN HEADLANDS HAVE HAD THEIR HANDS FULL WITH A HUGE INFLUX OF SICK AND EMACIATED SEA LIONS, MOSTLY PUPS, BEING FOUND ALONG THE COAST. AT LEAST 108 CALIFORNIA SEA LIONS WERE RECEIVED AT THE REHABILITATION CENTER SO FAR THIS YEAR, COMPARED TO THE 10 THEY HAD LAST JANUARY. STATEWIDE, THERE WERE MORE THAN 250 SEA LION STRANDINGS BY THE END OF JANUARY. THE CAUSE FOR THE SUDDEN INCREASE IN THE ENFEEBLED SEA LIONS REMAINS A MYSTERY TO MARINE RESEARCHERS.
