CITY MANAGER JANE CHAMBERS TO RESIGN (GOV) JB 2/6/15

UKIAH CITY MANAGER JANE CHAMBERS HAS ANNOUNCED HER PLAN TO RESIGN FROM HER POSITION WITH THE CITY.

THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL RECEIVED A LETTER FROM CHAMBERS THIS WEEK THAT LAID OUT HER PLAN TO RESIGN ON JUNE 26 OF THIS YEAR. CHAMBERS HUSBAND RECENTLY BEGAN WORKING IN SAN FRANCISCO AND SHE SAID THAT SHE PLANS TO MOVE BACK TO THE BAY AREA. SHE WILL REMAIN IN HER POSITION UNTIL THE FORMATION OF THE NEXT BUDGET AND PLANS TO FACILITATE THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW CITY MANAGER AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE FOR THE CITY COUNCIL, ORGANIZATION, AND THE RESIDENTS OF UKIAH.

LAURAS LAW PLAN WONT AFFECT OTHER PROGRAMS (GOV) JB 2/6/15

MENDOCINO COUNTY OFFICIALS STATED THAT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LAURAS LAW PROGRAM WONT AFFECT OTHER COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL, THE MENDOCINO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ON TUESDAY STATED THAT NO VOLUNTARY MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS WITHIN THE COUNTY WILL BE REDUCED AS A RESULT OF THE LAURAS LAW PILOT PROGRAM THAT IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED TO KICK OFF JULY 1. LAURAS LAW IS A STATEWIDE MENTAL HEALTH BILL THAT ALLOWS FOR COURT-ORDERED TREATMENT FOR SEVERELY MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE, FOLLOWING AN APPLICATION PROCESS. THE EXPECTED COST FOR THE ONE-YEAR PROGRAM IS $160,000, WITH $100,000 OF THAT COMING FROM THE COUNTYS GENERAL FUND.

THREE MEN ARRESTED FOR TRANSPORTING MARIJUANA (LAW) JB 2/6/15

THREE MEN, INCLUDING ON FROM KELSEYVILLE, WERE ARRESTED IN MENDOCINO COUNTY FOR TRANSPORTING MARIJUANA FOR SALE.

SHORTLY BEFORE 2:30 AM, A MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTY STOPPED A U-HAUL TRUCK ON SOUTH STATE STREET FOR A VEHICLE CODE VIOLATION. WHILE THE U-HAUL WAS BEING STOPPED, A HONDA CRV WITH STOPPED AS WELL AND WAS BELIEVED TO BE A TRAILING VEHICLE. OFFICERS NOTICED THE STRONG ODOR OF MARIJUANA COMING FROM BOTH VEHICLES AND DETAINED ALL THREE MEN AND SEARCHED THE VEHICLES. THE U-HAUL WAS FOUND TO CONTAIN APPROXIMATELY 50 POUNDS OF PROCESSED MARIJUANA, WITH ANOTHER SMALLER AMOUNT FOUND IN THE CRV. FOLLOWING THE SEARCH, 30 YEAR OLD FRANCISCO VILLA AND THE OTHER TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL.

HEALTH INSURER ANTHEM HACKED FOR RECORDS (PI) JB 2/6/15

HEALTH INSURER ANTHEM SAID HACKERS INFILTRATED ITS COMPUTER NETWORK AND GAINED ACCESS TO PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR MILLIONS OF ITS CUSTOMERS.

THE NATIONS SECOND LARGEST HEALTH INSURER SAID IT WAS CONTACTING CUSTOMERS AFFECTED BY WHAT IT CALLS A VERY SOPHISTICATED CYBER ATTACK THAT THE COMPANY DISCOVERED LAST WEEK. IT SAID ATTACKERS GAINED ACCESS TO NAMES, BIRTHDATES, EMAIL ADDRESSES, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS AND OTHER DETAILS OF TENS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE CURRENTLY COVERED OR WHO HAVE HAD COVERAGE IN THE PAST. THE FBI URGED ANTHEM CUSTOMERS CONTACTED BY THE INSURER TO REPORT ANY SUSPECTED INSTANCES OF IDENTITY THEFT.

SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE FOUND IN LAKE COUNTY MAILBOX (LAW) JB 2/6/15

A HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE RESIDENTS DISCOVERY OF AN UNUSUAL ITEM IN THE MAIL LED TO A HAZMAT RESPONSE ON WEDNESDAY.

THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTED THAT SOUTH LAKE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION AND CAL FIRE PERSONNEL WERE DISPATCHED TO A POSSIBLE HAZMAT SITUATION ON HARTMANN ROAD WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. A LOCAL RESIDENT HAD OPENED SOME MAIL AND FOUND AN UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE WRAPPED IN PLASTIC. THE AREA WAS ISOLATED AS THE HAZMAT TEAM WORKED TO IDENTIFY THE SUBSTANCE FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS BEFORE IT WAS DETERMINED TO NOT BE HAZARDOUS. THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE IS CONTINUING ITS OWN INVESTIGATION INTO THE SUBSTANCE AND ITS PRESENCE IN THE MAIL.

MIDDLETOWN CRASH INJURES TWO PEOPLE (LAW) JB 2/6/15

TWO PEOPLE WERE FLOWN TO REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTERS FOLLOWING A VEHICLE CRASH IN MIDDLETOWN WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

THE SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON HIGHWAY 29 AT SPRUCE GROVE ROAD SOUTH AROUND 5 PM WEDNESDAY WHEN AN SUV WENT OFF THE ROAD, ROLLING SEVERAL TIMES. THE ADULT MALE AND FEMALE OCCUPANTS OF THE SUV BOTH SUSTAINED INJURIES IN THE CRASH AND WERE TRANSPORTED BY BOTH GROUND AND AIR AMBULANCES TO AREA TRAUMA CENTERS. THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME AND IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY AUTHORITIES.

CLEARLAKE MEN ARRESTED FOR DRUGS, GUN IN NAPA (LAW) JB 2/6/15

A TRAFFIC STOP IN NAPA LEADS TO THE ARREST OF TWO CLEARLAKE MEN ON DRUG AND WEAPONS CHARGES.

A NAPA COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTY CONDUCTED A TRAFFIC STOP OF A VEHICLE ON PETRIFIED FOREST ROAD NEAR CALISTOGA ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON. THE DEPUTY COULD SMELL THE ODOR OF BURNT MARIJUANA AS HE APPROACHED THE VEHICLE AND HE DEPLOYED HIS DRUG DETECTION K9 TO PERFORM AN EXTERIOR SEARCH OF THE CAR. AFTER THE K9 ALERTED TO A PRESENCE IN THE TRUNK, A SEARCH OF THE CAR TURNED UP 15 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA, AS WELL A LOADED .22 REVOLVER AND OVER $2,400 IN CASH. 20-YEAR-OLD ANTHONY SANDOVAL AND 24 YEAR OLD DVELLE WILLIAMS OF CLEARLAKE WERE BOTH ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES FOLLOWING THE SEARCH.

STAPLES BUYS OFFICE DEPOT FOR $6 BILLION (ECN) JB 2/6/15

EVOLVING SHOPPING HABITS HAVE FORCED YET ANOTHER RETAILER TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

STAPLES, THE NATIONS LARGEST BIG-BOX OFFICE SUPPLY CHAIN, ANNOUNCED WEDNESDAY THAT IT IS PURCHASING ITS SECOND-RANKED RIVAL OFFICE DEPOT FOR $6 BILLION. THE DEAL, WHICH COMES A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER OFFICE DEPOT ACQUIRED OFFICE MAX FOR $1.2 BILLION, STILL NEEDS APPROVAL FROM THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION. THE COMBINED COMPANY, WHICH WILL HAVE 4,000 STORES, MEANS THE TWO RETAILERS WILL NO LONGER COMPETE FOR THE SAME CUSTOMERS AND WILL ALLOW STAPLES TO MORE EFFECTIVELY COMPETE IN A RAPIDLY EVOLVING COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT.
