HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LAKE COUNTY GETS GRANTS (ECN) JB 3/10/15

TWO NEW STATE GRANTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED BY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LAKE COUNTY.

ACCORDING TO THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LAKE COUNTY HAS RECEIVED TWO STATE GRANTS TOTALING $840,000 TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND ITS SERVICES, BOTH FOR FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS AND FOR THOSE WHO NEED CRITICAL HOME REPAIRS. THE GRANTS ARE THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTS CALHOME PROGRAM. THE FIRST GRANT OF $540,000 PROVIDES MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE FOR FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS WITHIN THE CITY OF CLEARLAKE. THE SECOND GRANT OF $300,000 OFFERS MORTGAGE AND REHABILITATION ASSISTANCE TO OWNERS OF MANUFACTURED HOMES THROUGHOUT LAKE COUNTY.

STRONG ARM ROBBERY IN UKIAH (LAW) JB 3/10/15

AN ATTACK ON FORD ROAD IN UKIAH LEADS TO THE ARREST OF A MAN ON CHARGES OF STRONG ARM ROBBERY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE REPORTS, AN ADULT MALE VICTIM WHO WAS SITTING ON THE SIDEWALK ON FORD ROAD WAS SUDDENLY ATTACKED BY 43-YEAR-OLD PATRICK TAYLOR. AFTER PUNCHING THE VICTIM IN THE HEAD SEVERAL TIMES, TAYLOR MADE OFF WITH THE VICTIMS BACKPACK AND OTHER PERSONAL PROPERTY. RESPONDING DEPUTIES COULD NOT LOCATE TAYLOR THAT EVENING BUT WERE CALLED AGAIN TO AN AREA ON BRUSH STREET THE FOLLOWING DAY TO BREAK UP ANOTHER FIGHT BETWEEN THE TAYLOR AND THE VICTIM. THE VICTIMS BACKPACK WAS RECOVERED AND TAYLOR WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL WITH BAIL SET AT $150,000.

NHUDG PUSHES FOR CREEK CLEANUPS IN FT BRAGG (EVR) JB 3/10/15

THE NOYO HEADLANDS UNIFIED DESIGN GROUP IS SPEARHEADING EFFORTS TO RESTORE TWO CREEKS IN FORT BRAGG.

IN AN EFFORT TO DAYLIGHT, OR RETURN TO A NATURAL STATE, WATERWAYS IN THE FORT BRAGG AREA, THE NHUDG HAS FOCUSED ITS ATTENTION TO MAPLE AND ALDER CREEKS AS THEY CROSS THE GEORGIA PACIFIC MILL SITE. BOTH OF THESE YEAR-ROUND CREEKS HISTORICALLY FLOWED FROM THE NORTHEAST AND SOUTHEAST TOWARD WHAT IS NOW THE CENTER OF FORT BRAGG AND THE CENTER OF THE MILL SITE. THE NHUDG AND WYNN COASTAL PLANNING HAVE RECENTLY COMPLETED A ROAD MAP OF THE WATERWAYS WHICH HAS AS ITS GOAL THE MOUNTING OF AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY OF DAYLIGHTING ON THE MILL-SITE PROPERTY.

BOXER INTRODUCES IRAN OVERSIGHT ACT (GOV) JB 3/10/15

SENATOR BARBARA BOXER HAS INTRODUCED NEW LEGISLATION TO MONITOR NUCLEAR COMPLIANCE BY IRAN.

SENATOR BOXER, A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE, HAS INTRODUCED THE IRAN CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT ACT OF 2015 TO OVERSEE ANY NUCLEAR DEAL WITH IRAN. THE BILL WOULD REQUIRE THE ADMINISTRATION TO REGULARLY REPORT TO CONGRESS ON IRANIAN COMPLIANCE WITH ANY DEAL, AND SETS UP AN EXPEDITED PROCESS FOR CONGRESS TO REINSTATE SANCTIONS AND IMPOSE OTHER PENALTIES IF IRAN VIOLATES THE TERMS OF THE DEAL. THE OVERSIGHT ACT WOULD REQUIRE THE PRESIDENT TO SUBMIT A REPORT TO CONGRESS AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 90 DAYS TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE JOINT PLAN OF ACTION, OR ANY SUCCESSOR DEAL.

6 YEAR OLD GIRL HIT IN SANTA ROSA CROSSWALK (LAW) JB 3/10/15

A 6 YEAR OLD GIRL IS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN A CROSSWALK IN SANTA ROSA.

ACCORDING TO POLICE REPORTS, THE GIRL AND HER MOTHER WERE CROSSING PETALUMA HILL ROAD SUNDAY EVENING WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. A FORD FOCUS DRIVEN BY A 67 YEAR OLD SANTA ROSA RESIDENT FAILED TO STOP FOR THE PAIR AND STRUCK THE LITTLE GIRL, KNOCKING HER SEVERAL FEET INTO THE NORTHBOUND LANE. THE GIRL WAS TAKEN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL THEN FLOWN TO CHILDRENS HOSPITAL IN OAKLAND. THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT, INCLUDING THE SPEED OF THE C AR AND WHETHER THE CROSSWALK ALERT LIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED, IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION BY AUTHORITIES.

LYTTON POMOS SET TO SIGN LAND DEAL WITH COUNTY (ECN) JB 3/10/15

SONOMA COUNTY IS SET TO REACH A LAND SETTLEMENT DEAL WITH THE LYTTON BAND OF POMO INDIANS.

ACCORDING TO THE PRESS DEMOCRAT, SONOMA COUNTY SUPERVISORS ARE POISED TUESDAY TO SIGN AN AGREEMENT WITH THE LYTTON BAND OF POMO INDIANS THAT SUPPORTS THEIR PLANNED TRIBAL HOUSING AND COMMUNITY CENTER ON WINDSORS WESTERN BOUNDARY, AND THE EXPANSION OF THEIR PROPOSED TRIBAL LANDS TO INCLUDE A FUTURE RESORT AND WINERY. THE DEAL WOULD PROHIBIT A CASINO AND ALSO ENSURE THE TRIBE DEVELOPS MOST OF ITS PROPERTY ACCORDING TO THE COUNTY AND WINDSOR GENERAL PLANS OTHER THAN A WINERY OF UP TO 200,000 CASES AND A 200-ROOM RESORT. COUNTY AND WINDSOR OFFICIALS ON MONDAY SAID THE AGREEMENT WILL PROVIDE A MEASURE OF CERTAINTY AND CONTROL OVER WHAT THE LYTTON BAND CAN DO WITH ITS PROPERTY, EVEN AFTER IT IS TAKEN INTO FEDERAL TRUST AND NO LONGER SUBJECT TO LOCAL AND STATE LAND-USE REGULATIONS.

BOXER INTRODUCES BILL TO EXPAND JOHN MUIR SITE (EVR) JB 3/10/15

A NEW BILL TO EXPAND THE JOHN MUIR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE HAS BEEN INTRODUCED BY SENATOR BARBARA BOXER.

U.S. SENATOR BARBARA BOXER AND CONGRESSMAN MARK DESAULNIER INTRODUCED LEGISLATION TO EXPAND THE HISTORIC SITE IN MARTINEZ THAT CELEBRATES THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF JOHN MUIR. THE JOHN MUIR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE EXPANSION ACT WOULD AUTHORIZE THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE TO ACQUIRE LAND THAT IS BEING DONATED THROUGH A TRUST, WHICH WOULD IMPROVE ACCESS TO THE PARK AND PROVIDE MORE FOR VISITORS TO SEE AND DO AT THE SITE. ALTHOUGH THE LAND IS BEING DONATED BY THE MUIR HERITAGE LAND TRUST, CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL OF THE ACQUISITION IS NECESSARY BECAUSE THE ACREAGE EXCEEDS THE PERCENTAGE OF LAND THE PARK SERVICE IS ALLOWED TO ACQUIRE ADMINISTRATIVELY.
