MORE COMPUTER ACCESS NEEDED IN MENDOCINO COUNTY (BB) JB 4/1/15

A NEW REPORT FROM THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTY SHOWS A LACK OF COMPUTER ACCESS AND INTERNET EDUCATION IN THE COUNTY.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL, THE REPORT SHOWS THAT MENDOCINO COUNTY CONTINUES TO LACK PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE INTERNET, ALONG WITH COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR AREA RESIDENTS, WHICH ARE SAID TO BE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO LOW BROADBAND ADOPTION RATES IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THOSE CONCLUSIONS AND MORE WERE OUTLINED IN THE BROADBAND ALLIANCE OF MENDOCINO COUNTYS FIRST-EVER REPORT TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF COMPUTERS, WIRELESS INTERNET AND LITERACY CLASSES AVAILABLE IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTY. THE LACK OF AFFORDABLE SERVICE WAS ALSO INFLUENTIAL, ACCORDING TO THE REPORT. A PHONE SURVEY TO LARGE CITY AND TOWN INSTITUTIONS, AND REQUESTS TO NONPROFITS IN THE AREA WERE USED TO MAKE THE DETERMINATIONS. THE REPORT ALSO STATED THAT AT LEAST 19 ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY HAVE A DEMONSTRATED NEED FOR NEW COMPUTERS IN ORDER TO BETTER PROVIDE PEOPLE WITH THE ACCESS THEY ARE SEEKING. HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE GROUPS ARE LACKING THE FUNDING.
