MENDOCINO COUNTY WITHDRAWS USDA CONTRACT (GOV/EVR) JB 4/14/15

MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS DECIDED TO WITHDRAW A USDA CONTRACT ALLOWING THE KILLING OF PREDATORY ANIMALS.

THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL REPORTED THAT, ACCORDING TO A SETTLEMENT BETWEEN THE COUNTY AND THE ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND, MENDOCINO COUNTY HAS AGREED TO SUSPEND CONTRACT ANIMAL KILLING WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURES WILDLIFE SERVICES AND WILL NOT RENEW ITS WORK AND FINANCIAL PLAN WITH THE GROUP. THE $142,000 COUNTY CONTRACT WITH WILDLIFE SERVICES ALLOWED THE KILLING OF PREDATORY ANIMALS LIKE COYOTES, BEARS, BOBCATS AND FOXES SINCE DEC. 2004. THE DECISION IS PENDING AN ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW THAT WILL INCLUDE THE EVALUATION OF OTHER NONLETHAL PREDATOR CONTROL OPTIONS, BUT CANT INVOLVE USDA WILDLIFE SERVICES.

UKIAH SURGEON PLEAS NO CONTEST IN DRUG CASE (LAW) JB 4/14/15

A FORMER UKIAH ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON ENTERED NO CONTEST PLEAS TO FELONY CHARGES OF UNLAWFULLY PRESCRIBING NARCOTICS.

49-YEAR-OLD BRIAN CABLE AT THE LAST MINUTE ON MONDAY AVOIDED TRIAL BY ENTERING NO CONTEST PLEAS IN MENDOCINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT TO SIX FELONY CHARGES OF UNLAWFULLY PRESCRIBING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. THE INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION OF CABLE HAS BEEN FOR PRESCRIPTION FRAUD INVOLVING HYDROCODONE, A NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATION. HE ENTERED NO CONTEST PLEAS TO WRITING OUT PRESCRIPTIONS TO PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT UNDER HIS CARE, AND SECURING THE DRUG FOR HIS OWN USE. CABLE FACES SENTENCING OF UP TO SIX YEARS AND FOUR MONTHS IN PRISON. ALTERNATIVELY, THE COURT MAY ORDER CABLE TO SERVE UP TO FIVE YEARS ON SUPERVISED PROBATION, WITH A JAIL SENTENCE OF UP TO 365 DAYS AS A TERM OF PROBATION.

MCSO IDENTIFIES TWO MEN WHO DIED ABALONE DIVING (LAW) JB 4/14/15

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS IDENTIFIED TWO OF THE THREE MEN WHO DIED WHILE ABALONE DIVING OVER THE WEEKEND.

ACCORDING TO AN MCSO REPORT, THE TWO DIVERS ARE IDENTIFIED AS 49-YEAR-OLD TAE WON OH OF DUBLIN AND 49-YEAR-OLD HYUK KOOK SHIN OF SUWANEE, GEORGIA. SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARRIVED AND LEARNED THAT A GROUP OF FIVE ADULT MALES FROM OUT OF THE AREA WERE ABALONE DIVING IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF CASPAR ANCHORAGE BAY. AFTER ENTERING THE WATER, THREE OF THE MEN BECAME TRAPPED IN THE SURF OF A NARROW CHANNEL BETWEEN TWO ROCK OUTCROPPINGS WHERE THE DIVERS HAD ENTERED THE OCEAN WATER. DURING THE RESCUE, TWO MEN WERE RECOVERED FROM THE WATER BY BOAT AND HELICOPTER THEN BROUGHT TO THE SHORE OF CASPAR BEACH. LIVE-SAVING MEASURES WERE INITIATED, BUT UNSUCCESSFUL, AND BOTH WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. AT APPROXIMATELY 7:00 P.M., THE MISSING THIRD DIVER WAS LOCATED DECEASED IN A SMALL COVE IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA. THE IDENTITY OF THE THIRD MAN HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED PENDING NOTIFICATION OF HIS FAMILY.

A SPECIAL FUNDRAISER HAS BEEN PLANNED AT THE RACING SEASON OPENER AT UKIAH SPEEDWAY FOR INJURED UKIAH TEEN, BRANDY PETERSON.

UKIAH TEENAGER BRANDY PETERSON SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES LAST WEEK AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A CAR IN A CROSSWALK. PETERSON IS CURRENTLY IN SANTA ROSA RECOVERING FROM HER INJURIES AND HER PARENTS HAVE TAKEN TIME AWAY FROM WORK TO CARE FOR HER. IN AN EFFORT TO OFFSET HER SUBSTANTIAL MEDICAL BILLS, RACE FANS CAN DONATE ANY AMOUNT TO THE BRANDY PETERSON FUND AT THE SOUVENIR BOOTH AND BE ENTERED INTO A DRAWING TO WIN A SEASON PASS FOR UKIAH SPEEDWAY. PLEASE HELP THE UKIAH SPEEDWAY SUPPORT A LOCAL FAMILY IN NEED.

CAL WATER SUPPLIER PLANS TO REDUCE DELIVERIES (EVR) JB 4/14/15

IN THE WAKE OF THE CURRENT DROUGHT, A MAJOR CALIFORNIA WATER SUPPLIER IS PLANNING TO REDUCE ITS DELIVERIES.

ONE OF CALIFORNIA’S LARGEST WATER WHOLESALERS MOVED FORWARD MONDAY ON A PLAN TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER IT DELIVERS TO MORE THAN TWO DOZEN CITIES AND AGENCIES SERVING 19 MILLION PEOPLE AMID THE LENGTHENING DROUGHT. IF APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF THE METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ON TUESDAY, REGIONAL WATER DELIVERIES WOULD BE CUT BY 15 PERCENT BEGINNING IN JULY. THE DISTRICT SERVES PARTS OF LOS ANGELES, ORANGE, SAN DIEGO, RIVERSIDE, SAN BERNARDINO AND VENTURA COUNTIES. THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD RELEASED DRAFT REDUCTION TARGETS FOR MORE THAN 400 WATER AGENCIES THAT MUST CUT THEIR WATER USE BY ANYWHERE FROM 10 PERCENT TO 35 PERCENT. THE TARGETS ARE BASED ON PER-CAPITA WATER USE.

DOLLAR GENERAL WANTS MORE LAKE COUNTY STORES (ECN) JB 4/14/15

WITH TWO STORES NOW OPEN ON THE NORTHSHORE, RETAILER DOLLAR GENERAL IS LOOKING TO BUILD TWO MORE STORES IN LAKE COUNTY.

ACCORDING TO THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS, THE GOODLETTSVILLE, TENNESSEE.-BASED CORPORATION OPENED ITS CLEARLAKE OAKS STORE ON SATURDAY AND ITS FIRST STORE IN NICE, OPENED JANUARY 31 OF THIS YEAR. CROSS DEVELOPMENT OF PLANO, TEXAS ACTING ON BEHALF OF DOLLAR GENERAL HAS SUBMITTED APPLICATIONS FOR USE PERMITS AND INITIAL STUDIES FOR NEW STORES LOCATIONS IN KELSEYVILLE AND MIDDLETOWN. THE APPLICATIONS SAY THAT BOTH STORES ARE PROPOSED TO BE 9,100 SQUARE FEET IN SIZE, THE SAME SIZE AS THE CLEARLAKE OAKS AND NICE STORES.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TRAINING PLANNED FOR UKIAH (PI) JB 4/14/15

WALK & BIKE MENDOCINO IS SET TO HOST A PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM IN UKIAH NEXT MONTH.

ACCORDING TO WALK & BIKE MENDOCINO PROGRAM DIRECTOR NEIL DAVIS, MORE THAN 14,000 PEDESTRIANS ARE KILLED OR INJURED IN CALIFORNIA EVERY YEAR SOME 6,100 OF THEM WHILE CROSSING IN A MARKED CROSSWALK AND THEY ARE DISPROPORTIONATELY OLDER PEOPLE AND CHILDREN. THE TRAINING IS PART OF THE COMMUNITY PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TRAINING PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE CALIFORNIA OFFICE OF TRAFFIC SAFETY THROUGH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION. CITIES ARE SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF THEIR INCIDENTS OF SERIOUS PEDESTRIAN INJURIES AND FATALITIES, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY INTEREST IN SUSTAINING SAFETY ACTIVITIES. UKIAH WILL BE THE LATEST COMMUNITY IN THE STATE TO RECEIVE A FREE, HALF-DAY PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM, CONDUCTED BY THE UC BERKELEY SAFE TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER, SCHEDULED FOR MAY 5 AT 3 PM AT THE UKIAH CONFERENCE CENTER.
