A man from Napa’s been arrested in connection to the attempted murder of a woman in Dos Rios. Police say Arlon Strauss was arrested after a phone for medical help for a woman who fell and hurt her head. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Dept reports chasing a car in Willits that was driving too fast and wouldn’t stop. They ended up at the old Howard Hospital. Apparently the driver was going for help for the fall victim. When deputies noticed how serious the victim’s injuries were they escorted the driver to the ER. They found the victim had actually been assaulted and had life threatening injuries. The woman was moved to another hospital and Strauss arrested. His bail was set at $400,000.

The Lake County Valley Fire Recovery Task Force is having public meetings at the Twin Pine Casino every Tuesday. Beginning tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM the Task Force, which is a partnership of local, state, federal, and tribal representatives are providing services for Valley Fire survivors and Lake County residents. The group took over after the deactivation of the Lake County Emergency Operation Center. The meetings for residents to find out about rebuilding and repair progress after the fire. A shooting victim in Clearlake Oaks had to be flown to an out of county hospital. The shooting Saturday night reported before 7 in the 13000 block of Third Street. Lake Co News reports Northshore Fire, Cal Fire and sheriff’s deputies went to the report of a gunshot victim. They found the victim, wounded in the neck inside a car. The victim taken by REACH air ambulance as police continued searching for the shooter. Reports say the shooter was seen in a gorilla mask, black shirt and black pants.

A man from Susanville has been arrested for DUI after crashing into a fence in his pickup and knocking down power utility equipment in front of Lucerne Elementary School. Police say
Holdyn Guthrie was driving a 2000 Dodge Ram pickup and lost control, veering off the side of the road, hitting a utility pole and transformer box. The truck kept moving though, hitting the school’s chain-link fence and a second utility transformer box. There were live power lines down on Country Club Drive and the school’s chain-link fence. The man has minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. They say alcohol was probably the reason for the crash. The man arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence and was being held on $5,000 bail.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Dept. finds a man in Lakeport after being reported for noncompliance with sex offender registration requirements. Police have arrested Daniel Weippert after a statement was released to residents to help find the guy. Weippert is registered on the Megan’s law website with a residence in Kelseyville, but was seen in Lakeport.

The Safeway Foundation has donated 100-grand to the victims of the Valley Fire. The store managers from Napa, Lakeport and St. Helena presented the $100,000 check to Jeff Baumgartner, the executive director of the California Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross. The stores in the area were raising money for victims at cash registers then matched customer giving.

A man from Ukiah’s body’s been found after a fire destroyed a family home. The Ukiah Valley Fire Authority reports the fire happened so fast and had explosive growth. They say before they got there the fire spread from the motorhome where it started to the family home. They say it was “blowing out the front door and through one of the windows” Friday night. It was hard for firefighters because of a lack of water and strong winds. The nearest fire hydrant was a half mile away. The fire’s believed to be accidental. The man has not been identified yet.

The Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency so the state can deal with the severe bark beetle infestation killing millions of trees. The governor sent a letter to the USDA secretary last week asking for help from the fed for what he called the worst epidemic of tree mortality in modern history. The tree’s dying not helped by the four year drought. The United States Forest Service says there’s more than 22 million trees that are already dead. The gov. asking the fed for money and help for private landowners to remove dead and dying trees.

State officials have started fining water suppliers in the state who are not meeting the mandatory 25 percent reduction in water usage. $61,000 in fines for Beverly Hills, Indio, Redlands and the Coachella Valley Water District. A spokesperson in Redlands says the city found out about the fine Thursday and says they’re deciding how to respond. Those in Beverly Hills, Indio and the Coachella Valley Water District have not commented. Californians have cut back water use by more than 25 percent since Gov. Jerry Brown put the mandate into effect last June.

A final decision forthcoming from the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors on the proposed Dollar General store in Redwood Valley. Some local businesses had objected due to because the city issued a building permit, then backed down, so they’re concerned about the message it sends. The Board of Supervisors voted to repeal the building permit last month and was expected for a final decision a couple weeks ago. The appeal to the original permit by the owners of the Redwood Valley Market, saying they were worried about losing business if a Dollar store came to town. The developer and property owner looking to build says they’ll sue if the county reverses its decision.

An elderly woman finally gets her diploma from a high school in Michigan. 97-year-old Margaret Thome Bekema got her honorary diploma, a lifelong goal after having to drop out to help her family. School administrators from Catholic Central High in Grand Rapids gave Bekema her diploma at the Yorkshire and Stonebridge Manor senior community in Walker. She would have graduated in 1936, but dropped out to help care for her three younger siblings because her mother had cancer.

Some drivers and pedestrians in Phoenix a little freaked out by a giant, inflatable pumpkin as it got loose after it got a tad too windy. The 25-foot-tall pumpkin cut loose from its display promoting a big party. It went flying down the street and damaged two street lights. Its owner, the party promoter, says it took him over a half hour to find the massive squash.
