A man from Ukiah’s been arrested after police say he stole a grocery cart full of items at Safeway. Police say Marlin Peterson, who was wanted on two felony warrants, was seen wandering around the store in Rohnert Park for four hours with a cart full of merchandise. They say he tried unsuccessfully to leave without paying several times, but employees stopped him each time. Police found he had two felony, no-bail warrants for his arrest out of Mendocino County. When they tried to arrest him he ran out but he was taken down soon after. Police say he had methamphetamine on him so he was arrested for resisting a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance and for the active warrants.

New garbage cans have been out all across campus at Ukiah High to help keep the cockroach problem down. The cans have a sticker on the lid that says, “Don’t feed the cockroaches”. A maintenance crew member was on top of the trash. Plus the school district said maintenance crews were spending about "16 hours/week sealing cracks and crevices, mostly at the high school stadium. The school district’s director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation says they’re also adding more than 100 door sweeps in to keep the pests out.

Nearly 700 pot plants found during several searches last week or so in Clearlake. Last Thursday officers went to a home and find 48 large plants and 21 pounds of processed marijuana. 19 year old Yessica Contreras was arrested, then released for medical reasons. They say she’s about six months pregnant. A week before police found 567 plants and a handgun at two properties. Then they arrested Liliana Guadarrama and Miguel Mendoza-Balderrama. Plants and water diversion and electric from a nearby home found there too.

An approval for Hope City to take down the Middletown Central Park Community Center and put up a dormitory for volunteers to live in while they build houses in the Valley Fire area. A major use permit passed unanimously by the planning commission at its regular meeting on Aug. 25th. Now that the seven-day appeal period has passed, they await the building permit, which could take up to three weeks. The new building is going to be made into a community center again after the 6,000 square foot housing project is no longer needed. At first there will be as many as 40 volunteers visiting a week at a time.

A man in Lakeport’s been to court and waived his right to a preliminary examination. Nine Green’s facing charges of Threats to Commit Crime which will Result in Death or Great Bodily Injury, Threats to any Elected Public Official, Willful and Malicious Harassment to Another Person and more than 30 counts of Violation of Protective Order. Green’s bail went from $20,000 to $75,000. But then the judge lowered it to $25,000, also saying if there were any problems with Green before his trial, it will go up again. He’s due back in court Sept. 16th.

A man seen hanging on to a bucket in the Russian River near Healdsburg Memorial Beach has died. After the man was reached and brought to shore, he was pronounced dead. Passing kayakers and a sheriff’s helicopter spotted the man in the water near Badger Park, upstream from Memorial Beach. The kayakers who saw the man’s body started to bring him to shore, then the chopper came down and helped. His name’s not been released, but police say he appeared to be in his 50s.

The Lakeport City Council is considering pulling weeds in several lots in the city. The Community Development Director is bringing a proposed resolution to declare dry weeds, brush and similar vegetation creating a possible fire hazard, as a public nuisance. They will ask staff to use administrative citation procedures to start the abatement process. There are 75 properties attached to the issue. Notices will go out to property owners to abate the weeds or get a citation for a $100 fine.

The Lake County Long-Term Recovery Task Force is meeting regarding the Clayton Fire. The meeting tomorrow night at 6 at the Lower Lake Museum, Second floor Auditorium. The co-coordinators for the recovery effort, Lake County 5th District Supervisor Rob Brown and County Administrative Officer Carol Huchingson are encouraging fire survivors to go to the meetings so they can hear recovery updates first-hand.

A giant marijuana grow’s been found in Hopland. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office says they got a call to the garden in the exterior boundaries of the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians Rancheria. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office found the Federal Government was not asserting jurisdiction so deputies went to the home and found 847 marijuana plants which they took out. Two people were arrested, Zachary Diamond on charges of cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Kyle Murphy was arrested on charges of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale. Bail for both suspects was set at $50,000.

An opera singer sings a little too loud and gets arrested. Alexandria police report, opera singer Krista Clouse was using a speaker to make her voice louder on a sidewalk near Old Town, where they say she was arrested for violating the city’s noise ordinance. She says she was expressing her First Amendment rights and sings and gets tips to support her family.

A police station in Pennsylvania is opened again after a swarm of bees took over, forcing officers to take cover. The Carbondale police station was emptied of officers after the bees invaded City Hall last Tuesday. Many went inside cracks and crevices and several inside the first-floor police station. A beekeeper had to come out and take out hundreds of insects from their hive outside the building’s third floor.
