The Lake County Sheriffs Narcotics Unit found and destroyed almost 8,000 marijuana plants at one illegal grow side in Buttes Canyon, and another seven thousand plants at a second, nearby site. The field were spotted during a routine recon flight over the rural mountains of Butts Canyon. Both of those operations were watered by complex drip irrigation systems diverting water from nearby springs. The Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit will continue to seize drugs mean for drug trafficking whenever possible.

The Mendocino National Forest will seek input on developing the Black Butte River and Cold Creek Comprehensive river management plan. The focus will be on protecting the rivers water quality as well as its free flow. Input on that plan can be sent to the Mendocino National Forest Upper Lake Ranger District

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the Lake Family resource center has events planned all month long to highlight domestic violence awareness, even encouraging people to dye their help purple to raise awareness.

Repairs on the Perkins street overpass across Highway 101 will start this afternoon. The overpass was damaged two weeks ago when an excavator being hauled by a construction company hit the underside of the bridge. That Company, Ukiah Based A to Z Construction will be footing the more than $ 1 million price tag for emergency repairs. The heavy equipment hit four of the six concrete support beams, causing some loose concrete. Crews will be removing an loose concrete and pouring more concrete to replace it. While crews are working southbound traffic on highway 101 will be restricted to 1 lane and some slowdowns should be expected. Work should finish up on Monday.

Students of Mendocino College’s sustainable technology program got the opportunity last week to install solar panels onto a home in collaboration with GRID Alternatives. The company installs solar panel systems on the homes of income eligible families living in affordable housing zones. Mendocino county is one of the latest territories for GRID Alternatives and they were happy to help the students get some hands on experience.

Firefighters continue to make significant progress on the Sawmill fire in Sonoma County. The 1,600 acre fire is now 90 percent contained according to Cal Fire. The sawmill fire started on Sunday morning and forced hundreds to evacuate their homes.

A new law will allow federally funded rural clinics in the state to provide family and marriage counseling to poor residents. Two clinics in Mendocino County, the Long Valley Health Center, in Laytonville and Ukiah Valley Rural Health Center in Ukiah fall under that umbrella. Those in favor of the law say it’s critical that under-served populations in rural areas have access to mental health services.
