When deputies and a SWAT team arrived they found no one there, and no evidence of a gunshot victim, though thee was evidence of firearm use and neighbors reported hearing gunshots after a verbal dispute. After a ground and air search deputies eventually gave up searching after another anonymous caller told dispatch that no one was shot, no one was injured, and the suspects had fled.

Both the home owner and kelso police officers attempted to rescue a man trapped inside, but were hindered by thick smoke and flames. Cowlitz 2 fire officials are hoping that the story may make someone think twice about lazy or unsafe smoking habits. Cigarettes are responsible for over 20% of all fire deaths.
