Water and sewer rates will likely be going up in Willits. The Willits News reports that following a legally mandated 45-day public review, the City Council plans to raise water and sewer rates over the summer to help pay for maintenance projects and operating costs over the next five years. The City last raised the water rates in 2010 and the wastewater rates in 2013 but say they now need collect more to pay for some capital improvements to maintain the systems without which they say the city could be vulnerable to system failures. Current the plan calls for raising the water revenues by 2.5 percent each fiscal year through 2022 and the wastewater revenue to start with a 7 percent hike next year gradually decreasing to 4.5 percent by 2022.

The Mendocino College Board of Trustees has approved the naming of “Pomo Plaza” to recognize the Pomo communities and help create a more culturally respectful and inclusive campus climate as part of their continued work to strengthen the College’s inclusive, equitable, and ethnically diverse culture to be more welcoming to all students. Pomo Plaza will be on the Mendocino College, Ukiah Campus between the Library Learning Center and the Lowery Student Center. It will be marked with a stone monument acknowledging the experiences and contributions of Native American people and importance of the Pomo cultures. The College will hold an unveiling ceremony when the monument’s done.
