The Mendocino DA has released the 2nd Quarter stats on prosecutions related to Illegal marijuana use. Nineteen people were charged in Mendocino County with an illegal marijuana-related primary offense from April-June and the DA says all 19 were convicted. Four were felonies, with two of them also committing violent felonies being sent to state prison and the other two getting their charges reduced to misdemeanors with a few months in the county jail. The other 15 had misdemeanors: ten of them got probation and some got community service with the DA saying in all 1,750 hours of community service were collectively ordered for the pot crimes.

Lake County’s first case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in a dead bird. The Lake County Vector Control District reported Saturday a black-headed grosbeak found June 23rd in Clearlake has tested positive for West Nile Virus. Lake County’s Health Officer, Dr. Karen Tait, says the risk of serious illness for most people is small but for those over 50, or with diabetes or hypertension, there is a risk for serious complications. She says the best protection is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitos’ altogether, which most often happens at dawn and dusk. She suggests using an insect repellent that contains Picaridin, DEET, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or PMD, and consider wearing long sleeved shirts and pants.
